The Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) includes 2 concert halls, a 5-star-hotel and appartments on top of an old warehouse from 1961 (Kaispeicher A). The construction has already begun, at the moment the warehouse is cored.
completion: 2010 / architects: Herzog & de Meuron / cost: 322 million €

In the guise of the Elbe Philharmonic Hall, Hamburg is acquiring a new and impressive concert house, one that seems destined to house one of the world's ten best concert halls. This should be an outstanding location for performing classical music as well as jazz, world music and pop music. The Elbe Philharmonic Hall will become a new landmark for the city and, at the same time, a place for everyone. The new building complex will comprise two concert halls, an hotel with an international conference area, apartments, a plaza at a height of 37 meters, a wellness area, a nightclub and a large number of parking spaces in the Warehouse (quayside warehouse). The complex was based on designs by renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.

http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/6830/westansichtnacht7uv.jpg

The new building is a resplendent glass body, whose surface is formed differently in certain sections. The single-shell glass facade thus shows the three internal uses of the building. In the hotel, the air vents become wave-like hatches, while the balconies of the apartments, horseshoe-shaped recesses in the glass, guarantee spectacular views, protection from the wind and lateral ventilation of the connecting rooms all at once. The concert auditorium, which faces inwards, shimmers with its amber-coloured foyer through the glass wall. A grid of white dots will also be printed on the facade to provide protection from the sun. The density of the grid will be individually calculated, with the aid of a computer, so that each room has appropriate protection depending on its function.
http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/3035/nordostansicht7ki.jpg

The Elbe Philharmonic Hall aims to be one of the best concert auditoriums in the world. It will be an outstanding venue for classical music, as well as jazz, world music and Pop. The large concert auditorium, with approx. 2,150 seats, will take pride of place in the Elbe Philharmonic Hall. It does not follow the orthogonal concept of a so-called shoebox stage. The orchestra and conductor are situated in the centre and the audience seating sections rise up in interlocking irregular terraces to form a steep-sided cauldron. Light is reflected from the bright surfaces. The reflector in the sharply pointed ceiling is a striking feature. It ensures outstanding acoustics and is also part of the lighting system.
http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/5820/saal0qz.jpg

In addition to the three concert halls, the Plaza also forms the heart of the Elbe Philharmonic Hall. It will resemble a market place where concert-goers and casual passers-by, residents of Hamburg and tourists can meet. The outdoor terraces offer a unique panorama with views of the city centre to the North, HafenCity to the East, and the Elbe and the harbour to the South and West. There is hardly anywhere else in Hamburg where the relationship between the city and the harbour can be seen in such an impressive way. The interior of the Plaza is dominated by the curved ceiling with its varying geometrical shape. It affords spectacular views of the city and the harbour. Deep recesses are cut into the building above the Plaza, offering varied views between the Plaza and the different levels of the foyer. On the Plaza itself, there are a number of restaurants and bars, and also the entrances to the hotel lobby and the residential complex. Sculptural staircases lead to the foyers of the Philharmonic Hall.
http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/2725/plaza3ef.jpg

Visitors can reach the foyer of the large concert auditorium by passing through the staircase sculpture below the auditorium. The foyer spreads out upwards to the facades and leads the visitor further and further into an unmistakable architectural landscape. A sweeping three-storey staircase leads up from the Plaza to the level of the small auditorium, which is a completely separate area with its own infrastructure.
http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/1433/foyer9ob.jpg

The Elbe Philharmonic Hall will be more than just a concert hall – it will form an entire residential and cultural complex. In the West, the residential section towers up to as high as 110 meters above the Elbe. The apartments offer impressive views out over the city and the port, and have a separate entrance. Plans foresee a hotel with conference facilities on the East side – in at least the 5-star category. The spectacular highpoint: a stroll in the wavy roof area. The hotel rooms offer a view out over HafenCity, the largest downtown urban development in Europe. The plaza is a freely accessible zone 37 meters above the ground. It is positioned like a radiant joint between Warehouse and the new building. The idea: to create a new meeting point for all Hamburg residents and the city’s visitors. The Warehouse itself will primarily be used as a carpark for some 570 vehicles. Next to it there will be high-end uses, an education area, additional backstage, wellness facilities and hospitality.

The Elbe Philharmonic Hall will occupy a historically important spot. Sandtor harbour, at the tip of which the Elbe Philharmonic will be built, is Hamburg’s first industrial dock. The landmark of the harbour, the “Kaiserspeicher” with its ball clock, stood there until it was destroyed in the Second World War. Every ship that entered Hamburg harbour headed towards it. Yet as much as the place is steeped in history, it remained unknown for many years. Ever since Speicherstadt and HafenCity were excluded from the free port, people have started rediscovering this prominent part of the city. In the West, the Elbe Philharmonic extends into the Elbe, as a hinge between the city and the harbour. The Elbe Philharmonic Hall also has a central function for HafenCity. With the “Internationales Maritimes Museum Hamburg” and cultural establishments planned for the Überseequartier, it will be the cultural heart of HafenCity and contribute to the further regeneration of this inner city urban development area, the largest in Europe.

erbse
July 4th, 2007, 06:18 PM
^ I think this architecture isn't ugly in any way. In fact it will be a great landmark for Hamburg, a lighthouse of modern architecure for this hanseatic city. Just look at the official homepage (http://www.elbphilharmonie.de/index.php?language=en) to realize its innovative style and especially the interesting interior. It may look strange to some people - but that what it makes unique, not ugly (sorry, but otherwise you haven't a great feel for modern architecture imo). ;)

the big room will have 2150 seats and the small one 500.

