SteelCity32 October 4th, 2002, 10:21 PM Burj Al Arab
Dubai, UAE
HEIGHT: 321m/1,053 feet
FLOORS: 60 floors
COMPLETION: 1999
ARCHITECT: W.S. Atkins & Partners
The world's tallest hotel has acquired the reputation of being the world's most luxurious hotel and has been swamped with critical acclaim from travel writers around the globe. Journalist Kathi Everden commented: "There is no such thing as a seven star hotel because hotel ratings only go up to five star. But there are hotels that go beyond five star so the terminology has grown up around Burj Al Arab because it is an exceptional hotel.
Tom Wills Wright, architect with WS Atkins, explained: "The brief was to create a building that would become an icon for Dubai rather like Sydney has its Opera House and Egypt has the pyramids. The brief was given by Jumierah International who wanted something novel, different, which can be symbol of Dubai. The litmus test we used to assess if we had fulfilled the brief was to see if we could draw the building in five seconds Pictionary style and ask everybody to name it. "We built the tower on its own island because we thought it enhanced the iconic nature of the building, and that seemed logical because the building looks like a sail of a ship."
Central to the hotel's design is the atrium. It takes up a third of the interior space and, with a height of 182 metres; it could accommodate the Statue of Liberty. Technology is everywhere in the hotel from the suite-only bedrooms to the submarine that carries guests to the Al Mahara underwater restaurant. A team of marine biologists look after the three huge aquariums which create a coral reef that is home to 40 species of fish.

RafflesCity October 4th, 2002, 10:36 PM 8.5/10
One of the most unusual buildings around, and very well suited to its environment too!
Imagine it in NY...
Sunflower October 5th, 2002, 12:23 AM Fits in well.
8/10 :)
European October 5th, 2002, 01:30 AM 7/10 :)
AG October 5th, 2002, 04:10 AM One of the world's most unique pieces of architecture, and well designed.
9.5/10
hypermount October 5th, 2002, 04:40 AM 9.5/10 !!
Jasonhouse October 5th, 2002, 06:54 AM A masterpiece. No matter how much they make a building have a similar shape, nothing will duplicate the perfection of this design. One of my goals before I age much is to vacation in this hotel for a few days. I wouldn't want to stay too long, or I would probably never want to leave.
Jasonhouse October 5th, 2002, 06:54 AM Whoops... 9.5/10
baqthier October 5th, 2002, 07:38 AM 9.7/10!
Bobdreamz October 5th, 2002, 10:01 AM a very weird building...I don't know if that is good or bad..it is interesting...8/10,,,
cgrassham October 5th, 2002, 01:34 PM Wonderful beautiful unusual design :D That looks great at night
DrumCorpsAlum October 7th, 2002, 06:07 AM So sharp, it'll poke you eye out. Dude, 9.5/10.
Caledon1981 October 7th, 2002, 06:24 AM ahhh . . 9.8/10:cool:
SUNNI October 7th, 2002, 08:24 AM does it have an island for itself? ill give it 9.5
X-seed 4000 October 7th, 2002, 08:52 AM If it were possibly I'd give it a 6/5! This is 1 of my 3 favorite skyscrapers ever!
Homeroids October 7th, 2002, 12:56 PM Yeah I love it. 8.5/10. I think it's location on the man made peninsular has a lot to do with selling it's design and uniqueness. Imagine if it was in downtown Hong Kong or Sydney. It wouldn't have the same impact on the senses.
Manuel October 7th, 2002, 07:37 PM Unique is the word imo. Carefully designed but looks a bit fat to me.
a high 8.5/10.
Patrick October 7th, 2002, 10:45 PM much too wide in my eyes
2
Umawi October 9th, 2002, 09:30 PM Nice but I would have liked it more if it was designed by locals. There are some very decent architects in the region.
Ersh October 9th, 2002, 10:05 PM Very exotic and sci-fi looking. I like this one...9/10 :)
TYW October 10th, 2002, 05:48 AM 8 / 10
nice design
Procurator October 10th, 2002, 07:55 AM 5.0/10. It's interesting, just not in my town, k? ;)
miaouss October 11th, 2002, 12:58 AM Very impressive ! I love it !
9.5/10
MSPtoMKE October 11th, 2002, 03:28 AM Very unique. Over all, very nice. Of course, i am a sucker for any aerial like that one...
8/10
250gto October 11th, 2002, 07:43 AM 7. If it went on a diet, started exercising, and got lipo on those gigantic white love handles, a 9.
giallo October 19th, 2002, 01:48 AM In my top ten all time favourites. 10
ryanr October 20th, 2002, 11:17 AM My favorite building. Truly a masterpiece.

