View Full Version : BKI | Kota Kinabalu International Airport
AhChuan April 21st, 2007, 08:06 AM Well, since Kota Kinabalu International Airport(KKIA) is the second most busiest airport in Malaysia after KLIA, so I make a thread for it...Hehehe...:D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/eyeofheaven/DSC01182.jpg
Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) (IATA: BKI, ICAO: WBKK) is located about 8 km from the city of Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia. It is the second busiest airport in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur International Airport with around 4 million passengers using this airport annually for domestic and international flights. It is also the main gateway into the state of Sabah. In 2006, about 2 million unique tourists visited Sabah, and it is estimated that this number will exceed 2.5 million by the end of 2007.
Terminal 1
Terminal 1 is the main terminal of KKIA. It is accessed via Jalan Putatan in Petagas nearby Kepayan. Currently its technical facilities includes 12 gates, 5 airbridges, and 4 baggage claim belts. It has the capacity of handling 2.5 million passenger annually. It also features duty-free shops, other shops, lounges, travel agents, restaurants, and many others. It is currently undergoing a massive renovation and expansion (see above). Malaysia Airlines is the main operating airline in this terminal.
* Asiana (Seoul-Incheon)
* Cathay Pacific
- Dragonair (Hong Kong)
* Domodedovo Airlines Charter

* Singapore Airlines
- Silk Air (Singapore)
* TransAsia Airways (Taipei-Taiwan Taoyuan) Charter
Terminal 2
What is today Terminal 2 used to be the original terminal building of the airport when it was first built. It is accessed via Jalan Mat Salleh in Tanjung Aru and is located on the other side of the runway from Terminal 1. Terminal 2 has recently undergone a major renovation and extension and it re-opened on January 1, 2007 in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007. Although it is renovated to serve the low cost carriers, namely AirAsia, it is not a low cost carrier terminal (LCCT) as that of Kuala Lumpur International Airport, as other full service airlines may use the terminal.[6] It has 26 check-in counters for domestic and international flights and six parking bays for B737 and A320 aircraft as well as seven luggage x-ray machines, a VIP room and 13 immigration counters. AirAsia will make Kota Kinabalu the main hub for flights from China to Malaysia due to Kota Kinabalu being the nearest Malaysian hub to China.
AirAsia is expected to start flying to Shenzen, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Indonesia in 2007. Sabah Government is optimistic in targeting more visitors from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Japan and Russia.

Nissan_FUGA April 21st, 2007, 08:32 AM Nice update! I hope the control tower would look more like KLIA control tower in design....Are there any plans for hotel inside the airport?
TYW April 21st, 2007, 09:38 AM nice thread, AhChuan!
hope to see more updates :okay:
AhChuan April 21st, 2007, 11:49 AM Thx!! No prob!!!
Well, I do hope got hotel to be build at the airport area...seem like KKIA so modern and nice...is good to hav hotel...The control tower look a bit fat la...which it dun like a control tower and I dun like it...
Bro fairul...dun forget ur promise...:naughty:
fairul April 21st, 2007, 11:53 AM ^^ no problem..sure thing...always keep my promise...
well done!! a project worth RM1.2 billion need to have its own page..keep it up...:)
AhChuan April 21st, 2007, 12:01 PM ^^ OK!!! :okay:
fairul April 22nd, 2007, 06:35 AM the contract should include the multilevel parking in the first place...i dislike those open air parking concept for a big airport
AhChuan April 22nd, 2007, 06:37 PM the contract should include the multilevel parking in the first place...i dislike those open air parking concept for a big airport
Sorry for the late reply, seem like this thread often "missing"....why ah??
Btw...ermm...well, RM1.2 Billion is a huge number oledy...building the multilevel carpark would be add more expenses...
Nissan_FUGA April 23rd, 2007, 03:07 AM Since the KKIA is the second busiest airport in Malaysia, so it is one of the most important airport projects in Malaysia, personally i think cost should not be the issue....
Building multi-level parking makes the car drivers more comfortable (without having the feel the heat) and also increase the number of parking lots...
AhChuan April 23rd, 2007, 05:19 AM ^^ Well, everything we build muz hav include expenses and they work very hard to keep the cost afforable...RM1.2 Billion...this number so big...
Also, building a multilevel cp may make ppl more miserable...like, a person oledy late for his/her flight...and hav to go search for parking at the multilevel cp...well, if he/she found a parking quickly....he/she hav to wait again the lift..and walk to the terminal...I will think tht so much time lose...
Nothing oso wat a free space car park...cheap, more simple, and save time. ;)

