MANILA, Philippines—The strongest typhoon in the world this year hit the country making its way out of northern Luzon but its howling winds and continuous rains from Monday night to Tuesday morning left at least 12 people dead.

“Juan” is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday afternoon after slowing down in the South China Sea.

Many areas in northern Luzon remained without power and communications facilities a day after Super-typhoon “Juan” (international code name: Megi) ripped over the region with gusts of 260 kilometers per hour.

“The waves in Maconacon were as big as houses and swamped the town plaza facing the Pacific Ocean,” Isabela Gov. Faustino Dy said over dzBB radio as he appealed for help.

Dy said water, food and medicine were desperately needed in Maconacon, a village of about 4,000 people that remained isolated and only accessible by helicopter or by small boat.

Three people in Maconacon drowned in the storm surge and many others were wounded on Monday, he said.

Dy said he could not give a full report of the damage to all coastal areas because the 240-kilometer northeastern shoreline of Isabela remained difficult to reach.

The super-typhoon destroyed huge tracts of rice and corn crops, an official said, warning the country could be forced to import more rice.

Nearly 100,000 hectares of rice and corn crops had been destroyed across Isabela, one of the Philippines’ key farming regions, Governor Dy said.

The Philippines, the world’s largest rice importer, imported 2.4 million tons of rice last year.

Initial field reports are not encouraging, with the governor of the key agricultural province of Isabela estimating 385,000 tons of rice and 46,400 tons of corn will be lost.

Damage to agriculture was initially placed at more than P1.55 billion, with rice and vegetable farmers taking heavy losses, the Department of Agriculture said.

Assistant Agriculture Secretary Salvador Salacup said the figure was a “conservative” estimate.

The strong winds had dissipated after Juan moved off the west coast of Luzon early on Tuesday morning. But it continued to unleash rain after its trajectory toward China stalled and it hovered near Luzon throughout Tuesday.

“Its radius is 300 kilometers so even if it has left the country, rains will continue to affect us, probably until tonight,” said Benito Ramos, head of the national disaster monitoring council.

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, Juan was spotted 280 km west northwest of Dagupan City, moving at 7 kph toward China. At its fastest, Juan moved at 24 kph.

The typhoon carried maximum winds of 175 kph near the center and gusts of up to 210 kph in the open sea.

At a 5 p.m. briefing Tuesday, Aldczar Aurelio, a junior government forecaster, said the typhoon was almost stationary in the South China Sea Tuesday morning. A high pressure area northwest of Juan prevented it from moving further for a few hours, he said.

Due to bad weather, eight flights to and from Batanes and Palawan were canceled at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Tuesday.

Schools were suspended in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon amid fears of flash floods, while rescue workers tried to reach villagers stranded in remote areas that were cut off by the typhoon.

Buri tree kills 3

Elsewhere in Luzon, nine people were reported killed.

In Pangasinan, a mother and her two children were killed on Monday night in San Fabian town after a buri tree pinned them down while the typhoon was raging.

Paterno Orduña, executive officer of the provincial disaster council, identified the victims as Ana Vidal, 29, and her daughter EJ, 4, and son Ogie, 2.

The three were lying on the floor and were about to sleep at 7:30 p.m. when the tree fell on their house.

Their deaths brought to four the number of typhoon-related fatalities in Pangasinan. On Monday morning, Reddy Espinosa, a farmer in Mangatarem town, died after he was hit by lightning.

In Nueva Ecija, the provincial disaster council said Roberto Alcaybar drowned while he was crossing a river in Carranglan town on Monday night.

Electrocuted

In Benguet, the lone fatality was Broslie Badival who was electrocuted after stepping on a fallen power line on Monday night in La Trinidad town.

Typhoon-related fatalities were also reported in Baguio City, Kalinga and Cagayan.

Reports from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in the Cordillera Administrative Region said Andres Realina, a forest guard at the Busol watershed in Baguio City, died after a tree fell on the guard house where he was staying on Monday.

