Looks like a future cause for congestion. I hope the roads will be able to carry the traffic generated by the school and that there's sufficient circulation for this. Should've learned from the experiences of Ateneo De Manila and Ateneo De Davao.

It has happened before...:colgate: But its a good thing that major urban areas outside the Metro are perking up. I just hope that the next national government would be supportive with distributing developments nationwide.

I have the same hope as yours... :okay:

medyo malayo na naabot ng Cebu...:)
and grabe talaga mga projects doon...
wow...

but we are happy sa mga developments sa Iloilo...
contented naman ako...:)

Ang gulong nang palad... :)

Iloilo before, Cebu now and who knows, at the time of my son's generation, it will be Tagbilaran City's turn to be the "lead".. ;)

Anyway and as usual, glad to see major urban centers growing in unison...

Wherever there's an Ateneo, there's traffic. :nocrook: Kidding! :D
Yeah. Its one thing that I'm concerned, considering that the other end of the Donato Pison Avenue (the road that traverses Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS) is a bottleneck. From four lanes, it turns into two.

The developments of the nearby Riverside Boardwalk/Smallville area is somehow bothering me with regard of the traffic management situation. Roads there are not as wide as those in the major avenues, and Ayala Technohub is expected to add to the congestion.

Currently, no public utility vehicles are serving Donato Pison Avenue/KAPIDECO area.

SMC acquires majority stake in MRT-7 project
By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes (The Philippine Star) Updated April 06, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Diversifying conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the controlling owner of Metro Rail Transit Phase 7 (MRT-7) for the acquisition by SMC of a majority stake in the railway project.

SMC president Ramon Ang told The STAR that they have entered into an agreement with businessman Salvador “Buddy” Zamora III, who owns 63 percent of Universal LRT Corp. (ULC), which in turn wholly owns the MRT-7 project. The agreement provides that Zamora will sell his majority interest in ULC to SMC.

Zamora acquired majority control of the ULC consortium in 2008 from its original proponent, Israeli businessman Eli Levin.

Ang said they are also exploring the possibility of investing in a light rail transit project in Cebu, as well as other projects in Cagayan de Oro, Davao, and Iloilo.

The STAR earlier reported that SMC is interested in building a bullet train that will run the Laoag-Manila-Bicol route. Ang said they have commissioned a group that includes international companies with experience in bullet trains to conduct a study on this.

Asked how much the 63 percent stake in ULC costs and when the actual sale will be made, Ang said SMC is still undertaking due diligence work.

MRT 7 is a build-“gradual transfer”-operate, maintain and manage project for the development, financing, operation and maintenance of a 22-kilometer light rail transit route that extends from the MRT Line 3’s North Edsa terminal to San Jose del Monte in Bulacan.

ULC said it has tapped Morgan Stanley as its financial advisor to raise equity and debt needed to finance the construction of the $1.3-billion project.

ULC vice-chairman Roberto de Ocampo said that while it is true that Morgan Stanley has approached SMC to be part of the project, there are other interested parties that are also in talks with the financial advisor.

In response, a source from SMC said Zamora may just have failed to inform de Ocampo that an agreement has already been reached between SMC and Zamora.

Earlier, SMC said it has been offered to a majority interest in MRT-7 and that the company is negotiating with the members of the consortium of the project. There were reports that SMC was already in the “advanced stages of negotiation” to take control of ULC, the consortium tasked to build the MRT 7 project.

Aside from Zamora, one other stakeholder in ULC is the SM Group of Companies, which plans to put up a mall in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan that will have an access to the MRT-7 line.

SMC has been expanding from its core food and beverage business and into heavy industries such as power, infrastructure and telecommunications to fuel faster future growth.

The MRT-7 project involves the construction of a 22-km light rail transit system carrying at least half a million passengers a day.

The project also includes an intermodal transport terminal—a transportation hub for buses and other forms of public conveyances—in San Jose del Monte, as well as a 22-km, six-lane feeder highway from the northern end of the line to Bocaue, Bulacan. This highway will link the intermodal terminal to the North Luzon Expressway.

As envisioned by the proponents, the rail component of MRT 7 project will initially operate 108 rail cars in a three-car train configuration. Initial capacity is projected at 448,000 passengers a day, but will eventually be expanded to accommodate as many as 850,000 passengers daily.

The rail line will have 14 stations, namely: North Edsa, Quezon Memorial Circle, University Ave., Tandang Sora, Don Antonio, Batasan, Manggahan, Doña Carmen, Regalado, Mindanao Ave., Quirino, Sacred Heart, Tala and Araneta San Jose Del Monte.

The intermodal terminal, on the other hand, will be able to accommodate 60 buses and will also feature passenger facilities and amenities.

Study Indicates Metro Iloilo Need for P2.6 B Worth of Road Projects

By TARA YAP
September 19, 2010, 6:01pm

ILOILO CITY – The city of Iloilo and neighboring towns require at least P2.6-billion worth of road infrastructure for these towns to be poised solidly for economic progress. This was disclosed by the Research Education and Institutional Development (REID) Foundation as among the findings on its study of priority infrastructure projects for Iloilo City.