AhChuan,
I think that isn't going to be control tower lah, it's like kaki for a massive water tank if I've got my facts right.
Thanks for the update pics, save me a bit of task I intended to do. Can I have permission to link this thread to another forum ?
AhChuan April 23rd, 2007, 12:25 PM ^^ Yea!! I oso curious and think tht is not the control tower...coz, it look "fat" :D....well haizzzz...from all the time I spending my time took this stupid water tank..:bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
But, this tower look quite high till I think it is the control tower...Hahaha...
fairul April 23rd, 2007, 01:02 PM a fat tower is very common in europe..just that its not being practice here in Malaysia..by having a fat tower..you can add office areas inside it..judging from the photos..i have doubts..that 'tower' is by WCT..but according to the project..the control tower is by GUSB..package 2..so..we'll have to wait few more months to solve this mystery tower...hehe
AhChuan April 23rd, 2007, 01:13 PM ^^ Harrr??? So, you mean the WCT's tower is really a water tank ah??? But, this tower look tall from far away....
Btw, GUSB stand for?? Hehehe...many things I dunno, better learn from here...
awangmamat April 23rd, 2007, 01:41 PM ^^ GUSB = Global Upline Sdn Bhd. Me thinks.

from this rendering, i think KKIA T1 main terminal design is quite similar to France's Charles De' Guilles(correct me if im wrong bout the spelling) Airport terminal building n i really like the design..... soooo different from other international airport in malaysia..... thanx to the designer hehehehe:banana:

MASB acts on Daily Express complaint
Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd has investigated and taken action on complaints aired through the Daily Express Hotline service last month.
Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), Senior Airport Manager, Aznan Othman said following the complaints, "we decided to terminate the services of the massage chairs."
"Pending the termination and removal of the chairs, we have put up signages to inform the public that the chairs are out of order," he said.
As for the ramps at Terminal 2, he said they were part of the additional plans proposed to the contractor.
"However, the site is still under construction. We will ensure that the ramps are built as scheduled for the convenience of passengers," he added.

tbc May 20th, 2007, 03:35 PM Nothing like that to be honest - we drive on the right side of road for a start !! As for the tower, must be some sort of ultra secret design - no hint whatsoever so far. One can only make out the circular stump at bottom being constructed now !!

I doubt if they will construct the double deck boarding gates at BKI (yet?) though
KING BOB May 25th, 2007, 02:40 PM Well yeah TBC, LOL. Maybe they could create one more terminal instead of having one terminal, and even make an aerotrain (Like KLIA) but then again it would cost millions of dollars or even billion.
White_soX May 25th, 2007, 03:32 PM Hint, lol............look even Pan Am plane in there too............3 of them....

if im not mistaken, there was a proposed project for new KK airport near kimanis..but due to the high cost(i think),the government cancelled it an opt for upgrading the existing terminal instead..

I believe there was a proposal for just such an aerotrain linking T2 with (soon to be) T1 - common sense prevailed I suppose !!

can KKIA accommodate A380?
In mid 2005, the Malaysian government approved a project for major renovation and extension of KKIA worth RM1.2 billion that will see the present 2,988 m runway extended to 3,780 m and the size of the main airport terminal building (Terminal 1) increased from 34,000 m² to 87,000 m². The new airport terminal building will be able to accommodate four Boeing 747s, one Airbus A330, seven Boeing 737s, three Fokker 50s and three Dorniers at any one time. It will also have 17 jetways for passenger use.[6][7] The present air traffic control tower which is attached to the main terminal building will be demolished and will be replaced by a separate, stand alone tower. The whole project including the runway extension is scheduled to be completed by mid-2009.[1]
When the overall project is completed, the airport will be able to accommodate the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft. The airport will also be the second largest airport in Malaysia with an annual capacity of 12 million passengers — 9 million from Terminal 1 and 3 million from Terminal 2.[8]
In 14 of May 2007, Tune Hotels announced its plans to establish its first property in East Malaysia at the upcoming 1 Borneo hypermall in Kota Kinabalu. The expansion programme offers the company an exciting opportunity to fill in the large gap of quality branded no-frills accommodation in South East Asia region. The company sees a huge upside in Kota Kinabalu's tourism market over the next 45 years.