NickT October 20th, 2002, 02:00 PM 10/10 Beautiful peice of architecture
CTroyMathis October 21st, 2002, 03:13 AM Splendid isolation! :) 9.
CTroyMathis October 21st, 2002, 03:20 AM Oh, I also wish they'd have kept the Chicago Beach Resort Hotel name... ;)
Steven November 4th, 2002, 08:46 PM 9.0 for being unique and interesting.
D-Mac November 20th, 2002, 07:43 AM Wonderfully unusual! A giant sail-shaped building built on the water! Those last two pictures are amazing. Imagine going for a swim on the beach with a 321m hotel in front of you! One of my favourites in the world, 9.5/10
Liz L November 20th, 2002, 08:35 AM 8.5/10 - Great philosophical question for 1:30 AM - does a private island count as a legitimate architectural feature? Well, if good architecture depends on good context that actual people can enjoy, yeah, it does. You are so right, Dmac - that tower would be one impressive background for a swim!
The tower itself is just unusual enogh for me to have a hard time "wrapping my eyes around it" and forming a coherent impression, but here goes...
The sail-like shape is lively and appropriate, but it doesn't soar as well as it could because it's a bit wide, and, to my eyes at least, the curve isn't as graceful as it could be.
There's a good contrast between the different sections of the facade, but I'm not quite used yet to that "industrial style" that has girders out in front of the wall, instead of in it. And they should do something more with that wimpy little antenna, which doesn't seem worthy of the tower. Plus, what are those two whatzitz sticking out of of the wall and making a **big** dent in the flow of the lines? :?
But it still seems to fit the place very well...
250gto - love your rapier wit! I laughed so hard I think I almost woke my husband! :rotf:
Rafflescity - I'm also rolling on the floor imagining this in NYC!!
:rotf:
hngcm November 20th, 2002, 09:53 AM a 9.5/10, would be better if it was in San Diego....
Northbeach November 20th, 2002, 10:22 AM One of the most aesthetic hotels outside of Brussels this.
Reminds me of a giant yacht which has lost it's baby mother. A suggestion perhaps of necro-oscillation in its architecture? I'm not entirely sure. It has a arc descension spurting from it's inner foyer which would put most kitten clinics to shame.
Almost masterpheric.
9/10.
CG5 November 21st, 2002, 06:34 AM A true masterpice. The Burj Al Arab is a landmark tower, and the funkiest, quirkiest, coolest hodge-podge of architectural styles on earth. Gotta love this building!
One of my VERY RARE 10/10's. Two thumbs WAY up.
crazyhorse_88 December 21st, 2002, 07:57 PM 7/10:baaa: :baaa: :baaa:
Wu-Gambino December 22nd, 2002, 04:44 PM I think that this is probably one of the most overrated buildings in the world 10, see what I mean?!?
Bahraini Spirit December 29th, 2002, 01:25 AM simply stunning building. i would give it 10 out of 10.
SeeMacau January 3rd, 2003, 08:01 AM 10/10
Masterpiece of architecture
bayareakid January 3rd, 2003, 10:17 AM 10/10
Love the building. It looks so good in it's the natural setting like that.
mimil January 3rd, 2003, 03:26 PM holy sit.........a perfect masterpiece.
10000000/10 :applause:
Wu-Gambino January 3rd, 2003, 05:23 PM Actually, I changed my mind. I HATE this building, I hate how it looks, I hate it's location in the skylline, and I HATE how it looks like a sail! 5
Tony 175 January 4th, 2003, 05:58 AM It looks kind of cool, but its too lonely. I guess they put it out at sea cuz they knew it would never fit in a real skyline.:D :D
Tony 175 January 4th, 2003, 05:59 AM Oh i forgot. I give it a 7.
Unique but weird.
kasperluke February 12th, 2003, 08:23 AM I love it!!! Stunning! It doesn't look as tall as it really is....
9.5!
Westin Peachtree February 12th, 2003, 08:41 AM I don't know what to say...it's...nevermind. Unrated.
Tallest hotel in the world my ass. If I were to stay here I'd want to stay at the top, but that isn't even tall. I'd have more fun staying in the Marriott RenCen or Westin Peachtree. At least they are taller. Like some other said before, it is kinda fat and I am not too fond of being poked in the eye.
Nice try, but that's all it is, a try.