A woman in Rizal, Kalinga, was also killed when a tamarind tree, blown by strong winds, crashed on her house.

The OCD in Cagayan Valley said the body of Vicente Decena was swept away by strong current in the Cagayan River in Tuguegarao City also on Monday.

Reports from the Department of Social Welfare and Development said 181,742 people were taken to government evacuation centers in Baguio, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Mountain Province and Kalinga.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council gave a smaller number. It said the number of evacuees almost tripled overnight to 8,529 persons as of Tuesday noon from 3,687 persons as of Monday afternoon.

The disaster council said 1,736 families consisting of 8,529 persons mostly from Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan were housed in 52 evacuation centers.

The council said 110 families or 562 persons went to evacuation centers in Manila.

Drastic drop in casualties

Mayor Gregorio Abalos Jr. of La Trinidad, Benguet, said the town was aiming for a zero fatality rate but the lone typhoon-related death in his town was a drastic drop from the 77 landslide deaths in Little Kibungan during last year’s onslaught of Typhoon “Pepeng” (Parma).

The evacuation of families still living near the danger zone in Little Kibungan helped minimize fatalities this year. Abalos had to bring along policemen to drive away 45 families from the community.

“Surely, [the fatality count] is low because people prepared better [this time], and they have been careful,” said Baguio Bishop Carlito Cenzon.

The OCD reported only six people hurt in the Cordillera.

Run-off water collected at the City Camp Lagoon in Baguio City reached 10 feet on Tuesday morning.

Apayao’s Maranas River overflowed, obstructing traffic in a section of the Apayao-Ilocos Norte Road. Kms 668 and 672 of the Claveria-Calanasan Road are still closed due to landslides.

All roads leading to Kalinga have been closed due to landslides.

Kennon Rd. closed

The Mountain Province towns of Natonin, Paracelis and Sadanga have been isolated by landslides, said Edilberto Carabbacan, Cordillera director of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

The OCD said road cuts closed Kilometer 400 of the Mt. Province-Ilocos Sur Road; the Mt. Province-Cagayan Road traversing the Tabuk-Enrile Road; Kilometer 410 of the Mutiti-Ampawilen Road; and Kilometer 420 of the Malanas-Mamaga Road, both in the Sadanga section of Mountain Province.

Landslides also hit Kilometer 378 of the Halsema Highway (Gonogon section leading to Bontoc, Mountain Province), the main route bridging vegetable farms and the trading post at La Trinidad, Benguet.

Kennon Road, a major route to and from Baguio, has been closed for clearing operations due to rock slides.

Landslides cut off the Bokod-Kabayan Road and the Benguet-Nueva Vizcaya Road in Benguet; and Kilometers 381 and 407 of the Banaue-Mayoyao-Alfonso Lista Road and the Mayoyao-Aguinaldo Road, both in Ifugao.

Harvest season

Although the northern third of the country is regularly struck by typhoons, the timing of Juan was crucial because it coincided with the biggest of the year’s four harvests, said Maura Lizarondo, assistant director of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics.

Isabela is part of Cagayan Valley region, which accounted for 13.25 percent of last year’s rice output and 24.26 percent of corn production, he said.

The agriculture department said Ilocos (Region I), Cagayan Valley (Region II) and Central Luzon (Region III) were seriously affected. Damage to corn was pegged at P396 million.

The department said 815 metric tons of vegetables were destroyed in Region II. The typhoon destroyed P1.7 million worth of palay (unmilled rice), fruits and vegetables in Abra, according to the OCD.

Salacup said 90 percent of the corn planted had been harvested. It was still too early to tell the palay situation, he said.

But as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, 70,000 metric tons of palay were damaged, much lower than the worst-case scenario of 600,000 MT, he said.

Based on the report of National Food Authority Administrator Angelito Banayo, there is sufficient rice in NFA warehouses to meet the country’s needs in the next 52 days, Salacup said.

This despite the 804 metric tons of rice ruined in the NFA warehouses in Isabela, the country’s second-largest rice-producing province, the agriculture department said.