Lea Lara of the Iloilo Business Club (IBC) pointed out that the study identified vital road infrastructure within Iloilo City and neighboring towns including Leganes, Pavia, Sta. Barabra, San Miguel, and Oton.

Lara emphasized that these findings will be used by the IBC in assisting Rep. Jerry Treñas (Lone District, Iloilo City) to identify necessary road projects that can yield strong economic impact for the city and its residents.

Among the identified roads is the R1.9-billion Circumferential Alternative Road (CAR), which was originally supported by the Regional Development Council (RDC 6). The 14-kilometer CAR, which starts with the Iloilo-Antique road and ending along the coastal road of Iloilo, envisions the construction of five bridges and is intended to gain easier access to both the new Iloilo Airport and Iloilo Port.

Also included are the 3.1-kilometer Jaro-Leganes road and the 3.53-kilometer Radial 4-Bypass 2 road that starts at MacArthur Drive and ends at Calle Progesso in Leganes town. Both proposed roads are designed to decongest traffic in the city and generate more development in Metro Iloilo.

The fourth proposed road is the 0.89-kilometer Jalandoni Bridge- Diversion Road which will be coupled with the construction of the Dungon Bridge.

Lara said these road networks are needed to facilitate and sustain economic growth, supporting the backbone that will develop Iloilo into a premier city by 2015.

It was given itself from the national government through Gloria's "Tulay ng Pangulo" programme. Unfortunately for Iloilo, traffic signalization is something it clearly lacks.

It was given itself from the national government through Gloria's "Tulay ng Pangulo" programme. Unfortunately for Iloilo, traffic signalization is something it clearly lacks.

^^
Traffic lights badly needed!

Bernie, did you try to open up this issue with Mayor JPM?

i agree, trafic rationalization, scheme and lights are a pressing problem in the city. This is more pronouced in tabuc suba, where traffic is horendous everyday!. From Leganes to Jaro Plaza a relatively short travel takes hours. :ohno:

MIGEDC had a couple of seminars/workshops last year where the participating municipalities identified the need for traffic signals in certain intersections. A friend from Sta. Barbara mentioned that they did try to identify possible sustainable transport projects for each of the LGUs. For Iloilo, the participants identified cycling and traffic management. Maybe the city should look into pedestrianization, too.

they have to enforce the no jay walking rule first, those overpasses are not used at all by the pedestrians, if the enforcers disappear, jay walking becomes free for all.. hay! :ohno:

Yup. I agree with you. The narrow streets in Iloilo sort of encourages jaywalking since it appears to people that they can easily cross the street. Come to think of it, even along the wider avenues there are a lot of jaywalkers. Convenience perhaps? But the city should exert more effort against this. They are accidents waiting to happen.

In my opinion, the downtown area shouldn't have those pedestrian overpasses. The roads are narrow and the traffic is usually made not by the pedestrians themselves but the jeepneys loading and unloading (and waiting) for passengers.

Heck, we even need a decent traffic light that is operational in the city.

The one in SM Delgado/marymart is important IMHO, even the streets are narrow the vehicular volume is hign on all directions as well as the pedestrian traffic. These days though, no jaywalkin is strictly enforced there. Sa dalayun lang ma anad lang ina ang mga tawo mag gamit, as long as mapilitan sila and the is continued enforcement of the no jaywalking rule.

Iloilo hosts state-of-the-art power plant (http://www.philstar.com/business/2013/01/20/898874/iloilo-hosts-state-art-power-plant)
By Iris C. Gonzales (The Philippine Star) | Updated January 20, 2013 - 12:00am

http://imageshack.us/a/img5/9109/bus5i.jpg

MANILA, Philippines - A local consortium has launched its first state-of-the-art power plant in Iloilo last week and expects commercial dispatch in the last quarter of 2015.

It also tapped Canadian-American company SNC-Lavalin as the project’s engineer and manager.

The coal power plant triumvirate is composed of AC Energy Holdings Corp. (Ayala Corp.), Palm Thermal Consolidated Holdings Corp. (A. Brown Co. Inc.) and Jin Navitas Resources Inc. (Rebisco Group).

The plant was formally launched in groundbreaking rites at the 30-hectare project site in Brgy. Nipa, Concepcion, Iloilo.

Officials said the power plant’s capacity is good for two135-megawatt units and the target commercial dispatch for the first unit of 135 MW is set on the last quarter of 2015.

The president of Palm Concepcion Power Corp. (PCPC), the corporate vehicle for the power plant, said the plant will use the latest technology.
Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

“The power plant will use the circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) technology which is one of the most advanced and most fuel-efficient plant in the Visayas. It will use the latest Alstom Technology (Europe) for its steam turbine and generator,” PCPC president and CEO Roel Castro said.

The consortium has tapped NLSC - the consortium of First Northeast Electric Power Engineering Corp. of China (NEPC), Liaoning Electric Power Survey & Design Institute and Shenyang Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. – as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

Walter Brown, chairman of PCPC said the entry of the Concepcion plant is timely since the Department of Energy has identified 2015 to 2016 as a critical period wherein additional capacities will be needed in the Visayas.