But, for now....still cannot. Boeing 747 still can.

adamcwy July 10th, 2007, 01:16 PM Kota Kinabalu airport upgrade leads to cancellation of 60 chartered flights
KOTA KINABALU: The upgrading of the international airport here has forced the cancellation of 60 international chartered flights to Sabah.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said that there was nothing much they could do about it but wait for the upgrading of the KKIA project to be completed by 2009.
"Most of these charter flights bringing tourist, prefer to land late nights but they cannot do so because of works at the airport," he said, adding that he would try and see what can be done to assist the state tourism players on this matter.
Adnan, who had a dialogue with hoteliers, tour operators and tour guides separately to hear their problems, said that he was informed the flights were mainly from China, Japan and some west Asian countries.
However, he stressed that his ministry was pushing for more direct flights to Sabah.
Adnan said that he held discussions with the Singapore based Tiger Air and several operators in Japan and China to consider Kota Kinabalu, which is described as a top eco-tourism destination in the region.
"I am pushing for open skies," he said, adding that his ministry was in discussion with the Transport Ministry over the matter.
He said he was also persuading Malaysia Airlines subsidiary Fire Fly to consider making Kota Kinabalu a regional hub to cover the East Asean Growth Area encompassing Sabah, Sarawak, southern Philippines, Sulawesi and Kalimantan.

tbc July 11th, 2007, 03:15 PM That pic actually does not do justice to the scale of construction ongoing (what to do, snapped from across the road with heavy traffic whizzing by !) Compared to existing terminal building, it is BIG ! Unfortunately, that also means current building looks like in the middle of a war zone - somewhat neglected. On outside at least, I haven't been past departure gate there for a while already !

most of the aerobridge here in Malaysia are local made...most probably the new KKIA will use the local ones made by MASI..but i may be wrong...

Really ?! And here I was wondering how arriving pax will be able to tell whether they're at BKI or KCH ! Just look at those windows and 'hammerhead bridges' - the emerging evidence of similarity is most uninspiring !
Having said that, best for construction to be completed before one passes final judgement !

bart_shinoda December 11th, 2007, 07:22 AM Earliest use from Jan 22
Kota Kinabalu: Passengers will be able to board their flights from the RM720 million new extension of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) from Jan. 22 next year.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the check-in would still be conducted at the existing block to ease inconveniences faced by passengers and visitors alike.
"But by April 2, the new extension will be operational both for check-in and boarding to facilitate the upgrading of the old block," he said after a briefing at Terminal II in Tanjung Aru, Monday.
He said the completion of Package I (main terminal building, landside infrastructure and facilities) will be slightly delayed but is confident of the capability of contractors to deliver the project by May 2009.
As for Package II (airside infrastructure), he said it is ahead of schedule by 8.4 per cent.
Thanks to the State government's assistance to relocate the squatters at Sri Tanjung, he said the upgrading and extension works would be completed as scheduled.
"Without the Sabah Government's assistance, the project would not be so smooth," he said. Chan also thanked the public for their support, cooperation and patience to enable the ambitious multi-million ringgit project to be implemented.
The KKIA, he said, is the second busiest airport in the country after the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) that handles about four million travellers.
The entire project covers 90,000 sq m and comes with a price tag of more than RM1 billion. When completed, it would have 17 parking bays for aircraft, 1,400 parking lots and state-of-the-art facilities.
The new airport terminal will be able to accommodate five Boeing 747s, two Airbus A330, 10 Boeing 737s, three Fokker 50s and three Dorniers at any one time.
There will be also 64 check-in counters with 20 counters manned by the Immigration Department. The runway will be extended from the present 2.988km to 3.78km to facilitate usage by heavier aircraft.
Taxi drivers would also have a designated rest area complete with washrooms for their convenience while waiting for passengers.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress of work, Chan said except for one or two issues, he is confident the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) and the two main contractors will deliver the project on schedule.
"Among the problems is the relocating of the equipment from the existing control tower to its new location," he said.
On certain issues raised by low-cost carrier, AirAsia, Chan said they are prepared to look into these. Also present was Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Edward Khoo.

