The skyline is already dense (refer to pic below) ... because of the hilly terrain, you don't get to see the entire skyline.

Auckland already has the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere - Sky Tower.

A 67 storey apartment tower is proposed one city block away from Sky Tower ... there are also a couple of skyscrapers rising as I type this ... as they say - watch this space ;)

You have to also remember that Auckland only has a population of 1.3 million people (same as Memphis, Jacksonville or Port Elizabeth) ... with this in mind, I think that the skyline kicks ass :)

Hot summers and cold, rainy winters.

In a nutshell - Warm and sometimes humid summers and mild wet winters. summer high of mid to late 20's c, but feels alot hotter in the sun. Winter highs are mid teens c, but it can rain for weeks on end. Other than than a very enjoyable climate - never too hot or too cold.

Not bad! Sounds almost same kind of weather as my city, Seattle.

Thank you. All the threads with a date stated at the top are shot with a Panasonic FZ50 with a LW55 wide conversion lens giving the equivalent of a 24.5mm lens.

The posts with no dates stated at the top are mostly shot with a Canon 1DIIN and a 16-35mm 2.8L lens.

There are a number of EXIF readers available for either IE or firefox that will allow you to right click on an image that is open in the web browser and it display the EIXF info which includes camera make shutter speeds etc. etc. (Exif info can be stripped off at time of saving though).

Yes, very much so. The use of trains has increased by 26% from September last year (2006). :)

There are two constructions going on there, although from the image you are forgiven for thinking there is only one. The one in the foreground is the new BNZ HQ building in Queen Street - the scaffolding you see is holding up the Old Jean Batten building which is been saved and will be incorporated into the new building (due to its Heritage status.) The one in the background is an addition of floors to the existing Stamford Hotel in Albert Street.

The glass fascade is very unique and it doesn't match another type of glass fascade at same building... I think it is very random building but I like it! :)

Quite a bit of Auckland's heritage has remained intact (unfortunately not everything) with pockets around Queen & Shortland Street .... O'Connell Street ... High & Lorne Streets. All can be found downtown.

There are also many smaller "town centres" that have clusters of heritage buildings eg. Devonport, Mount Eden etc.

Well you will just have to come and experience that wacky feeling first hand. If you want to visit here in the summertime (your winter) then the best weather is usually February - when its nice and hot (24/26 celcius) with little rain. Other than that it does rain quite a bit in Auckland all year around and its not uncommon to get 4 seasons in one day.

Very nice. Auckland is an excellent city. One thing I noticed though, in a lot of your pictures there doesn't seem to be a lot of people out walking through the CBD. I have never been to Auckland so I dont know, but is the downtown a busy place most of the time?

Auckland is way too nice to have ghettos. :)

Ghetto's in the sense were people from one ethnicity tend to congregate in the same locales does occur in Auckland. By and by most new immigrants tend to amalgamate into the general melting pot that is Auckland but there still remains area's which have a strong ethnocentric concentration. For example:

White South Africans - unlike Enigma and Mr KF - tend to congregate in Auckland's North Shore suburbs of east coast bays.
Strong Korean presence around Northcote.
Refugees such as from the infamous Tampa tend to stay in or near Mt Roskill.

Some one needs to grab some pics on New North Rd around Mt Roskill to really get a non European or non Polynesian feel.

There are only a few refugees from Zimababwe and Somalia but they are definitely the minority in Auckland. There are no ghettoes in Auckland BUT there are "rough" (by NZ standards) neighbourhoods .... I come from Africa and there is nothing in Auckland that even closely resembles the type of living conditions that you find there or in any other developing nation.

When we just arrived in Auckland we were taken to a suburb called Otara, which is apparently as bad as it can get, but we thought that it looked like any other middle class suburb. The difference is the way that people behave i.e. drinking and drugs which leads to family violence etc.