Anyway, somebody out there who can brag with some update shots? :)

frank hannover
March 14th, 2009, 04:06 PM
^^ They changed during the construction several things ,like deeper soils in water for a more ecological climatac , at the same time the prices for steal and glass grew into the sky, and they made some other improvements in the interior (more expensive ), so its not all wrong calculation. The last complete price I heard about was even about 500 million Euro. In addition to all the trouble it will open one or two years later than original planned, now 2012.
Nothing uncommon for unusual buildings like this.

Does anybody have an update?

Hi Frank,

You as German you would say "jein" (or should I write "jain"?), but better don't ask me after too many details, please :)
I'm a tourist not a photographer, but my friend who shot these philharmonic hall pictures (I persuaded him to show, resp. chose them only) is shooting hundreds photos of the Hafencity for documentary purposes every week, indeed. The trouble is, he doesn't like the Hafencity very much, and I can feel pretty good why he doesn't want to give the photos away. Not only he, cause during my 3 visits to Hamburg, since June last year, we met other local people here, and nobody said he/she would like his/her "own" Hafencity.
Strange?
You know, Hamburg is such a fantastic city, and Hamburg's downtown is probably the most interesting and beautiful one in the World, including the old warehouse (Speicherstadt) and the kontorhaus (Chilehouse+) quarters of course, and the level here in Hamburg and Germany is very high already. But, in short, this and the new Hafencity - this is not the same level. Not nearly.
I don't know how detailed you know Hamburg, ever been here? If not, you may follow the red path unter (+)more->"hamburg for tourists" on the website I mentioned in #151 the next time you should go to Hamburg, or/and view the photos in the parts 2a,2b,3,4a,4b and compare them with real Hafencity photos (not computer graphics) you can find everywhere in other threads here or elsewhere. Sure, the new philharmony will be a great and fantastic Hamburg's new landmark, and EUROPEAN - don't get smoke in your eyes dear Aussie friends! Its surrounding water is amazing, maybe one or another building will be very nice too, but on the other hand, the entire area of Hamburg's new city extension is big, too big, hence the average quality will be not very high, rather low, comparing to the "old" Mo-Strasse/Alster/Jungfernstieg/Gaensemarkt/Potsstrasse/Colonnaden/Roedingsmarkt area.

In the downtown, at present, you can walk along the small Alster lake, channels and arcades, you can watch the water & swans, enter tens or even hundreds of shops, more than ten shop-passages, small and big restaurants, one after another, shop by shop, a really great feeling. Of course, the Hafencity isn't finished today, but the two already finished streets, I mean these two along the channel with the vintage boats at the pier, give me rather a sad than a good premonition, so my feelings about the future things here are more than mixed.
During a guided tour one month ago I made some notices, here only one example of it:
the shopping areas of Hamburg's downtown take a bit more than 320,000 sqm now, which is not really very much for a 2 million city, they said, and the new Hafencity should extend the current downtown by 33 per cent.
But if so, the Hafencity should need next 100,000 sqm for new shops, but there will be less than 45,000 sqm for shopping only.

Sorry for writing about the Hafencity here in your philharmonic hall thread, but I have to leave Hamburg for Canada tomorrow, hence very hurry at moment.

hoping you are not angry :)
love
Maja

The problem with the hafencity is, that many inhabitans of Hamburg can't understand, why they do the same mistakes in design again and again. Hamburg certainly has a beuatiful and fantastic downtown, but it is not the most beautifull in the world, just in Germany. See wat is next to the chilehaus. The four ugly grey highrises. See what is next to the michel. The ugly Highrise of Deutscher Ring. What do you see when you look from the deichtorcenter to st.nikolai? The ugly Spiegel Headquarter. And now the do it again. What did they build behind the Elphilhamonie? - The most ugliest buildings in the hafencity, yet - In the tradition of destroying the shape with boring box-bullshit. The maggelan-terassen are the most boring place I have ever seen in Hamburg and by hunting the skaters away they killed the rest of the life of this place. That's Hamburg, too
I love this city and it's downtown, but I don't close my eyes in case of this unlucky shortfalls.

Thank you maja . I know Hamburg from several visits ,its my fav city in GER , my two sisters live there....I think Hafencity is too new to value it..the problem is , its financed by investestors, everything will be felt as sterile by many and cleaned up, no real live they think ... but we will see in the future.
If you ask anybody in Berlin for the Potsdamer platz, at least 50 % will say they hate it (ugly new), if you ask someone ask in Cologne for this Media quarter , also many people will say its ugly, modern , sterile.