The project has received full support from local business leaders and local officials as these sectors recognize that the new power plant will provide security and reliability of power supply to sustain the growth of the province.

from Iloilo Main Thread::)

From Paulo Alcazaren's Phil Star article for City Sense today, March 2013:

Esplanade, Iloilo Style (https://www.facebook.com/paulo.alcazaren?fref=ts)

I love the city of Iloilo. The people are warm and accommodating and the place is chock full of heritage architecture, parks and plazas. I’ve had the good fortune to visit often in the last year and a half to enjoy Ilonggo hospitality in the course of assisting the local government in designing and implementing urban improvements, specifically the new Iloilo Esplanade.

The esplanade, opened last year by President Aquino, was the brainchild of Senator Franklin Drilon. He had wanted to compliment previous improvements of the last few decades, many of whom he directly supported. Flood control measures, the new airport, bridges were built in conjunction with initiatives of past Mayor Jerry Trenas (now congressman) and current Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

Senator Drilon wanted a riverside esplanade of the quality of Singapore’s famous quays. The Iloilo River is one of the cleanest in the country, thanks to measures taken by the Senator, Mayor and Congressman. It actually was the showcase of the First Philippine International River Summit last June, which was attended by hundreds of officials, scientists and stakeholders from neighboring provinces and from overseas.

Since the opening with guests Senator Loren Legarda together and Saranggani Congressman Manny Pacquiao the Esplanade has become one of the most popular spiots in the city. Thousands come everyday—early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Morning and evening joggers fill the 10-15-meter wide and 1.2 kilometer-long Esplanade.

The Esplanade was designed as a linear park. Palms, colourful shrubs and shade trees (which will mature in the next few years) were planted to provide a green ribbon connecting Carpenter Bridge with the Diversion Bridge. Ilonggos peppered their FB pages with pictures of the Esplanade and the activites there within days of its opening.

Generous lighting makes the Esplanade attractive for evening and night use. The nearby Smallville district of new hotels and restaurants, have benefited and compliment the Esplanade.

The Esplanade is also designed to protect the prolific mangrove edges of the Iloilo River. Viewing decks are provided at strategic spots from which to view these and the panorama of the city. Accommodations have been made also for future kiosks and other amenities. Regular police foot patrols ensure security for Esplanade users.

Since the Esplanade opened, the adjacent properties have perked up both in value and actual development. Restaurants and commercial establishments have embarked on improvements or new projects that are now linked to the Esplanade. Hotels are being planned and a few are already under construction within a stone’s throw of the Esplanade.

The Esplanade has been so successful that Senator Drilon has spearheaded the drive to extend the amenity on the other side first, then subsequently all along the river. Mayor Mabilog and Congressman Trenas are supporting this plus another project—the improvement of Benigno Aquino Avenue that will link the Esplanade another two kilometres inland to the existing SM Iloilo.

This new avenue will be designed as the city’s Champs Elysee. Five rows of lovely shade trees will line the long drive and provide a comfortable and green pedestrian-friendly linear parkway. Bike lanes, disabled access and other amenities will be provided. Ramps and pedestrian bridges will connect the parkway to the Esplanade, Smallville and the SM and other commercial complexes. A police station will ensure security coupled with CCTVs.

The Benigno S. Aquino Avenue improvement project saw its groundbreaking last month. The Senator, Mayor and Congressman led the ceremonies including the sinking of a time capsule and unveiling of persepctives of the proposed new avenue improvements.

Metro Manila can learn a lot from Iloilo. Its river is cleaner than the Pasig. Its heritage buildings are being conserved and its historic district retains the charm of eras past without compromising progress. Its churches are intact and its parks and plazas are getting makeovers to bring them back to their old glory.

Iloilo now has the longest landscaped river Esplanade in the country. It will soon have a main avenue that will rival Roxas Boulevard and Ayala Avenue here in Metro Manila. For all this it deserves its name, the “Queen City of the South.” It does so will citizens’ backing and the political will of its leaders, all of who understand that conserving a city and providing open green amenities, go hand in hand with progress in buildings and infrastructure.Visit Iloilo soon. You’ll love the Illongos and their warm, comfortable, character-filled city.

Feedback is welcome. Please email the writer at paulo.alcazaren@gmail.com.

For the record, this is not a radial road. This is a bypass road. This road has the project name R4 Bypass Road, which means that it was built to bypass and complement a section of the Radial Road 4 (R4), aka Iloilo-Capiz Road, at the Zarraga-Leganes area.

We can also consider it as a diversion road, much like the Jaro-Iloilo West Diversion Road (now known as BS Aquino Ave.), which was designed to divert some traffic from the Jaro-Lapaz-Iloilo City route.

Maybe someday they can officially name the R4 Bypass Road for a politician or a hero or any dead man.

^^ Hope the remaining sections - Sections A and B - will be constructed soon, too. And that "half a bridge" shown in the picture, completed. With these sections (C to E) of C1 completed, we no longer have to endure CPU traffic just to get to USA-Sambag. :cheers2:
