http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/Nicholas_Varley/Leeds/town20hall.jpg

I'm incredibly biased, however I'd vote for my own home city's Town Hall. It's a fabulous building, screams of Victorian classiness with a hint of arrogance and a touch of the gritty Northern character that fits the city in which it resides.

I like the dome as it's a little different. The inverted panels look amazing. In real life it's such an imposing, grand building that you can't keep your eyes off it!

Leeds has a fantastic town-hall, but I'd call that a cupola, not a dome.

Some notable domes from Melbourne, Australia:

1. Royal Exhibition Building

Constructed for the 1888 Exhibition, and inspired by Florence Cathedral, perhaps. Architect Joseph Reed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/rylexhb0968.jpg

Now on the World Heritage List, particularly because it is the (sole?) remaining building from the Crystal-Palace style edifices which were thrown up to showcase their cities in the late nineteenth century.

2. Flinders Street Station:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/flst_5005.jpg

By night, from the opposite side:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/flst_nt_2811.jpg

Designed by a couple of railway draughtsmen and constructed the first decade of the 20th Century, this building remains, essentially, the gateway to the city. In the last photo you can see the Anglican Cathedral, diagonally opposite. in the first photo, Eureka Tower, contestably the tallest residential building on Earth.

3. State Library, Melbourne.

Also constructed in the early years of the 20th Century, and apparently the largest reinforced concrete dome in the world at the time ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/lib5512.jpg

An inside view ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/libint0064.jpg

4. 333 Collins Street ... let's go commercial!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/col333_0021.jpg

This 1980's domed office building encloses an earlier domed banking chamber ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/333int_0075.jpg

I guess that doesn't really prove it's domed.

5. Newman College, Melbourne University

Designed by Walter Burley Griffin, originally from Chicago, the architect/town-planner who designed Canberra, a very interesting building ... and a very interesting dome.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/college5010.jpg

6. The Supreme Court

I'm starting to scratch the barrel here (not that I'm running out of domes!), but this is a very important building in this city ... figures in news bulletins, every week.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/spct5366.jpg

7. State/Forum/Rapallo Theatre / Revival Centre ...

I love this building, but it needs some repair. I guess if Leeds Town Hall has just a cupola, this is a cupola too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Domes/state0037.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Daily/IMG_2878crp3.jpg

8 Parliament House, Melbourne

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Public%20buildings/e1c10bf9.jpg

Like most American states, we aspired to have a dome on our state legislature, this building, but it never happened ...

You realize that this is a reconstruction of the original baroque church that was destroyed during WW2? Therefore it's not just a new building, everything was reconstructed from old document and photos from before the war, also old stone pieces were incorporated into the reconstruction.

Hello to everyone! I will give this little support to this thread. The pictures are from Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador, El Salvador; it has the biggest dome in Central America.

I'm pretty sure that this dome is very simple compared with some of the others that all of you have already posted before, but I believe that is interesting to see pictures from other latitudes. So I present, proudly, the dome of the Cathedral of San Salvador, city where I live. Enjoy! :)

2) Sanctuary of Vicoforte di Mondovì, Piemonte, Italia

(Apart from kidding, this is my n.2 favourite dome after Pantheon in Rome)

Largest elliptic dome in the world. (large 37,15 x 24,90)

The decoration in fresco of the 6,032 square metres of the cupola’s vault was completed in 1752 by Mattia Bortoloni and Felice Biella, and the sanctuary finally attained its current form in 1884, when the campanili were built along with the three façades.

The State House in Annapolis, MD, is the world's largest wooden dome and dates from the late 1700s.

http://pics4.city-data.com/cpicv/vfiles9862.jpg

The State House is Providence, RI, is the second largest self-supporting marble dome in the world after that at the Vatican.

Pantheon hands down.

It's not even a contest.

Agreed. Just the thought that they already had the knowledge and materials 2000 years ago to build this structure, let alone the fact that it has survived in pristine condition until this very day, is mind-boggling already.

Unlike Malls, Hotels and other "stuff" religious buildings, the older they are, the most famous they are. Although it is illegal for non-Muslims to enter mosques in the United Arab Emirates, this mosque will be an exception. The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority announced that tours of the mosques will be given to both Muslims and non-Muslims beginning in mid-March 2008 in order to promote cultural and religious understanding.

Wouldn't say this is the best dome but in the new world our Royal Exhibition Building Dome has some historic meaning as the place where our Government first stood for the Federation of Australia in 1901.....and this building is the first Australian Building with World Heratige listing....and it's the only World Exhibition Building still existing from the 19th century.

Very beautiful buildings! Especially Agia Sofia, Pantheon and Taj Mahal.
Surely not the most impressive, but still the largest Byzantine style cathedral in the Balkans and among the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world:

Agios Andreas (Saint Andreas/Andrews), Patra, Greece:

Originally the Tabernacle was built without any nails. The famed acoustics are so good a pin dropped at the pulpit under the organ pipes can be heard in any part of the room.

The U.S Capitol Building is the best domed building in the U.S, and top 5 in the World. Its architecture is simply splendid. It has just the right dimensions. Not too tall, not too wide, just right. The columns, the leafing design, the 4 level wedding cake design.

But I think its symbolism may be more important than its design. I think no other dome in the world can conjure up such varied emotions across the political spectrum and in global politics. From patriotism, protest, hate, cynicism and hope in the prospects of progress through democracy. The politics that go through this building, the debates, the policies, the Presidential State of the Union speeches, carries a lot of weight that reverberates through the social, economic and political fabric of American life. To foreigners it may represent the successes of American leadership, to some it represents quite the opposite; the failures, setbacks and abuses of American power. In all I think the Capitol Dome captures all the glory and tribulations of democracy.