Outages

Several areas in northern Luzon may have to endure four to seven days of outages due to the extensive damage to transmission lines.

“Damage was worse than expected. For one, 11 (of the 50) towers of the Gamu-Tuguegarao 230 kilovolt (kV) were toppled,” said Cynthia Alabanza, spokesperson of National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), the country’s transmission operator.

Alabanza said longer power outages in Cagayan, northern Isabela, Kalinga and Apayao were due primarily to the extensive damage to the 80-km Gamu-Tuguegarao line, one of the most crucial lines in north Luzon.

Among the NGCP-owned 69 kV transmission lines that were damaged were the Tuguegarao–Magapit, Magapit–Sta. Ana, Tuguegarao–Tabuk, La Trinidad–Bulalacao, San Manuel-Manaoag, Bayombong-Lagawe, Bongabon–Baler and the Bauang–Naguillan lines.

Also damaged were the Kadampat-Masinloc 230kV; San Manuel-Kadampat 500kV; Binga–San Manuel 230 kV Line 1; and the Santiago-Gamu 230 kV.

Early evacuation

The Pangasinan disaster council said there could have been more casualties in the province had authorities not conducted forced evacuation of people, especially in the coastal areas.

On Tuesday morning, several high-rise buildings in Dagupan City had shattered glass windows and leaves and tree branches littered the roads.

Flooding was also reported in low-lying areas of Labrador and Manaoag towns.

Prices of ‘bangus’ drop

Bangus (milkfish), the main fishery product of Pangasinan province, flooded the public market there, its price dropping to P60 a kilogram, down from its regular price of P80 a kg.

“Many bangus growers, especially in western Pangasinan towns, harvested their stocks early than lose them to the sea,” said Emma Molina, a Dagupan agriculturist.

Julie Perez, the president of the Malimgas-Aliguas Dagupan Market Vendors Federation, said there was an oversupply of bangus because there were no buyers.

“Our buyers are usually from the Cagayan Valley and Metro Manila. But because of the bad weather, they could not come,” Perez said.

Ilocos Norte spared

It was business as usual in Ilocos Norte as Juan weakened, bringing minimal rains and winds on Tuesday.

Gov. Imee Marcos said the province suffered no major damage after the storm changed course bringing minimal rain since Sunday night.

The Laoag City and Ilocos Norte disaster councils reported no typhoon-related casualty or damage to infrastructure despite strong winds and occasional heavy rain dumped by Juan.

The towns of Bangui, Pagudpud, Adams and Dumalneg, which are serviced by the Bangui wind power plant and the hydroelectric plant of the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative (INEC), experienced power interruptions after the two facilities were shut down on Monday.

Renato Balintec, INEC general manager, said several towns went without power on Monday night due to system shutdown. But power was immediately restored after lines were normalized.

Central Luzon

In a 2 p.m. update on Tuesday, the OCD in Central Luzon said 6,168 people were affected by floods in 15 villages in Dilasag, Dinalungan and Casiguran in Aurora; Malolos City in Bulacan; Carranglan in Nueva Ecija; San Clemente and Paniqui in Tarlac; and Macabebe in Pampanga.

At least 2,172 people were transferred to evacuation centers.

Preemptive evacuations were done in Barangay Pit-ao in San Clemente, Tarlac, as floodwaters rose to between three and four feet after a dike along the Batacan River was damaged.

In Pampanga, the provincial disaster council on Tuesday ordered the forced evacuation of 54 families in San Juan Baño in Arayat town to protect them from another landslide.

Provincial administrator Andres Pangilinan Jr. said the council decided to evacuate some 200 families living along the Guemasan and Cupang stretch of the Arayat-Apalit setback levee. Two months before Christmas, DOH issues 'paputok' warnings

Two months before the start of the holiday season, the Department of Health (DOH) has launched its 'kontra-paputok' (anti-fireworks) advocacy to lessen the number of fireworks-related injuries.

