khayam June 12th, 2006, 07:30 AM can anyone tell when the google earth database on lebanon was constructed? I have a feeling it is at least a few months old (if not more)... can anyone who lives in Lebanon and follows the projects give us an estimate?
Nadini June 12th, 2006, 07:53 AM ^^ i would say end of summer, cuz if im not mistaken Beirut Tower was under construction in early september and it does not appear in google earth, so i would say since summer
grzes June 12th, 2006, 07:59 AM awww. i wanna see..how long does the download take here in lebanon?
Just in case you haven't gotten it yet, (i'm hoping this is correct, it's after a bit of research) Terranet or Cyberia who both offer broadband should be able to download it in 2-4 minutes (my best guess). It took me about 45 seconds, but I'm not in Lebanon, and I am using high speed broadband. Hope this helps :)
nareg June 12th, 2006, 08:13 AM Since 15th of February, 2005!
I found many factors.
Beirut Tower has no shade.
Beirut Hilton is on its foundations.
The road near Virgin Megastore is still open. (You can see cars over there)
The place where former PM Hariri was buried does not exist yet.
The bridge they are constructing near Geant CITY MALL does not appear.
The date is found here (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/lebanon/beirut-pix.htm)
The images from Google Earth and the website are the same.
Beiruti June 12th, 2006, 08:21 AM ^^ Wow that's amazing, the day following the assassination...
Jayme June 12th, 2006, 09:28 AM i cant c city Mall

Thanks a lot man, that was really helpful... That explains why the explosion crater can still be seen!
I could also add that the souks were still in their initial phase of construction.
A couple of questions, if you or anyone else knows:
-follow the highway being built between Sidon and Tyr, it stops somewhere around 10Km from Tyr, you can see the construction of a couple of bridges and at some point, and then the highway abruptly ends. Do you have any idea whether the construction is still in that phase or if it has advanced?
-Do these images get updated on Google earth? i.e. are we gonna be stuck with these images for the forseeable future or does the software get new imagery every once and a while? if yes, any idea on how often that happens? (is it in the years, motnhs etc..)???
nareg June 12th, 2006, 10:13 AM i cant c city Mall
dose anyone know where it is
Do a search in the Fly To tab. Enter this value 33.89744, 35.564787 in the box and hit search. City Mall is the result.

Yes, they get updated every once in a while as long as new imagery is available and Google takes the time and effort to get access to them.
Jayme June 12th, 2006, 11:11 AM Thanks naregkar
Jayme June 12th, 2006, 11:16 AM how do u know all those numbers
Jayme June 12th, 2006, 11:22 AM so city mall is the Largest shoping center in Lebanon
nareg June 12th, 2006, 11:48 AM how do u know all those numbers
I don't know them by hard. I locate them.
To do that, first of all you need to change a setting from the Options.
To do that, go to Tools, click Options in the menu.
A dialogue box appears, there in the Rendering box there is the option Lat/Lon. Choose the Degrees radio button.
Click Apply Settings followed by OK.
Now, when you move the mouse pointer on the map, below in the status bar you'll see pointer and decimal numbers, one is lat and the other is lon. (If the status bar is not appearing, go to View and click Status Bar)
Write those numbers in the Fly To search box.
The format of writing is like this: #lat, #lon
Make sure that you place at least 4 digits after the decimal point to reach to the precise location.

 It must me psycho-something. I posted today (or rather yesterday) the same picture to Polish "guess the place" thread here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=8860083&postcount=245).
But please, don't participate the thread now. It would be unfair ;)
BTW. I just have been reading Polish thread about baloondrome (http://www.balonodrom.com) which is Polish patent (from 2001). The last post there says the patent was bought by "some Arabs". Do you think Beiruti implementation can be connected with that patent (they also posted there information about similar attraction in Berlin). The full patent says about "rotunda" built arround the baloon landing place to make it more architecturally neutral.
Nadini June 14th, 2006, 02:18 AM The people that built the helium balloon in Beirut is a french company called aerophile.
http://www.aerophile.com/pages_us/index.php
Maybe they're building one in Poland to, they build helium balloons around the world

Tabouleh March 16th, 2007, 07:40 AM First, I hope I am doing this thread in the right location! Anyway, here goes:
I was on Google earth and I was clicking to see the Panoramio pictures in Beirut, and all I could see are mainly pictures from a user named VEE. His pictures are almost exclusively about destroyed or extremely ugly buildings and scenes. :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:
So I though I would write a plea to everyone here to get an account and post as many pictures as they can in google earth to minimize the impact and give a real picture of Beirut as it is done in skscrapercity!!! Just look at a couple of pictures and you will see what I mean. If we keep in mind that google earth is one of the most used internet available software on the net, we can see the impact this will have as an image campaign. So let's post pictures everyone!
mahdial_x5 March 16th, 2007, 08:01 AM ^^hey man! :bash: you are absolutely corect!
what a jackass! although there are many others photographers as well, he has MANY and all about the Israel war ect ect
:ohno:
ill post some pics, 'that i will steal' from here :tongue4:
Jayme March 16th, 2007, 08:04 AM ^^ how do you become a member of google earth and post pics ?
zouz March 16th, 2007, 09:55 AM im glad someone brought this up ... what is wif all the war torn photos of lebanon posted on the web ... i guess tehre are some pl out there that cant accept the fact that Lebanon is a beautiful country... plzzz let us know how i can help ...???
Hassoun March 16th, 2007, 02:34 PM yeah,me too plz,how can we help??????
nareg March 16th, 2007, 03:26 PM That seems to be a good idea Tabouleh!
ill post some pics, 'that i will steal' from here :tongue4:
Before taking any action, you have to ask the picture's owner whether the latter accepts his picture to be posted or not. I really insist on this.
Beiruti March 16th, 2007, 05:26 PM Thank you for addressing this issue Tabouli, we should all consider doing something about this.
mahdial_x5 March 16th, 2007, 05:32 PM That seems to be a good idea Tabouleh!

yes i will for sure
using some of your wonderful pictures perhaps? if you allow?
:D
nareg March 16th, 2007, 05:46 PM ^^ I'm sorry but I prefer no one to use my pictures.
mahdial_x5 March 16th, 2007, 06:16 PM ^^ yes SIR
Tabouleh March 17th, 2007, 05:06 AM From what I saw on panoramio, it just uploading the picture normaly... Doesn't seam to be a time consuming process... As for the pictures, what I suggest is that everyone who has taken pictures themselves and want to promote a better image for Lebanon, should post their own picture on it. For example, if Nareg wants, he posts his own pictures. Same applies for all the wonderful pictures that are posted by Nadini, Beirut or Hassoun on the '' Links to Lebanon-related threads at SSC''. We don't want any copyright problems or issues, so please be carefull what you post!! Still the best thing to do is according to me have all the pictures that would be ok to use be placed in this thread so we can all make sure that the person who took it approves... Wat do you all think?
Also to answer the questions on how do we become a member:
click on the Panoramio icons in google earth when you are viewing Beirut
(first activate geographic web in the primary database in the left toolbar, the you wil see the little blue and white circles with a little blue X in the middle)
when you click and image will open, click on the link under it to upload your pictures. you subscribe to an account (email, name and password VERY SIMPLE) then you browse your pc for the image.
ET VOILA!!
Tabouleh March 17th, 2007, 05:45 AM You won't believe this!!! I wrote a comment to the guy who had posted all the ugly pics yesterday... He almost removed them all!!!! only 3 pictures of destroyed buildings remain!!!! YEY!!!
Beiruti March 17th, 2007, 06:14 AM ^^ Good job! I noticed that they were mostly gone and was wondering what you were referring too...now it makes sense, thanks!
Hassoun March 17th, 2007, 01:36 PM Gr8 job tabouleh ;) Way to GO :)
Jayme March 18th, 2007, 12:28 AM As for the pictures, what I suggest is that everyone who has taken pictures themselves and want to promote a better image for Lebanon, should post their own picture on it.
awwww i dont live in Lebanon and i only go there every 2 or 3 years
Lirtain March 23rd, 2007, 09:30 AM It's good that you raised this topic Tabouleh, because similarly in Wikipedia in the article about Beirut there is one outdated pic from the pre-renovation period showing war damage. I already added 3 pics there to show the beautiful Beirut and will probably add more pics..
Phoenician Empire March 25th, 2007, 02:37 PM You won't believe this!!! I wrote a comment to the guy who had posted all the ugly pics yesterday... He almost removed them all!!!! only 3 pictures of destroyed buildings remain!!!! YEY!!!

