I agree it had to be as heigh as the other 2 towers. But the tower is nice not to modern not to old looking.

You realize that it will be as taller (to tip of spire) than Scotia Plaza when finished? It's a very skinny building, but I wouldn't classify it as small.

I don't count spires either. At 257 m to the roof, this will only be 18 m shorter than Scotia Plaza and 39 m taller than Bay-Adelaide.

Definitely not Trump Tower Chicago quality. I figured with it's annoying corner crown feature it wouldn't make any top 10 lists for architecture, but it seems really small compared to the other skyscrapers around it. It may have some height but has no real presence. I always loved that classic look of the First Canada Place, Scotia Bank and the TD Center towers; now this there, I don't know. I think when this is finished it's going to lessen the classic Toronto downtown grouping for me.

It's tucked behind the giants next door so it's actually quite hard to see from many vantage points.

Could a backlash against Donald Trump hurt his new Toronto hotel?
By Marc Weisblott | Daily Brew – Thu, 28 Apr, 2011
Posted at : http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/could-backlash-against-donald-trump-hurt-toronto-hotel-153010524.html

Playing politics may turn out to be not that great for Donald Trump's business.

The real estate baron's pursuit of the Republican presidential nomination has led to a call for a boycott over his opposition to same sex-marriage, and accusations of racism, despite the overriding assumption the run is mostly an ill-conceived publicity stunt.

And, it has all come just in time for the grand opening of Trump's entry into Canada.

Construction of the Trump International Hotel & Tower at the corner of Bay and Adelaide streets in downtown Toronto, has reached the stage where its first overnight guests have booked for June.

The residential component of the 59-storey skyscraper, which will incorporate the highest condominiums in the country, is slated for completion later this year. Alex Shnaider, the billionaire owner of one of the penthouse suites, received his occupancy permit last month.

With hopes of renting out 261 luxury hotel rooms each night, however, a backlash doesn't seem like something the Trump Toronto can afford.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has launched the "Tune Out Trump" campaign geared to draw attention to the candidate's stance against marriage equality, which prompted Rosie O'Donnell to cancel her stay at his hotel in Chicago.

Celebrity critics have also condemned Trump as racist for furthering the view Barack Obama wasn't born in the U.S. The president's release of his birth certificate on Wednesday was regarded as a signal the "birther movement" baiting crossed a line.

The tactics could further tarnish the mogul's reputation in Canada, where the blowhard Republican act can only be regarded as a freak show, even if columnist Peter Worthington of the Toronto Sun has stepped up to assert Trump can't be taken seriously.

Nonetheless, the candidate has maintained he expects to be.

When it comes to promoting the Toronto venture, The Donald can deflect criticism by leaving the publicity to daughter Ivanka, who visited the construction site last summer.

But a ribbon-cutting appearance may be delayed due to the birth of her first child right around the time Trump Toronto checks in its first guest.

Height "still to go?

The KPMG building next to it (Bay-Adelaide) is 218 m tall, so this has a fair bit left. Trump's roof height is just lower than Scotia Plaza (the tall brown building), but Trump's spire pushes it past Scotia Plaza in height.

Regarding Donald and his opinions - sure Canada has far more liberal politics than the US, and Toronto is quite a gay-friendly destination but I'd say the gay men and women would stay near the 'village' on Church & Wellessley?

Well, the quality and execution of the exterior design is quite sub par. I'm thinking the granite section would have actually looked better in precast. The proportions and stone pattern is terrible. You never see that gridpaper pattern on old 1930's buildings.

I've shitlisted the architect. It would have costed them no more $$ to order panels that mimicked a half bond stone pattern.

The east side of the parkade looks incomplete and is a complete eyesore.

I understand this building has its merits. The construction process was fun to watch as the developer had to maneuovre cranes in a very tight lot. The setbacks are quite attractive. I like the reflective qualities of the glass on the residence floors.

But the bottom line is there are no excuses for a lack of attention to detail in a freakin' 5 star project. It looks okay if you squint your eyes but gimme a break!

Compare this to Trump Chicago. 'nuff said

I quite like it. It fits in to the core well, complimenting it rather than trying to take it over, which is good. I'd hate it if the tallest or grandest looking scraper in T.O. had the trump name.

Right now, it's greens, matched with First Canadian Places gleaming white and Scotia's deep red is an awesome trifecta.

... what is happened ? !!! The render was great, the reality is very disappointing... Less high, less good clading ... It seems this building is not at the good scale. Very strange and disturbing ...Renders often present their project from a perspective that makes it appear even bigger - somethimes even overscaled or distorted. On this render one should surely get the impression of a new city's tallest, although the height figures don't match.
I'd prefered this one to be supertall, but I like TTT, although looking tiny compared to the massive First Canadian Plaza and Bank of Nova Sotia. It's good to have this different design with spire among the boxes around. :)

...But comparing to places like Chicago almost paralysed, the recession has been merciful on Toronto. So true! It's hard to find other booming sklines in North America right now - NYC plus maybe Calgary, Oklahoma City and Panama City in the very South.

