Dubai-Lover April 21st, 2007, 09:29 AM Dubai International Financial Centre launches DIFC Lighthouse Tower
The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) announced the launch of DIFC Lighthouse Tower, a landmark 400-metre luxury office tower that will be constructed in the heart of the DIFC District, adjacent to the famous 'Gate' building.
United Arab Emirates: 1 hour, 50 minutes ago PRESS RELEASE
http://www.ameinfo.com/images/news/7/38747-MORNINGVIEW.jpg
Environmentally sensitive design to set benchmark for energy conservation.
The gross floor area of the project will be 90,000 square metres.
A beacon of modernity, the Lighthouse will be characterised by special external lighting features that will distinguish it from all other high-rise buildings in Dubai. As well, the approved environmentally sensitive design of the tower will include provisions for various applications for renewable energy, reduced carbon emissions and energy saving techniques.
His Excellency Dr. Omar Bin Sulaiman, Governor of DIFC, said:
'The launch of the DIFC Lighthouse Tower, the newest landmark on the skyline of Dubai comes in line with our objective with the ongoing expansion of the DIFC and concomitant growth of the emirate, this tower will help meet the burgeoning demand for high-quality office space in the heart of our thriving community.'
He continued: 'The unique design of this slender tower will make it stand out, especially at night, when the external lighting will serve, like a lighthouse, to attract the admiration of residents and visitors alike. We are particularly proud of the project's environmentally friendly and sensitive design, which will set a new benchmark for energy conservation in the region.'
malec April 21st, 2007, 11:08 AM So this will be built!
Dubai-Lover April 21st, 2007, 11:18 AM an incredibly awesome tower
but it shouldn't have too many floors, maybe 60 and the rest is steel and glass ;)
A.U.S. arch. Student April 21st, 2007, 11:22 AM The tower no doubt is awesome, but isnt the design to similar to the index?
malec April 21st, 2007, 11:31 AM This has 66 floors.
Go to http://atkinsdesign.com/ for more renders, etc.
This latest render shows a different location right next to the al fattan tower. It's where the "garden of the emirates office towers" are on my plot map. Don't know if it's just the render or if the actual location has changed.
Dubai-Lover April 21st, 2007, 12:11 PM lol, atkins says 360m and 50 floors :D
where did you get the info malec?
edit: ah, ok, the flash site has different info than the html site
chacka!!
Dubai-Lover April 21st, 2007, 12:17 PM added to emporis
and when you look closely you can see the three massive wind turbines above the building
this part alone has to be more than 100m tall!
diameter of one turbine is 29m and it has 3 of them
Naz UK April 21st, 2007, 12:25 PM I feel like investing in this one. I dunno..it's name has a nice ring to it, and seems to encourage the sub-conscious "investment" instinct in me.
Also coz it's got "Wind" turbines. These are all words one likes to hear in a tower investment opportunity.
malec April 21st, 2007, 12:34 PM It was 360m tall when it was first proposed and was also to be the world's first zero carbon emitting tower. Now it's been upped to 400m and doesn't say anything about being zero carbon emitting anymore but it does say energy consumption will be reduced.
ZZ-II April 21st, 2007, 01:24 PM The tower no doubt is awesome, but isnt the design to similar to the index?
thought the same
malec April 21st, 2007, 01:28 PM Location (I think)

R
Greg April 21st, 2007, 06:39 PM Fantastic tower.
AltinD April 21st, 2007, 06:43 PM malec, location is wrong.
malec April 21st, 2007, 07:32 PM So where is it then
dubaiflo April 21st, 2007, 07:47 PM ^^ on the right of your rendering. check the press release pic.
awesome tower. simply amazing. so happy it is approved, i love the new concepts dubai developers are doing now..
400m is of course amazing as well.
malec April 21st, 2007, 08:02 PM I don't get how the location is wrong. According to the latest renders (the 1st one on this page) the ritz carlton is right behind it and it's the same in my model as well. It can't be across the road since there's a tower in the way and well, the render doesn't show it across the road.
AltinD April 21st, 2007, 08:12 PM ^^ That's not the Ritz Carlton, that;'s the Village Center (or whatever that complex is called) and the tower is not accross the road, but just on the corner plot.
We have discussed this since last year.
AltinD April 21st, 2007, 08:26 PM The first picture clarifies everything:

... in the meantime evidence of the 400 meters figure:
http://i16.tinypic.com/2pzfm89.jpg
ZZ-II April 21st, 2007, 09:51 PM in the first pic it really doesn't look like 45m taller than ET1
AltinD April 21st, 2007, 11:02 PM ^^ Becouse that picture shows the old 60 floors, 360 meters tall version.

dubaiflo April 22nd, 2007, 05:40 AM nice clear rendering, it looks awesome.
SA boy should have the correct and exact location, can you help us?
what i would have preffered is this tower to be built in an angle to SZR; 45degrees for example, like the index and not parallel.
nzGambit April 22nd, 2007, 06:51 AM what i would have preffered is this tower to be built in an angle to SZR; 45degrees for example, like the index and not parallel.
I think they orientated the tower this way to maximise exposure to the prevailing North-Westerly sea breeze. Gotta keep those turbines turning!!
aravinda April 22nd, 2007, 08:50 AM malec, in your rendering, what's that building with a bubble like structure on its side?
malec April 22nd, 2007, 11:26 AM And an even clearer render:

nzGambit April 22nd, 2007, 12:14 PM I love how the facade-design incorporates the DIFC logo. This really is DIFC's calling-card to the world... after the Gate of course.
Gregorious April 22nd, 2007, 12:37 PM Bravo! Magnifique! This is one amazing tower!!

I totally agree with you! Space might now be an issue in the crowded DIFC area....
I am so glad this tower got approved. It looks so amazing! With this and Yaquob, we will finally have towers to offset the Burj Dubai in SZR's skyline. Its going to look awesome when completed! :D:cheers:

THE DUBAI GUYS April 27th, 2007, 02:51 PM Atkins designs green tower
CONSTRUCTION UAE
27 Apr 2007
The UK’s Atkins is working on the concept design for a low carbon emissions tower at Dubai International Financial Centre, its second major project in the region to incorporate environmentally friendly elements.
Known as the Lighthouse, the 400-metre office tower will be designed to reduce its energy consumption by up to 65 per cent and water consumption by up to 40 per cent. This will be achieved by using passive solar architecture such as awnings, a series of low energy and low water use solutions and recovery strategies for the energy and water used.
The building will also have integrated renewable energy sources, including wind turbines and 4,000 solar panels.
Meanwhile, the construction is approaching completion on the Atkins-designed Bahrain World Trade Centre, which will use wind turbines to provide up to 15 per cent of its power requirements.

luv2bebrown April 27th, 2007, 02:54 PM i keep comin back to this thread. such a classy tower. just wow.
aravinda June 7th, 2007, 12:28 PM quick question to the engineers out there: wind turbines are usually on a dual axis so they rotate to face the wind. how effective do you think this design would be? its fixed and has just one face plus the concrete structure on either side will block more of the wind flow.
AltinD June 7th, 2007, 03:25 PM ^^ Are you sure about the double axiss thing, becouse I don't think so.
dubaiflo June 8th, 2007, 02:44 AM ^^ well he is right when it comes to free standing wind turbines, but not in buildings.
aravinda June 8th, 2007, 07:24 AM well how effective do u recon it is then? Must be a thing thats highly dependant on chance, hoping the wind blows that way!
AltinD June 8th, 2007, 12:19 PM ^^ You have to consider that Dubai is a coastal city with flat terrain at the back, and winds in such enviroments usually blow only from two (oposite) directions. ;)
aravinda June 9th, 2007, 03:46 AM ^point taken.
Gregorious June 9th, 2007, 11:06 AM Isnt the building too thin? It would offer too much air resistance from one side!
AltinD June 10th, 2007, 12:44 AM ^^ Hm ... Your two sentences contradict instead of complementing each other. ;)
kasy boy June 16th, 2007, 10:32 PM i want 2 live there
AltinD June 17th, 2007, 12:55 PM ^^ But I don't think you can, since the building will have offices and commercial space only.
jixline June 17th, 2007, 02:35 PM these blades used by atkins in his designs are scary:horse:
malec July 4th, 2007, 03:43 AM When someone takes updates of DIFC could they check the site of this tower as well?