KOTA KINABALU: The new terminal at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport here is scheduled to be fully operational by April next year.
And, by then, it is hoped that the current “inconvenience and congestion” will reduce markedly for travellers.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to the airport yesterday, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) is planning to use it for boarding and arrivals by January 9 before making it fully operational for passengers to check in at the new terminal block.
He also said once the new terminal is ready, the current old terminal will be closed fully to allow for upgrading work.
This new terminal complex which is to be connected with the old terminal block is among a massive Kota Kinabalu International Airport upgrading project involving runway extension and a new low cost terminal among others at a cost of RM1.4bil.
The entire project is scheduled for completion by May in 2009.
“We thank the public for putting up with the inconvenience as it is not easy carrying out major upgrading works on an airport that is operational,” Chan said, adding that Kota Kinabalu airport was second busiest in the country after KLIA.
He added that once completed, the upgraded airport would have state of the art facilities that will meet Sabah’s needs.
“Overall, the project is about 8.4% ahead of time though there are some delays in specific areas but it would not affect the completion date,” he said, thanking the state government in resolving the Sri Tanjung airport squatter problem.
On MAB’s decision to move the operations of all airlines to the new terminal once completed in 2009, he said they would be looking into AirAsia’s request to remain at Terminal Two instead of moving to the new terminal complex.
“They have written in. We have to hear them out before we make any decision,” he said, adding that the new complex when completed will be able to handle the needs of all airlines and would be convenient in terms of operations. Also present was Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Edward Khoo.

Newly installed at BKI
@rt January 6th, 2008, 10:43 AM i'm a little disappointed that this airport will be looking a lot like KLIA... just as the others in msia...
anyway, i'm surprised to see a korean air at the last gate of the old terminal. usually international flights occupy the first few gates. maybe its a lack of aerobridges that KKIA needs so desperately..
tbc January 6th, 2008, 04:10 PM Not necessarily so. More importantly it's the type of equipment used to operate a particular flight, either domestic or international. Gates 1,2 and 5 at BKI are able to accomodate the widebodies (A330, B777, B747 and the like) whilst gates 3 and 4 serve narrowbodies (A320, B737) only
When we arrived that evening, an 'international flight' operated by a China Southern A320, we were parked at one of the remote bays and had to walk all the way to the terminal (hence opportunity to snap pics of areobridges) Reason was quite clear, gates 1 & 2 were eventually occupied later by a RBA B767 from Brunei and a MH B777 transitting at BKI enroute to NRT or KIX

Kota Kinabalu: THE scene at the new building of Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).
Although not fully completed, the travelling public can already experience the comfort especially at the disembarkation area as well as the air-bridge leading to the plane.
Some remarked that the interior design was similar to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) although smaller.
All disembarkation of passengers at the KKIA has been shifted to the new building since January 2008 while the old building is undergoing renovation as well up grading other facilities, including the aerobridge.
The new building will be fully operational by May 2009.

bart_shinoda May 13th, 2008, 06:58 AM ONE-STOP TOURISM INFO CENTRE AT KKIA
KOTA KINABALU: A one-stop tourism information centre will be set up at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport’s (KKIA) Terminal One in September, Deputy State Director of Tourism Malaysia Mohd Akbal Setia said yesterday.
Speaking to reporters after launching the Sutera Harbour Information Centre here, he said the one-stop centre will provide information on tourism sights and sites, accommodation and transportation.
“The information centre will be manned by knowledgeable personnel assigned to disseminate the required particulars to our tourists. This will ensure that tourists have a better idea of what to expect, what to do and where to go when they touch down here,” he said, adding that this will help the tourism industry tremendously.
Mohd Akbal said the existing information centre at Terminal Two is already being used extensively by tourists. “As soon as they touch down in that terminal, they visit the information centre to acquire whatever information they need, so I believe the centre is very useful and functional for tourists, be it domestic or international,” he said.
On the launch of the Sutera Harbour Information Centre, he said this is a positive move by the hotel as it does not only disseminate information on its properties and services but also helps tourists to acquire other information as well.
“I believe they also disseminate information on tourism sites in Sabah, so they are helping the tourism sector here tremendously,” he said, adding other establishments involved in the hospitality industry should follow Sutera Harbour’s example.
Meanwhile, Sutera Harbour Resort Chief Operating Officer Ravindran Kathiravelu said the centre, which has been open to the public for the last two months, offers several services besides details on the resort and tourism sites in the state.
“Our tourists can also make bookings for accommodation and other arrangements for Sutera Sanctuary Lodges, our island resort and the Sutera Harbour Resort,” he said, adding that tourists can just walk in or place their booking from the centre, sited in the middle of the city. The Sutera Harbour Information Centre is open from 9am to 6pm daily from Monday to Friday and 9am to 4pm on Saturday.

