Gatis April 21st, 2007, 09:14 PM Šiauliai ir unusual and great! Haven't seen such glass aplied to large surfaces.
whatever... April 22nd, 2007, 02:57 AM well it's about time... we have the best basketball school in World and yet, our clubs (except two of them) are stuck somewhere at mid, mid-lower level in europe with little possibilities to grow since there're no proper infrastructure...
Hopefully football will follow soon. Vilnius should get atleast one 30.000 seat stadium by 2009 and new training grounds in N.Vilnia, maybe even Klaipeda will move forward with that proposal. Ice hochey also cannot be forgoten considering what great potential there is in Lithuania for this sport.
BobDaBuilder April 23rd, 2007, 02:23 PM Superb edifaces, the best I have seen outside of North America. Lithuania should get the World Championships of Basketball as well.
Chilenofuturista April 23rd, 2007, 02:39 PM Good Lord...
Giedrius_LT April 23rd, 2007, 03:17 PM Superb edifaces, the best I have seen outside of North America. Lithuania should get the World Championships of Basketball as well.
We should, because we are the nation of basketball.
But you see, Lithuania is a little country, we don't have big arenas (the capacity of the largest arena will be 12.490). So if you will compare the profit of creating such a championship in some larger country and in Lithuania you will see huge difference. That's why it is hard to get the WCoB for Lithuania.
But i hope we will get it someday. We should fight for it now, till our arenas are new. Because we can't built new of them everytime.
AtlanticaC5 April 23rd, 2007, 04:38 PM Very interesting, looks like Lithuanian basketball is going through the same phase Swedish icehockey is currently in, i.e. many new modern arenas :) Will the arenas be able to host anything else than basketball (multipurpose arena, like concerts and stuff)?

As i know, yes.
whatever... April 23rd, 2007, 11:25 PM Looks like some great arenas there. Are they all gonna be used in the Basket Euro?
System of the EBC looks like this now: 4 cities/arenas host group stages, one hosts 1/8, 1/4, semifinals, "little final" and final and as far as i know, it shouldn't be significantly changed till 2011, so all theese arena's should be used for the championship purpouses
Forgot to mention earliar also that there are some dont know how much reliable rumours that Marijampole (7th biggest town in LT, ~50.000 inh.) also plans a 5000-6000 seat arena

"Arvi" the women basketball team of Marijampolė has planed to built it. But i'm not sure if they will start building it soon.
Be to, "Arvi" dar šiais metais ketina pradėti statyti naują areną“.

Giedrius_LT April 24th, 2007, 11:30 AM How come you guys like basketball and not fotboll as the rest of Europe does? :)
It's a part of our history. The part you can't remove or change. Shortly - the religion.
And don't forget European Basketball Championship 2003 in Sweden. Which country has kicked the ass of Europe there ;)
whatever... April 25th, 2007, 02:36 PM Yesterday Klaipeda arena was approved by the municipality. It will have 5300 stationary seats with possibility to extend them to 7500 at any given time. The cost is ~105 mln. LT (30 mln. euros)

Giedrius_LT April 26th, 2007, 07:08 PM Is Lt the best country at basketball right now?
In my heart - yes. But for FIBA - no.

Giedrius_LT April 26th, 2007, 07:15 PM Yugoslavia exists for them?
In Lithuanian forum we said the same thing, it's about time to change that to Serbia. But i think Serbians should write there by themselfs or maybe they simply don't care.
whatever... April 26th, 2007, 08:12 PM Yugoslavia exists for them?
Fiba counts the points every country had earned using it's results from last 8 years (2 olympic cicles), and since a country called Yugoslavia wonn EC and WC in 2001-2002, it's still up there... It should be renamed into Serbia and Montenegro in 2011 and finally into Serbia only in 2013 :)
Anyway, just as FIFA ranking, it's rather untrustable - EC (european championship) is toughest competition only to Olympics, yet compared to WC (world championship) where various ridiculous african and asian countries participate, point ratio received is EC:WC - 1:5
Lithuania should be atleast in top6 for Women and Men also should be a place or two higher
Llinass April 27th, 2007, 06:55 AM Thank you for this  tread Giedrius.
Yes we are the best at basketball right now and hope we will always be :)
Jarmo K May 12th, 2007, 02:52 AM daaaaamn! i've totally missed this thread!
i have to say - kaunas and šiauliai arenas are fantastic! (: too bad vilnius' arana got such "suburb mall" architecture...
whatever... May 16th, 2007, 01:26 PM Panevezys municipality signed a deal with contractor "Panevezio statybos trestas" yesterday, construction of Panevezys arena shall begin shortly and it should be opened in 2008, 1st of September.