john2890 April 23rd, 2007, 09:47 PM Does anyone know wether it's possible to update beirut's google-earth, putting roads and streets and the names of areas/districts etc...? making the whole thing official, coz it sucks having to rely on people's comments to find out which district is which.
after checking google earth, you know the coast line near the beirut golf club, Ouazi i think, is this a shanty town area? coz it looks like it from above, and if you check the picture that's been uploaded on the golf club, you'll see bit's of it. are there any plans to do anything about this area? specialy since it's taking up alot of the coast (2.5km of sandy beach i believe), anyone got any idea of the population in that area? and perhaps the average elevation of the buildings(roughly how many floors). are the people living legaly there? as in, are the buildings registered?
Beiruti April 24th, 2007, 06:25 AM FYI: I merged all of the GoogleEarth-related threads.

Maybe that will help you out...
nareg June 3rd, 2007, 08:43 AM IMPORTANT UPDATE
Google Earth has updated its database. Beirut has a new look.
http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/6840/earthnewupdateiq3.jpg
Now, I do not know when it was updated but by analysing we can find that:
Platinum Tower (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=354432) is more or less the same height as Monroe Hotel.
Construction for Merit Corporation/CMA-CGM Headquarters (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=426960) has not started.
The crater caused by the Feb. 14, 2005 bomb is still there.
Therefore, all these facts along with others suggest that the satellite image is at least 3 or 4 months old.
AmeriLEB June 3rd, 2007, 09:07 AM It looks liek the "lake" is getting filled..see that projection from the road (middle water)? i dont think that was there
Nadini June 3rd, 2007, 02:36 PM ^^ yep that was there before, they did quite the opposite, there was a road but they took it off.... interesting

I was wondering if some portions of the city were taken at different times. Your picture shows dates the area was taken. I was like how can the AUB Green field (which is brown dirt in the SAT) and no student center built...while Platinum tower is over the Monroe??? One other observation- the damn tents!!! did anyone notice all the landscaping destroyed? Loook at Gibran garden (in front of the UN) BROWN!!
Nadini- That is interesting about the road..they did take it off but that finger isnt there b4..i know there making headway ..just put another sorting facity in place..i am waiting on the Solidere Annual..BTW they didnt acheive quorum for there annual meeting and reset a date for the 22nd..after this meeting it will be posted
Nadini June 3rd, 2007, 05:57 PM ^^ to ur first question, that wouldnt make sense cuz the Kempisky Hotel is in its foundation (raouche area) and I dont see a recent date on it.
now to the other... what finger? lool
AmeriLEB June 3rd, 2007, 06:23 PM http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb2/Htlebmn/Newland.jpg
I dont know how to get the arrow..but this thing in the middle of the water (where the click a pic button is)..Also, i think that different quadrants of the city are taklen at different times...they do an overlay. Like i said the AUB student center should have been close to done..and its not even built in the picture. Its possible that Kempinski is more current or old and more advanced than the pic shows lol
nareg June 3rd, 2007, 06:30 PM I was like how can the AUB Green field (which is brown dirt in the SAT) and no student center built...while Platinum tower is over the Monroe??? One other observation- the damn tents!!! did anyone notice all the landscaping destroyed?
To the best of my knowledge, Greater Beirut is updated [as a whole]. What makes my assumption true is the fact that in case they updated only some parts, the difference between the satellite images will undoubtedly be significant (you will see difference in layers).
As for AUB, the Green Field was changed to brown dirt before the beginning of the construction of AUB Charles W. Hostler Student Center (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=472113).
Phoenician Empire September 17th, 2007, 07:31 PM Massive Google Maps Update Adds 54 New Countries
Google Maps has added coverage for a whopping 54 new countries. The additions more than double the coverage in Latin America and triple Google Maps' Asian offerings.
Some will no doubt be disappointed to note that much of the additional coverage is limited to highways and major roads, and, worse, some data is outdated and inaccurate, but the Google LatLong Blog promises this “is just the beginning.” The post goes on to say that in the coming months Google plans to add more detail to the existing countries in Google Maps, as well as more new countries.
Here’s the full list of new countries: Afghanistan, Aruba, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belize, Bermuda, Brunei Darussalam, Bhutan, Bolivia, Cambodia, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Fiji, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Laos, Lebanon, Mexico, Myanmar (Burma), Mongolia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Oman, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Timor-Leste, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam and Yemen.