KOTA KINABALU: Low cost budget carrier AirAsia will have to operate from the international airport terminal here after May next year despite their appeals to stay on at Terminal Two.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin said that they would cease operating at the airport's Terminal Two complex in Tanjung Aru and move to the main airport complex that is currently being upgraded.
"All airlines, whether local or international, will use the main terminal block as soon it is ready for operations," Lajim said Friday after visiting the RM1.4bil Kota Kinabalu International Airport upgrading works here.
Asked if AirAsia had agreed to move out of Terminal Two to the main terminal once it is ready, Lajim said that they had more or less agreed following a series of meetings chaired by officials from the Transport Ministry.
"They have held discussions and there should be no problem with it," Lajim said, adding that the current Terminal Two would be a dedicated cargo terminal.
"The move to house all airlines operations under one roof is practical and would benefit travellers whether locals or foreigners," Lajim said, adding that the current Terminal Two would be converted into a dedicated cargo terminal.
Lajim said that AirAsia has flights originating from Kota Kinabalu to various international destinations and the ministry feels that the main terminal with all its facilities could be used as their hub.
On the progress of the airport expansion and refurbishment, he said the main terminal should be ready by May 20, 2009 with partial operations beginning in July this year.
TWK90 May 24th, 2008, 09:58 AM So, the aisle resembles KLIA,...the background colour on the signage is different than those in KLIA and other new airports...and slight difference in the design of departure hall compared to KLIA...whereby there's two colours (brown and grey) on the ceiling compared to brown in most new east Malaysian airport and KLIA....
Probably KKIA T1 will look full if the T2 operation shut from the passenger operation, but then, it does look like a waste considering the T2 interior looks pretty good for a LCCT...

Benz- yes the 1st photo taken from elevated water tank and KKIA originaly had a plan to introduce "high security scanner and detector Baggage Handling" Inline Baggage Screening but due to maybe budget constraint (I guess only o..) the plan cannot be done.. If Inline Baggage Screening introduce the building should be much bigger by 30m length. If you check the previous post (rendering photo with word Option 1), there some changing in the design of the building there is five skylight in the rendering instead of 3 installed at site (Photo).

benz June 29th, 2008, 06:19 AM @anoie
as I can see from the rendering design
there are 4 skylight and now from your pic taken there is only 3
so will there be ample sunlight going in to bright the terminal?
based on beijing Terminal 3 they have enough skylights to let the sunlight shines in
this way the terminal could save a lot in electricity usage and they do not have to on the lights till 5-6pm
tbc June 30th, 2008, 03:42 PM Anoie,
Oh, that pic of the Korean 744 at BKI wasn't that recent then ? Like a couple of months back ?
Yeah, supposed to be a series of special charters by KE ferrying in some incentive trip group - really rare incidence of having two 744's on BKI's apron at same time !
That pic of MAS' 744 at BKI, that was after she had dropped off the newly ordained haji's and hajjah's at old part of T1 ? You all were trying out the new aerobridges and calibrating presumably ? I was straining for a peek, all the way across at Jln Selangor ! Now you post these excellent close up shots - fuyoh, thank you again !