DOH Secretary Dr. Enrique Ona said on Wednesday the health department started its campaign early because of the higher number of fireworks-related injuries in 2009, compared to 2008.

Last year, 990 cases of fireworks-related injuries were recorded. This is 39% higher than the 717 cases reported in 2008. The number of stray bullet injuries also spiked, from 17 cases in 2008 to 45 cases in 2009.

"The figures increased despite our continuing advocacy, so we're starting early this year," he said.

This year, the DOH's advocacy will most especially focus on children using fireworks.

"The DOH data clearly indicates that children are most prone and vulnerable to fireworks-related injuries," the health chief said, adding that personally, he wants to ban the use of fireworks for children below 12 years old.

The 2009 DOH report on fireworks-related injuries revealed that the most affected group belonged to the 1-10 year old age bracket. Majority of these injuries were caused by directly handling the fireworks.

The DOH is also counting on local government units to protect the public from fireworks-related injuries by strictly enforcing the ban on the manufacture and purchase of dangerous firecrackers like super lolo, plapla, five star and sawa, among others.

However, Ona said the public should remain cautious even when using 'legal' firecrackers like kwitis and lusis.

"Although legally allowed, [the use of these firecrackers] cannot be equated to safety," he said. "There's no such thing as a harmless firecracker."

He also urged communities to pool together their resources to buy the more visual type of fireworks usually seen in big events, a more expensive type but less dangerous compared to 'noisy' fireworks that Filipinos are accustomed to.

"Hindi ho ba during New Year, pinapakita sa TV kung anong ginagawa sa ibang bansa. Hindi na sila ang nagpapaputok, may magagandang fireworks na lang na pinapanood sa langit," he said.

(On New Year, we see on TV other countries' celebrations, where the people just watch the beautiful fireworks in the sky instead of lighting the fireworks themselves.)

He said local governments can designate a common fireworks display area where families can come together and watch the fireworks display handled by professionals.

PNP, BFP join in holiday safety advocacy

The Philippine National Police (PNP) expressed their support for the health department's advocacy, saying that they will intensify the monitoring of the illegal manufacturers of pyrotechnics.

"We will confiscate illegal fireworks starting at the manufacturing stage, even before they are distributed and sold," PNP Chief Inspector Rico Bracamonte said.

He also urged the public to report immediately cases of stray bullets during the holidays.

He said these reports will help them find out who fired a gun and where the bullet came from.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) also reminded the public to buy only firecrackers that are of good quality.

The BFP inspects products and factories of fireworks manufacturers. The agency also issues a "Fire Saftey Inspection Certificate" to companies complying with safety standards.

"You may look for the certificate before purchasing your fireworks," BFP Public Information Officer Chief Inspector Honee Alagano said. "If they have the certificate, that means they passed the safety standards of the BFP." –VVP, GMANews.TV

MALOLOS—Pinalad na hindi masapul ng super bagyong Juan ang Bulacan ngunit isa katao ang nasaktan, 715 ang inilikas at isang bahay ang muntik ng matupok sa bayan ng Hagonoy.

Kaugnay nito, kinansela ang klase sa mga paaralang elementarya ay sekundarya sa lalawigan noong Martes, Oktubre 19 habang palabas ng bansa ang bagyo, dahil ang buntot nito ay naghatid ng malakas na pag-ulan at hangin sa lalawigan.

Nakapinsala rin ng tinatayang P80-M halaga ng pananim ang malakas na hangin at pag-ulan na hatid ng bagyong Juan.

Batay sa tala ng Provincial Disaster Management Office (PDMO), ang nasaktan ay nakilalang si Rami Alkandra, 25, isang resident eng Brgy. Tikay sa Lungsod na ito.

Ang biktima ay nahagip ng isang lumipad na yero sa Brgy. Tikay bandang ala-1:30 ng medaling araw noong Martes at isinugod sa Bulacan medical Center.

Nagsagawa rin ng preemptive evacuation sa sa lungsod na itong noong Lunes, Oktubre 18 kung saan ay umabot sa 715 katao ang pansamantalang inilikas sa Atlag Elementary School at Malolos Central School.