Hassoun October 10th, 2009, 11:25 AM ^^ :applause:
Beiruti October 10th, 2009, 04:48 PM These updates are truly amazing - but WHY the Murr???? That monstrosity needs to be demolished, not glorified on GoogleEarth as if it is one of our landmarks!
Abdallah K. November 12th, 2009, 10:14 PM Marina Tower should be ready by sometime next week, so we will have the Marina Tower on Google Earth, and "Al Madina El Ryiddia" in Beirut is being redesigned and re uploaded

Abdallah K. November 20th, 2009, 12:54 PM Marina Tower looks awesome! Great job! But who is "we"?
Me and a guy named Young Modeler (hes from Beirut), I actually didnt do much of the Marina Tower but I will do most of the virgin mega store building if we make it
Beiruti November 21st, 2009, 03:31 AM ^^ They look awesome, but PLEASE do not do the old Holiday Inn! Just like the Murr, I dont think we should be glorifying these eye-sores as if they are landmarks. I say the Platinum should be next!!!
Abdallah K. November 21st, 2009, 05:01 AM ^^ We did Honestly consider the Platinum but we think it might not be accepted into Google Earth because it still looks under construction on the satellite images. We will not do the Holiday Inn now, we are thinking of: Virgin Mega Store, UFA building, or the Habtoor Hotel any one have suggestions?
Lebanese Cedar November 21st, 2009, 07:15 AM ^^Habtoor would be great along with the Metropolitan Palace that is right next to it.
CharoogAjram November 22nd, 2009, 08:35 PM Abdallah, great job with the Marina Tower! It looks really good! I agree with Lebanese_Cedar, Habtoor/Metroplitan would be nice.
Or Le Gray?
AmeriLEB November 24th, 2009, 03:39 AM When will they update the images? so old
Lirtain December 17th, 2009, 04:14 AM ^^ It's been updated and it looks good :)

Abdallah K. December 17th, 2009, 04:17 AM ^^ the whole country!? or just Beirut
Lirtain December 17th, 2009, 04:28 AM ^^ It looks like only Beirut and the surrounding areas were updated. You can check it out. The date is displayed on the lower left hand side.
Nadini December 17th, 2009, 05:58 AM ^^ quite an update and the quality is pristine, notice the huge pool on the roof of the four season's hotel, the many plots around the now flattened carlton hotel, how clean and white ramlet el baida looks, the landscaping around horizon tower, reclaimed land, how busy the port is (Boats are all over the docks) and to tell u the truth if you scroll around the city, you see a lot of greenery. The city is rebuilding slowly but surely, so many improvements since last update.
Jayme December 17th, 2009, 06:21 AM I really need to download google earth again !
Lebanese Cedar December 17th, 2009, 06:34 AM ^^Thanks for the update. The imagery is from August 31. That's great! Much better than the December 2006 imagery we previously had.
Up until now, the newest imagery I found for BEY is from April 21, 2009 but it's paid imagery.
dhamoudi December 17th, 2009, 08:08 AM ^^ quite an update and the quality is pristine, notice the huge pool on the roof of the four season's hotel, the many plots around the now flattened carlton hotel, how clean and white ramlet el baida looks, the landscaping around horizon tower, reclaimed land, how busy the port is (Boats are all over the docks) and to tell u the truth if you scroll around the city, you see a lot of greenery. Indeed. It looks very green in some areas. And the date is in August.
Guys, look at the 2006 photo and the new one, there are so many new interchanges on the roads, new buildings in the Dahye and so on.
Beirut is on the right way I hope! Very good progress
Lebanese Cedar December 17th, 2009, 08:55 AM Just look at the activity in the port. Absolutely wonderful.
There are also some nice changes in the airport, such as the new general aviation hangars.
Of course it's great to see the new development in the BCD.
Beiruti December 17th, 2009, 05:59 PM ^^Thanks for the update. The imagery is from August 31. That's great! Much better than the December 2006 imagery we previously had.
Up until now, the newest imagery I found for BEY is from April 21, 2009 but it's paid imagery.
I prefer the winter images because there is much more greenery.
Nevertheless, this update is fantastic and long over-due.

