very nice one good location, retractable roof and pitch. Although having the pitch unprotected during a russian winter because there's a convention in the arena seems a bit ridiculous.

Judging from the grass bank surround (lower right pic), I'd say it was on the site of the current Communist-era Kirov Stadium, which is on the banks of the Neva.

This is the only picture I can find that was taken from outside the ground.

I think the big, grassy banks around the perimeter are the giveaway.

It's definitely the same site - you can see the rowing lake in the bottom right rendering as well as this aerial of the Kirov:

They did the same thing in Leipzig with the old Zentralstadion (which looked very similar), turning an old Eastern Bloc-style bowl site into a modern stadium. If you remember, Leipzig was one of last year's World Cup venues.

NeilF
January 31st, 2007, 04:34 PM
Wonderful from the outside at least. Is it just the render, or are those huge pillars actually going to be set inside the bowl? There seems to be a lot of pillars all around the inside of the stadium. For a new build of this magnitude, that's ridiculous.

What a sick mentality! If german, french or italian build such stadiums it's nice but if it's the Russians you call it squandered money...

i saw that as well, cantilever roofs have been around for a long time now but some of those pillars were massive, i hope to see a better image of the inside of the stadium to clear up the seating layout and supports etc

It will have a retractable roof - 200 by 90 meters - and will be held by metal masts.
The stadium will also have a membrane, which, when inflated with hot air, will melt ice and snow.
The field can also be moved outside the stadium, which will help keep the natural turf intact.
The stairs will also be retractable, which will make the stadium more like a constructor set.

The director of the company said that the stadium will be lit up by a million light bulbs,
which will make it "first purple, then red, any color you want".

The stadium will be completed in 2009. The stadium will have the capacity to hold
62167spectators. The construction cost is estimated to be $225 149 000.

A quick question to the St. Petersburgers.

Do they still have thoroughbred horse racing in St. Petersburg? Apparently before 1917, St. Pete's had one of the most beautiful hippodromes in the world in one of the most gorgeous locations imaginable amongst great villas and palaces. I was wondering if the track was still there and if it was still in use today? Apparently it is where the biggest money in horse racing and thus world sports up to World War 1 as horse racing was the biggest pro sport by a large margin at the time. The purses were far greater than the USA, Britain or France had at the time. Of course due to the revolution it all finished.

The location was north across the Neva and beyond Petrowski Park, across the Malaya and Srednyaya rivers.

I know the Moscow one is still there, but was rebuilt after a fire in the 1950s.

I think it doesn't mean much how Zenit is doing at the moment because Russian Premier League started its season just a few weeks ago. They played only 3 games!!

As for Champions league they haven't played in regular stages as far as I know. FYI Zenit's best performance in European club competitions was made when they ended up in semi finals in 0506 UEFA Cup, where they were defeated to Seveilla 1D and 1L(5-2 on aggregates)

Yes, Zenit won Russian Premier League last season. So they've got a ticket going directly to group stages of 32 without going through qualifiers. You could say they saw the best season in league last year.

not close to MD :) I don't think Kurokawa even bothered... that's just how he used to design stadiums and this one will be very original compared to toher sport venues worldwide.
The sole fact that closest comparison you got is a completely different MD proves it ;)

As for capacity, it depends on detailed regulations for each World Cup. It could and should be enough, but FIFA decides here...

I can't wait for this stadium it looks terrific and from watching the UEFA Cup the Zenit fans really impressed me, imagine 60,000 of them that will be one hell of a racket and it could become one of the most intimidating stadia. This stadium really is a sign of a new power in European football I really hope they can get through their Champions League group because if they can do that then anything is possible from there. I tried to look for information on the Zenit page sadly they had nothing in their English section but did have some information in their Russian section sadly I don’t speak Russian so couldn't really give any information on the project for anyone who can the link is below maybe you could translate some of it.

I found this picture of the stadium that I haven't seen before I found it at World Stadiums

I prefer the old roof design to the new one. But more importantly I much prefer the inside to the new design and I liked the old one, this new design has the roof closed tightly over the spectators which should keep noise in better it also looks more intimidating.

Don't know, here's what the website says (using google translate):

The cycle of the project is two years - six months laid on the design and 1.5 years for construction.
In accordance with the time schedule, currently are working on the device pile fields and reinforced concrete slabs rostverka.
Commissioning of the facility and delivery will take place in December 2008.
This means that the first match at the new stadium "Zenith" will be able to spring 2009, even before the opening of the new football season.

but this is a pic of july 2008

http://www.avant-spb.ru/data/fv/images/jul08/IMG_1159.jpg

So I'd guess the 2010 season is more likely :dunno:
Perhaps a russian forumer can tell us

As far as the redesign i dont know, but I'm with you that on some pics it looks different.

