Have you been to the Low Cost terminal in Changi? it's identical.

Oh, then KKIA T2 is something which is comparable or better to Changi Low Cost Terminal. My earlier statement was meant to compare T1 with Changi's T3.

New approach to KKIA upgrading works
Posted on January 28, 2011, Friday
http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=90310

KOTA KINABALU: Global Upline Sdn Bhd has agreed to carry out a more environmental friendly approach to the upgrading works on the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) runway and taxiway project.

Its advisor, Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing, when disclosing this yesterday, said the new method had been approved by the state Environment Protection Department.

“What we are doing is to build a temporary staging before putting on the piling, which will be removed upon completion. This will not affect the shoreline and no land reclamation is involved,” he said.

Speaking to reporters during a simple launching ceremony on the Tanjung Aru flyover yesterday, Ting added they do not want to dredge sand over the extension and put the piling as it would cause the waterline to erode.

“It will cause heavy losses, especially when homes of the villagers are already on the verge of collapsing. The method was introduced to us by the EPD,” he said, adding the extension project involved the installation of 16 approach lights for airplanes to be completed nine months from now.

He said works had yet to start, pending approval from the Ministry of Transport on the new allocation.

“This new method would incur extra expenses, so we need more funds before we can start the project,” he said.

The whole project, including the upgrading of runway and taxiway, and also Terminal 2 Tanjung Aru Airport, began in April 2007.

“For Terminal 2, the government gave us three years to complete but we managed to do it in within six months.

“This project is part of Package Two which includes the new control tower, runway extension and Terminal 2,” he said, adding that the KKIA project was expected to be completed in March, 2012.

Ting said upgrading of the runway and taxiway was in progress.

“Although work is on-going, it does not disrupt flights. The delay is mostly to the limited window (a period of time when flights rest). We need at least six hours to work, but were only given four hours. We are only able to work two hours a day and the remaining is to close job … not much can be done within two hours despite having enough equipment,” he explained.

Ting said he understood the government’s needs to see the completion of the project fast, especially with Sabah promoting itself as the best tourist destination.

“I assure the resurfacing of the whole runway will be completed by end of this year, and the balance of work in March, 2012,” he said.

Stick to shift to terminal 1 KKIA, AirAsia urged
Published: 2011/03/19
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/20110319115127/Article/index_html

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri hopes that AirAsia will stick to the written decision conveyed to the Transport Ministry "that they will move their flight operations to the Terminal 1 at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA)".

He said that the terminal, with the state of the art facilities, could fulfill all the needs for commercial flight operations and cater to the needs of up to 14 million passengers.

Abdul Rahim said the transfer of AirAsia's operations to Terminal 1 would provide better flight connectivity to the passengers.

It could also avoid passengers from missing their flight and reduce the cost burden on the passengers in hiring taxis to go to Terminal 2 or being trapped in traffic jams while on transit flight, he said in Kota Kinabalu today.

Furthermore, he said, all the design and facilities at Terminal 1 such as the aerobridge had been provided as required.

As such, Abdul Rahim said, there was no reason for AirAsia not to move to Terminal 1 which he believed would not adversely affect operations but would probably lead to greater efficiency.

Previously, AsiaAsia had appealed to the Transport Ministry to continue its operations at the Terminal 2 KKIA although it had given its commitment to move to the Terminal 1 in mid-June this year.

Last month, AirAsia's chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said the airline was hesitant about moving out from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 KKIA which was recently expanded because the cost would rise, thus forcing it to reduce the number of flights and causing Sabah to lose about one million tourists. -- Bernama

what a real lame excuse ... or is it his way of saying AA is not making money out of KK? hence the 'threat' of 'forcing it to reduce the number of flights.' TF jangan la nak perlekehkan orang lagi...

Well you just have to bear in mind that due the upgrading works at KKIA the airport is currently running at its peak capacity given that it is only operating from one runway. With tight landing and takeoff gaps between aircrafts there are just so many flights that the airport is capable of handling at this point of time. To be fair I would not make any premature assumptions on the current rate of utilisation in terminal one as when the second runway is completed there will be no doubt that flight frequency will increase thereby increasing the number of passengers in terminal one. Yes, it might be true that AK may have more flights than other airlines; however, it will be a case of false economy if they are ever to reallocate to terminal one. With the completion of the second runway I can see an influx of new flight routes from major airlines aside from Air Asia. These airlines have long waited for their chance to operate in the second busiest hub in Malaysia and would not hesitate to push for it when the time comes. As with Air Asia a move to terminal one translates into higher operating costs in several areas with the major hit coming from airport taxes unless they are able to negotiate a special arrangement with Malaysian Airports Holdings Berhad which I believe there is not even a remote chance that this is going to occur. Not only will the move cause an increase in airfares for Air Asia passengers but will also put a dent in Tony Fernandes’ dream that “everyone can fly”.