Lebanese Cedar December 18th, 2009, 12:01 AM ^^That's pretty impressive.
R9_ December 18th, 2009, 12:19 AM That area has progressed way faster than any other part of Lebanon.
yes, that's very impressive
Lebanese Cedar December 18th, 2009, 02:07 AM There is some additional imagery that has been added. If you go into Historical Imagery mode, there is now imagery from February 2008 and from April and May of this year.
Jayme December 19th, 2009, 12:37 AM I wanna see street view of that area rebuilt.
Abdallah K. December 19th, 2009, 12:48 AM ^^ street view is not available is Lebanon but I am sure there are photos somewhere
Jayme December 19th, 2009, 05:38 AM I know its not available....trying to find photos of that area is really hard.
Abdallah K. January 8th, 2010, 10:47 PM Alot of models have been made recently, and here are some, all of them by Ali Ezzo and 1 by request from me. Monroe Hotel is coming up next and thats a collaboration between Ali Ezzo and Me.

Young.Modeler January 16th, 2010, 06:28 PM Guess who ! Its me Ali Ezzo, AKA Young.Modeler here to tell good work on this site and thx for the exposure. Trust me, 3d models in Beirut right now are just a tip of the iceberg. expect to see 1 model a day uploaded to the warehouse. & in case of the monroe hotel, I'm getting there, but Im not quite there yet. ! cheers
Young.Modeler January 16th, 2010, 06:34 PM These updates are truly amazing - but WHY the Murr???? That monstrosity needs to be demolished, not glorified on GoogleEarth as if it is one of our landmarks!
I did the murr tower cuz wether we like it or not it does represnet one of our lankdmarks. if you go to my models page in the 3d warehouse you will see now over 20 models waiting to be accepted in a week or so. 1 model per day is the current average . Abdallah has been helping me a lot providing a lot of images. Thanks man !
Young.Modeler January 16th, 2010, 06:37 PM Here is a link:http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?uq=17519531259341958137&scoring=m
Young.Modeler January 16th, 2010, 06:45 PM Oh yeah forgot to tell you guys, I am doing a project in Beirut which will increase the models number in Beirut, Lebanon making the grand total around 130--->200 models in google earth. 1 model per day. I will consider any requests as long as you can provide or find me photos of that building from ->ALL<- sides. thanks for the incredible comments , Ali Ezzo :)
Young.Modeler January 16th, 2010, 11:21 PM Hello people, I really need pictures of the SODECO square building can anyone find some ?? cuz I want to model it in GOOGLE EARTH. thankyou !!
Rabih January 17th, 2010, 07:37 PM The only place i can think of where you might find images of the Sodeco Sq is the completed buildings thread http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=388877
Young.Modeler January 18th, 2010, 01:11 PM Thanks dude, I havent found the pics yet but very very useful !!

Beiruti February 11th, 2010, 04:30 PM ^^ Awesome! But wont all these "green" plots (with exception of the parks) be under construction eventually? Has construction been moving slow?
Abdallah K. February 11th, 2010, 04:57 PM ^^ Eventually, Yes. But construction of Buildings has been slowing down a bit in the New District, so its going to take a long time until all those green plots get filled
Abdallah K. February 12th, 2010, 02:53 AM Updates: Beirut now contains over 55 models (and more to come) due to the work of Young Modeler (Ali Ezzo) and Me