Sila ay inilikas upang hindi maapektuhan ng pagtaas ng tubig sanhi ng high tide ast pag-ulan, at posibleng epekto ng malakas na hangin sa kanulang mga tahanan na yari sa kahoy.

Sa bayan nbg Hagonoy, himalang hindi tuluyang natupok ang isang bahay na nasunog at hindi rin nadamay ang mga katabing bahay noong Martes ng umaga dahil sa malakas na buhos ng ulan.

Walang nasaktan sa inasidente at hindi pa rin matukoy ang halaga ng nasunog.

Ang bahay na nasunog ay matatagpuan sa Villa Clara Subdivision, Brgy. San Sebastian at pag-aari ng isang Susan Castro, dalaga at kasalukuyang nagtatrabaho sa isang cargo shipping company sa Maynila.

Walang tao sa bahay ng masunog ito dahil si Castro ay umuuwi lamang doon kapag Sabado at Linggo. Siya ay umalis ng bahay noong Lunes ng umaga.

Ayon kay Terry Sunga, isang empleyado sa katabing Maxi-Spring Water refilling station na pag-aari ng kaanak ni Castro, una nilang napansin ang makapal na usok sa bubong ng bahay bandang alas 8 ng umaga noong Martes.

Sinabi niya na hindi agad napasok ng mga bumbero at mga kapitbahay ang nasusunog na bahay dahil nakakandado ang gate at mga pinto’t bintana ng bahay ni Castro.

“Sinira lang nila yung lock sa gate kaya nakapasok at nabomba ng tubig yung loob,” aniya.

Batay naman sa imbestigasyon ng Hagonoy Municipal Fire Station, tuluyang naapula ang apoy bandang alas 9:40 ng umaga.

Ayon pa sa Hagonoy Municipal Fire Station, posibleng nagmula ang sunog sa air-conditioner nito na nai-wang naka-plug.

Nagpasalamat naman sa malakas na buhos ng ulang hatid ng bagyong Juan ang ilang residenteng Villa Clara Subdivision tulad ni Lydia Salazar.

“Mabuti na lang malakas yung ulan, talagang buhos yung ulan kanina kaya hindi nadamay yung ibang bahay sa tabi,” ani Salazar.

Ang nasabing insidente ay ikalawa na sa bayang ito matapos ang mahigit dalawang buwan.

Matatandaan na noong Agosto 18 ay nasunog ang palengke ng Hagonoy na hanggang ngayon ay hindi pa naitatayo ang kapalit.

Dahil din sa malakas na ngahin at pag-ulan noong Martes, kinansela ng Department of Education (DepEd) ang klase sa elementarya at sekundarya sa lalawigan.

Ayon kay Provincial Administrator Jim Valerio, ang nagpalabas ng utos sa pagkakansela ng klase ay si Dr. Edna Zerrudo, ang division superintendent ng DepEd sa Bulacan.

“Mas maganda pa kasi yung kondisyon ng panahon natin kahapon nung mag-land-fall si Juan,” ani Valerio.

Sa larangan ng pagsasaka, sinabi ni Gloria Carillo, ang hepe ng provincial agriculture office na tinatayang aabot sa P80-M ang napinsalang palayan sa lalawigan.

BALIUAG, Bulacan -- Patay ang isang pinaghihinalaang holdaper, habang nakatakas naman ang kasama nito matapos makipagpalitan ng putok sa mga otoridad kahapon ng madaling araw sa Lopes Jaena St., Bgy. Sto. Cristo dito sa nabanggit na bayan.

Ayon sa inisyal na report na pinadala sa People’s Tonight ni Sr. Supt. Fernando Villanueva, may natangap na tawag ang Baliuag police na may robbery-holdup na nagaganap sa Bgy. Santa Barbara.

Namataan ang mga suspek na nakasakay sa isang motorsiklo at agad na nakipagpalitan ito ng putok sa mga nagrespondeng pulis.

