History
The current Slovenian Armed Forces are descended from the Territorial Defense of the Republic Slovenia (Teritorialna obramba Republike Slovenije; TORS), which was formed in 1968 as a paramilitary organization in the former Yugoslav republic of Slovenia. The main objectives of this organisation were to support the Yugoslav National Army (JLA) and to conduct guerilla operations in the event of an invasion.

When Slovenia declared its independence in the midst of the Yugoslav Civil Wars in 1991, the TORS and the Slovenian police formed the majority of forces engaging the Yugoslav People's Army during the Ten-Day War. And the Slovenian Armed Forces were formally established in 1993 as part of the reorganisation of the TORS.

NATO Membership
As part of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Slovenia was never a member of the Warsaw Pact. Today, the foreign policy priority of NATO membership drives Slovenia's defense reorganization. Once many countries lifted the arms embargo on Slovenia in 1996, the country embarked on a military procurement program to bolster its status as a NATO candidate and to aid its transformation into a mobile force. Active in the SFOR deployment in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia is also a charter member of Partnership for Peace and a regular participant in PfP exercises. The United States provides bilateral military assistance to Slovenia, including through the International Military Education and Training (IMET) program, the State Partnership Program (aligned with Colorado), and the EUCOM Joint Contact Team Program.

Slovenia formally joined NATO in March 2004.[1] The transition of her armed forces from a primarily conscript-based territorial defense organization to a professional force structure have the ultimate goal of creating NATO-interoperable combat units able to operate on an even par with units from other NATO armies. Implementation of interoperability objectives as determined by the Planning and Review Process (PARP) and the Individual Partnership Program (IPP) as part of Slovenia's PfP participation proceeds. Slovenia's elite units already train with and are integrated into international units including NATO members--for example as part of SFOR and on Cyprus. Its elite mountain troops will be assigned to the Multinational Land Force peacekeeping battalion with Italy, Hungary, and Croatia. Slovenia hosted its first PfP exercise in 1998--"Cooperative Adventure Exchange"--a multinational disaster-preparedness command post exercise involving almost 6,000 troops from 19 NATO and PfP member nations.

Slovenian soldiers are a part of international forces serving in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. They have also served in Cyprus and the Golan Heights as a part of UNFICYP and UNDOF respectively.

Valuk Light Armoured Vehicle, Slovenia
The Valuk Light Armoured Vehicle, manufactured by Sistemska Tehnika of Slovenia, is in full-scale production following a series of competitive performance tests carried out by the Slovenian Army. Contracts have been placed for the supply of 85 of the 6x6 wheeled Valuk for the Slovenian Army. The first 30 have been delivered.

The VALUK is manufactured under a licence manufacturing agreement with the Austrian company, Steyr Daimler Puch Spezialfahrzueg (now part of General Dynamics Land Systems - Europe) and is based on the Pandur vehicle.

STALKER ARMOURED SCOUT RECONNAISSANCE VEHICLE (ARSV)

Sistemska Tehnika, with Rafael of Israel, have developed the Stalker Armoured Reconnaissance and Scout Vehicle (ARSV), based on the Valuk with the Rafael Remote Control Weapon Station (RCWS) and a surveillance system based on Rafael's Toplite day/night targeting and acquisition system. Toplite includes 3rd generation FLIR, CCD TV and laser rangefinder and is capable of both manual and automatic target tracking. A Battle Management System (BMS) can slave the RCWS to the Toplite targeting system.

WEAPON STATION

The vehicle is equipped with a stabilised Overhead Weapon Station supplied by the Rafael Israel Armament Development Authority. The Overhead Weapon Station OWS-25 is armed with a 25 mm Bushmaster Cannon and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun.

The gunner can survey, acquire and track a target, aim and fire from inside the turret with a closed hatch or in a head-out position. The gunner's station is equipped with a day and night periscope sighting and observation system. The day periscope sight has a unity magnification window with a collimated aiming circle and an 8x magnification sight with a ballistic reticle. The night periscope sight has a unity magnification window and an image intensifier x7.5 magnification passive night elbow.

