In light of growing concerns about global warming and the volatility in the prices of petroleum, the search for alternative fuels is now more in vogue than ever. The latest indication of such can be found in the Apama sector of Guaynabo, where an upstart company called Biodiesel & Fuels of Puerto Rico (B&F) has opened the first biodiesel plant in the Caribbean.
The company is the brainchild of Carlos Báez, José Martí and Carlos González, who have each dedicated their own brand of expertise to their new partnership. “We each have our own companies, and have delegated responsibility to others so we could concentrate on this new endeavor,” commented Martí, president of B&F. The $800,000 plant, which produces glycerol in addition to biodiesel, is currently able to produce 150,000 gallons a month, with future improvements set to increase production to 260,000 monthly gallons.
The company plans to open a second plant in southwest Puerto Rico sometime in the future, as well as a plant in Dominican Republic that would significantly increase production output, González revealed to CARIBBEAN BUSINESS. Their long-term goal is of producing four million gallons a year, Martí said.
