Estadio Monumental "Lolo Fernandez" (Universitario de Deportes) in Lima - Peru, has more than 1000 private suites. I'm not sure exactly how many. Can anybody help with that and a picture??

Those seats under the stairs in Bernabéu are strange. Those boxes can not be connected directly with VIP facilities, can they?

And then the new blocks in the corners: they simply take away the view for a number of people!

I got the data and some pictures of Estadio Monumental U in Lima, Peru(from Gremco, the construction company that buit it)

The data I got is 1146 suites (with 9 or 18 seats), distribuited in 7 stories buildings around the stadium, except in the north stand which has 6 stories and in the south stand which has 5 stories (because o a terrace above 5th floor), and a total capacity of 80000 people.

Still no Old Trafford on the list, which is quite remiss as it was the first stadium in the UK (and possibly beyond) that was designed specifically to accommodate 'executive' facilities. I'm sure the figure quoted earlier is the press facilities number. I've sat behind the press box at OT and that number is about right.

www.ManUtdZone.com lists the capacity (spectators) of all the boxes as 1,000 - which is a bit of a round figure to be trustworthy, but if you subtract the fairly specific section-by-section capacities it lists (74,500) from the official overall capacity (76,212), you get a figure of 1,712.

To get the actual number of boxes, you'd need to divide this number by the average box capacity (which would be difficult to obtain). i.e.:

[Ave = 6]: 1,712/6 = c.285
[Ave = 8]: 1,712/8 = 214

Given that this average box capacity is quite an arbitrary figure, defined essentially by the architects and the club, perhaps it is more helpful to gague this question in terms of overall capacity of these facilities, not just the number of (essentially) dividing lines between each one.

Rantanamo, using this figure, might it be possible that the Azteca's 856 relates to number of people therein, not number of boxes? Like you, I'm suspicious about that figure.

it is not th capacity of the boxes

Auteca had 631 palcos betwee 1st and 2nd tier (capacity: 10-16 Business seats)
for the WC 1986 they added 225 new ones (distance to the picth 38m and the altitude difference is 14m)
so Azteca has got 856 boxes

Yes I am a United fan and I hope this doesn't come across as me being biased (well, too biased :)), it's more that I have a better knowledge of OT than any other ground as a result.

I'm going to United v AC Milan on Tuesday, so I'll have a go at counting the boxes, which may be easier said than done!

According to your Azteca figures:

865/4 = c.216 boxes per level (assuming 2x pitch length = 1/2 circumference)

It sounds possible, but maybe a little cramped. Do you know how many spectators these 865 boxes combined can accommodate?

if you just ask somebody from the stadium management etc :D

total capacity of the boxes at Azteca is 13.843
-Each box seat section in the 2nd and 3rd level has a total area of 11.79 m2
not so big actually (+14m² is more common)
-Box seat sections on the first level have a total area of 11.86 m2

Well I don't happen to know anyone in stadium management, so I'll have to just go with the data I can find on the web (the esmas.com page is interesting). I'm happy to take it all at face value, but I will apply any rigour to the figures put forward. QED...

For example:
13,843/865 = c.16 people per box on average - in an area @ c.11.8m²

Using my calculation of (on average) 216 boxes per level:

Looking at the above photo, and basing the pitch dimansions on a fairly standard 115m x 75m, I'm estimating the box level is about 50m back from the touchline, you could conlude the circumference as this:

2 x pitch lengths
+2 x pitch widths
+Pi x (2 x 50m)

= (2 x 115m) + (2 x 75m) + (3.14 x 100m)

= 330m + 150m + 314m

= 794m circumference

794m/216 = 3.67m average frontage

@c.11.8m²/3.67m = c.3.2m depth.

It's a little cramped, but I guess the numbers add up. I'm happier with it now there's been a little bit of science applied to it.

Attention if you look on the numbers of my site http://www.footballtemples.com (http://www.fussballtempel.net().

Like explained in the "Description of table" link there are two cases:

- if there is only one number in the VIP or VIP/BS column it means total number of VIP seats (no separation in box seats/honour/business seats, as this information was not available)

- if there are two numbers separated by a slash the first number is the number of seats in boxes and the second is number of honour/business seats (open comfort seats on the stands)

In no case on my site the number of boxes is stated, only the number of seats.