The weapon station can also be fitted with externally mounted TOW long-range anti-tank guided missiles.

SELF-PROTECTION

The standard armoured protection is rated to withstand 7.62 mm armour piercing rounds through a full 360 degrees, and 12.7 mm armour piercing rounds over a 30 degree frontal arc.

Rafael has supplied a passive add-on ceramic armour kit for the Valuk which provides 12.7 mm AP round protection over the full 360 degrees.

The crew door at the rear of the vehicle is equipped with a periscope sight. The crew is protected against anti-tank and anti-personnel mines and a full nuclear, biological and chemical warfare protection system is fitted. The crew compartment is fitted with an automatic fire detection and fire fighting system with 3 fire sensors and three Halon 1301 gas containers.

A version of the Valuk has been built with a rear ramp with an emergency door instead of two doors. The vehicle can also be equipped with a capstan type cable winch.

ENGINE

The Valuk is equipped with a Steyr 612.35 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine and a hydrodynamically controlled automatic transmission with a torque converter and lock-up clutch with 5 forward and 1 reverse gear. The engine provides a power to weight ratio of 20.4 kW per ton.

The 6x6 wheels have automatic tyre pressure regulation with a central tyre inflation system. The independent suspension system has telescopic shock absorbers on each wheel. There are coil springs on the first and second axle and torsion bars on the third axle.

The drive train and steering linkages are protected within the hull of the vehicle.

MOBILITY

The turning radius is 8.5 metres and the maximum speed is typically 110 kilometres per hour. The ground clearance is 430 mm. The vehicle can negotiate natural and man made obstacles such as trenches up to 1.5 metres wide, vertical obstacles to 0.5 metres high, gradients of 70 per cent and side slope to 40 per cent. The Valuk can ford water to a depth of 1.2 metres. The combat weight is 13,300 kilograms

Slovenski vojaki v Afganistanu prispeli do strmoglavljenega letala

Pripadniki Enote za specialno delovanje (ESD) Slovenske vojske, ki delujejo v operaciji Isafa, so v ponedeljek, 7. februarja, zjutraj z zavezniškimi helikopterji cougar prispeli na kraj nesreče potniškega letala B 737 zasebne letalske družbe Kam Air iz Afganistana. Letalo je v snežnem metežu iz do sedaj neznanih razlogov trčilo v 3071 metrov visoko goro približno 30 kilometrov jugovzhodno od Kabula. Večina delov letala je posejanih na širšem območju vrha gore, del pa jih je padel prek strme vzhodne stene, ki je visoka približno 1000 metrov.

Upgrading of T-55 Tanks
The Russian, Polish and Slovak variants of T-55 are the most widely extended types of tanks in the world. At least 30,000 are still in use which makes this tank the most grateful subject for upgrading. Its combat capacities can be easily increased also up to 100%.

Its robust construction and simple maintenance in a combination with upgrading provides an efficient and realiable combat vehicle which can handle the toughest tasks of modern comprehension of the use of armoured systems. As all mounted upgrading elements are of a modular design, avoiding additional alterations of a tank structure, they can be easily replaced with modern parts prolonging their life by at least ten to fifteen years, retaining the level typical for the second generation of tanks.

In December 2006, Slovenia placed an order for 136 Patria AMV vehicles in four variants. One of the variants will be fitted with Patria's new NEMO 120mm smoothbore turreted advanced mortar system. Other variants include one armed with the Rafael Spike anti-armour missile. The vehicles will be manufactured by a joint venture company to be set up by Patria and Slovenian companies Gorenje and Rotis and will be delivered between2008 and 2013.

The Slovenian Ministry of Defence has today signed agreements with Rotis and Patria covering the procurement of 138 Patria AMV 8x8 armored vehicles as well as Patria Nemo 120 mm single-barrel mortars to the Slovenian Army. The total value of the program is about € 278 million.

