PENANG: Penang may soon have a theme park, complete with a roller coaster and other fun rides similar to those in Genting High-lands.
State Tourism Development and Environment Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said the state had endorsed a proposal by a Japanese company to set up the theme park on a 3.2ha site near the Auto City in Juru.
He said the company had expres-sed interest in setting up the park on the privately owned land due to its accessible location.
“The theme park will have 28 different attractions, some of them similar to the ones we have in Genting,” Teng elaborated.
“The state government wel-comes the idea of a theme park as it will be a new tourism product for the state. We gave our endorse-ment last week during the tourism product committee meeting.
“However, the company must seek approval from DOSH (Depart-ment of Occupational Safety and Health), the local authorities and the Customs Department. DOSH will be looking into the safety of the equipment.”
Teng was speaking to newsmen after jointly opening the Thai Song-kran festival 2007 with Deputy Consul General of Thailand Wasin Dhamavasi at Queensbay Mall yes-terday. The two-week festival was jointly organised by Kenlink and Alila Star Enterprise.
Teng said the state government was willing to promote the Songkran Festival on a larger scale.
“The state has supported the Ja-panese Bon Odori events. Similarly, we will also support Thai traditio-nal festivals,” he said.
Alila Star managing director Siri-nya Koram said many Thai people, especially those from South Thail-and would be attracted to visit Penang.
“South Thailand has many at-tractions but because of the unrest, it is becoming difficult for us to attract foreign tourists,” he said.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang’s first theme park is scheduled to be opened by year-end.
Similar to Genting Highlands and the Sunway Lagoon Resort in Selangor, the park will offer more than 30 attractions to visitors.
State Tourism Development and Environment Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said the theme park would be built on a 3.2ha site next to Juru Auto City on the mainland.
The project is being undertaken by a Japanese company, together with the state tourism committee.
"The company is applying for approvals, including from the Department of Safety and Health and the Seberang Prai Municipal Council.
"If all goes as planned, we will have our first theme park by the end of this year," he said after launching the Songkran Festival at the Queensbay Mall in Bayan Baru here yesterday.
Teng said the two-week Thai new year festival, which began yesterday, would not only help strengthen ties between Thailand and Malaysia but would also boost tourism between the countries.
Deputy consul-general of Thailand in Penang, Wasin Dhamavasi, also attended the event.

TYW April 28th, 2007, 06:21 AM about the topic, it was mentioned before that there are 2 proposed theme parks, one in Pulau Jerejak and another near Teluk Kumbar. since this theme park is being built, i wonder if the other 2 will still go on??
BTW, isn't 3.2ha quite small?? hope it is not some Pesta-like thingy... and i hope it is a air conditioned theme park, coz look at our weather :D
jlshyang April 28th, 2007, 05:25 PM Do we need a theme park? I have a feeling it will become abandoned soon, not being pessimistic or what but i just don't think any theme park will sustain in our tropical climate.
tomkat April 28th, 2007, 06:20 PM Isn't 3.2 ha a little bit too small for a theme park. For comparison, KLCC park is 20 ha.
Magician April 28th, 2007, 07:49 PM haha... that's penang style...
TYW April 29th, 2007, 10:52 AM haha... that's penang style...

I think we don't really have many choices, even DAP doesn't seem to have a strong leader in Penang.
OshHisham April 30th, 2007, 11:52 AM Isn't 3.2 ha a little bit too small for a theme park. For comparison, KLCC park is 20 ha.
it's rather called..."taman permainan kanak-kanak"

how about PKR?
jlshyang April 30th, 2007, 01:00 PM how about PKR?
PKR is very weak over on Penang Island itself.
TYW April 30th, 2007, 01:02 PM it's rather called..."taman permainan kanak-kanak"
:lol::lol:
we have to get used to the taman i think
jlshyang May 1st, 2007, 07:20 AM :lol::lol:

I prefer the taman kanak-kanak to some huge theme park which will fail in a year or two then turned into some cheapo place  If they have so many vacant land please build more housing for the middle class and upper middle class, we are in need of those sort of housing but the state government kept on approving those high-end condominiums. At least low-cost housing are built in abundance along the Jelutong Expressway if not very few Penangites will be able to own new houses!
Even houses as far as Sungai Ara are going for RM 400,000 ++ now! Grr!

agree about the taman thing! i think Province Wellesley lack parks. building a park there is a better idea than the "taman permainan"
about the high end condominiums, i often read in the newspapers that the demand is high. if those mega projects are carried out quickly, i believe this trend will continue.
actually i hate the idea of building low cost buildings along Jelutong expressway. i mean, the coastline should be a prime property. building low cost buildings there is like relocating a beggar to a condominium rather than a flat. i really find this weird as all the developers of those seaside cities are snatching the coastline for high end property. one crazy example is Dubai. see the amount of new coastline it gets from those Palm Jumeirah, Jabel Ali, Deira, The world and so many more. other examples are Gold Coast and Panamá city, where the city actually grows along the coast:yes: yet, how amusing, we are throwing the coastline away for low cost housing  i think low cost buildings should be built elsewhere where it's more suitable like Farlim, Relau, Paya Terubong for example.

Exactly! I was waiting for more upper-middle-end apartments and condominiums to be built along JE after we missed out on Bayswater but it is lined with the low-cost flats. At least build better looking low cost flats also la, all of them look like commie blocks and it gives a bad first impression for visitors who drive coz JE is a primary highway from Penang Bridge to Georgetown. All the time i am bombarded with questions from outstation friends about the rational of building commie blocks along the scenic coastal road.
Pablo May 2nd, 2007, 03:08 AM JE wheregot all low cost...??? so far all the projects has been carried out are middle cost with swimming pool...but of course they are a few, is low coat..and there are a few is high cost too...just that the design is not nice...
cng1974 May 2nd, 2007, 06:52 AM in fact, Government doesn't approve the project without the low cost houses.. The government policy is avoid giving people an impression of big living standard difference. So every new area or new development project will come with low cost houses too although the developer usually target middle, middle upper or upper (since better profit)..

Most of them are low-cost isn't it or at least they all look like low-cost. Horrible squarish commie block designs:ohno:

Well, think most the project that completed is low or middle class only as IJM was built the replacement home for those people give way for the JE. However, the middle upper project The Spring in progress..

Hmm...you have a point. Probably part of their agreement not to relocate them to somewhere far from where they were. Anyway, check out the Infrastucture and Mobility Thread under Malaysian Highways, a foreigner just said those apartments look like commieblocks and it's depressing!
TYW May 2nd, 2007, 08:59 AM ^^ well, you have a point, cng1974. i think those low cost houses should be built on the inner part of the expressway, not by the coast like what's happening now.

Just paint them in peach color and they'll look several RM nicer.