Beiruti February 12th, 2010, 03:39 PM Looks amazing! when can we expect the rest of the waterfront tower models? There should be plenty of pics of those from all angles.
Abdallah K. February 12th, 2010, 05:00 PM ^^ 4 seasons hotel should be ready in a few days, The Platinum Tower was modeled but not accepted into Google Earth for some unknown reason
Beiruti February 12th, 2010, 05:15 PM ^^ What is the process for being accepted? Can it be re-submitted later? That is one of the most iconic buildings currently in the capital and needs to have a 3d model!
Lebanese Cedar February 12th, 2010, 08:10 PM Excellent effort!
Could your friend redo the Beirut Airport terminal model? The one there isn't very accurate.
Abdallah K. February 12th, 2010, 10:11 PM ^^ We didnt do that model. A guy named Omar did and he isnt that good at it
Young-Modeler2.0 February 13th, 2010, 12:21 AM Hello people, I am Abdallah's friend who models buildings for Google Earth. I had a previous account but for some reason it doesnt allow me to do anything...
Anyways,
I've resubmitted the Platinum Tower for review and it should be accepted by next week.
The reason for the rejection was a screwed up texturing in the inner side of the model, however all is fixed now and there should be no problem what so ever.
I am planning to do the 4 seasons hotel building next to the Marina Tower. Ive collected enough photos to model it and a model should be ready sometime next week.
Also Im planning to do:
-Beirut Tower
-Monroe Hotel
-Marina Gardens
-Bahri Building
Many more models are yet to come as I am doing a project that involves up to 110 models.
With the aid of Abdallah we can upgrade the Google Earth status in Lebanon.
Regarding the Beirut International Airport, I would be happy to submit a better model than the one currently in Google Earth, but I really need photos of the Airport ASAP...
And Abdallah congrats on the Tripoli update, I just have to re-position my models there !

Young-Modeler2.0 February 15th, 2010, 01:19 PM Hey, my attention was recently drawn to Microsoft's go at Satelite imagery. I went into Beirut and here's what I think:
-Much much slower than Google Earth
-Impractical
-Low resolution imagery
-Low quality terrain detection
-Runs from your browser, you cannot work offline
-Very very old imagery (10 years ago or so)
---------------------------------------------------
-*As you can see here, the Marina Tower is not visible, most of the Marina district has not started construction, the Marina Yacht Club imagery is very outdated:

BTW: Do you model .sc4 3D Models files for simcity 4?
Young-Modeler2.0 February 15th, 2010, 07:47 PM Hmm, I thought im the only one who cant see them !! Doesnt Picasa work on SSC ?
Thankyou for your comments however,
I've never heard of these models you are talking about, but I'll be happy to get more information please do explain further :D
Beiruti February 15th, 2010, 09:15 PM ^^ The link needs to be .jpg to be embedded.
Young-Modeler2.0 February 15th, 2010, 10:43 PM I just add .jpg to the end of the link ? cuz Ive tried that, didn't seem to work...
Lebanese Cedar February 15th, 2010, 11:08 PM Excellent effort Young-Modeler2.0, thanks!
I noticed on your Phoenicia model that you did not include the two new towers that opened 5 years ago that contain long-term residential suites, are you planning on adding them?
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss61/budkheir/inter.jpg
Beiruti February 16th, 2010, 02:48 AM I just add .jpg to the end of the link ? cuz Ive tried that, didn't seem to work...
No, it doesnt work like that. You need to right click on the pic itself and go to Properties. Then you copy/paste the URL which will have a .jpg on the end.
Young-Modeler2.0 February 16th, 2010, 03:14 PM I noticed on your Phoenicia model that you did not include the two new towers that opened 5 years ago that contain long-term residential suites, are you planning on adding them?
I didn't really know that those towers where part of the Hotel !! Once I find the correct photos I will surely add them to the model, thankyou for your attention !

