There are lots of gaudy things in LV, but that isn't one of them. Just came back from the Cosmopolitan. I beg to differ, the much hype chandelier is just too much. I love the Cosmopolitan and the $3.9 billion price tag definitely shows it but the chandelier is just not for me. Great bars and lounge, the casino floor is awesome, the front desk and lobby is definitely WORLD CLASS!! Very interesting resort and will definitely add to the experience when visiting Vegas. Aria, Cosmopolitan and the City Center are the must sees in Vegas. Vegas is truly the Entertainment Capital of the World. rough December 23rd, 2010, 05:24 AM Cool! When did it open? I was there last month still closed. Even the public bridgeway was shut off to the pedestrians had to walk all the way around. It opened Dec. 15 fishordie December 24th, 2010, 07:54 AM Sorry all but I just came back from Cosmo and I am very, very disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were a bit too much and there was the issue of a very soft opening but foozball next to food table, Pool Table with games on the floor all of which were being played by kids?? I was wearing nice jeans and my lady looked nice but most folks were in sweats or the like. No signs of elegance meets sin or just the right amount of wrong as most everything was wrong with the place as there was just no flow. A very good indication of what I felt was expressed in the Lack of Smiles on the faces of the customers or the dealers. However, the majority of regular staff were very open and helpful but perhaps due to their youth did net feel as professional as other major hotels. I almost expected to see some of the staff wearing tennis shoes under their shirts and slacks or suits. I did like the chandelier bar though was not blown away and I really liked the Lobby but the rest was something closer to a sports bar meets a mall. The so called electronic art was just TV monitors with second or third rate art which changed way too slowly. I have collected art for over 30 years and no one can convince me I can appreciate real art through a TV monitor as you cannot "Feel" the art unless seen in person. Seeing the Masters or any other artists work on T.V. cannot compare to seeing the real thing nor can it be described. Nothing compares to the real thing, good art or bad art. Perhaps they have not got that part worked out as when we were there the art was the same from monitor to monitor. The art on the walls was at best second rate and in most cases were something you might find at an Ikea as it was very commercial in its look. Perhaps I just will never forget that magnificent Picasso at Wynn's place though I will never stay there again either. Shoe sculptures by the convention areas rather capped it off for me as that is as cheesy as a bunch of canoes welded together. Forget up and coming artists this stuff was just not good. I really felt the small foot print would make things more intimate but Cosmo really screwed that up. Hall ways were narrow when they should be wide and wide when they should have been tighter. The carpeting in the halls is bland and rather cheap looking. To me halls, especially those that lead to living areas, should be either fun and exciting or warm and inviting. Unfortunately the Cosmo made the mistake so many others make and fail to take this into consideration The retail definitely is very mall like with nothing "Vegas" about it. The original designs for the floors from the Condo brochures showed elegant white marble floors with an inlaid pattern. The original design was elegantly beautiful but what was created was more of a poured in place flooring using dead materials and dead colors. Where they finally used some light natural stone it was unmatched marble or granite tile with no inlay. Second rate at best with no "Feel" to it. The place looks like it was designed by multiple designers who forgot to coordinate with each other. Another easy fix at Cosmo would be a bit more informational signage as to how to get to each major spot. Too many times we were searching around to find out how to get anywhere even though this really is a very small footprint. Unwin stated he wanted folks to be on a constant discovery process as they view the hotel but again please refer to my opinion of Artsy Fartsy. Sorry, but for most of us this is just not a good or welcoming idea. If I want to eat pizza I just do not want to have to ask 10 hotel staff where it is or for that matter where the heck am I going. The Restaurant level is really a glorified mall food court with some medium and high end eateries. STK looks like a winner and possibly the Tapas place but the others may have some issues. However, I am not sure these will be worth the price of admission but that remains to be seen. Vegas has so many great eateries so Cosmo needs to figure out how to make the place better. In all of our opinions it appeared as if Deutche took over the project with a ton of monies but the cost overruns seemed to keep the final product from coming to fruition. It really seemed as if Deutche said finish it as nice as possible but on a smaller budget than the place warranted as the bulk of their monies paid for the stuff we do not see such as increases in material costs, creating the underground and underwater parking, etc. The Ceilings showed a lot of detail with great lighting but in my opinion no one has done it better or earlier than Red Rock so this is nothing new. I kept thinking this place is going to get better but it really never did. I had super high expectations but I went away sadly disappointed. As much as I do not like what Steve Wynn stands for or his demeanor he was correct when he said he had nothing to worry