Hamburg has several cool ""seedy areas" like Ottensen(Altona), Schanze, Karo, Pauli, St Georg,so Iwill travel again there...:)

I don't think that's the point. Hafencity could be great as new suburb for Hamburg, as downtown extension not suitable, IMO.

Since www.elbphilharmonie.de has no english link anymore all english speaking people should use

http://elbphilharmonie-bau.de/index_html.php?language=en

or

http://elbphilharmonie-bau.de/index_flash.php?language=en

instead for new pictures of the construction site.
There is a nice moveable webcam on the page as well, this is the direct link:

http://62.206.10.222/local/viewer/cam_inner_en.html

and another webcam (with extra widescreen pics from 10am hamburg time) with the rising Elbphilharmonie in the background on the far right:

http://www.hafencity.com/webcam.php?language=en

What a grand development! I find the juxtaposition of the brick cladding with the glass to be extremely unique. What an interesting idea, to take a boring unused building indicative of 60's and 70's urban decay and use it as the starting point for something truly new and spectacular, all while maintaining a vital link to the past! This is something that other cities should make a note of.

Yes, how the times change ...

The new/old Kaispeicher-A storehouse has been handed over to the Hamburg Port Authority on 26th march 1966.

From "Hamburger Abendblatt":
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8986/19660325ha033.jpg
Facts from the article:
storehouse area: 6,000 m²
storehouse volume: 172,000 m³
concrete volume: 20,000 m³
brick walls surface: 3,000 m²
costs: 24,000,000 DM (=12,000,000 Euro) LESS THAN FORESEEN!

As a music lover that has attended several concerts in the beutiful Musikhalle / Laeiszhalle, I'm a little sad to see it go..BUT I really can't wait for this wonderful, groundbreaking new one!

Last time I was in Hamburg , 1 year ago, I went to see the workplace, and I was amazed by the sheer scale of it.

It's so great to see that Germany is still the country where they know that spending money on "real" culture is always worth it.

What do you mean? Laeiszhalle and Elbphilharmonie will be partner-halls under one director, both concert halls will be active over the whole year, so there is nothing lost at all..

I didn't mean that the Laeiszhalle is going to be closed or anything like that, just that it's going to become at least partly obsolete.
Without a doubt the focus of the musical life will shift from the Laeiszhalle to the ElbPhilharmonie: maybe over time, but it will happen.
Hamburg is not London , that has 5 A-list orchestras, or Berlin, that has 3.
The NDR SO and the Hamburger Phil don't generate enough business to keep open all the time two halls that big.
Plus the NDR SO has to divide itself between Hamburg, Bremen, Luebeck and Kiel.
Moreover, I'm pretty sure that all that visiting world-famoous orchestra will go to the Elbe..it'a big hall, and they will need to fill it as often as possible.

Im not with you on that issue.. Those 3 halls will certainly have no problems with offering a full range program over the whole year, plannings include

international orchestra concerts, opera, chamber concerts, different residence-artists, the 'NDR Sinfonieorchester', the 'Philharmoniker Hamburg', the 'Hamburger Symphoniker', the 'Ensemble Resonanz', different amateur orchestras and -choirs, jazz concerts, world music, pop music, latin music, ...

Hamburgs music offerings will over all be richer. If someone will not generate enough business it might be other concert places less nice, but not Laeiszhalle.

In 2011 we will see the first programs :) its not that long anymore

Start is scheduled for October/2009. We'll see :)

Here two interesting articles about Elbphilharmonie's facade. Unfortunately only in German, a pity.

Maybe he doesn't understand what cladding is ;)
wiki: "In building construction, siding or cladding may refer to the application of one material over another to provide a skin or layer intended to control the infiltration of weather elements, or for aesthetic purposes"

Again trouble for this strange project . Hochtief construction firm and project developer demand again more money from the city and threatened the city ,the construction could need a year more , also they are more or less in time now and the construction need at all 2 Years .:bash:

First glass is there: www.hamburg1.de - Hamburg1 TV video clip (http://video.telvi.de/videos/2009/51/e0171f9333a9b4a49addaef4727ee5ae.flv)

I already wondered how big those two were compared. I wouldn't have thought that the Elb Philharmonie was that much bigger.

@ Denoordrotterdamer : Yes , indeed it is a superb project. Its not just The size but architecture is verry big challenge for the involved engineers and construction company. The bigger concert room ( "grosser Saal") is situated like huge stomach in the building will stretching over 11 - 14 floors , but where it is are of course no floors , no ceillings . Statical challenge. The room will be "dressed " into a white skin , an unusual , verry new material for sound proove (?) , because the building will also host several luxury condos and 240 room hotel , the concerts should not touch them.

In the "General urban developments" you will find in the thread Hamburg-Hafencity developments also some later pics of the concert-hall and the rest of "HafenCity". :)

Wonderful close-up shots of the cladding.

What a stunner... it's going to be incredible when it's finished. And watching the construction process is incredible to begin with!

oh boy, at first I thought the cladding was damaged by the storm a few days ago. I'm not sure what to say. it is unique, that's for sure. but is it going to look nice, when finished? let's wait and see how it turns out.