Peak capacity ?!
Airside or landside ?
Neither I imagine

I would not make any premature assumptions about a second runway either :)
There won't be one at BKI as it is now - not unless some very valuable real estate nearby is forcibly sacrificed, which may render that proposal a non starter
Anyway, takes much more than a second runway (or third, or fourth ..... etc) to increase flight frequencies and pax numbers - you need to engineer the circumstance(s) for people to want to arrive/depart from a particular airport first

Yes, it might be true that AK may have more flights than other airlines; however, it will be a case of false economy if they are ever to reallocate to terminal one
It will also be a case of "false economy" if AK is to remain at T2, for you will then have T1 grossly underutilized but congestion at T2 necessitating more 'expansion' very soon (at expense of taxpayers presumably)

As with Air Asia a move to terminal one translates into higher operating costs in several areas with the major hit coming from airport taxes .....
Not only will the move cause an increase in airfares for Air Asia passengers but will also put a dent in Tony Fernandes’ dream that “everyone can fly”.
Suggest you try doing some research as to how much the increase in airport taxes (domestic and international) are, then work in figures in relation to total costs expected in one's journey :)

My apologies if my reference to the second runway has caused any confusion. As KKIA has a runway going through an extension and another taxiway undergoing construction at the moment my reference to the second runway can be interpreted as the runway that is going through the extension. In other words there is no second runway, I was a bit slack in my terminology by calling a taxiway a runway. Thank you Kiko for picking that up. However, given the ongoing construction/extension process the parallel runway and taxiway are still not operating at their full capacity thereby restricting the amount of both inbound and outbound flights. Albeit my terminological error, my abovementioned argument still holds true.

its ok my frenz..btw, wat im mentioned earlier is due to my feeling the wastage of the airport total space as it was rather less people using it..i believe AK cntrbte the largest in term of total passngers in BKI..tats y i personally thnk tat it will be better if they can move to T1..at least the airport will be live able & business will boom..

Actually, BKI does have two runways
Runway 20 and runway 02 :)
But same tarmac though
But no, your argument still doesn't hold water - neither terminal nor runway utilization is running anywhere near capacity as now
Noticed the emptiness at T1 ?
Ever enjoyed the birds twitting away along Jln Selangor during long intervals in between traffic movements ? :)

Sabahans Urged To Take Advantage Of Firefly Flights
June 12, 2011 11:58 AM
http://www.bernama.com/bernama/state_news/news.php?id=593256&cat=sbe

KOTA KINABALU, June 12 (Bernama) -- Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri urged Sabahans to take advantage of the flight services provided by community airline Firefly, now that it is operating the Kota Kinabalu-Kuala Lumpur route.

He said the airline using Boeing 737-800 aircraft for the route was a boon for passengers as besides the low fares, they could travel in comfort.

The service would also give the tourism industry in Sabah a further boost, he told Bernama here Sunday.

He said that the Kota Kinabalu International Airport was currently handling around six million passengers a year and that based on growth projection of seven per cent annually, the figure waas expected to rise to 10 million by 2020.

Sabah would benefit immensely from this as tourism was it most important economic sector, he added.

Firefly launches JB-KK route
Friday June 17, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/6/17/nation/8921044&sec=nation

PETALING JAYA: Firefly has launched a new route connecting Johor Baru to Kota Kinabalu with return flights twice daily.

“The Johor Baru-Kota Kinabalu route signifies improved connectivity between East and West Malaysia and from Johor to North Asia, through Kota Kinabalu,” Firefly managing director Datuk Eddy Leong said in a statement yesterday.

Kota Kinabalu is the second capital city in East Malaysia served by Firefly from its southern hub. On May 19, it started four daily flights between Johor Baru and Kuching.

He expected the company's passenger traffic to triple by yearend from 1.3 million to five million as the airline took delivery of more aircraft.

Yes, apparently the federal cabinet has decided they should relocate to T1 (according to our minister for transport)
But said minister will, but still has to 'talk to him' (T/S TF)

To all of you, what do you prefer? For AirAsia to relocate to T1 or maintain operations at T2? I would prefer if AA move to T1 because the more the merrier and T1 looks like a "ghost airport" sometines especially during off peak period. But hopefully there wont be any price hike.

A merrier terminal is one thing, connectivity in-beween flights is important. Right now, passengers have to fork out money for a long detour of taxi rides to T1 from T2 and vice versa.

KOTA KINABALU: The contractor doing upgrading work at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) has been given another deadline to complete the task.

This will be the third and final extension and work is now expected to be completed by the first quarter of next year.

Disclosing this, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha explained that the contractor is struggling to meet the various earlier deadlines, especially in the expansion of the runway from 2,988 metres to 3,780 metres as well as taxi-ways due to several factors.

“There have been many constraints for the contractor, especially in the expansion of the runway because part of it is still being used for take-off and landing of aircraft.

“And, there is also very limited time as the work is mainly done after midnight when the runway is closed,” he told reporters here yesterday after being briefed by Malaysia Airports Berhad on the current situation of the project, here.

Kong hoped the contractor would put in more effort, including hiring more manpower, to meet the new deadline as KKIA was receiving more demands from international airlines to fly to Kota Kinabalu.

He said due to those demands, the development of the airport, which was 89.78 per cent complete as of July 31, was now in a critical situation as it had become the second busiest airport in the country after the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Kong also said many aircraft could not land very late at night due to the upgrading work.

