View Full Version : MINNEAPOLIS - Target Field (39,504)
El Mariachi April 19th, 2010, 11:27 PM Critiques are few, the food sucks, the beer choices suck, and there are not enough mens rooms. At least in our section.
loved the pictures, but was curious why you thought the beer choices suck there? Nothing spectacular, but then again---how many stadiums really boast great beer lists to begin with?
Bud, Bud Light, Bud Select, Bud Light Lime, Bud Light Wheat, Michelob Golden Draft, Michelob Golden Draft Light, Michelob Ultra, Michelob AmberBock, Rolling Rock, Shock Top, O’Doul’s Amber, Miller Lite, Coors Light, Miller Genuine Draft, MGD 64 Finnegans, Shell’s Seasonal, Summit Extra Pale Ale, Summit Seasonal, Grainbelt Premium, Grainbelt Light, Leinie’s Original, Leinie’s Honey Weiss, Leinie’s Summer Shandy, Lanshark Lager, Guinness, Heineken, Heineken Light, Stella, Corona, Dos Equis, Samuel Adams, and Amstel Light.
And from what I heard, the food selection there is pretty good as well.
Benn April 20th, 2010, 04:57 AM I wonder if it isn't just up on the skyline deck where his seats were. Most of that deck is club seating, and space for concessions seemed limited. On the main level (and to an extent the upper level) I would expect a much better selection.
mrakbaseball April 23rd, 2010, 12:35 AM I'd say PNC is definitely flashier.
Target Field was built with such tight constraints that there's no room for fancy spiral ramps, ferris wheels, amusement areas...none of that.
IMO, it's the first ballpark, not mallpark, to be built in a while.
Ballparks are definitely better than mallparks.

minneapolis-uptown May 12th, 2010, 11:41 PM yeah i went there today. had front row tickets above the dugout. great game and great stadium
St.PauliBoy June 10th, 2010, 08:09 PM I just went there for a game and can attest to you that its a great place to see baseball....and has a great view of Minneapolis. It's a bit cramped but what can you expect of a stadium that was built to be so intimate.
Everyone's tastes are objective, but I think it deserves to be up there considered as one of the top tier in baseball.