This model is not only looks cartoon-ish but its not even close to accurate. Can this be re-done?
Young-Modeler2.0 February 17th, 2010, 01:04 AM ^^ I could be wrong, but I dont think nightime photos work.
Night photos would work if they have enough light in them - then all I have to do is pump up the brightness and intensify the contrast.
Thanks a big bunch Lebanese Cedar, you have solved one of the delimas of my life !
Regarding the Sidon Marine Castle:
I have been planning to redo the model we have currently in Google Earth. I have found lots of photos of the thing but it would take me a lot of research to find out the real structure and complexity of the fort. For it is very hard to do such things because of thier sheer complex design. I am going to submit a better model eventually, I mean I cant let low quality models like that represent the icons of our country I just got to find the time.
Once the 3d project in Beirut is completed (expected to be completed in May 2010) I will have lots of time for doing models like this.
melkart February 17th, 2010, 03:39 AM I didn't really know that those towers where part of the Hotel !! Once I find the correct photos I will surely add them to the model, thankyou for your attention !
Do you work from plans? or do you estimate the scale based on photos and aerials?
Young-Modeler2.0 February 17th, 2010, 10:04 AM ^^ It is really a combination of both. You measure the width of the structure from aerial photos and thus conclude the height by an equation of rationality. But, I try to collect as many information as possible about the dimensions of the structure and its elements. In the case of the Phonecia Hotel, I researched a lot to find photos of the hotel and its elements, but unfortunately the info on the web was outdated in this particular case so I had no idea about the said new towers in the hotel added just 5 years ago.
I am right now in the procces of finding photos of the "new" towers, but if I eventually dont, I must go down there and take the photos my-self, which could be very troublesome especially in Lebanon...
melkart February 17th, 2010, 03:24 PM how do you upload a sketchup model to google earth?
Young-Modeler2.0 February 17th, 2010, 04:21 PM how do you upload a sketchup model to google earth?
Here's the procces:
1-Download the required CAD application developed by Google. It is called Google Sketchup, you can download it http://sketchup.google.com/
2-You can view the video tourtails they offer at the website to learn the basics. After you do that, you just have to keep practicing and experimenting to become skilled and efficient at it. With its user-friendly interface, it will take a few hours to understand the basics (i.e. axis, building blocks, pushing & pulling faces) & it will take a few days to become skilled.
3-Find the building you intend to model on Google Earth, and open in the same time Google Sketchup, then press the "Get Current View" button to make your model geo-referenced and to have an aerial plan or reference to your model.
4-Find photos of all sides of the building, it is preferable to use photos of the building that are mid-resolution to not increase the file size of your model, and please try as much as you could not to use photos of the building taken form a distance. (You can use a photo for all sides if the building has identical sides)
5- Photo-texture the building where you paste the photo on the face of your model by alligning the axis. For more info on how to do that visit http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/41443/photoshop_tutorial_how_to_apply_textures.html
6- After you are done, upload it to the 3d-warehouse, be sure to check the "Google Earth Ready" checkbox so that it would be considered for Google Earth. Before you upload be sure to disable the edges and enable shadows to have an appealing thumbnail image.
7- Once in the 3d-warehouse - It will take sometimes a few days or weeks to get the review for your model, be sure to check back to see your model's reviews submitted by Google Employees. The reviews wil let you know if it is accepted, if it is, they will put a blue ribon simbolizing its presence in Google Earth. If it is not, they will tell you why was it not accepted, you can have the choice to appeal the review, or you can simply edit the model and re-upload for review.
Finally, once you have uploaded and gotten accepted at least 12 models to GE, you can be eligible for an honour that only a few modelers have. Which is being a "Featured Google Earth Modeler". I now have 44 models out of 50 models accepted, the others are awaiting review :D
_________________________________________________________________
Note: To increase your model's chances of being accepted, please use photo-textures, you can use materials in sketchup that will maybe give the "incomplete texturing" review by Google. & that would make it like the model of the Beirut International Airport or the Marine Fort in Sidon; unrealistic - cartoonish - low quality.
My point is that if you are planning to do this, try to do it correctly. We eventually dont want low quality models to represent Lebanon on Google Earth.
_________________________________________________________________
IF you have any more questions please do inqiure more, my goal is to "recruit" as many people as possible to do this.
So far it has been just Abdallah & I modeling buildings for GE in Lebanon, we would love to have some good quality help !
melkart February 17th, 2010, 04:48 PM Thanks for the info that was helpful.
P.S: I am already a sketchup expert and already have a model to post.
Young-Modeler2.0 February 17th, 2010, 05:46 PM Ohh ,well in that case you just import the current view from Google Earth to Sketchup, position the model over the terrain and upload using Gmail Account. When you upload please give me a link to your model - I would love to see it !
melkart February 17th, 2010, 08:39 PM Ohh ,well in that case you just import the current view from Google Earth to Sketchup, position the model over the terrain and upload using Gmail Account. When you upload please give me a link to your model - I would love to see it !
I sure will. It still needs a little tweeking. I modeled Le Gray incase you are wondering. :)
Young-Modeler2.0 February 17th, 2010, 10:08 PM Please tell me that you used photo-textures ^^ :D - Very iconic structure though good work !
melkart February 17th, 2010, 10:18 PM That's what I need to tweek, The dome is already done with lots of details. but for the facades i need to get a good quality image in oreder to finish the model.
Abdallah K. February 17th, 2010, 10:44 PM ^^ can you take a screen shot of your work? I would love to see it
Young-Modeler2.0 February 17th, 2010, 11:30 PM ^^ Indeed post a photo show us your work !
I think you can find photos of it in the Moh'd El Amin Mosque thread as it is in close proximity with the mosque itself ! Hope it helps !
Young-Modeler2.0 February 17th, 2010, 11:32 PM ^^ @melkart:Remember not to include too many detail, you dont want your model to be too complex and fail proccesing for review in Google Earth. Just keep the face count below 1000 as much as you could.
melkart February 18th, 2010, 02:23 AM I guess I better keep this thing simple. This took me about 3 hours last night!

