"A moderate deluxe hotel, the Sofitel Tokyo is one of the most distinctive and luxurious in Japan. The hotel has seven banquet rooms, capable of accommodating up to 200 people. The hotel also offers a tea lounge, a bar and three restaurants, serving Teppauyaki Grill Japanese and international cuisine. It is close to such sightseeing spots as Veno Park. "

This design is ugly. It is crazy to have trapiezums on top of each other. Also It looks as if it could over anytime

This is one strange tower. The Simcity version of it was one thing, but seeing this in a real city rather than on a computer game is....different. I'll give it kudos to the architect for being bold and coming up with a unique design though. Of course, a lot of buildings in Japan are uncomparable to those of most cities.

Very interesting. I wouldnt like to have many of them in a city. But alone its uniqueness adds to variation.

Its all white and doesnt directly "irritate" the eye.

To conclude, i think that the design works. Certainly not a "wow-factor", but its interesting. Il give it 6/10. Which means its OK to good.

NOTE: I have just received news that the Sofitel Hotel Tokyo is dying. Why is it being demolished before its time? It was only built in 1994. What will replace it?

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum so be kind.

The Sofitel Hotel near Ueno Park in Tokyo was taken down. From my understanding, Mitsui Fudosan (a large real estate corporation in Japan) purchased the land and is planning to build a condominium building on it. When you look at the empty lot, it's amazing how small the land the Sofitel Hotel was. Given that, I have to say that the design deserves a lot more credit than it appears. It's functional and funky. I kind of miss seeing it in the skyline, know what I mean?

For those that may want to see it in the future, keep your fingers crossed. My sources also mentioned that it was taken apart (yes, dismantled, not torn down; how many skyscrapers can that be done that) and may be used somewhere else in the future. But I still wonder how it was dismantled as it was there one day and gone the next. That is Japanese construction efficiency.

BTW for those that did not have a chance to enter. The first two floors and the basement, the base, were largest. The second floor had a French restaurant (which I heard moved somewhere nearby but I have yet to find) and the first, the front desk, waiting hall, and bar. The basement had a banquet hall or something like that. Going up to the rooms, the elevator was the trunk of the Christmas tree (if you look at the design, I hope you can understand). When you got out of the elevator, basically, there were two rooms on each floor, each of the rooms were the opposite trapezoids. I did not not have a chance to enter the rooms though. Now that it's gone, I wish I had.

Anyway. RIP Sofitel Hotel, Tokyo....for now. And 10/10 for it uniqueness, functionality, and efficiency of space.

W.
