Thanks Mo! ^^Awsome pic at night!

Shit i wish this stadium was closer to the CBD so every one could see it. With all honesty, only few Joburgers go to that area often.

that may change with this beauty :D

very cool renders.

^^ I hope this is a major catalyst for the area too. That section between the CBD and Gold Reef City and Soweto is a wasteland... would be fantastic if gentrification starts spreading southwards. :) Hopefully also spur on further urban integration between Soweto and Joburg proper.

Also glad Jozi went the best route of calling the stadium what it is, a "Soccer City!" Not name it after some person to score political points. This is name suited to the WC2010 final, the infrastructure is about the Beautiful Game, not the ANC.

^^ Enough! HunterDry didn't even swear in his post, then you claim they "won't leave it" when you constantly up the anti by swearing back at people and constantly replying. One more profane outburst, you'll be reported to the SA Moderator and banned. Now everyone... enough, including the Saffers and lets get back to Soccer City please.

seats are orange by the way. the covers are black, seats are orange, so should look pretty cool with all orange seats.

i personally would have preferred grey setas, but orange works too i guess. both together could also look cool.

Waltjie, no need to be rude.

Jim, all seats will be orange from what I understand, they have black protective covers over them at the moment so the illusion is that some of the seats are black.

Please, give me break....!

Read back in this forum, and I suspect on every page there is someone asking the exact same question... over and over and over again...

I think Dysan should add to the title "with orange seats"...

Please change thread title capacity to 91141

Jim856796
December 6th, 2008, 12:56 AM
^^91,141 is to be the stadium's official capacity? About a month ago, you listed the GreenPoint Stadium's capacity as 69,070. I hope that all 2010 World Cup Stadiums are all-seater stadiums.

hope? its a FIFA requirement to be all seaters. The seat size at Soccer City was increased, hence the lower capacity.

Jim856796

I also hope that all-seating capacity does not include standing room areas. I hate standing room because it is a waste of space in sports facilities.

The inside of the facade is what you see in the fotos, you will see all the structure and the reverse side of the panels.

We're paying what it costs to build a stadium in South Africa that meets FIFA requirements. Our estimates, and that of government were simply way off.

A 70,000 seater in the current climate costs R10 billion in many places across the world . Emirates incl. a conservative inflation estimate comes to R9.5 billion.

FYI

South Africa in the lead up to the FIFA 2010 World Cup, PPC, main supplier of cement to the Soccer City stadium, together with Grinaker-LTA/Interbeton, are hard at work ensuring that this world class stadium is completed on time.

When complete, PPC will have supplied an estimated 16 000 tons of cement for the construction of this unique stadium, accounting for more than 90% of the stadium’s concrete construction requirements.

The bulk of this is for the stadium’s 120 façade columns. Each column, made from self-compacting concrete manufactured using an on-site dry batching process, rests on a 50m³ concrete base. The columns support the roof and side structure of the stadium. The façade will then be covered with huge coloured tiles, manufactured in Austria, to complete the African bowl image.

When finished, “The Calabash” as it is commonly known due to its resemblance to a colourfully-decorated Zulu clay pot, will be the biggest roofed stadium ever built for a World Cup Football Final with over 94 000 seats.

“The stadium is bigger than the Beijing’s ‘Bird’s Nest.’ Furthermore it will cost only a quarter of what it did to build the new Wembley football stadium in London,” says Mike Moody, Project Director for Grinaker-LTA/ Interbeton Soccer City JV. “And what they did in five years, we are doing in just over two,” he adds.

“Contrary to some concerns around the state of readiness and meeting deadlines for 2010, Soccer City will be complete on time,” says Moody. He adds that all parties have come together to ensure that the stadium development is running according to schedule.

A proud affiliate to the stadium, PPC’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr Orrie Fenn says, “PPC takes enormous pride in being involved in projects of this nature. This project fits perfectly with PPC’s philosophy of being a contributor to ‘building the nation,’ and Soccer City will remain a key sporting and cultural facility well beyond the FIFA 2010 World Cup.”

The Soccer City Stadium is being built on behalf of the City of Johannesburg. The architects responsible for the project are Boogertman Urban Edge and Partners.

the holes in the facade are covered with 6mm polycarbonate - OVER the gutter, which is the "equator" of the stadium, only.
below this gutter there are real holes in the facade - NO polycarbonate. this was a decision by the architects.