Matapos ang putukan, isa sa mga suspek ang patay habang ang isa ay nakatakas sa may palayan.

Sinabi rin ni Villanueva na dakong alas-12:30 a.m. nang masukol ng tumutugis na elemento ng Baliuag Police ang mga holdaper sa kahabaan ng Lopez Jaena St.

Narekober sa pinangyarihan ng bakbakan ang isang kalibre .38, 9mm pistol, Bajaj motorcycle at ang mga ninakaw na gamit sa biktimang si Noel de Leon.

Kinilala ang biktima na si Lolita Pascual, 35-anyos, may-ari ng karinderya sa na sabing lugar habang na aresto naman agad ang suspek na si Dennie La cerna, 39, ng Las Palmas Subdivision ng naturang barangay.
Ayon sa ulat ng pulisya, bandang alas-6:45 kama kalawa ng gabi ng sumu god ang suspek sa karin derya na armado ng 12-pul gadang haba na kutsilyo saka sinaksak ang kan yang dating amo.
Napag-alaman na ti nang gal sa trabaho ang sus pek ng biktima kaya nag tanim ito ng sama ng loob.
Lalong nagalit ang sus pek ng ‘siraan’ pa siya ng kanyang dating amo sa mga gusto niyang pasukan kaya naisip nitong gu manti na lamang sa amo.
Dinala ang sugatang bik tima sa isang ospital sa Quezon City habang na aresto naman ang sus pek sa isinagawang follow-up operations dito.

MEYCAUAYAN, BULACAN (1578)

In Spanish, Meycawayan means a places with abundant bomboo canes. This town was founded in the year 1578 to 1579 by the friars Fr. Juan de Plasencia and Fr. Diego de Oropesa. Of old it was the capital of Bulacan province and was situated about half a leagues to the East, on a small slope or hill. The church and a great part of the town being ruined by a storm in the year 1588 it was transferred to a site called Lagado by Fr. Antonio de Nombela, Minister of the town on the orders of San Pedro Bautista, although no authentic record exist to the effect, but one thing is certain. In the year 1668, the present place and Meycawayan has always remained in this site. The church is under the advocation of St. Francis of Assisi, was at the beginning of bamboo and nipa. Was destroyed by the typhoon of 1588, It was rebuilt after wards but no record exists as to what place, in the same site where it was ruined or in the new site of Lagolo. One thing is certain. A decree of the Superior Goberierno dated 1599 granted license to built a church of stone for the town which was effected the following years. This edifice lasted until 1668 when the town was transferred to the site from Lagolo to the present one. The new minister Fr. Nicolas Santiago began the construction of the church in this new site followed by his successors. A simple edifice but strong enough, 60 yards long some 12and a half yards width. In 1784 a remodeling of the edifice was done by Fr. Jose Cantos. In 1800 the town was built by Fr. Francisco Gascueña, who also made the arch sustaining the choir of stone in 1804. Lastly in 1851, the zealous parroco, Fr. Benito de Madridejos made various repairs, new retablos on the altar and painted the edifice, beautified and enriched it, to the contentment and wonder of any Christian beholder. Beside is a hermitage of stone with nipa roofing where the Christ of Malahacat is venerated by the folks of that barrio where the hermitage is located and every year, in the month of May its fiesta is celebrated...

Juan Valencia, Don Juan Tibay being the gobernadorcillo. Fr. Vicente de la Puebla made repairs in 1852, painted it and beautified it, so the the best temple or church in the archipelago could excel it. There is also a small hermitage dedicated to the Immaculate Concepcion and worker to St. Roque both of which are of stone...