Together with Patria and Rotis, Gorenje will also be involved in the production. According to Mr Jorma Wiitakorpi, CEO and President of Patria, the company offset agreements will bring great benefits to the Slovenian economy as a whole.

F2000 new standard combat rifle for the Slovenian Armed Forces.

Leading manufacturer of small arms FN Herstal in Belgium is pleased to announce that the Ministry of Defence in Slovenia has recently adopted the F2000 Tactical Assault Rifle and Grenade Launcher for all its Armed Forces. Deliveries will be completed in the course of next year.

The F2000 won the competition after one year of successful tests carried out according to NATO standards by the Slovenian MoD.

The F2000 Assault Rifle 5.56 mm calibre, which combines innovative features, modern technology and top quality components, is short in length, light in weight, modular and capable of taking a variety of accessories to meet the diverse operational requirements facing modern military units today and in the future.

Po pisanju Dela in govorjenu Kahla Ehjavca se nam obetajo nova letala :lol: !

Ljubljana – Ministrstvo za obrambo je predlagalo vladi, naj potrdi osem novih razvojnih projektov, ki bodo v naslednjih štirih letih stali državo okoli štirinajst milijonov evrov. S približno milijonom evrov letno naj bi država pomagala pri razvoju majhnih brezpilotnih letal, elektromagnetnih in akustičnih senzorjev, agregatov in trenažerju oklepnih mehaniziranih enot. Čeprav so vsaj majhna brezpilotna letala načrtovana tudi kot oprema Slovenske vojske, pa tokrat ne gre za nakupe, temveč za razvoj tehnologij, pojasnjuje vodja sektorja za raziskave in razvoj ministrstva za obrambo Franc Pojbič, ki pravi, da s takšnim razvojem povečujejo konkurenčnost slovenskemu gospodarstvu.

Ministrstvo za obrambo predlaga, da bi ukinili dvanajst razvojnih projektov, dvema povišali porabo denarja ter začeli osem novih razvojnih projektov, med njimi država za tri napoveduje kar po štiri milijone evrov v štirih letih. »Osredotočili smo se na tri večje projekte. To seveda ne pomeni, da bodo v resnici lahko porabili toliko denarja. Dosežki v posamezni fazi bodo pogoj za nadaljevanje projekta in dodaten denar,« pojasnjuje Franc Pojbič iz ministrstva za obrambo, ki opozarja, da morebitni nakupi opreme niso neposredno povezani z investicijami v razvoj, kajti ta je dolgoročne narave in zato ne moremo govoriti o sočasnih dejanjih. Rezultati razvoja pa bodo uporabljani za nabave, kjer bo to možno, pojasnjuje Pojbič.

Leading manufacturer of small arms FN Herstal in Belgium is pleased to announce that the Ministry of Defence in Slovenia has recently adopted the F2000 Tactical Assault Rifle and Grenade Launcher for all its Armed Forces. Deliveries will be completed in the course of next year.

The F2000 won the competition after one year of successful tests carried out according to NATO standards by the Slovenian MoD.

The F2000 Assault Rifle 5.56 mm calibre, which combines innovative features, modern technology and top quality components, is short in length, light in weight, modular and capable of taking a variety of accessories to meet the diverse operational requirements facing modern military units today and in the future.