Last night, I counted about 25 boxes beneath the East Stand T2 (not the quad areas), in line with the short side of the pitch (c.75m). This gives an average frontage of around 3m, similar to the Azteca figure.

Using this figure for the circumference (which I don't think is too far off the circumference at the Azteca) of the ground behind the 1st tier and between T2 and T3 of the North Stand, this implies a figure of 794m + 115m frontage.

909m frontage / 3m average box width = 303 boxes.

Using the capacity of 1,712 for this seating area, this implies an average capacity per box of 5-6 people.

BTW, 303 boxes (if you accept the maths in getting to that figure) would put Old Trafford in at 5th in the list:

Here are some virtual tours of the suites at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the stadium was built in 1972 with only a few suites, over the years more and more have been added. The latest suites to be added are the dugout suites at the top of the lower bowl, only 40 rows from the field. I have personally attended a game in the "Executive Level Suites" which are the original suites, they were recently renovated.

Suites at Boston's Fenway Park were running well over $200,000/season and about $6,000 for a single game. I believe the most expensive suites Lucas Oil Stadium (the new Colts stadium) are going to run upwards of $200,000 a season. that would factor out to $20,000 a game, pending playoffs. Most of the suites will be in the $70,000-150,000 price range I believe. After the Fedex Field renovations are complete the mose expensive suites there could definately be upwards of $200,000, I'm sure some of the cowboys suites will be like this was well in their new stadium. I have no idea what the boxes at Anfield run, but I doubt they get that high. We Americans are unfortunately the kings of obscenely overpriced seats.

but this was calculated for 1996 Turkey

There is a glass-fronted box/suite level encircling the entire 1st tier (sides, ends, corners) almost seamlessley (only the Police monitoring station, the broadcast TV studio and the MUTV studio break the continuity. A similar configuration exists behind the 2nd tier, along the North Stand only.

Matherto, you are correct that behind the glass-fronted areas (North and South stands) are large banqueting areas (I've been in both) where guests eat before the game and then walk to their cushioned seat in the stand area (within the tier). If you notice on your way from table to viewing seat, there is a small, private area immediately behind the glass along the length of the stands. Here are partitioned sections which seat diners who watch the game from their table. Just because they are not partioned off at the rear (from the wider banqueting area), it doesn't mean they can't be counted.

I stand by my earlier assessment - especially as you're counting areas within the Azteca where those who sit within them are actually sat 'outside', albeit on balconies of sorts. I don't think you can have it both ways

Perhaps a firmer definition between a 'box' and a 'suite' is needed

imostly it has got some rows infront of the glass facade for 10-18 persons

as you can see the RheinEnergie stadium has got a 2 floor high suit area with 2 rows infront of it

Are you counting arenas too? Because if you are this list is going to get a whole lot longer, as most large arenas in North America have between 40 and 160 suites (HSBC has 80, Staples Center has 160!).

I'm enjoying one here, they seat 12-18, as you can see they are in the middle section that circles the arena. Oh, and the roof was almost blown off the place last night when the Sabres tied the Rangers with 7 seconds left, then beat them in overtime to take a 3-2 series lead :banana:

The shear about of boxes in north western South American stadiums(Peru, Columbia, Ecuador) compaired to the rest of the world have always interested me. I'd guess that with so many alot of those using them are middle rather than upper/business class as they are elsewhere. Is it a tradision thing? fear of the masses etc?

Estadio Isidro Romero Carbo, in Guayaquil, Ecuador must also be near the top if you the one in peru.

MCI has 114, sorry I missed that. I would guess the O2 has about 100-120, but I don't know for sure, that list is just a start. Oh and I believe the 54 suites at AT&T includes the open suites, so 42 traditional suites, and the twelve in the lower level.

"club" seats are upscale seats in the general area. If you look at any US venue built in the last 15 years there will be some club seats, usually located along the sidelines mid-way up, often on their own seating level. Business seats and club seats are pretty comparable.

The club seats in the metrodome are sort of like lodge seats, in that they are on level with the suites, have a seating arrangement very similar to a super suite.

