MSC showcase to include startup incubator

KUALA LUMPUR: The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Showcase being built at KL Sentral — the capital city’s main transport hub — will feature a 550sq m incubator centre.

The incubator, to be located upstairs from the main showcase area, would be able to accommodate up to 10 startup companies at a time.

The first batch of startups is expected to move into the incubator this month, said KL Sentral Sdn Bhd chief executive Chan Chee Meng.

KL Sentral said it received many applications, however 10 were selected. The selection was done by the Incubator Selection Committee spearheaded by MDeC’s Creative Multimedia Department.

Basically, the incubator offices cater for two to four persons per office. The tenancy is for a minimum of six months, extendable up to two years, and the startups are expected to graduate by then.

The first batch of companies under incubation include creative content and multimedia content developers, animators, and a post-production house.

Meanwhile, the main reason for building the MSC Showcase is to help address the problem of keeping up with current developments in the Multimedia Super Corridor.

At this time, anyone interested in finding out more about the MSC and its services would have to to travel a long way out of the capital city to its epicentre, Cyberjaya.

The distance and time involved puts off the casual visitor, and makes it inconvenient for visiting professionals or businessmen who lack their own transport, according to MDeC.

The MSC Showcase at KL Sentral should take care of the accessibility problem: 70,000 people — commuters and international travellers alike — come through KL Sentral every day, said Chan. By 2020, this is expected to rise to 300,000 a day, or 100 million a year.

Six railway lines pass through or terminate at KL Sentral, including the KLIA Express, making the location of the Showcase especially convenient for business travellers.

The almost-completed showcase would be KL Sentral Sdn Bhd’s contribution to the MSC cause, according to Chan.

The KL Sentral development has been designated as a “Cybercentre,” one of the staging points for the nationwide rollout of the MSC. It will be the pilot of a series of MSC showcases in cybercentres, each located in a corridor in a different part the country.

What works there would be adopted in other MSC showcases, Chan said.

The 330sq m showcase would have a regularly refreshed multimedia exhibit of MSC companies and their exhibits, including a show reel featuring the works of MSC-based animation studios.

It will feature a resource centre with a library, where students, scholars and entrepreneurs can conduct research into those MSC companies and their activities. A counselor would also be on hand to help budding technopreneurs form startup companies.

In addition, to help fund and promote these companies, both at home and abroad, the showcase could help bring together entrepreneurs, investors, financiers and government agencies.

The KL Sentral MSC Showcase would focus primarily but not solely on content, according to Multimedia Development Corp (MDeC) vice-president Kamil Othman.

Other showcases might focus on areas that are relevant to the IT activities in the vicinities; for instance, a showcase in Penang might feature hardware development, or one on the East Coast might feature IT activities related to agriculture.

“The main purpose of the showcase is to educate and inspire Malaysians about the MSC and to answer the question: What has the MSC achieved?

“We want people to come away from the showcase with the knowledge that the MSC is alive, that it is a long-term national project, and that it is about creation and innovation,” Kamil said.

The showcase would not necessarily limit itself to MSC companies. Relevant student projects from the Multimedia University and other local universities might also be on display, to show what young Malaysians are capable of, Kamil said.

He also said that MDeC would organise talks, to be given by Malaysians who are working abroad in IT and content creation, and workshops at the showcase.

In addition, it would also highlight creative work by Malaysians, such as by showing art films that are not being screened at commercial cinemas.

Kamil said the showcase would keep a database of visitors and their subsequent involvement with the MSC, in order to track the showcase’s effectiveness.

Touch ’n Go sales outlet at KL Sentral
25 Feb 2007
NewStaritTimes

KUALA LUMPUR: Commuters who use Touch ’n Go cards can now do their card transactions at the new sales outlet at KL Sentral.

Commuters can buy Touch ’n Go and SmartTAG cards, reload the cards and make enquiries regarding the card services for LRT, KTM Komuter, Monorail and Express Rail Link.

Rangkaian Segar Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Yahya Yaacob opened the outlet yesterday.

The first such Touch ’n Go outlet in Jalan Klang Lama was opened in August last year by Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

"The location of the second outlet is ideal as 50,000 to 100,000 people come to KL Sentral every day," Yahya said.

In conjunction with Touch ’n Go’s 10th anniversary, Rangkaian Segar has introduced a reload amount of RM10.

"This new reload will attract the younger customers as the amount is more affordable."

CHAN Chee Meng remembers how hard it was to convince businesses to open at KL Sentral six years ago. He was responsible for the development of a transport hub that would also double up as a massive commercial development.

Investors were not prepared to make the move. It is located in Brickfields, famous for quarters of the national railway staff, a stark contrast to its up-scale neighbour Bangsar.

"It was difficult to convince business people to open shops at the main building at Stesen Sentral when it was launched in 2001 as many thought they would not prosper due to the location and lack of infrastructure," Chan, CEO of Kuala Lumpur Sentral Sdn Bhd (KLSSB) said.

But it is different today.

The main building at Stesen Sentral is now fully occupied and bursting at the seams with shops, allowing travellers and shoppers to buy goods ranging from shoes to luxury items.

Brickfields has also changed drastically.

There are new pedestrian walkways, old buildings repainted, roads upgraded, shops being transformed and more quality retailers and budget hotels moving in, spicing up the area.

Property prices have also shot up.

"Since the landmark of Brickfields has changed, many business people are flocking to the area to have a presence at KL Sentral while prices of neighbouring properties such as shoplots, shophouses, offices, serviced apartments and condominiums, have shot up by three times," Chan added.

History has proven that KL Sentral is a good idea. However, like many large projects during the late nineties, it had to contend with the Asian financial crisis.

KLSSB's parent, Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB), had more than RM800 million in short-term debt and it made a net loss in 2001. This is hardly the position that a firm wants to be in when it's supposed to develop a multi-billion-ringgit project.

Chan admitted that financing was the main problem and the project only took shape starting 2004 because investors' confidence started to build up.

"In terms of development, the early start was difficult but now we are in a stronger position as we have refinanced our existing bonds with a new sukuk (Islamic bond)," he said.

The project also got another boost when pension fund the Employees Provident Fund, an investor with deep pockets, became MRCB's new major shareholder.

Today, about RM1.8 billion or 27 per cent of the project has been completed. There are some RM2 billion worth of projects or 29 per cent of the entire development that is being carried out currently.

Apart from Stesen Sentral, the other completed components include Plaza Sentral Phase 1 in 2001, three blocks of corporate office towers that made total sales of RM254 million, and Plaza Sentral Phase 2.

About RM1.8 billion or 27 per cent of the KL Sentral project has been completed.
This consists of office suites that was done in 2006.

The Suasana Sentral condominium, completed in 2002, fetched a total revenue of RM249 million, while five-star Hilton Kuala Lumpur and Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur opened their doors for business in 2004.

MRCB, meanwhile, has completed building a purpose-built 30-storey corporate office tower for Lembaga Tabung Haji for RM161.46 million, early this year.

"The estimated RM8.3 billion KL Sentral project is now undertaking one of the largest commercial developments, which are estimated to generate over RM2 billion in GDV," Chan said.

He said the commercial development comprises of the Suasana Sentral Condominiums with a total of 600 units and four blocks of office buildings to house the headquarters of UEM Group, Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (Mida), Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM) and the Quill group.

It would also have a lifestyle centre, known as Sooke Sentral, which includes a fitness, spa and business centre, restaurants and alfresco dining facilities.

Additionally, a massive RM450 million retail development comprising a mall, which will be linked with Stesen Sentral through the KL Monorail, is also being built now.

The commercial and retail developments are due to be completed by late 2008 or early 2009.

And after all of that, KL Sentral will still have about 13 hectares of land for future developments. These include a massive commercial centre and entertainment and media hub.

KLSSB is also in the midst of building an immigration centre, a one-stop investment approval centre, for foreign investors.

Chan, however, refuted claims that the project was doing well as it was getting a lot of support from government-owned companies and agencies.

He said government bodies like Mida and SSM came in as they saw the huge potential at KL Sentral.

"Properties around transportation hubs have always generated good values around the world. People like staying next to infrastructure.

"It just so happens that we have government agencies that want to be here such as Mida and SSM as they see great potential here, where they can estimate the kind of customers they would get, thanks to the infrastructure," he said.

Apart from being the heart of the country's transportation hub, the KL Sentral project would be a catalyst to the country's property and tourism sectors, which would indirectly boost the economy further.

"We have shared our success story with countries like Singapore, Indonesia, Malawi, India, Nepal and some countries in the Middle East, which do not have such a massive infrastructure development similar to KL Sentral. The KL Sentral concept is still new in South-East Asia," Chan said.

In fact, MRCB has pitched to replicate the concept of the project in other Malaysian cities and abroad.

In developed countries, there are integrated hubs similar to KL Sentral such as IFC in Hong Kong, Shinjuku in Japan, Canary Wharf in London and Atlantic Station in the US.

Touts get the better of travellers at KL Sentral
Monday May 19, 2008
By BAVANI M
TheStar

GOOD service is the key to a successful business. However, bus touts operating at the KL Sentral Bus Terminal may have taken their jobs a little too seriously to the extent that their services border on harassment.

Y.S Tan, who was on her way to the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) on Sunday morning, said she was harassed by a group of touts offering tickets for both the Skybus and Aerobus services.

“I was coming down the escalator with my luggage and, before I could catch my breath, a group of men wearing red and yellow t-shirts got in my way and one of them rudely grabbed my bag.

“They were literally shouting into my face to go with them. It was annoying and a little scary,” she said.

Tan is not alone, as over the past few months, StarMetro had received numerous complaints from the public regarding the boisterous touts operating at KL Sentral terminal.

A Star reader, Melinda Yong, had recently written about her unpleasant experiences at KL Sentral during the Labour Day holiday.

She said: “As we were going down the stairs with our hand luggage, we were 'welcomed’ by a group of men in yellow t-shirts cajoling us to board their bus.

“They offered us a cheaper fare of RM8.

“However, before we could make up our mind, one guy had already grabbed my husband’s bag and put it inside the bus!”

Yong had written that she was told that the bus would depart at 7am.

However, according to Yong, the bus did not depart at the scheduled time and she and her husband had to wait another 20 minutes for the bus to be filled.

On top of that, it took slightly more than an hour to reach the LCCT as it made a detour to drop off some passengers.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/5/19/central/m_02loading.jpg

Hard at work: Aerobus employees loading luggage onto the bus.

Commuters at KL Sentral have complained of being harassed by touts all the time and some even fear for their lives.

StarMetro visited the area recently and witnessed the situation.

It was obvious that both the Skybus (red buses) and Aerobus (yellow buses) had to resort to some aggressive marketing strategies to attract passengers as they both operate at the same spot with the same schedule.

Apart from shouting and screaming, they have also left passengers fuming when they grab luggage and haul it aboard their buses.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/5/19/central/m_02crowd.jpg

Come aboard: The public being greeted by
Skybys employees near the escalator.

Some were even spotted blocking the exit of the escalator, trying to get customers and causing congestion in the process.

K. Selvi said anyone carrying a big bag would be approached and it was annoying.

“We are not shouting or disturbing anyone,” a Skybus staff member, who identified himself as Yogeswaran, countered.

“We are informing and educating – it’s very loud here so we have to be a bit loud,” he added.

However, it seemed obvious that he was shouting to drown out the yelling of his competitors.

An Aerobus staff member reiterated that they were only informing customers about the schedule and were not harassing anyone.

“We have to work harder to convince people. They think we are not the official bus because we don’t carry the AirAsia logo,” he said.

Both companies, however, insisted that they departed on time and were always on schedule.

They said each had a boundary and they were not allowed to go beyond the boundary.

However, the minute the photographer was out of sight, the touts were back in action and were seen crowding the escalator area again.

Skybus Ventures Sdn Bhd owner Chris Thiagarajah, who operates the red Skybuses, believes in letting the customers do the choosing.

“We do not pay our staff any special incentives for bringing in customers because we tried that before and it did not work.

“We are a service provider and since we are the official bus operator for AirAsia, we have a reputation to maintain,” he said.

Aerobus operator Mohd Faiz Ng Abdullah said he would prefer it if there were only one ticketing agent operating both the buses and was also agreeable to the concept of letting the customers decide.

“We only shout if they (Skybus staff members) shout,” Faiz added.

Both operators, however, denied that their employees were aggressive and rude.

Meanwhile, Semasa Sentral Sdn Bhd operations manager Hazman Zulkipli said the station would be stationing at least two enforcement officers at the site to monitor the situation.

“It is the operators’ responsibility to monitor their staff. We merely come up with the rules and regulations,” he said, adding that Sentral is planning on drawing a boundary line between the escalator and the location where the buses are parked.

“There has to be about 20ft gap where the touts are not allowed to encroach.

“Only two employees from the bus company would be allowed to be stationed at the spot.

“We don’t want a situation where there are too many people hanging around,” Hazman said, adding that those who break the rules would be given a warning and if they continue to do so, would be fined and barred from working there.

MAS’ ticket office opens new centre at KL Sentral from Saturday
Monday December 8, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines will integrate ticketing operations for the Klang Valley at KL Sentral in Brickfields from Saturday. Operations at its former head office in Jalan Sultan Ismail will cease.

