Finally the Malmö Tower, located in the new neighbourhood of Hyllie, close to the bridge and CPH, has been approved.
The initial proposed height for this building was 180 meters, ie. ten meters lower then the current tallest in Malmö (and Scandinavia) - Turning Torso. But both the architects and the developers wanted to make it taller and finally the municipality has approved it at 216 meters. This will make it the tallest building in Scandinavia and Northern Europe - as well as the tallest residential building in Europe (not counting Russia).
The tower will be standing right next to one of the stations on the new train tunnel line that will link the whole of central Malmö with several stations to the bridge to Copenhagen, making the journey between the two Scandinavian cities even shorter than todays 25-30 minutes. The travel time between Hyllie (Malmö Tower's location) and CPH airport will be 12 minutes.

The tower will also be located next to one of the largest malls in Scandinavia, as well as the largest event/icehockey arena in Sweden.

Basic facts:

Project name: Malmö Tower
Height: ~216 meters / ~709 feet (to roof) / ~60 storeys
Area: 60.000 sqm
Scheduled construction start: summer 2008
Scheduled completion: winter 2010-2011
Developer: Annehem AB - http://www.annehem.se/
Architect: CF Möller (Denmark) - http://www.cfmoller.dk/

That's great for Malmö! Far from the quality of the Turning Torso though, but I guess that's what you get for chosing Danish architects. But wow, I'm so jealous of you, Malmö (and I never thought I'd say that  )

Good height, but i dont like the design so much. Maybe Swedish members can tell me.. why is Malmö home to those landmarks, and not Stockholm (for example)? Is an important place there?

It's a very high tower for a city as big as Malmö, it gives hope for other European cities to build high and high quality towers like this city. :)

The design isn't too spectacular, but that's because the only competition in town is the brilliant Turning Torso.

It's Sweden's third largest city (and part of the Själland-Skåne Megalopolis :P), so it's not in the middle of nowhere. But the reason is simply more pro-skyscraper politicians and fewer nimbys. Build anything over 6 storeys in Stockholm and some people freak out, very very tiresome attitude.

Ekumenopolis,
Malmö simply is an extremely progressive city and by far the most booming city in Scandinavia right now. These towers are developed by local companies, so there has never been any question if they would be placed in Stockholm (or Copenhagen for that matter) or any other city.
It's like saying "why aren't these buildings built in Berlin instead?". :)

Many people were afraid that Malmö was going to be put even more in the shadow of Copenhagen when the bridge was finished in 2000, but the effect has been totally the opposite. Also, Malmö isn't really a small city with 0,6 million people in Greater Malmö, and the city together with Copenhagen forms the center of the Öresund Metropolitan Area with some 3,6 million inhabitants.
Malmö has gone from being a tired industrial city without any hopes for the future, in the 1980s, to the most progressive and booming city in northern Europe today.
The completion of the Turning Torso in 2005 was the icing on the cake, so to speak.

Masridog,
A quick use of the ruler in Google Earth indicates that the distance between the two towers is around 6 km. :)

Sbz2ifc,
The UFO is actually an old watertower called Hyllie Vattentorn. It's around 60 meters tall and looks like this:

I agree. Although, this is a great way to mark the entrance to Hylle (as a new area), Malmö as a city, and Sweden as a country.

sjon,
To my knowledge, there isn't a taller residential building in Europe (outside Russia) than the Turning Torso (yes, also in Malmö :)), at 190 meters.

This will make it the tallest building in Scandinavia and Northern Europe - as well as the tallest residential building in Europe (not counting Russia).

It wont be tallest in Europe, since by the time it's constructed, another residential located in Wroclaw, called Sky Tower (220 meters till roof), will be already erected.

Alright, I wasn't aware of the Wroclaw project. Too bad there isn't a search feature at SSP where you can filter the searches with building use.

Anyway, I guess we'd have to change it to the "tallest residential in western Europe".

Chilenofuturista,
Well, I'm not familiar with the word "semiotics". What I meant is that the Malmö Tower really will mark the entrance of the city of Malmö, as well as Sweden (it's pretty much the first thing you'll see when you enter Sweden from the Öresund Bridge) - and not only a landmark and entrance point of Hyllie as an area. :)

For your information I didn't write anything bad about its location or its implications for Hyllie, Malmö and Sweden as a whole. :)

Semiotics

1. The study of signs and symbols as elements of communicative behavior; the analysis of systems of communication, as language, gestures, or clothing.
2. A general theory of signs and symbolism, usually divided into the branches of pragmatics, semantics, and syntactics.

Cheers.

Nice design, but since it's a very heigh tower in a lowrise area close to big open water, there will be problems with wind at ground level I guess... We have the same problem in Rotterdam, further from sea.

Great!

The pepole of Malmö has something new to look forward to. The new tower is not as special as Turning torso but it will complemet it good. It´s a shame that there are located so far from eachother. It´s about 6 - 7 km, but it will look nice from a distance.

This will be the eyecatcher for the new Hyllievång area. And another finger to the pepole on the other side of the bridge.

I hope that the danish architechts will soon be able to give the skyline of Copenhagen a new Building. I think they deserve it.

This area is the future of scandinavia and we´re already seeing the benefits.

Give it up for Malmö skyline, closing in to be the best in northern Europe!

Approximately 615 000 inhabitants. We then count Malmö and its surrounding suburbs and towns that are located in Sweden.

The whole Metropolitan Öresund Region (Northern Zeeland + Scania) has more than 3 million inhabitants.

What's the point of building such tall towers in small towns like Malmö? In my mind skyscrapers belong in clusters in big, populous cities. One (or now 2) tall towers in a small town like this will only look strange. How great or beautiful a city is isn't measured by how tall the tallest buildings are. Are Malmö having a small-town-complex after the construction of the Öresund bridge?:)

:bash: that's my humble opinion.

I congratulate Malmo for having the balls (as one of the few European cities) to support highrise living, but why can't they all build them in one cluster. It would look so much better.

Have you heard of supply and demand? I mean it wouldnt get buildt if there wasnt any demand, just look at TT it was doomed by the press even before planning stage because of Malmoe being a small city but there was a demand hence it got built. Now all apartments have tenants if im not wrong.

A building like this is very profitable for those who owns the property and the building, you can sell many more appartments in a 216m tall building than in a building that have a height in proportion to the surrounding buildings. If there is a demand it doesn't necessarily mean that it should be built.

:nono: Sweden not. Let's not generalise. Malmö YES, but Sweden as a country definitely not. Sweden must be the craddle of NIMBY and "go nature" mentality.
I'm glad for Malmö, I foresee a grand future for this quite "unscandinavian" city with its cocky attitude (which I like). Malmö is quite big in Scandinavian standards, At least 615 000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area and it takes a while from entering the city's border by train until you reach its central station, so little it isn't.