Opus 2009 October 30th, 2007, 06:52 AM From the render it seems that there is nothing between the Limestone house/ritz carlton and the Lighthouse tower. The model of the difc in the Gate building shows two short buildings facing the limestone house but assume that is out of date.
AltinD October 30th, 2007, 11:59 AM ^^ There will be The Currency House a two buildings block of 50 and 12 floors each
Opus 2009 October 30th, 2007, 12:34 PM ^^
Currency tower is the plot adjacent to the Lighthouse tower (directly opposite the ritz carlton). So there doest not seem to be anything in between the Lighthouse tower and the limestone house, other than the boulevard.
Speaking to a guy on the Aitkins stand at Cityscape, the project is out to tender. The client is Difc, so assume that the space will be for lease rather than sale.
AltinD October 30th, 2007, 05:45 PM ^^ Oops, we were just talking about two different plots. ;)
We know that the DIFC is the client since their logo is integrated on the tower's facade.

bizzybonita April 29th, 2008, 07:12 PM Atkins to speak at global forum on technology innovation in Dubai
1/APRIL/08
Atkins will be among some of the world’s most innovative companies at a major conference in Dubai this month when it presents research on the use of technology to drive innovation.
The 17th International Conference on Management of Technology, hosted by British University in Dubai (BUiD), will bring together professionals and academics to discuss how technology can be used to bring about real world change.
One of the major presentations will be from Dr Anne Kemp, Atkins Associate Director and Head of Geospatial, whose lecture will focus on the human and management challenges of rolling out new technology.
“Knowledge transfer and innovation are a central theme of the International Association for Management of Technology (IAMOT), and we are delighted to share the views and approaches of leading industry figures,” said Tim Askew, Managing Director for Atkins in the Middle East and India.
“This partnership between one of the world’s largest design and engineering consultancies and the British University reflects the important contribution that universities and businesses can make to our wider society and communities.”
The conference will bring together members of the International Association for Management of Technology (IAMOT), a world body that aims to support the creative and innovative development of technology to solve real-world business challenges.
“We’re delighted that we have been able to attract speakers from companies of the calibre Atkins. Their insights into the extent to which new technology has provided the foundation to create some of the Middle East’s most iconic developments will be enormously useful for attendees,” said Atkins Senior Lecturer and conference co-chair for IAMOT 2008, Dr Bassam Abu Hijleh.
In addition to Atkins, conference attendees will include members of IAMOT, with speakers from companies including Nakheel, Australia's GMO, Aarhuis University of Denmark, Siemens, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and the Al Maktoum Foundation.
BUiD will open the event with a series of specialised pre-conference workshops, to be held on 6th April 2008 and open to all.
The 17th International Conference on Management of Technology, ‘Creating and Managing a Knowledge Economy,’ will take place from April 6-10 at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Opus 2009 April 30th, 2008, 07:10 AM the plot in front of the Index is where the Park Towers are, and in front is the palace. I always thought the Lighthouse tower was the plot adjacent to the Currency Towers opposite the Limestone House.

Selected contractors have been invited to bid by 19 January for the contract to build the Lighthouse tower at Dubai International Finance Centre (DIFC).
The prospective bidders include the local/UK Al-Naboodah Laing O'Rourke, Lebanon's Arabian Construction Company (ACC), the local Arabtec Construction, the local/UK Dutco Balfour Beatty, and the local/Australian Nasa Multiplex.
The contract involves the construction of a 320-metre high office tower with a gross floor area of 90,000 square metres.
The tower has been designed to reduce its energy consumption by up to 65 per cent and water consumption by up to 40 per cent.
This will be achieved by using devices such as awnings, a series of low energy and low water solutions and recovery strategies for the energy and water used.
The building will also feature integrated renewable energy sources, including wind turbines and 4,000 solar panels (MEED 27:04:07).
The client is the DIFC Authority.