It is not really awful day... We got same type of weather in Seattle. It is fabulous! :) Auckland still looks fabulous on these gray days! :)

well it is very hard to explain..maybe because in shanghai 10pm everyday, poeple would still be shopping and out having dinner in restaurants, having fun etc. Streets will be full of cars

while my neighbour sleeps at 9pm everyday it is almost like a deserted town, even in downtown

this is just my personal opinion

well! u cant just say auckland is boring! u r comparing it to SHANGHAI!!!which must have a population about 10 to 15 times more than auckland....
auckland has only 1 million people

Don't worry about it. Boredom is a state of mind. I don't need 20 million people shopping to be excited. Create your own fun. Do something interesting.

yeah, after living in auckland for 5 yrs, i kinda find my own way of fun.eg surfing on internet and playing games etc...the best thing is that high school here is as easy as primary school in shanghai :)

A couple of towers are proposed for the city ... one is 67 floors (and will be built just to the right of sky-tower in the pano) and another 2 are planned at 40 & 46 floors just to the left of sky-tower which will definitely densify the skyline. For a city of 1.4 million I think that the skyline is incredible.

A lot of heritage has been lost but things have changed dramatically - everything built before 1940 is now protected and there is a historic core in the centre of the city ... refer to this thread and you will be able to see how much heritage there still is ( http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=433953 ) .... sadly it could have been better but then again Auckland is a very young city .... founded in 1840.

Winter in the South Island and centre of the North snows. It snows OCCASIONALLY in the coastal South Island cities. Snow may fall on the hills surrounding Wellington.

Auckland summers are warm and humid - can be from 26-sometimes low 30's C. Pretty much hardly any variation. Temp rises as summer approaches and stays steady over the 4 months, day in and night out :).

Christchurch on the other hand has short hot DRY summers. Temperate extremes over a vary short period of time. There and other locales in the South Island can get into the high 30's and sometimes 40 C's.

looks very nice but nothing special beyond a main city of a country...

Auckland has an incredible setting - often referred to as Sydney - New Zealand. Auckland is built on a narrow isthmus between two harbours, and is surrounded by 49 extinct volcanoes (the largest concentration of volcanoes in the world) and picturesque islands. I have often asked these people that say that they are bored what it is that they do and my usual conclusion is that THEY are boring .... if I ask them - have you been here and have you been there - they think that I am mad .... many people living in Auckland don't know what it has to offer. It is a shame really.

Point taken but you can't separate them - they are part & parcel of each other which contributes to a cities characteristics, life-style and design. One can also go as far as to say that the one is more populated than the other or one is older than the other ..... gee-wiz, we will drive ourselves crazy :nuts: and we could debate this until the cows come home :lol:

The fact is - Auckland is Auckland because of it's place in the World and Paris is Paris because of it's place in the world ... each one is unique (thank God for that ;) ) ....

Agreed re: the boring apartments and many Aucklanders will agree as well.... City's do make their fair share of mistakes. Fortunately there are now procedures in place that will prevent theses kind of buildings from popping up again.

Well Auckland is NOT in a desert and Vancouver has a great setting which enhances its beauty. Fact is fact - you can't change that. I have been to Tel Aviv and it would be 100 times better if the setting was better - in my own personal opinion - I love forests, greenery, mountains, bays etc. Tel Aviv isn't blessed with that BUT I still think that Tel Aviv is unique and offers other advantages such as great weather ... history ... location ... culture etc. etc. ... Each to their own I guess but I understand where you are coming from and I am bored now - sorry ;)

I loved it but I didn't have enough time there (however I had enough time to go out clubbing ;) .... my favourite experience in Israel was Jerusalem and Masada .... I love history and Israel has more than enough of that ;)

Everything in Auckalnd built before 1940 is now protected thats a great idea, other cities should take note, 1940 is a good year to protect until as architecture became a lot more streamlined after the late 30s.

i think the people out of auckland hate auckland is that they dont like auckland beating their city :D

^^^ At the moment the city is really hideous ... there is so much construction that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get good photos. I can't wait for 2011 - maybe then things would have died down (just a little ;) )