I was here a few weeks ago with some family who lives in Bloomington and at the time I definitely put it in my top 5. After a few weeks I now tie it at number one. It probably has the best view in all of baseball.
I used to have Camden Yards as the number one view, but after they built that awful hotel it dropped down considerably.
Benn August 22nd, 2010, 06:36 AM Finally got to a game at TF, Uncle, Aunt and Cousin were in town and had an extra seat, for the White Sox game a couple days ago. Turns out they were home plate box (above the field level club seats) behind the twins dugout and had passes to the Metropolitan club, which is pretty swanky. And at least from those finer (and spendier vantages) it seemed pretty close to perfect. I will have to get some bleacher and 300 level seats before making final judgment, most parks are great when you are fifteen rows behind the dugout. Leg room was decidedly better than the dome and the plaza is beautiful, nice scoreboard too. And I don't get the complaints about food and beer, on the main concourse at any rate there were two beer of Minnesota stands that had a wide array, probably 15 different brews from the state. And there were a bunch of Kromarczyk's (or however you spell it) stands serving up what have to be the best brats and Polish sausages in the majors. They also had Murray's (probably THE steakhouse in Minneapolis) steak sandwiches and Walleye at various stands that looked good, but pricey ($10.50 and $12 respectively).
The Metropolitan club is really interesting in that a lot of seats have passes, but outdoor and indoor seating with a view is limited, so they charge a $5 a person fee to sit down (and have in seat food service if one wants) which seems very odd. Extending past the foul pole in the club there is a standing room terrace area sort of adjacent to the bar with a good view of the field, that they don't charge you to use. The booze prices oddly enough were pretty reasonable in the club, more in line with a downtown bar. than a ballpark. On the concourse I had grain belt tall bottle for $7 and a 12 oz Summit EPA was $6.50, while in the Metropolitan club an 8 oz Bombay on the Rocks was $9, which is pretty good for that much gin. Summit was $6 up there if I remember right. The food menu looked good but pretty spendy. The model of the Park was on display outside of the club, which is really impressive and if you look carefully one can still spot Goldy, Waldo and Mr. T.
Getting to see Thome Walk off in the tenth was probably the coolest part of the evening though.
ryebreadraz August 25th, 2010, 05:30 AM The Dodgers are tentatively scheduled to visit Target Field next year. If they do, I'm definitely going to make the trip. The place looks awesome on TV and I'd love to check it out in person.
Schnauzer 1 August 25th, 2010, 10:34 PM I've been to several games at TF and for one of them I sat in what could be argued as perhaps the worst seats in the main grandstand: The highest (300 level) section, farthest down the left field line. I have also sat in great seats on the first level, right behind third base, and several places in between.
I enjoyed every location and I could almost say I enjoyed the BAD seats the most (not because they were flat out better, but because it was such a good surprise). The 'worse' your seats, the better the view. Target Field is a great experience.
I haven't sat in any of the outfield seats yet so I'll have to reserve judgement on those.
For one early May game, I sat in the last row of the first level. Since the second level juts out so far, I found it to have a bit of a cramped feeling. Although there were TV monitors hanging under the second deck, I couldn't see the main scoreboard due to the obstruction and I missed being able to see all the stats they put up there. As luck would have it (for me), not only were there a couple rain showers, but it was an early season game and I could feel the heaters doing their thing. Even when I was sitting in my least favorite seats, I stull lucked out. I literally had to shed a layer of jacket to not overheat, and I never felt a rain drop despite a couple showers being strong enough to send some people to the concourse.
B'moreOrioles August 26th, 2010, 05:21 PM The views of this new stadium are truly top-notch!
Calvin W September 13th, 2010, 12:10 PM One of very few ball parks I would actually want to watch a game at.
mrakbaseball September 14th, 2010, 06:00 AM I don't like the overhang in RF, it's too forced and phony. Reminds me of the unfortunate RF setup at Citi Field. Other than that, it seems to be a tremendous ballpark.

Not only that, the raised seating obstructs the CF view of the adjacent seats.

Phony? Meaning its real at another park?

Benn September 17th, 2010, 05:02 AM They really should have worked out the joint of those two areas a little better. Allowing fairly seriously obstructed views seems to be a theme in Populous parks as of late with these bleachers, Yankee mk III ect. One of the few faults with TF, but they are certainly there if you look for them.
mrakbaseball September 17th, 2010, 05:19 AM Phony? Meaning its real at another park?
No, it's a quirk for the sake of being quirky. Nothing more.

As far as items that affect the playing field: Turner Field, Kauffman Stadium, Citizen's Bank, Busch Stadium, GABP, PNC, Coors Field, Dodger Stadium, Camden Yards, Rogers Centre, Tropicana, Progressive Field, US Cellular, Angel Stadium, Safeco, Yankee Stadium. . .
You could add Wrigley, Fenway, Sun-Life, etc. as these parks' quirks were developed over years, or necessary evils of the stadium. They weren't purpose built with meaningless quirks.

You're joking right? They all have quirks. All quirks are meaningless and could be corrected. Ivy is a necessity? Unnecessarily close stands to foul lines built on purpose to create angles? Dodger Stadium and US Cellular may be the only correct answers. Of Course Dodger Stadium recently create one behind the plate.