It doesn't look tall because it isn't! That frame with the pole on it counts for it's total height. The height to the roof is only around 650 ft.

Ahh ok...probably does account for that then... but even looking at the spire looks small.. well in photos anyway.
How high is 600 ft in metres? 180?
johonbravo February 15th, 2003, 03:50 AM definately a 10/10
one of my favorite buildings!

You're a HICK, Country Bumpkin from the South and your comments come as no surprise considering you're from that Miserable city of Hotlanta!

Monkey March 16th, 2003, 02:45 AM Simply spectacular!
That sailboat out there in the Arabian desert, just brilliant & stunning!
I've got a huge problem, though: I like my hotel rooms to have a balcony. Also, I think I would go stir crazy there in the middle of practically nowhere ...
9.5
ganjavih March 16th, 2003, 10:30 AM Not bad... unique... but a bit overrated.

Izeklah August 12th, 2003, 07:50 PM 9.0. One of the main things I look for when judging a building is originality. I like lunatic pipe dreams that nobody has ever done before, and this one definitely fits that description. If it were just a little slimmer.... Or is the fatness part of what makes it so good?
Labrador August 13th, 2003, 09:33 PM 8.5/10
It is a very original design, as well as being tall, and well suited in it's position. Personally, I'm not that keen on it, but I can see why people are. It deserves the score just for it's identity, and recognisability. :)

LibertyTwo July 16th, 2004, 02:30 PM This is a cool building, very unique and on that fact it gets a 9
But I just can't stand that little olympic torch thing it has going on at the top, the big circular dish...and on the other side, the conference room just does not fit well into the desgin, a giant rectangle slammed into the top of a gian triangle...just looks odd, luckily it is pointing out to the sea and I guess few ssee it from land
6.5/10 over all
9/10 on originality
8.5/10 on size
5/10 on flow
Cool building, but just a bit too much for me, I like many others in Dubai more
LeCom July 22nd, 2004, 03:27 AM Pretty squat-looking, but helluva original and looks real posh. 8.5/10

The circular dish is a Helipad
What you call "conference room" is actually a Restaurant and a Bar.
If someone doesn't know yet, this building is a Hotel, considered World's most luxurious Hotel and the only 7 star Hotel yet.
giergel July 25th, 2004, 08:58 PM 9/10! I like the lights of that tower.
Justadude July 27th, 2004, 05:50 PM It seems this building has had something of a Sydney effect on Dubai-- taken an otherwise obscure skyline (to your average person, anyway) and given it a reason to be famous...
Trances July 28th, 2004, 08:20 AM what do you mean what has sydney done to be famous
what building would you say did that
But yes this building has been sold as landmark tower and has much to answer for to making Dubai famous
LibertyTwo July 28th, 2004, 02:53 PM This is a nice building, original, and unique to Dubai...but I have a few questions about it an Emerits Towers (hope I spelled that right)
[1] The actually roof of this building is what about 700 feet, with 300 feet of architectural design at the top...is there a reason for this, other than height...like environmental etc...also, I hear the facade has an element of cloth to it, is this true as well
[2] Emerits towers, they look like the top 1/4 are ornamental as well...the copper tone portion of the towers...also I see pics where it looks like there are gaps in the side of the building, it looks really cool, is this true as well
[3] Is the hotel occupancy rate of Dubai high? And who are the major tourists there?
and finally...think the sydney comparison meant how the opera house and this tower are similar in colour and design, very ocean orientated, shell shape, white, etc...
Thanks guys

Yep there are gaps!!!
Hotel occupancy is very very very high!! Dubai has a massive number of 5 star hotels and they are 95% occupied!! Theres massive demand!! There are 2 hotels going up every year!!!
Most of the tourists are from Europe, The middle east, the americas and asia!!
I dont know about australia!!
Cheers

The atrium is 400 fit tall :eek2:

AltinD August 12th, 2004, 06:49 PM Yesterday morning one of Burj Al Arab's Rolls Royce Silver Seraph was involved in an aksident in Highway.
http://www.germantravelnetwork.com/Html/Graphics/Specials/burjalarab/tr1-1.jpg
A green Toyota tercel or Corolla had rearend it. Other car's radiator and front bumber was gone and the bonnet was bended but the Rollse seamed to have soffer only scratches on the rear bumber.
I hope it was returning from dropping off a guest in Airport and not picking up one, so it would have been only the driver inside. :wallbash:
Mortar & Pestle August 12th, 2004, 07:10 PM A very innovative and unique structure, appropriate to the region. Looks a bit like a wind surfboard sail, taking a ride on the water.
8.5/10
Dubai-Lover August 15th, 2004, 05:28 PM hey altind, seen this accident as well on my way home. if you see one of thwe white royces it definitely belongs to burj al arab!

Sitol447 August 15th, 2004, 11:57 PM 10/10 - My fav building!
cinosanap August 16th, 2004, 05:04 PM this building is 1 of my top 10 favourites
i would love to stay in it for a day or two (or five) but will probebly never beable to afford it
i give it 10/10 for its cool sleek design :poke:
Prestonian August 19th, 2004, 06:41 PM 10/10 I think this building is a stunner. That swimming pool....
wajz August 26th, 2004, 09:59 AM A ridiculously sublime building... or sublimely ridiculous? Whatever the case: this is an iconic tower, a work of art. Now, if only the interior would match the high-tech sleekness of the exterior, instead of going all-out on gold plating and hideous neo-baroque kitsch-glitz, I would happily score this a 10/10/ But 9.5/10 isn't bad either.
Dubai-Lover August 26th, 2004, 02:41 PM uploaded my private pics. now you can have a view into the hotel.

SkyHawk January 20th, 2005, 05:02 PM 10/10 very original and beautyfull
th0m January 24th, 2005, 01:25 PM Its unique, but its also very tacky. And for some reason it doesn't look as tall as it is, but I think thats because of the huge spire on top. 7/10
Pindakaas January 26th, 2005, 10:04 PM This tower is extremely beautiful. If you draw it everyone will recognise it, because the shape is so unique. Ten out of ten for me.
salamagd January 29th, 2005, 06:01 AM 7.5/10 for me - nice unique design, but it seems to have an air of clunkyness, and doesn't seem anywhere near its true height.

DUBAI March 30th, 2005, 04:12 AM well then try buying gas in stead of petrol!
all skyscrapers are built from exploitaion of peoples pockets!
this one just happens to be beautifull~!
SkyHigh529 March 30th, 2005, 05:58 AM ^The price of my gasoline is linked to the price of oil, so therefore it is not that funny so I'm not sure what you are laughing at.
And for the record I can't wait to buy my first electric car. And I especially can't wait for the rest of the world to follow, and put them greedy oil tycoons out of business.

BUT this tower is a cheater with its huge spire. I can't wait til the New York Times/80 South Street/Bank of America Towers make the top 25 because of its spires lol.

BUT this tower is a cheater with its huge spire. I can't wait til the New York Times/80 South Street/Bank of America Towers make the top 25 because of its spires lol.
it is not a cheater. the spire fits into design and is part of the sail which the BAA is supposed to represent.
sfenn1117 August 1st, 2005, 02:23 AM I'm not saying the spire doesn't fit into the tower. It looks great and I love this building. But what is the roof height of the building, 800 feet? That's my point.
When the new towers being built in NYC with spires are placed on these lists I don't want to hear anyone complain.
dubaiflo August 1st, 2005, 01:05 PM it depends on how the spire is intergrated in the design, and here it is almost perfect,
roof height is about 240m.
_zner_ August 1st, 2005, 01:15 PM i like it.. the shape is good but one thing bothers me... the design of the building inside.. its kinda very historic.... oh well...
malec August 1st, 2005, 01:21 PM Well, the interiors are really overdone, but it's supposed to be like that. They look kinda cool in a way.
malec August 1st, 2005, 01:54 PM Here are some pics from its completely over the top and insane interior decor. The good thing is that every place seems to have its own designs.
A good quote from Markmywords describes it perfectly:
The first impression you get from it is ofcourse "Isnt that too freaking gaudy?" and you can hear the whole building screaming at you "Idiot! thats the intention"