about regarding the Cosmo. The Wynn customer will not be drawn to the Cosmo at least the majority. I believe the same will apply to the Trump, Bellagio, Palazzo, etc. customers as so far the "Vibe" in the place is nothing like the advertising. Again, this was a very soft opening and not everything was open but I do not see a whole lot more excitement to keep customers coming back. Oh well, as in most things my opinion is purely subjective and others may feel differently but I am a Vegas regular who was sadly disappointed with the latest and possibly last Vegas mega resort for the next many years. In my opinion Deutche really blew it and Unwin was not the man for the job. Perhaps Eichner and his wife were better designers than the folks assigned to this mess as the early brochures really showed a much more sophisticated and elegant product than what was produced. (No comment on the original robots or ?? the Eichner's had thought of as I just did not get that) There is a reason there are so few "SOHO" type places in the world and that is because most of us are just not into that scene and fewer yet want to live amongst it. I do not subscribe to what other folks have to tell you is elegance or art when in fact it could have been made by a 5 year old. Artsy fartsy in my opinion is just some folks trying to tell me their mistakes are actually earth shattering, mind changing discoveries or creations. Sorry, but this patron is just not buying into it. On a good note, the rooms are as nice as most anything in Vegas due to the luxury of the step out balconies with the North side having spectacular views especially of the fountains of Bellagio but not enough to bring me back to stay. The decor did not make me say wow however I did like the soaking tub with a great view and very pretty shower which I believe was the same design from the Eicher's. Other than the view other hotels offer more wow in their rooms for less money. The casino dealers, who I thought were supposed to smile and bring a sense of customer service wore the same sad faces of many of the other resorts as there just were not that many customers playing. Many, many empty tables or only 1 or 2 customers. So many empty tables with dealers just staring off into space. Not what I expected within the first 10 days of the opening. Since I am not much of a gambler I cannot state if this place had a "Gambler's Feel" to it but from what little I saw and know in this regard it was not there even with all the pretty slots and miscellaneous machines and games. I can say for the Cosmo to even break even they may have to set the odds up pretty high on those slots. Did I mention I did not see a single person playing with their own monies in the high stakes room?? I did like the lighting of the angled glass area on L.V. Boulevard however I am not happy with the lighting of the rest of the building as it was somewhat dead. Worse yet is the color of the exterior during the day which as I have noted before looks like something out of Gotham City and Batman. Dark and drab, nothing like the aqua blue structure shown in the original sales brochures. Self parking will be a nightmare as the turns to each level are too narrow to allow two large vehicles to pass in different directions at the same time. Of course there is no grand entrance as the parking entrance is a hole in the wall off Harmon. A big worry is on the self park 3rd floor down underground parking we noticed some water weeping through some seams of the retaining walls. Knowing the underground structure is literally surrounded by a lake (Aquafir) this is really scary. I am hoping the water was merely from some overhead leak from the rains but it did not look that way at all. One other problem with the parking which may be able to be fixed were some days the hotel was waayyy less than full yet the parking was tough. I believe folks not affiliated with the hotel are using it for free strip parking due to its close proximity to the strip. Not sure how they will handle the self parking in the future but since there is already a very limited amount of parking due to Cosmo having to get a variance for not having enough parking spaces per Building department requirements this could become a real issue to those staying at the hotel. When this place is anywhere near capacity or possibly even half capacity parking will probably be by Valet only and even then I am not sure where the valets will park the vehicles. Since each level shows how many spaces are open it is easy to see how this will become a major issue in the future. Another issue needing to be addressed in the self parking structure is the lack of signals at the pedestrian crossing areas. Entering and exiting from Harmon finds a cross walk a few hundred feet after the turn. This crossing has almost non stop pedestrian crossing and cars must stop as folks cross. Since there is no control of this cars back up in both directions even with the least amount of visitors. This situation is compounded dramatically as cars attempt to leave via the connection to the driveway shared with the Jockey Club. The strip pedestrians again have no signal across this driveway thus only one or two cars may exit every so often. The back up covers several floors again even on a low volume visitor day. Both driveways, entrances and exits need to be re thought for the self parking visitors. In Short, the advertising does not reveal itself in the end product. I will not be staying at this resort in the future unless something drastically changes for the better which I hope comes about as again I had very high expectations for this place. Just the right amount of wrong... Naw there is way too much wrong. FOD |