mlm July 27th, 2007, 10:28 AM /\ Looks quite nice. Would it be possible to play Icehockey there, and what would the capacity be?
whatever... July 27th, 2007, 01:31 PM ^^ Highly doubt about that possibility in Siauliai arena, atleast defenetly not possible for ice size of european standarts, for american/canadian maybe. Capacity of Siauliai arena is 5300 - enough fo eurobasket group stages and Uleb cup (Uefa cup equivalent in basketball), where the local club will participate next year.
Siemens arena in Vilnius already hosted some ice-hockey games (capacity with european ice - 9.000). There is also a separate ~4.000 seat rather recently built ice-hochey arena in Vilnius.
Kaunas arena shall also be able to host hockey games when built.
............................................................................................
Construction of Panevezys arena had already started.
..............................................................................
Kaunas municipality rejected the french proposal and terminated the contract they had and may now face some dificulties. Instead Kaunas decided to move on with a less costly but still rather decent proposal of Lith' architect E. Miliunas.
According to the architect, the arena will have ~15,000 seats (instead of 12,500 in french proposal) and should cost less than 200mln. Litas (~58mln. euros)

Gatis July 27th, 2007, 04:27 PM That one in Siauliai is great! Congratulations!!!
BobDaBuilder July 30th, 2007, 03:23 AM Now Siauliai's hoops team can play in European competitions. There was a problem a few years back where their old stadium was too small for European standards.
p.s. Amusing how Russia is ranked 18th in basketball, worse than New Zealand!
Llinass February 11th, 2008, 08:23 PM Klaipėda's Arena

Big Cat December 9th, 2008, 05:56 PM Giedrius, I have one question in my mind quite for a long time. Maybe you know, whether they are going to finish "Cido arena" and to cover that unclosed concrete or to leave it as it stands now?
Mantas December 10th, 2008, 04:32 PM Cido arena in Panevėžys is finished for a while already, isn't it? :)
Big Cat December 10th, 2008, 04:52 PM Well, probably my question was badly constructed :) Sure, its finished for a while. But that concrete is left un-closed. And it looks so terrible. So, I am wondering whether were are some plans to close it or are they planning to leave it as it stands now.

Not bad at all. Just the whole atmosphere in the arena looks a little bit to dark. Maybe they are just economizing the money.
BobDaBuilder December 11th, 2008, 02:26 AM Are they still going to build a football stadium in Vilnius, in particular for the staging of internationals? Shame it won't be ready for next years qualifiers. The Lithos are a real chance to make it.
Incidently, how hard is it to get tickets for internationals in LT? The stadiums seem quite small in capacity so there must be hefty demand.
It would be good to see Lithuania take the sword to the likes of a France or an England.
Big Cat December 11th, 2008, 09:01 PM BobDaBuilder, thanks for supporting Lithos :)
Yes, finally we are building our National stadium!

I will write more about it later - on Scandi/Baltic stadiums (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=29256390#post29256390).
Concerning football tickets, probably most of them it is possible to buy on-line - using Bilietai.lt (http://www.bilietai.lt/axtweb/view/evt-list/3-en-n-n-40-all------n). As it was in a case of Lithuania-Austria football match.
Talking about our football stadiums they are evil  Better wait till we'll built National stadium. Hope our government will give more money in this budgetary year for building it.
Triceratops December 12th, 2008, 04:57 PM ^^ OMG, how many cranes! Way to go Lithuania! First modern and big stadium in the Baltics! Congrats!

Giedrius_LT May 11th, 2009, 12:12 AM are they going to build up the whole island?
There a various talks under consideration, but probably the remaining part of the island will be adjusted for the public purposes. Something like a park etc.
And I wouldn't like to see this place totally urbanized. Take a look at Kaunas map, you will see that the arena will be located in the very center of the city:
http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/qq195/Giedrius_LT/Kaunozemelapis.jpg
So it would be nice to have some "green" area nearby there.
Triceratops May 11th, 2009, 12:42 PM ^^ yeah, I see, the location is superb, Kaunas has lots of perspectives to develop! :)

most definitely not final. as Miliūnas has stated in various interviews - he's still looking for the right exterior look.