Posao kupnje ratnog broda od Ruske Federacije trebao bi se realizirati do kraja godine, a Slovenci planiraju i nabavu ruske vojne opreme u sklopu programa podmirenja klirinškog duga

Ministarstvo obrane Republike Slovenije razmatra mogućnost kupovine novog ratnog broda. Po neslužbenim informacijama, Slovenija brod kupuje od Rusije, a bit će dug oko 50 metara.
Točan tip broda, dimenzije i vrijednost, slovensko ministarstvo obrane pod vodstvom Karla Erjavca neće moći potvrditi još bar mjesec dana. U okviru podmirenja klirinškog duga Ruske Federacije za Sloveniju je otvorena i mogućnost kupovine ruske vojne opreme, sukladne NATO-ovim standardima. Ministarstvo je potvrdilo informaciju da je Slovenija obavijestila Ruse da želi kupiti višenamjensko plovilo.
Investicijska dokumentacija koja bi poslužila kao temelj za pregovore bit će spremna u listopadu, a tek nakon toga će Rusija Sloveniji poslati ponudu s financijskim detaljima, na kojoj će se temeljiti odluka o kupnji broda.
Svi postupci vezani za kupnju broda trebali bi biti završeni do kraja godine, očekuju u slovenskoj vojsci. Sukladno sa sporazumom Rusija namjerava svojih 129 milijuna dolara duga Sloveniji isplatiti tri godine nakon potpisivanja sporazuma.
Slovenska ratna mornarica, osim nekoliko gumenjaka, raspolaže jednim 25 metara dugačkim patrolnim čamcem s posadom od deset mornara. U 430. mornaričkom divizionu osim mornara služi i nekoliko profesionalnih ronilaca. Točan broj pripadnika diviziona slovenska vojska nije otkrila.

Zanimivo mi je, da se naši bratje Hrvati vedno norčujejo iz velikosti Slovenije (v vicih in podobnih zadevah, seveda), ko pa je Hrvaška v primerjavi z veliko večino Evropskih še posebaj pa ostalih držav po svetu, prav tako pritlikava. :D

Croatia ordered Patria after Patria won the competition, PC 9's Croatia ordered these before Slovenia did, and Bell 212, well these were originally in police use, they aren't new helicopters. (Slovenia is using Bell 412 btw)

I do not understand Slovenian that well, I get some of the words, so I might be mistaken in what you trying to say.

Oh btw, I know Slovenia is talking to Russians in getting new gin boat not sure which one but they are talking I think it is a bad idea, Slovenia has very little in way of sea, and these boats aren't NATO compatible, to make it NATO compatible would cost in region of 25-30 million USD.

One thing I must comment on, I do not like Slovene ceremonial uniform, looks to authoritarian like, sort of Banana Republic kind of uniform, lol.

I hope they plan to change it, German one looks much better, perhaps this one should be a model.

I've never seen Croatian ceremonial uniforms, I'd love to see these, I hope they went for more conventional model, like the British or Dutch style uniforms.

It is worthwhile taking a look at technical characteristics of the Russian “Tiger” which is to ensure peace and stability in Asian seas. The design of the ships is based on a huge volume of the research on hydro dynamics and economical power stations. Today the Tigers constructed for the Russian Navy are powered with the diesel engines made by Kolomna Plant. Each of the propeller’s shafts is moved by the twin engines system of the D-49 series (ChN26/26). Two engines work at cruise speed, two more are switched to gain the maximum speed of 26-28 knots. German MTU diesels may be regarded as an option. However, Russia is ready to suggest to the new customers also gas turbines now made independently of the Ukraine by NPO Saturn.

Tiger was created under Stealth technology. It has the constructions made of plastics capable of absorbing and dispersing radio waves. Tiger is a universal ship for fighting surface ships and submarines with advanced air defense capabilities. It has 8 X-35E missiles of the complex Uran-E or CLUB, 100mm artillery unit, air defense complex Kashtan-E and anti sub helicopter. For anti-sub operations the ship has hydro acoustic station in the bulb and the towed active radar station which “sees” the subs at the distance of 50km. Interestingly, CMKB Almaz thinks it is possible to fit heavier Yahont missiles. It means that these corvettes will be also an ideal platform for Brahmos missiles, the most ambitious Russian-Indian project of supersonic cruise missile rapidly growing and with excellent marketing opportunities in Asia. Tiger retained traditional Russian advantages from the point of view of cost-efficiency ratio.