Senior general manager (network and revenue management) Dr Amin Khan said the move was part of ongoing efforts to consolidate direct distribution channel operations for ticketing and related services at one centralised location.

“This flagship facility is in its final stages of expansion and once completed will be better equipped to cater to the needs of our customers,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“Our premier ticket office at KL Sentral operates daily from 4.30am to midnight and offers a wide range of air travel related services for walk-in passengers.”

These include reservations and ticketing, reissuance of tickets for travel on Malaysia Airlines and MASwings, Internet booking kiosks, Golden Holidays facilities and refunds processing.

i wonder why the management put japanese in the platforms rather than chinese and tamil...

26% of population in malaysia is chinese, 13% is indian, japanese? not more than 1% i think? 24-25% of malaysian able to read chinese and make it as primary language, tamil is 10-13%. then is bahasa indonesia, bahasa iban, not even japanese in the line.

if the next language to be installed is korean, german, french... means the management is totally... *>.<*

The only reason why there's Japanese signboards is that there was an anticipated increase in the number of Japanese visitors during the planning of both KLIA and KL Sentral.

The emergence of simplified Chinese and Arabic scripts on KLIA signboards reflects the increase of mainland Chinese and Middle Eastern visitors in recent years.

I think there are more Malaysian citizens which is ethnic Chinese and use Chinese as primary language and ethnic Indian and use Tamil as primary language is much more than Japanese tourists.

Not citizen first but tourist first? Why don't learn Singaporean signboards?

^^

This is Malaysia. Malaysia has one national language that is Bahasa Melayu, as stated in constitution. Coincidentally Platform is same spelling in BM and English. Singapore on the other hand has 4 national languages, So they put the 4 languages in signs. So in Malaysia those ethnics Chinese and Indians, although are larger in numbers as Japanese tourists, they are bound to this article, hence not many official signs in mandarin and tamil.

even chinese and tamil is not national language, but the user reaches more than 30% of the population of Malaysia, in case of KL, more than 50% of its population uses chinese. language to used by signboards should base on convenience not constitution, and it is not bounded by constitution. Single language / dual language signboard does not include chinese is acceptable, but the Chinese and Tamil should be in the third and fourth language in priority, not Japanese and Arabic.

LOL.. Didn't know that's in Malay :bash:
Was just basing that on the fact that there was a surge in Middle East tourist numbers in the country :P
Inclusion of simplified Chinese proves effective to Chinese tourists. But if the Chinese script is included in signs, why not Tamil?

In another matter, KL Sentral needs to improve the bus waiting area, especially the access.

Only one narrow escalator and stairs, that makes the access between the concourse and the bus waiting area is too crowded.

They should add the number of stairs, escalators and also...lifts.

DBKL should just cover up the train track and create more public space - a linkage between KL Sentral and Midvally.

The fly over is just a short one to skip the traffic light. No there is no plan to turn Jalan Bangsar to 1 way.

I like all the new fly over DBKL is building now.. All has the fancy nice design. The first nice flyover they made is the one linking to Jalan Hang Tuah one. Good future direction.

They should add the number of stairs, escalators and also...lifts.The KL Sentral bus area is actually a service tunnel - there was never a plan for any kind of bus hub at KL Sentral.

It was only because of RapidKL using KL Sentral as a 'hub' that buses started using the centre. Then someone proposed the Airport buses and we got the mess that we have now.

My view is that we should put the passenger waiting areas for the buses upstairs at the station concourse level - but keep the buses downstairs, using the existing 'terminal' space as a holding area.

The parking area above the station can be used as a holding area for taxies instead of parking for private cars.

It's not too hard to do - simply build a 2nd ramp to connect the roads at concourse level with Jalan Tun Sambanthan, and expand the system of ramps to allow buses to go up and down relatively easily.

But we know that's not gonna happen.

Cheers, m

Chauffeured limo from house to KL Sentral
By Zaidi Isham Ismail Published: 2010/10/21

EXPRESS Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL), which introduced a chauffeured executive limousine service in 2004 to hotel and office customers, has now expanded the service to homeowners in the Klang Valley within a 40km radius of Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KL Sentral).

ERL, 50 per cent owned by YTL Corp Bhd and 40 per cent by Lembaga Tabung Haji, provides daily rail services between KL Sentral and the KL International Airport (KLIA).

ERL chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said the rail owner and operator provided up to 30 limousine trips daily to office and hotel guests previously.