I forgot to mention another one, Rogers Centre in Toronto. The stadium formerly known as Skydome has an artificial surface, perfectly symmetrical dimensions, and a OF fence with a uniform height. No quirks.

buytheredcar January 9th, 2011, 02:08 AM Is this really that great?
The outfield seats are horrible.
Looks bad on tv with so much wall.
There are weird angles through the whole stadium, inside and out.
Im probably in the minority but not a fan of the limestone.
The proportions of the decks are a mess.
Way better than the Metrodome though.
FastFerrari January 10th, 2011, 02:46 AM Great looking stadium Twins.
FloridaKnight January 11th, 2011, 01:20 AM It boggles my mind how stadiums built today are still being constructed with obstructed seats. Is that a calculated architectural decision during the planning process that some fans will just be shit out of luck for getting a view? I do love the limestone construction though...outside of that, nothing special here.
aimcbt January 29th, 2011, 06:32 PM ...as others have mentioned, why create unnecessarily bad sight lines? I've never been a fan of the "retro" look in ballparks with their artificially created quirks. Unless you've got a site that constrains the overall design of the ballpark, it's not necessary for those quirks to exist. And then, they one up themselves by planting those trees in CF which now I understand are being removed due to player concerns about losing sight of the ball.
I'd love to watch a game there. I saw one at the dome a long time ago and was amazed at how bad a place for baseball it was. You guys now have a really nice place. Just don't buy tix in the outfield. Or along the RF deck. This is similar to Kaufman in KC...you spend the entire game with your head turned left. It may be aesthetically pleasing (even that's debatable) but it's no good for the fan.

I think it's about as far from "retro" as a park can get.

Target Field was built on a parcel of land roughly the size of Wrigley Field's. The plaza was built over I-394.

The outfield isn't so bad -- no different than when I sat in the upper bleachers at Tiger Stadium. The only real problem is that raised section of seats that hangs over the wall and obstructs other sections; it should be removed.

maybe if you're hitting it isn't "the same thing". At Coors you have many deep layers of trees leading to a back wall at least 50 feet behind the fence that's covered in ivy. At Target you had the trees planted like fence posts in a very narrow planter-box space between the fence and the back, wall with virtually no depth in between the fence/trees/back wall--likely much more distracting than the more natural-looking deep-set, multi-hued layers of foliage in Denver.
Mplsuptown May 20th, 2011, 08:09 PM http://www.kansascity.com/2011/05/19/2888340/target-field-in-minneapolis-designed.html Target Field, the Minnesota Twins ballpark designed by Kansas City-based Populous, has been named Sports Facility of the Year by a national sports business publication.
The ballpark in downtown Minneapolis, which has its own light-rail station, opened last season. The award was announced at a ceremony in New York by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Daily.
In winning the honor, Target Field topped three other Populous-designed sports facilities, including the Arrowhead Stadium renovation project in Kansas City. The others were Amway Center, home of the NBA’s Orlando Magic, and Consol Energy Center, home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins.
New Meadowlands Stadium, designed by 360 Architecture of Kansas City and the home of the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets, also was a finalist.
Street & Smith’s honor was the latest accolade for Target Field. It was named the top stadium experience in all of professional sports last year by ESPN the Magazine and was named 2010 Ballpark of the Year by Ballpark Digest.
“We knew from the outset it would be a great project,” Earl Santee, Populous’ senior principal, said in a statement. “It’s nice to receive validation as the best sports facility in the country, one that is a model to be revered and studied” for future stadium development.

Well damn with that field, I'd wholly expect it to win too. All of those others have completely uninteresting and uninspiring designs for new stadiums & arenas today.
mrakbaseball July 8th, 2011, 01:09 AM We in Minnesota did however end up with kelly green seats, and for no good reason that I can tell other than they mesh with the ash-backed club seats better than blue (the dominant team color) would have. But that is probably my biggest gripe with the park (the right field overhang is a little annoying to I suppose, should have either cantilevered the whole thing with bleachers or just left it flush), so all in all pretty great.
Perhaps blue and red seats would have been a better choice, though that might invoke memories of County Stadium.
Benn July 8th, 2011, 04:48 AM Or Metropolitan, I think you mean, County is in Milwaukee

I don't know what color Metropolitan Stadium's seats were. I know County Stadium was in Milwaukee and had red and dark blue seats. County's old color scheme would fit in with the Twins' colors though.
Benn July 9th, 2011, 08:49 AM Sure would, I just wasn't sure why you had referenced the Brewers old stadium, but Metropolitan's were all blue if I remember correctly, not a good looking stadium for the record.