Every time I look at the new renders of the stadium I like it even more, but there is one thing that is bugging me there doesn't seem to be to many entrances to the stands it will be a bit of a problem in a stadium that has a capacity of 60,000.
Is there a club that has more potential to challenge the big boys from England, Italy and Spain for the biggest honours of European football.
Its a one team city and the city has a population of roughly 5million and the club is run by a company that has revenue of $75.8billion, so there is money and a strong support base.

Amazing stadium! But IMO is too big to play league matches in Russia.Capacity for international matches is ok but not for club.Durning the Premier Liga matches you haven't a very big attendace.I think 40.000-45.000 will be ok for Zenit. Now your Stadium has 22.000, right?

Typical opinion of person, who know nothing about the club, about players, about coach, about fan-club... Just "2nd Chelsea", because the sponsor is Gazprom?
And why the stadium "is a little too big"? The whole Saint Petersburg (with population 4,6 mln.) support Zenit.

It will be interesting to see if the they will be able to keep the free-wheeling spending up over in Russia now the oil price is in a tail spin.

I guess there will a lot more Russian women available now too.

I too feel compelled to defend Zenit, they are a very well supported club who through no fault of their own are sponsored by gazprom as are shalke04 in fact the two clubs have very big comparisons-both are not historically famous teams of europe like a liverpool, real madrid etc but they have had recent success built on that and have always had a good fanbase ready to support them once they started to compete with the bigger clubs. I cannot see any comparison between zenit and chelsea. Chelsea were a top 12/15 uk side who sometimes had good seasons and then bad seasons but were not a consistent european powerhouse or top 5 side, then they were on the brink of extinction completely potless and along came abromovich. instantly they became a top four side and a force in europe thanks 100% to investment.
Zenits main reason for success last two years are homegrown players that cost nothing coming of age such as asharvin etc and a very good manager who got the best out of his players. Perhaps also other bigger teams did not respect zenit as a force at their cost and zenit won the uefa cup. The only 'expensive' import was timoshuck from shakhtar. I cannot see how they are a second chelsea???

Very nice. I've also prefered old design. The new stadium will be 3 times bigger as current Petrovskiy stadium. How many members have Zenit? Is such a high capacity reasonable or is this project too megalomaniacal?

PaulFCB
December 30th, 2008, 12:35 AM
Thinking it's the only big football team in a city as big as Leningrad, I think games vs. the Moscow/European Cups may have way bigger demands then this capacity.
S. Petersburg also has the Kirov stadium, 80.000 seats but in old communist style, a modern stadium can easily fill up easier then a commie one.

The new stadium is built at the site of legendary Kirov Stadium. In 2006, it was a farewell match, that's the way tickets from him:) http://cs52.vkontakte.ru/u1276830/1294429/x_f26f29d8.jpg
The new stadium should solve the problem of a shortage of seats for the fans, the problem is especially acute in the matches against historical rivals: Spartak, CSKA, Dynamo Moscow, Lokomotiv and matches at the European arena, and construction sdvizhnoy roof eliminates the problem of climate! The new stadium should be a good platform for cultural and sports activities, as is done in Europe.
On a more add that the whole city is waiting for this stadium, it will give an impetus to the development not only Zenit, but for the whole of Russian football in particular!

PaulFCB

As I know everything remains the same. I read some interview recently, they're gonna keep the design but make it less expensive thru the using of cheaper materials...
They've also recently solved all the problems with company, that builds this arena. Now everything is gonna go faster.

This whole idea of curved stands providing better viewing angles is a bit of a myth. We all have necks that turn and eyes that follow movement so, assuming that we haven't suffered a neck injury, we have no difficulty following the action in rectangular stadiums.

However, if a football stadium has curved stands, it is inevitable that, other than in the corners, fans will be further away from the pitch than if the stands are in a rectangular configuration. And that can never be a good thing.

P.S. You'll find a great many other modern football stadia around the world that are bowl shaped on the outside but with a rectangular configuration of stands on the inside. Wembley and Emirates for starters; the new White Hart Lane soon to follow. And that's just in London.

Wembley has curved stands all the way. And it is so much better imho! Emirates has the "rectangular" 4 stands connected by curved stands, but the seats are relatively far away from the pitch. Compare this to Camp Nou which is also curved all the way, but where the seats are closer to the pitch (especially in the corners where the space in Camp Nou is crappy) then in the Emirates stadium.

I still favour slightly curved stands since it gives a stadium imho much more atmosphere to be in. And yes, I have been to Camp Nou, Bernabeu, Westfalenstadion, Nordbank Arena Hamburg, San Siro and of course De Kuip in Rotterdam. Which is the standard since 1936 for curved football stadium imho :)

If this stadium is finished with the quality that the Donbass Arena was then I think this stadium will be the best 50-70,000 seater stadium in Europe and quite possibly the world.
I like the looks of the design but there are only a few pics out there so I am visualising but if it ends up as good as I think then this stadium will be brilliant.

If you were to take, as your starting point, the minimum distance that seats can be to the pitch in the corner of the stadium and if you then built two stadiums - one with a rectangular configuration and another with curved stands - then the seats at the rectangular stadium would, on average, be closer to the pitch than at the curved stadium. No getting away from it.

The fact that the seats at the Emirates are further away from the stands than at the Camp Nou has nothing to do with the configuration. It's just that that gap was what Arsenal decided upon, for some bizarre reason.

As to curved stands having a superior atmosphere, I couldn't disagree more. I'd choose a tight stadium with stands close to and parallel to the pitch over a bowl shaped interior every time.

The Donbass-Arena is and will be better, even though the capacity is smaller but still it doesn't matter.

Well my reasoning goes as follows. Firstly IF this stadium was finished (i.e. seats, concourses, suites, jumbotorns etc.) we're finished to the same standard that they we're at the Donbass then I would prefer this stadium. I prefer the design of the roof and the interior design, don't get me wrong I do like the Donbass roof but this one is more striking and the interior is more original and compact which is very hard to do with a 60,000+ stadium. I do prefer the exterior of the Donbass by a long way but that isn't enough to make it a better stadium in my eyes, the heart of a stadium is the interior and this stadium has a better interior.

But like other have said we will see it might be that the jumbotron has poor quality pictures and is small, they have bucket seats installed and the concourses are non existant.

Actually if you look closely then you will see that this stadium actually has 2 large tiers.

I'm impressed with the roof but that's it. The Donbass Arena is so much more attractive. This suffers from the same syndrome as the Cowboys stadium - too many little sections. I suppose it's 3 basic tiers, but the lower 2 are split into 2 and 3 sections respectively. Sure access in and out will be great, but it just looks messy IMO.

The stadium yet has no name, but will be assured what to refer to Gazprom Arena, although this is not a fact, is a population survey in order to learn about the preferences of Petersburgers the name the new stadium, there appeared such names as Zenit Arena, Neva arena, stadium of St. Peter and others....

with all due respect, Your comment denotes ignorance about construction techniques as well as timing.
Let me explain you that the foundations take way more time than any part of the stadium simply because it will hold the rest of the structure.
Right now it will not rise as "soon" as "you" want simply because it takes time.
I hope this explanation help you understand that stadiums are not like making origami..

I agree, as the matter of fact, i have no idea on what they are doing :ohno: Seriously, the construction of this stadium is very confusing, every other stadium that I saw under construction was not just faster, but even better.

Persons who say that it's "slow" don't take many important things in mind.
On "ground level" there were processed about 600,000 cubic metre of a ground, more than 11,000 piles, on depth 25 - 27 metres, in diameter of 520 millimetres are finished; + 600 piles in diameter of 1,5 metres. Works in a power centre zone are conducted, works on a mooring are finished: deepening of a bottom for a ship canal and a covering of the top layer of a mooring modular ferro-concrete plates and asphalt.
For such terms, on such ground, in such widths, similar constructions still were never under construction. The area of all stadium constructions, not including a field, is about 157,000 sq. m.
In June 2008, Gazprom signed a 100 mln. contract with Imtech for construction of basic technical infrastructure - all solutions in the fields of heating, climate control, electrical engineering, instrumentation, security, fire prevention, fire detection, extinguishing solutions...

nmaister have no idea about.. let's say.. anything, especially in stadium constructure, just like another who thought that it's like origami.

+ we don't have deadlines of UEFA comissions)

And this is not a competition "who is faster", when the most important things are quality and safety.

Why are you guys getting pissed just because of one word "slow". I agree with Veleshomais as well , that the progress is slow but i don't see what could be so offending in his statement. You guys have been saying the same thing in our Ukrainian stadiums threads too...and we respected your opinions..so what is the problem ??

Anyway i think this stadium looks very good and will be beautiful once done. Congratulations St-Petersburg

Progress is fine, St Petersburg is in no hurry to get the stadium completed by some looming deadline.

Don't be so offensive. It's always good when new stadiums are building, especialy in Ukraine in such hard economic situation.

Cost on august 2008: 23,713,560,000 roubles. Dollar was ~24 at that time, so it's about 988,065,000 $

It's planned to allocate 10-12 billions of roubles in 2009.

Are you kidding me? Ukraine produces one of the best steel in the world, there is nothing cheap about any of the stadiums in Ukraine that are being built. The Donbass Arena is "Not bad", its excellent, everything in the Donbass Arena is as good and as modern as any other elite stadiums in eastern europe. The Donbass Arena is now one of the best stadiums in Europe.