"Logde box" is sort of a loosely defined term. Think of them as a semiprivate seating, usually like an orchestra box. 4-8 seats, potentially with a small private lounge area, if not a larger shared lounge area and shared restrooms with the other lodge boxes and/or premium seating. These are very popular in College football and are becoming more common in american arenas (Iowa Events center has some true lodge boxes at the back edge of the lower level).

"Terrace Tables" are really only in the NBA as far as I know. Phoenix, Charlotte and Memphis all have a number of these seats. They are usually at the back edge of a level, and consist of 4-8 office chair like seats along a drink rail that may have a computer/flat panel tv ect.

All usually include climate controlled concourses that are usually carpeted or have terrazzo tile. All have wider padded seats, often done in leather. The later three usually include an attendant and/or in seat food service.

At the Melbourne Cricket Ground some millionaire put a spa looking over the stadium in his. But the usual ones just have plasma's, a waiter's kitchen, comfortable couhes and seats etc. But when you buy a private box, you buy the shell and you can customise it (as demonstrated) almost any way you want haha.

Yeah, I don't see that taking off here in North America either :) Most VIP suites are leased here anyway, not much customizing allowed.

Quite surprising to see only latin-american stadiums in the top 3. I expected north-american stadiums filling the top spots.

Considering its size, Camp Nou has very few suits at the moment.

South Americans have got mainly samll (look at Boca) palcos but also many. Just look at the stadiums :D

Nou Camp is one of the biggest disappointment. At the new foster renders i can't see new ones?!?

For the Arena list Williams Arena at U of Minnesota has 19 boxes, the new Chaifetz arena in St Louis will have 12, Thompson-Boling arena at U of Tennessee has 32 suites and 16 boxes.

Subiaco Oval in Perth, Western Australia has the following;
59 corporate Suites.
177 Private Open Boxes.

AAMI Stadium in Adelaide, South Australia has the following;
154 Open Facilities varying in size from 4 to 14 seats.
29 Enclosed Facilities varying in size from 8 to 12 seats.
27 Premier Facilities accommodating 14 people.
33 Superbox Suites acommodating up to 20 people.

Telstra Dome in Melbourne, Victoria has the following;
66 corporate Suites in size from 12 to 16 seats.
No idea how many in boxes or Medallion Club.

In Australia, Suites refer to the enclosed, fully catered rooms which are decked out in luxury. Boxes are a step down being semi-open to fully open but are still fully catered and the seating has greater comfort and area than the main seating and will often still be separate from the main seating by raised wall or a purpose built tier, they will seat 4 to 20.

I had heard a figure of about 300 that seemed plausable, but there is no that theres a thousand suites at Old Trafford. I don't know if that would be possible even if they were all four seat boxes.

I have just read that the Soccer City stadium will have 187 suites with 32 seats each. Then there will be 1 VVIP suite with 156 seats with an 1300 additional VIP seats reserved taking the total seating capacity to 102140.

Well if you are gonna call the little placos under the stairwells at the Bernabeau suites suites, the 6 sq m boxes at the Azteca suites, or the open boxes at the ABSA, then I think the 6 and 8 seat boxes here should probably count too. They are open air, but are semi enclosed, have their own LCD screens, in seat food sevice, on there own level ect. I kind of think this list would be more accaurate if the total number of suite seats was used instead, because a 4 seat box under a stair and 48 person full on suite are very different, although that number is much harder to find in many cases. But it's you're list so do what you want, If 37 is the number you feel is more accurate go ahead with it.

BTW the club seats are seperate from those, there will be 1,100 outdoor and 300 indoor for the record.

As i know all 241 palcos at bernabeu are behind glass.
Azteca has just small ones, but there are also suites.

Yeah these are sort of a fancier version of the ANZ ones as far as I can tell, it's hard to find a pic, there are some videos but that is it. So if that's how you are defining suite/Placo/Box or what have you as being fully enclosed private seating, then 37 is probably the accurate number for TCF

I have a few links from some clubs official web pages regarding hospitality that is offered by that club I have given links to the pages that say how many boxes they offer. How accurate those figures that I found are I don't know but my guess is that some are rounded up to the nearest 10. It also must be noted that many of these clubs will offer many over types of matchday hospitality. I have missed some because I couldn't find any figures.