Obando, Bulacan (1754)

A barrio named Catangalang motivated in 1623 the separation of the town of Polo from Meycauayan. This same barrio with the years become a visita of Polo was also the cause of the separation of this town we shall treat. Señor Don Jose Francisco de Obando, marquis of Obando, Gobernador and Capitan General of these Islands with his decree of May 14, 1753 erected into a town the mentioned visita of Polo and giving it a name, the name carries- for reasons unforeseen, the separation was not effected until 1754 with the help of don Francisco Morales Mozarabe, Alcalde Mayor of the province and of Fr. Alejandro Ferrer, Provincial Minister of ST. Gregory with various friars assigning Fr. Manuel de Olivencia as the first minister. Immaculate Conception under the title of The church is dedicated to St. Pascual Baylon, of good Fabric, big with its corresponding cross vault. To build the church and its casa parochial both of which are of stone, the Superior Gobernador had to reserve the two years tribute of all the inhabitants. The church yearly celebrates a big feast lasting for three days attended by an immense crowd coming from far and near. The first day is dedicated to the titular patron St. Pascual Baylon beginning May 17 with a solemn mass and sermon. The second day is in honor of the miraculous image of the Our Lady of the Sarambao, a title given Our Lady for having been found by several fishermen in Manila Bay as recorder in a expedient authorized by the notary clerk, Diego Pascual in 1764. The expedient relates that on a certain Tuesday, June 19, 1763, the brothers Juan and Julain Cruz, fishermen by occupation threw their nets in the place called Hilindoon, when they put up the net, they saw the image in the net, to their great astonishment and joyful brought to the town and afterwards to the church where it is venerated. On the third day, the celebration is in honor of the excellent patron, the Virgin of Assisi, St. Clare whose most antique image reposing in a small hermitage belonged to Mecawayan until 1623 and after wards passed to the ownership of Polo and finally during the separation from the matrix was left to Obando, the hermitage served as interns church meanwhile the church edifice existing today was being built and the sacred image of St. Clare was transferred when the church was finished. During cases of difficult birth and the prolonged labor, it is customary to get the baculo of the Saint to be placed on the patient which is assign of prodigies and happy effects to come.

By the decree of April 21, 1796, the separation of this town Marilao from Mecawayan was verified. Was formerly a visita of Mecawayan. The first minister was Fr. Vicente de Talavera. The church is dedicated to the glorious archangel St. Michael, of solid fabric, big enough, built since the beginning of the century from alms solicited by the minister and voluntary donations of the people who show very little concern in spite of the exhortation and example of the minister.

Baguio-based drug ring busted

BALAGTAS, Bulacan -- Agents of the Bulacan PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Team have broken the distribution network of a Baguio-based drug ring following the arrest of a couple, tagged by the police as major distributor of marijuana in Central Luzon, during a buy-bust operation in Bgy. Wawa here.

Chief Inspector Marlon Santos, Bulacan PNP-CIDT provincial officer, identified the arrested suspects as Temis Bernardo and his live-in partner Carmen Valenzuela, both residents of Bgy. Pag-asa, Bamban, Tarlac.

Santos said five kilos of high grade marijuana bricks with a street value of P27,500 were seized from the suspects who delivered the prohibited stuff on board an owner type jeep (plate number WRD-601) at the back of the Balagtas public market where vegetables from Baguio City are also being brought.

Their arrest came after a CIDT team led by SP01 Edwin Pagsibigan arrested suspected shabu pusher Apple dela Rosa, a resident of Bgy. Wawa and nephew of Bernardo, in a buy-bust operation conducted in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency also in the said area last Monday.

Santos said Pagsibigan seized the SIM card of the mobile phone of Dela Rosa.

He said that when Pagsibigan inserted the SIM card to his cellphone, Bernardo texted his nephew (Dela Rosa) asking him if he will again order marijuana.

Santos said Pagsibigan replied in the positive and agreed to order five kilos of marijuana which was to be delivered at the back of the Balagtas public market.

Santos said that at around 11:30 Wednesday night, the couple arrived and the “dope deal” was consummated which led to their arrest after the couple handed to Pagsibigan a paper bag containing the five bricks of Marijuana.

Santos said the couple allegedly got their supply of marijuana from a suspected drug ring based in Baguio city which the couple distributes in different parts of Central Luzon.
