Yes, finally Germany gets some more apartment highrises which are not social housing. Seems mentality slowly changes. Such thing would have been unthinkable 15 years ago.

the concert hall looks always more impressive !!
Marco polo tower is very nice but expensive to live there , hosting some of the most expensive condos in Hamburg .
Three miles further west is another condo tower ( "Kristall") u/c at the waterfront in the Altona area

The Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) includes 2 concert halls, a 5-star-hotel and appartments on top of an old warehouse from 1961 (Kaispeicher A). The construction has already begun, at the moment the warehouse is cored.
completion: 2010 / architects: Herzog & de Meuron / cost: 322 million €

The opening is sheduled for may 2012.

323,2 million € is just what the city of Hamburg pays.
Donations of 57,5 million € are not included.
Actually the concert hall and the apartments cost 379,9 million €.

The costs of the commercial parts of the building such as the 5 star hotel are not included and unknown. At first it had to cost 241,3 million €, but the costs increased and are unknown today. The investors didn't make them public.

So the overall costs of this building are beyond 600 million €.

This is a link to a collection of HD marketing videos about the city of Hamburg, parts of the Hafencity, inner city, the new Hamburg Philharmonic Hall, the river & harbour area, architecture, and more in clips of 2-10 mins.
Some older stuff is mixed under as well as two 2010 clips about the philharmonic hall and future development of the eastern part of Hafencity (Only in german). The Elbphilharmonie can be seen in several clips.

37 vids total, several of them interviews..

The videos have mostly been shot in 2009 and some are older, so they are not up to date considering the Hafencity area or the concert hall, but they integrate renderings of the new Hafencity buildings in the vids.

Best thing is: Hamburg looks just beautiful in Summer :)

much more transparent and not that glazed!

IMO there is no such thing as transparent glass, at least when you're looking in from the outside. ;) Without any glazing the glass would have just appeared dull and dark.

pescarush
July 22nd, 2010, 12:54 PM
yeah, i know, i know...
but i said much more transparent, not entirely, maybe those spots, dunno.
and the glazing isn t exactly necessary for not becoming dull and dark, there are those kind of more matte glasses also. this way maybe it wouldn t appeared that blue, reflecting the sky.
i m saying it cause i m thinking of those renders and it apeared whiter and smoother and i thought it won t be a problem for doing it in reality like in the renders.

steve1young
July 24th, 2010, 12:30 AM
Oh, give me a break. Of course the glazing appears lighter in the renderings then the pics. They're reflecting the clouds in the sky. Duh! Did you notice that the renderings are of a lighter color semi-cloudy sky and the pics are of a deep blue cloudless sky? Why not wait until we see pics on a semi-cloudy day or try using your imagination.

If you feel the need to be an annoying complainer, at least have a solid basis for your whining.

It s incredible how H&M get the contrast with materials, the hard, heavy on the bottom, and light on top... It s gonna be a symbol, as big as the sydney opera!

Are those black edges of the windows going to stay?
In the renderings they were white and less prominent.

The black edges emphasize the grid structure of the facade. That makes it look much more conventional than the "white sail" of the renderings IMHO.

I haven't seen it in nature though, just judging by the pictures.

One of the greatest yet least talked about project in Europe at the moment.
As soon as it's anything phallus-like and 300 meters tall you get dozens of pages of "AWESOME!", but here... very little attention.

I will take my son to his first opera in Paris (Opera Garnier); the second will be Hamburg. ;)

What do you expect from many people here if their little grey cells are programmed like brains of ordinary soccer fans?

Well, I actualy dont like it. Its quite ugly. A giant block in a area with only smaller builings that looks for me nothing like a philharmonic building.

Yet an impressive addition to Hamburgs architecture. Impressive only due to its massiveness though.

Appearance depends only on the perspective.
Most pics here were taken from the ferry line 62 (+tele), and only very few from #73 or from the stop Sandtorhöft.

Is there a rule how a philharmonic/opera building must look?
If Milano or Paris should be standards, the Sydney Opera House must be poor

Architecture is nothing for blind and/or biased people.

Hamburg is more and more becoming Germanys most beautiful city. Good planning there!

Hamburg has always been Germanies most beautiful city. Some say Munich but they are wrong.

What exactly looks Disney World-ish about it? IMO it's the exact opposite. Disney World looks cheap, tacky and unoriginal. The Elbphilharmonie looks sleek, modern, unique and relatively expensive even though it's probably not everyone's cup of tea.

I think it's funny that some people in this thread says it doesn't look like a philharmonic hall, since it's basically just a copy of the Berlin Philharmonic placed on an old warehouse building(if you want to be harsh).

Its certainly an homage to Schroun's Philharmonic Hall, but I wouldn't go so far as copy. The scale, material, overall form and actual halls are somewhat different.

erbse
July 28th, 2011, 04:17 PM
Well, the HafenCity is extending further towards "Chicago Square". Constructions are about to start. Even some further highrises (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1288863) may join the party. Initially, the Lighthouse Tower by Teherani (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=32731826#post32731826) was also proposed for this area.

It's all not that certain yet. But a lot is gonna happen before you can call the whole HafenCity "finished", that's for sure.

And of course this forum features a thread for it

Most of us were disappointed with the new Walker Art Center they did here in Minneapolis (not that its necessarily bad but way below their standards), and I have never been a fan of St Jakob park in Basel. But this is strongly in the running for coolest building in the world and looks like it will be a pretty phenomenal hall in there.