"With the expansion of the service to homeowners, we are targeting growth of 50 per cent in trips to encourage ERL's ridership," Noormah told reporters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

She said ERL was expanding the service because air travellers occasionally departed from their homes and not from their offices or hotels.

"We are targeting busy executives leaving from home on a business trip, who value on-time home pick-ups and precise train schedules and flights, families on holidays who need free porter service, friends travelling together or as gifts for loved ones," she added.

The limousine service, however, only provides trips to KL Sentral. It does not transport passengers to the KLIA.

Guests will be driven in a Toyota Camry, Ssangyong Stavic or the Mercedes E-Class.

The VIP service costs RM135 per person per trip for zone one destination (10-25km radius) and RM185 for zone two (40km radius). An accompanying guest needs to pay for the train ticket only.

Upon arrival at the KL Sentral departure hall, guests will be greeted by a VIP service representative and a porter who will assist with the luggage, and will be escorted to the KLIA Express train.

Guests who fly into Kuala Lumpur will be greeted by a VIP service representative at the KLIA baggage reclaim hall and enjoy complimentary porter service from the baggage carousel to the KLIA Express train and waiting limousine at KL Sentral.

In conjunction with the launch, ERL is giving away one extra KLIA Express train ticket for every home booking for the service.

Bookings must be made between October 21 and November 3 for travel by December 31.

In my experience from several train journeys in Europe and Japan, train stations do not usually have many seats for waiting travelers. There are a few seats but not enough for all passengers on the platform, you either stand or sit on your luggage not many will sit on the dirty platform floor. If you want to sit one has to go to the cafe or restaurant.

One thing that we can learn from the European rail system, even though their station looks old and serabut, their platform utilisation is very high. Train arrive and depart every 1 minute..at least that's what i see in Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam and London

Sometimes the stations doesn't even look like one!Just a platform with somekind of shelter. Its the same story in Australia.I want to spend as little time as possible at the station,That can only happen when the trains are ON TIME.

Why cant they have the same for the KTM platforms to keep the cool air in?

Probably because of our KTM Komuter trains come from many models which have different location of doors...some in the middle, some at the end of a coach...

dengilo

You right about that! They can find a creative way of doing it,It doesnt have to be fully automated like LRT or KLIA express ones.Just that the KTM platform is creepy and hot during peak hours. They will have to find ways to improve the lighting and ventilation system for sure.

And yeah, the wall should be removed such that natural sun light may come in through the side OR they could just have more fluorescent lights and extra ventilation systems installed at platform level.

MRCB to build linking bridges at KL Sentral
Published: 2012/04/24
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/20120424180855/Article/index_html

Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB) has invested about RM40 million to build several linking bridges to facilitate smooth movements between buildings at Kuala Lumpur Sentral.

Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohamed Razeek Hussain said the connection to Lot E, a green platinum building, has been completed, with escalators and elevators for the handicapped.

"We are also building a linkage from the KL Sentral Station to the lifestyle centre, Sooka Sentral, as well as for the Tun Sambanthan Monorail Station to the Nu Sentral Retail Mall," he told reporters after delivering his speech at Semasa Sentral Sdn Bhd's 11th anniversary today.

Mohamed Razeek said the linking bridges would be completed by end-July or in August. On passengers, he said, currently they are targeting 150,000 commuters daily.

"With the completion of the Mass Rail Transit in 2017, for the peak period between 8 am and 10 am, we are expecting the MRT to bring about 10,000 passengers an hour to the KL Sentral station.

"That will be an addition of 30,000 to 40,000 passengers, on top of the 150,000 daily. The station was built to cater to 250,000 commuters daily, so we are within the capacity," he said.

Mohamed Razeek also said MRCB would allocate another RM13 million to RM14 million for upgrading work at the station to improve the overall condition of the station.

"For the current financial year, we also plan to provide WiFi services for the passengers at the station to keep them occupied during their waiting time," he said.

On Eastern Dispersal Link in Johor Baharu, Mohamed Razeek said they are waiting for the government's feedback.

The EDL provides the link from Pasir Gudang to the North-South Expressway, Hulu Tiram and Senai, he said.

"We notice that Jalan Tebrau is now less congested, that means the EDL is performing its function, and would benefit people living in Johor Baharu.

"I must emphasise that it is toll-free for the people living there, and for the RM1.4 billion project cost, it is free forever," he added. -- Bernama

No. There will be long bridge between KL Sentral, NU Sentral and Monorail.

Monorail will not be extended to NU Sentral.