^^ Unfortunatelly, Trump Tower is mostly hidden at this classic viewpoint. Even the spire isn't fully visible, only the top is above BMO, in the midst of all the antennae. I wonder if this is 282m... doesn't look much taller than Scotia Tower (275m) IMO. I wonder why some sources list TTT at 277m / 59 or 57 floors (wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_International_Hotel_and_Tower_%28Toronto%29), SSP (http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=6167)).

In fact there is an LED system which runs all the way from the bottom at street level to the top of the spire - if you look to the right of the photo just above it is the whitish line on the corner. The light should be a beacon on the skyline at night, a modern lighthouse.

Well.... uhm.. how do I explain it? It is right smack up against the most prestigious head office banking towers in the CBD; the location is breathtaking, and about as close to King and Bay Streets as is humanly possible. If they had wanted a big open field to build in so that the building really would stand out, they likely would have chosen a cow pasture north of the city. Its like the difference between a primo location on Wall Street or a nice big old parking lot in Jersey. One is desirable, the other is not.

And mine.

add my name onto that list. I have no idea how they do it! :dunno:

That's true if one's only interested in what the city looks like from a distance. From a pedestrian point of view, this went up in possibly the best spot in Toronto. Nowhere else in the country exists such a towering monument to the skyscraper as one finds in the 2 blocks in and around King and Bay. Trump made an already impressive intersection even more intense.

There are six 200 metre buildings within 2 blocks of here!

[{x}]
January 2nd, 2012, 02:17 AM
^^

:tiasd:

It's in the Financial District so it's right alongside Scotia Plaza and First Canadian Place.

Taken from Urban Toronto:

First Canadian Place - 978 ft. 72 floors
**Trump International Hotel & Residences - 908 ft. 60 floors
Scotia Plaza - 902 ft. 68 floors
http://urbantoronto.ca/forum/showthread.php/9157-400-foot-List

Even though Trump is a tiny bit taller than Scotia on paper, Trump has a spire while First Canadian Place and Scotia are "boxes," which is why they seem taller. Also, Trump is a long skinny building; the towers surrounding it are much wider and have more floor area

Why not? Every other building in the world does. If spires were not counted, there would be about half the number of buildings in the Supertall section than there are now.
Cities that suddenly now have "supertalls" would no longer have them.

I look at it in terms of the surrounding buildings and approach the issue from that perspective.

If the buildings that surround the Trump tower relied on spires for their height, then it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say that they are of a similar height. The BMO & Scotiabank towers don't do that though.. They genuinely look to be much taller than the Trump tower. The Trump tower is like a smaller brother holding up a hockey stick, beside them.

So my point really is: If all the towers in the area were holding hockey sticks, it would be fair to compare their heights with the spires included. I just don't want to end up in the situation where you have to say "The Trump tower is pretty much as tall as the bmo & scotiabank towers" cause when you look at the skyline that statement sounds like a bunch of crap.

I think it's only the antenna that makes 282 m. It's better to change the height to 236 m (roof), since it's not basically a proper spire. In the photos it's apparent that the building is way shorter than scotia plaza and only the ugly antenna that makes it taller.

Scotiaplaza is still the tallest in that section :)

Can you imagine the guy who paid millions of dollars for the penthouse...
I think I'll sit out on my private deck and enjoy some sun...
What??? Hello people in Scotia plaza who can "look down" on me...
My Real Estate agent told me this building is taller than that Scotia tower ... Dam!

looks like a tiny guy is waiting for the bus and two huge bullies looking for a easy fight standing behind him.

The person who paid for the penthouse doesn't actually sit out on the balcony - he has someone who does it for him!

Odds of it being done this Saturday look slim.. Two whole sides of the top are yet to be clad. The lighting up the corner isn't done. The logo isn't up there. Balcony isn't done..

If he announces it "complete" it will only be internally, and definitely not the sky lobby or the penthouse...

Nice tower, but its funny how a 282 m tower doesn't really make an impact on the skyline. I mean could be the centerpiece for almost any city... anyway congrats T.O. for this new building.

It's true. There aren't too many cities in the world where you build a 282 m building and it gets lost in the skyline. Makes you realize how big that CBD is.

for me it is a 230m Building, but it would still stand out an almost any city.

Nice tower, but its funny how a 282 m tower doesn't really make an impact on the skyline.

That's because it's really skinny and has a long spire among larger adjacent buildings with higher roofs.

Hotels don't pick locations so that people on SSC can get nice shots of their building in the skyline, they pick locations that are centrally located to businesses, attractions, shopping, etc. appealing to their client base. Trump Hotel and the people who bought condos want a location in the financial district. This lot is about as good as you can get.

It has unfortunately no impact on the skyline, and I don't understand why this one is still 282 meters. Change this to 236 meters, that's its real height.