benz July 5th, 2008, 01:42 AM AIR ASIA WILL MOVE TO TERMINAL 1
KOTA KINABALU: The government has stuck to its decision to shift the operation of Air Asia to Kota Kinabalu International (KKIA) Airport or Terminal 1.
Deputy Transportation Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin however said that his office is still open to negotiations with the company concerned before making a final decision.
“As far as possible, we want them to shift their operation but because of their needs, they don’t want to do so. We from time to time will discuss with them,” said Lajim at a press conference after launching the School Warden Traffic Program at SK St. Agnes in Likas yesterday. Prior to this, Lajim had proposed the operation of Air Asia to shift to Terminal 1 to overcome the traffic congestion problem at the LCCT. However Lajim’s suggestion to shift the operation after the upgrading project at KKIA scheduled to be completed in May next year, were opposed by Air Asia.
According to Lajim among the reasons why Air Asia opposed to the suggestion is the additional cost needed on rental of aprons for parking planes which is RM85 per hour and that will affect the concept of Air Asia’s low cost fare.
Meanwhile, when asked whether there is any delay on the upgrading of Terminal 1, KKIA, Lajim did not deny the possibility. He said the reason is due to several changes in the design as requested by the state government.
“We asked for a few changes on design and plan, and the federal government has changed a few scopes but the state government does not agree…we will negotiate on this and it might be late,” said Lajim referring to the completion of the project.
The School Warden Traffic Program is a community-based program involving all levels of society starting with school students, parents, Parents and Teachers Association, schools, Non-Government Association, the corporate sector, state and federal departments. It is a prevention program to reduce accidents among pedestrians especially students where statistics showed that from January to May 2008, a total of 291 deaths were recorded throughout the country.
In the year 2007, a total of 263 deaths were recorded and 28 cases in 2008. Among those present with Lajim yesterday were Director of Sabah Road Safety Department Herdianshah Abdul Karim and Kota Kinabalu Education Officer Dr. Kassim Mohd. Ibrahim.
at first Air Asia opposed to move to T1
then somehow they agree with state gov to move to T1 after some discussion
now they oppose again since the cost of T1 is higher
IMO, air asia should remain at T2. This would create an opportunity for the middle and lower income group to fly and have holidays since the charging cost of T2 is cheaper than T1. Besides that, T2 is way too nice to be converted into a cargo terminal. Do not waste the facilities that has been implemented in T2. By shifting them to T2, this will cause a confusion for tourist too. In the future, dividing this 2 airline into two different places would reduce congestion when we see an increase in passengers using both terminal. I would like to suggest the federal government to build another smaller and cheaper terminal to cater the cargo terminal or upgrade the existing one which is beside kkia T1
and what designs and plans are they changing on T1? Please don't screw the whole thing by cutting cost and making it smaller but if better ideas is implemented, I would agree to it

benz August 17th, 2008, 10:53 AM New KK International Airport terminal opens Tuesday
KOTA KINABALU: The RM1.4bil makeover of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport here is one more step closer to completion once the new main terminal here becomes operational on Tuesday.
Malaysia Airports senior general manager Datuk Azmi Murad said operations at the existing terminal would be shifted to the new RM720mil building at 12.01am on that day.
He said the new Terminal 1 would be capable of handling up to 3,200 passengers per hour during peak periods and have 64 check-in counters for international and domestic flights as well 17 aircraft parking bays.
Azmi noted that elements indigenous to Sabah were incorporated into the interior of the terminal where design of column heads were inspired by the wakid or traditional baskets used by the Kadazandusun and Murut communities.
“Ethnic patterns of the Rungus and Bajau communities were also incorporated into the way the floor tiles were laid out,” he told a media briefing Sunday at the new terminal building here.
He said the old terminal that had been used since the 1980s would be demolished and rebuilt by mid-2009. It would be incorporated with the new building, doubling the floor space to more than 100,00sq m and be used mainly for domestic arrivals and departures.
Azmi said with 4.3 million passengers using the KKIA last year, the airport was one of the busiest after the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). In comparison, the number of passengers passing through the Kuching and Penang airports in 2007 was about 3 million.
For this year, MAB was anticipating that up to 4.6 million passengers would be passing through the KKIA that had a capacity of handling up to 9 million passengers annually.
“Going by an average growth of between 5% and 8% in passenger volume annually, we expect the terminal to reach its capacity in about eight to 10 years,” Azmi said, adding that there was however still room for expansion.
The KKIA redevelopment also includes the construction of a low cost carrier terminal that was operational last year as well as the extension of the runway to 3,780m and a full-length taxiway scheduled to be completed in 2009.