I tried looking at a few clubs in France and Spain all I could find was the amount of boxes at El Madrigal (Villarreal C.F.) which has 30 boxes
23 of the boxes allows 16 people, 5 can have up 20 people and the remaining 2 can hold 12 people.

American Airlines Arena in Miami has 28, which seems abnormally low, especially for the NBA. But it has 78 open "loge" boxes, which are sort of an open suite with like 4 or 6 seats. Looks really weird next to the United Center and the Palace, but it's an interesting idea.

Forgive me if this has been addressed elsewhere...

In browsing worldstadiums.com regarding another matter I noticed for the first time a peculiarity: Not just 1 but 4 stadiums across Colombia, Peru and Ecuador that share a similar design, that being of tall, vertical walls of suites and/or shallow tiers above the conventional bowl. I'd seen this before but initially assumed it was 1, maybe 2 venues and merely a factor of site considerations. Clearly, however, this is a demi-cultural thing. So I'm curious, can anyone explain this move to me? Conventional wisdom is to feature as many seats as possible in prime seating areas, so this would run counter to that philosophy. Perhaps it's a way of creating size and character for otherwise smaller crowd conditions???

I don't know about new stadiums being built with this kind of design, but the fact is that this amount of suites were built because with the selling/rental of them, the club make the building of the stadium possible, since south american clubs aren't rich or well managed like european clubs...

as best i know that is the reason. The thing about SA football, is it can get really rowdy, the fans get into fights (more often than in Europe) and the police there aren't as good at stopping fights. most middle to upper class fans would rather pay a bit extra for security.

in football alot of fans tend to like being behind the goal, rather than on the sides. Better atmosphere etc. I know i few people who like the feeling of players coming towards them as they feel more intune with the game.

The reason was mentioned above, Suites or boxes are sold like houses, not like in Europe for the season, but for life, so they pay for the construction of the stadium. And you get al the accomodations like food and beer and better food (in Peru it is not allowed to sell beer in a stadium, except in the suites).

I think most countries / continents develop their own style of stadium. In the USA most college football stadiums follow the same principle as do NFL stadiums. In the UK right now the Derby County, Leicester City, Southampton, Middlesboro, Swansea and soon to be built Cardiff City stadium design is popular. Are the German World Cup 2006 stadiums so different from each other?

Unfortunately there is no number on wikipedia, but the total amount of seats in the boxes is 13'535. So I guess it could be more than 1000.

44,000 capacity Estadio Cuscatlan in El Salvador is similar with a massive wall of boxes. Capacity for the boxes is 3400 so a rough estimate would be 340 boxes.

I'm not sure about the number of the Olympiastadion Berlin but the official Hertha BSC site says:

VIP: 98 Logen, 15 Skyboxen, 4500 Business Seats

Mmmh, I saw this too after I postet the no. of the Hertha website and was a bit confused because these numbers are so different!

Another question, what are these "Club-Boxen" in the Lanxess Arena/Kölnarena in Cologne.

Looking at the renders, it seems not the whole middle tier are suites.
Business seats are also there.

And well, every new 30k+ stadium has more than Camp Nou :(

To be correct, that number would be the one from the new Tivoli currently under construction.

The current Tivoli - the old one, doesn't have any VIP boxes /Palcos or whatever you may call them. It doesn't even have any business seats. And for VIP catering there's a tent on the front, the opposite side of the stadiums main stand. And we're proud our VIP's therefore mostly just eat a Bratwurst like all the ordinary people during half time intermission.
And the official name of both stadia is just "Tivoli", not "Tivoli-Stadion" by the way.
(Probably because the Tivoli here in Aachen is not just an ordinary soccer stadium it's the Tivoli. There is a difference and interestingly for over a 101 years now, soccer here in Aachen is being played "on the Tivoli", not: "in the stadium Tivoli" or "in the Tivoli", in german: "auf dem Tivoli" (originally it used to be only the soccer field there, before it was turned or expanded into a stadium). So if you played or watched soccer in the stadium Tivoli or '"Stadion Tivoli", you would officially probably be in Innsbruck in the "Tivoli-Neu" which is much newer then our Tivoli (even the old one there the "Stadion Tivoli" was built much later) or you might be in Belgium, in the "stade de Tivoli" in La Louvière.)
