City Hall acts to rid area of illegal foreign workers

Registration Department
IT would seem that the phenomenon of the illegal foreign workers, which used to be synonymous with Petaling Street, is nearly gone for good.
This was the observation during yesterday's joint operation to rid Petaling Street of illegal foreign workers by Kuala Lumpur City Hall and various enforcement agencies - including police, Immigration, the National Registration Department and Ikatan Relawan Rakyat Malaysia.
This may have also been because yesterday was the deadline for traders in Petaling Street to give up their foreign helpers or risk losing their trading licences.
The deadline was set by City Hall on May 7, as a final notice for the Petaling Street traders. The Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders Association had also issued similar notices to its 773 members to give up their
foreign helpers by June 1.
City Hall petty traders management and development department director Ramly Othman said yesterday's operation rounded up 43 foreigners.
Five were held for not carrying documents while the rest were taken in for working illegally at the stalls.
Those detained will be investigated by the Immigration Department and NRD.
Over the weekend, City Hall staff had observed 23 stalls operating with illegal foreign workers during the day while 13 did so at night.
"We have a team checking on the activities of the traders in the area to achieve City Hall's target of zero foreign workers. We will be making this permanent by setting up an enforcement beat base here," said Ramly.
"Once we have ascertained that the traders have committed the offence of employing foreign workers, we will take action by cancelling their trading permits," he said, adding that City Hall's bylaws for hawkers and wholesale market traders doesn't allow foreigners to hold trading licences.
There are currently 773 licensed hawker-traders in Petaling Street, 1,348 in Chow Kit, 932 in Pudu and 448 in Selayang.
The team of some 120 men in uniform also found 26 traders guilty of committing various offences in Petaling Street.
City Hall also issued summonses to those operating without trading permits (7), hiring stall assistants without City Hall's permission (8) and for not having their trading permits at their premises (11).
Eight traders also had their goods confiscated by City Hall's enforcement officers.This year alone, City Hall had
confiscated goods belonging to 1,098 traders from Petaling Street, Chow Kit, Pudu and Selayang.
City Hall had announced early last month that there would be a major clampdown on illegal foreign workers and had identified
four areas, Petaling Street, Chow Kit, Selayang and Pudu as hotspots with many illegal traders and stall helpers.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bustling commercial area Jalan Masjid India may be facing a challenge from more upmarket commercial areas like Jalan Bukit Bintang but it remains the most expensive commercial street in the Klang Valley, and possibly the country.
The veritable hub of Indian goods and delicacies has seen huge, accelerated development over the past decade.
Real estate experts generally agree that the prices and rental of the shoplots here are rising, with additional gains from the renovated and separately rented-out rear spaces.
“We recently conducted a rental survey and were amazed that they can fetch rentals of between RM20,000 to RM30,000 per month. Reflecting a rate of RM23 to RM36 psf per month, they are comparable to those within the nearby established shopping complexes such as Semua House, Pertama Complex and Sogo,” said Anthony Chua, director of KGV-Lambert Smith Hampton.
He added that shoplots on the ground floor of Malayan Mansion and Selangor Mansion, among the oldest flats in KL, can command prices of RM1.5 million to RM1.7 million for a size of 800 to 900 sq ft.

Meanwhile, rentals appear to have settled around at RM40,000 to RM50,000 per month for a 4-storey shop/office building, depending on the type and nature of the business, said Govin Bala, principal of GDS Properties.
Ground floors average at RM25,000 up to RM40,000 with first floors commanding RM5,000, second floors commanding RM3,000 and third floors fetching RM2,000, while renovated rear portions of the shops fetch around RM10,000 to RM15,000 a month depending on occupancy sizes, said Govin.
“Jalan Masjid India is a recession-proof location for various reasons -- there are limited shops here and these have their captive market. The shops are never vacant and are always in demand and hardly any shops are closed. They are also well supported by the Putra and Star LRT lines, which bring in the pedestrian crowd,” he said.
Meanwhile, Carey Real Estate Sdn Bhd director Nixon Paul believes that Jalan Masjid India will remain the country's most expensive commercial street for the next decade or so and values will continue rising although at a slower rate.
Govin and Nixon believe that the street will continue to draw the crowds, thanks to its niche offerings and the area’s closely-knit community.

it's simply known as bangunan ibu pejabat KTMB... completed in 1917,it was known back then as F. M. S Railway Administration Headquarters

it's not dirty and dull,,..that the way the building has look since 1917,it's the same with bangunan abdul samad,masjid jamek,etc.....it's has never change...it will be ridiculous to change the facade, it's part of our nation's history....