New KKIA Terminal 1 Starts Operation Today
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The new Terminal 1 of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) officially started operation today with the departure and arrival of all flights transferred to the new building from the adjacent old terminal.
Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd general manager Abdul Rahman Karim said the transition went very well except for a minor glitch on the first flight departing from the new building.
"The first flight, MH 2637 to Kuala Lumpur, had a slight delay but it was resolved," he said, adding that the flight was supposed to take off at 6.50am but did so an hour later.
The last flight operating from the old terminal building was at 12.25am.
To commemorate the start of operations at the new terminal, Malaysia Airports gave out tokens to passengers on three flights departing this morning -- Malaysia Airlines flight to Sandakan (MH3632), Royal Brunei Airlines flight to Bandar Seri Bengawan (BI 822) and Malaysia Airlines flight to KL (MH2663).
Abdul Rahman said the transfer of operations to Terminal 2, which is a low-cost carrier terminal (Air Asia), was expected to take place in May next year as scheduled.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, after inspecting the flyover in front of the airport, which is part of the KKIA development, said he was satisfied with the construction.
"In such a short time, the company responsible, Global Upline Sdn Bhd, has completed the first flyover which is expected to be operational at the end of September," he said.
Musa said the second and third flyovers were expected to be completed soon and the combined cost of building the three flyovers was around RM120 million.

anoie September 6th, 2008, 05:15 PM Hello
Student Today let we study about History Construction of KKIA
Why most of the Rendering Picture that post to this thread printed with
word "OPTION 1" in that picture?
The answer is : During early stage Government (Ministry of Transport) want The Contractor (WCT Berhad) and their Architect (Melvin Kiandee Architect) 4 option for the roof.
So here is the other three option. Actually original design for KKIA is option 3:bash: (palis-palis) but finally& Luckily Option 1 get more attention.

My next post should be changing of shape in option 1 (if i can find any in the Archive )
Thank You
TWK90 September 6th, 2008, 06:03 PM The best option obviously Option 1, however, if second best, i'll go for Option 2.....
The last choice, option 3...looks bland!

benz September 7th, 2008, 02:32 AM option 1 but the third level departure roof is kind of a plain design (2nd pic of option 1)

it futuristic enough, just the colour looks plain...
add some wood materials with green/ blue glass will look more contrast and attractive, like the option 2.

rizalhakim September 18th, 2008, 05:13 AM No Pressure For Low-cost Carriers To Move Operations To Terminal 1 Of KKIA, Says Lajim
KOTA KINABALU, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- There is no pressure for low cost carriers such as AirAsia to move their operations in Terminal 2 of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport to the new Terminal 1, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin.
He said although plans to convert Terminal 2 into a cargo terminal was still being discussed, AirAsia could still operate at the terminal which was launched in February last year.
"What is important is that AirAsia is comfortable with their ways. If right now is good for AirAsia and its passengers, then we have no reasons to ask them to move.
"Turning the terminal into a cargo terminal will be decided later," he told reporters after witnessing the launch of MASwings new ATR 72 aircrafts inaugural flight to Lahad Datu here, today.
The flight was launched by state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun.

TWK90 September 18th, 2008, 06:51 AM And how many square meters Terminal 1 now?
I don't know the current size as currently, because terminal 1 got mix of new and old.....half, new....half old (under construction)...
However, before the KKIA expansion commenced, the Terminal 1 size is about 34,000 square metres, with 6 gates (5 airbridges, 1 gate for turboprops)......in comparison, the new Terminal 1 is about 87,000 square metres, can service five Boeing 747s, two Airbus A330, 10 Boeing 737s, three Fokker 50s and three Dorniers at one time...

I never realised this before, but KK airport and its runway could never be placed in a worse spot! Not only is the airport located at close proximity to the city centre, but the direction of the runway runs facing it! Which joker planned it like this and why did the municipality approve it in the first place? Now I know why tall buildings cannot be built downtown, such a pity as KK's grid road layout in the city centre could host an awesome skyline if skyscrapers could be built there!