“This is the final deadline for the contractor to complete the work,”he pointed out.

Meanwhile, he said the delay in completion would not incur additional funding.

The expansion and upgrading of the KKIA is undertaken by Global Upline Sdn Bhd.

The project was originally scheduled to be completed in April 2009 and the contractor had already been granted two extensions – the first till December 2009 and the second, till May last year.

EMIRATES MAY FLY TO SABAH

Date Posted: 20 Sep 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: Middle Eastern airline Emirates is looking at the possibility of flying out of other destinations in Malaysia in the next three to five years.

The carrier currently offers three flights daily out of Kuala Lumpur to Dubai. One extends to Melbourne.

"We have made initial studies but we have not decided on it yet. There is lot of potential out of Penang if you ask me, but it will be about two years from now before we decide on anything," Emirates Malaysia country manager Kavin Martinus said.

Another destination Emirates is looking at in Malaysia is the Kota Kinabalu - Dubai route. This was part of a feasibility study done by Emirates five to six years ago on a 10-year plan to identify new growth areas for itself in Malaysia.

"Kota Kinabalu is also in the pipeline, eventually with so many aircraft on order and so many destinations we cannot discount that possibility," Martinus said.

While in Europe, Emirates flies out of multiple destinations in one country, it has not replicated this strategy in Southeast Asia. The airline's strategy is to fly to primary points Yfirst and slowly expand.

"We play it safe and fly to business destinations first, if we have proper business traffic then leisure traffic will follow," Martinus said.

The airline normaYlly takes feedback from all stations before starting a new route.

Emirates has a fleet of 153 aircraft now, servicing over 100 cities around the world. It has 75 Airbus 380s, 70 Airbus 350s and 49 Boeing 777s on order.

Sabah wants more KL-KK flights
2011/10/20

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah hopes Malaysia Airlines (MAS) or AirAsia would add more flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu following the termination of Firefly's services.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said Firefly, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines Group, had contributed to the increased availability of seats resulting in an increase of 21 per cent in domestic arrivals in Sabah as of August.

"There will be an impact on Sabah's domestic tourist arrivals in the short run.

"But I believe airlines are in the business of making money and eventually, when they know there is demand, obviously it will make sense for them to add on more flights," he told reporters after opening a seminar on Sabah's prospects and retrospects after colonial rule here today.

Masidi said the airline group needs to rationalise its operations in East Malaysia to ensure it does not lose more money.

While hoping the matter could be resolved in order to meet increasing demand, he expressed gratitude that passengers can still choose to travel by either MAS or AirAsia.

On Tuesday, the group said it had embarked on a network rationalisation programme with Firefly concentrating on short-haul turboprop operations and MAS focusing on its premium full-service offerings.

The programme will be undertaken over a two-month period on a sector-by-sector basis, and will result in all Firefly jet aircraft being redeployed into MAS' operations by Dec 4, 2011.

However, the group remains committed to Sabah and Sarawak and will continue to operate all services to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. -- BERNAMA

Ermmm, this latest string of events occuring at MAS show how the management has lost its credibility over the years. Yes, I am bit dissappointed by that decision, but at the same time I think that MAS really has lost its way.

The very term "secondary hub" is an embarassement of sort already !
If it's good/vibrant enough to be an aviation hub, call it as such - secondary means it's neither here nor there, leaning more towards 'syok sendiri' status :)
Incidentally, that picture above more or less confirms BKI is NOT of hub status material yet - completely abandoned, can anyone identify a single aeroplane on ground ?!

Yea. It does appear as if MAS is trying slim down their operations. Theyre also leaving the 6 continents club ceasing South Africa and Argentina flights soon if im not mistaken. Or could they be making way for AA? I dont really tink the Japan flights are profitable though, dont see much Japanese around. The Korean flights maybe so, but there's currently 2 or 3 other airlines plying this route.

KK International Airport to be operational 24 hours by May 1

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/3/17/nation/20120317144324&sec=nation
KOTA KINABALU: The international airport here will be operational around the clock by May 1 after being shutdown for six hours daily since 2006 for runway resurfacing works.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the 792m runway extension to accommodate a fully loaded Boeing 747 would only be completed by year end.

“The most critical element now is to get the runway opened for 24 hours and we will be able to do this by May 1,” he said after visiting the ongoing runway project at the Kota Kinabalu Internatioonal Airport (KKIA) on Saturday.

He said the six-hour shut down of the airport had largely affected chartered flights and not the scheduled operations of MAS and other airlines.

The runway extension was part of the massive RM1.4bil expansion and refurbishment works of the KKIA that included the construction of a new main terminal, a low cost carrier terminal and a new control tower.

On the runway extension from the existing 2,988m to 3,780m, he said work on the additional 792m was ongoing, including increasing the elevation and installation of approach lights in the sea on the southern end to comply with international safety standards.

Judging from the photos above, it seems like another airport terminal with a similar floor space and layout as Terminal 1 can be built beside it. Probably why MAHB managing director did mentioned about the airport is still have enough space to be expanded - passenger capacity wise. But then, the MASKargo hangar must be moved to somewhere else.