Export ship has few differences from the Russian version. Actually the difference depends on the customer’s choice. The ship has basically the same construction and architecture of systems. The peculiarity of the ship is that it is built according to the so called module system. This is a totally new principle in the Russian shipbuilding which allows for fast and easy repair / upgrade. CMKB Almaz suggests different options of the same ship. Instead of the Russian artillery unit 100mm AK-190M it is possible to fit Otto-Melara 76mm. Corvette can carry 12 tons helicopter. The ready options are Ka- 27, Ka-28, Ka-31. However, today Kamov is working on a lighter, 5-6 tons multi role helicopter.

Project 20382 corvettes may be a platform for the unique system of monitoring littoral waters, what is particularly interesting for the South-Asian customers. Apart from purely military means of fighting piracy in coastal waters Russian designers suggest a combined monitoring system based on the principle of combining the opportunities of the technical means of different origin: ships’ traffic control, naval infrastructure, customs and rescue services as well as of other interested parties. It is advantageous because the costs are divided among different budgets and the total cost goes down by 20-25%.

Not sure if I understood correctly, I assume you are saying M55s are in reserve, honestly I'd scrap them asp, give them to Botswana or Kenya, they are looking for cheap tanks, they need to replace there Type 59's and 69's.

Slovenia needs onl 54 M84 tanks, upgrade these to M95 Degman Standard or even better, get some Leo 2 A4's and upgrade these.

Slovenia only needs one battalion of tanks (52 tanks), but modernize these to max, to get M84 to Leo 2A6 standard (sensors and optronics) would cost about 2-3 million USD per tank, but would give you a good tank for next 15-20 years. :)

Koliko je meni poznato Sistemska tehnika se bunila zbog toga što su posao dobili Gorenje i Rotis,a i Sistemska je napravila Krpana jel tako znači da imaju iskustvo.
Znam da su vozila Patria ali če se sklapati u Gorenje RotisKrpan je narejen po licenci Pandurja II in se je slabše odrezal na testih, zato ni bil izbran.

Tudi Valuk, ki ga izdeluje Sistemska tehnika (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valuk) je izboljšana verzija Pandurja 6x6. Je pa ST pred kratkim začela graditi novo halo za njihov naslednji projekt (ne vem točno kaj, mislim pa da ni povezani z vojsko) ki naj bi bil po obsegu primerljiv z dobavo oklepnikov, tako da družba ne bo preveč trpela in odpuščala delavcev.

Ta nova tovarna od Gorenja pa je narejena po NATO standardih, saj želijo po izdelavi 136 Patrij za SV pridobiti še tuja naročila ali pa se reorganizirat za civilne namene. Vidim, da nekatere skrbi, da bodo "naše" Patrie slabše od ostalih. No skrb je odveč, ker se bo vseh 100 delavcev (prva skupina se že) šolalo na finskem in ker bodo naše Patrie med dražjimi in tako opremljene z vsemi možnimi zaščitami (tako kot Humvee), razen AMOSa (ampak sej je NEMO vredu).:cheers:

Now since some of you do not seem to understand me, I will repeat myself.
We allow military threads just as we allow other offtopic threads such as sports or hot chicks. But we close them when they become too popular. In this case, that thread was so active in a section it is not fit in, that it is pure spam.
And to see how many of you reacted after the closing, by more spam in this forum, is only hurting your cause. And let's not talk about all the speculation about me being a serb trying to hunt down the poor Croats. Especially since I have got nothing to do with that particular field, it's just a clear cut sign of the real mentality of some of you, which in the end, is just another pretext for us closing those volatile topics.
If you want an army thread, you have to realize we do NOT want people to log on this forum, only to participate in that thread only. We do NOT want that thread to have more activity than urbanism topics.
It's as simple as that.
We've already deleted whole skybar sections of other forums in the past, so don't think this is anything special to our standards.