Bear in mind, this airport was built long time already, by the Japanese during World War 2....
Since then, new terminals, runways are all being done there....
tbc September 18th, 2008, 03:37 PM Ah, but then are you very sure the absence of high rise skyscrapers in downtown KK is in any way related to orientation of BKI's runways ? :)

If not, then please enlighten me why developers never consider building tall structures there, the suburbs of KK have way taller buildings. Even Borneo 1 towers are, I believe, taller than the tallest buildings in the city centre right?
@rt September 19th, 2008, 12:05 AM i think the runway was built during the times when the shoreline was still around karamunsing. kk city centre is about 80% (my vague assumptive calculation) reclaimed land. it was a slow process, which now has reached up to its current shoreline - the pocket park thingie. so i guess its not the airport's fault, but the town council itself (then) decided to reclaim land n build over air flight path. dono y though..
n btw, Iggis... are u russian? privyet! ti budesh lyubit malaizii!
kkia is roughly half the size of moscow sheremetyevo2, or 1/3 of moscow domodedovo airport. i'm not sure if it will impress u, but kuala lumpur airport definitely will.. =)

Try considering the occupancy rate for high rises in downtown KK - if you're a developer and see half empty buildings abound, would you risk it ?
1 Borneo towers are meant for residential purpose. Residential high rises in downtown KK I suppose is limited to Marina Court, occupancy also not too impressive so far
Basically, it's down to supply and demand. If the need is there, people will find a way to build and flight paths can be modified (eg Kai Tak) or airport shifted away (eg Chep Lap Kok)
Just my two sens worth :)

That's also my point: before renovating KK airport, they should have considered shifting it for future city-centre growth. Now that so much money has been spent on it, I think the airport is meant to stay as it is for the next 2 to 3 decades, thus hindering the growth of KK's city centre.
Anyhow, no matter how you see it, KK Airport is in a very bad location, with a very badly aligned runway. There is flight safety, sound and air pollution problems for a growing airport to be so close to the city centre. Far sighted planners would never position an international airport like that.

Actually, there was a plan to shift the airport few years ago...

If one is to weigh it from a purely cost/benefit viewpoint, I cannot see how anyone can justify the cost of relocating BKI. It's not just the airport, there will also be required the necessary supporting infrastructure eg. highway access, perhaps a high speed rail link etc
And all for what - so skyscrapers can be built in the city centre ? Not the stuff genuine town planners would envisage I dare say. I'm no town planner, but I would imagine it's a bad idea to design in such away that you get people concentrated in a constricted area, as skyscrapers and high rises are prone to do. Especially when there is ample space all round the city for lateral expansion
Having blab on all that, I believe ultimately it was lack of political will and lack of opportunity to make a quick buck for someone that prevented BKI from moving from its present location. But then I digress
And for the record, I am quite contended with where BKI is at the moment. For one, the place is still quite accessible for me to go plane spotting on ad-hoc basis. Also, you must admit it is convenient to have an airport so close, not many cities can lay claim to that nowadays :)
Finally, I would imagine that however far sighted city planners are, they can only envisage so far ahead and hope for the best. That is before other more pressing factors mess up the whole equation
tbc September 19th, 2008, 01:56 PM Far sighted planners would never position an international airport like that.
Just to elaborate on that - BKI, or rather Jesselton back in those days was not the primary gateway to Borneo west coast. Labuan had all the air connectivity then. Jesselton air strip I suppose was secondary in those days
TWK90 September 19th, 2008, 02:40 PM ^^
And, it was actually the former Japanese airfield....airlines only started operation in 1957, when the original grass landing strip was resurfaced...
Looking at that history, it was never planned as civilian airport, rather it was planned as military airfield...

pearl600 September 21st, 2008, 07:01 AM i prefer it to be near to town. imagine for those frequently outstation travellers, have to travel one hour to tuaran to take a plane. Will be too time consuming and deter ppl from visiting KK.
tbc September 21st, 2008, 01:30 PM Actually, travelling an hour to one's city's airport is not quite bad really. I would normally allocate that sort of time frame when catching flights at say KL - some places even longer. I guess it's just that we KK'ians have been spoilt for so long in this respect by having an airport so nearby :)