because the edges are showing that wont give you good ratings :D
Young-Modeler2.0 February 18th, 2010, 11:11 AM And try to get a close up on the model before uploading because I just saw it, and as much as the model is genious, the thumbnail image is not and no-one can see the detail you put into it. Also try to explain further in the description.
Here's a pruposed closeup that I suggest:

Especailly can you tell me where could I find photos of the tennis court there ?? (Just north to the stadium) I looked in the thread about about the universities in Lebanon and found nothing

Again, excellent work on all your models! The Ministry of Tourism should become aware of your work in promoting Lebanon!
Young-Modeler2.0 February 18th, 2010, 10:54 PM ^^ I cant tell you how much I really appreciate your efforts to help me and help Lebanon !
You have been immesnly helpful !
But remember it not only me, Abdallah K has pitched in a lot, he has 10 models and haas helped me do a lot of mine. There is also Melkart who has made a genious model of Le Gray hotel.
And about the ministry of Tourism, I really think they should invest in such an app because Google says that it has 75 million users worldwide. But I dont think that it is that much of a big deal, I mean anyone could do it ! Thanks a lot though ;)

Thankyou
Lebanese Cedar February 19th, 2010, 12:11 AM ^^Aviation is an interest of mine, and being interested in Lebanese issues and topics, it means I am VERY interested in Lebanese aviation. :)
Rabih February 19th, 2010, 12:53 AM ^^ yes he is :D
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 01:14 AM Well aviation is really cool, I just love architecture, including the strcuture of BIA , I think it one of the best airports in the Middle-East. Another thing Im really intrested in is sports stadiums and their design. I think that our national stadium has a very elegant design and impressive - It is by far my favorite structure in Lebanon!
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 01:40 AM Hey Melkart, Abdallah K. made a very important observation about your model - Look at the photo he gave me:
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs294.ash1/22134_310653786703_635741703_3548852_1673732_n.jpg
You have the "Z-Fighting" issue, which is one of the two faces are almost co-planer, this will kill your chances of getting it accepted to google earth. Please fix it by deleting one of the flashing faces and re-upload. Thankyou !
melkart February 19th, 2010, 02:06 AM Ughh. When I get a chance LOL
Lebanese Cedar February 19th, 2010, 02:13 AM That's a great looking model melkart!
Young-Modeler,
I agree, our airport is very nice and so is the Sport City stadium.
melkart February 19th, 2010, 05:27 AM Thank you LC!
YM I fixed the "Z-Fighting" issue, however I noticed that when I Placed my model in Google Earth, it hovered over the site by about 100 feet. So to compensate I lowered my building in sketchup by 100 feet below the site. I this a common issue?
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 10:56 AM Ill tell you what you did, when you imported the Google Earth view into sketchup you didn't have terrain turned on in Google Earth. This will result in what you described. However, it cannot be fixed by sinking the model, this will get it rejected in the review by Google employees for "Model Sunken" issue.
In this particular case, open you model, copy it (only the structure), open a new sketchup file, get the view from Google Earth with "terrain" turned on in Google Earth. Then, insert the model in the new file, place it and re-upload. Remember to delete the other versions.:
-Select the model and "cut":
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_wKC3SG8UOXo/S35rtHRwqrI/AAAAAAAAAP0/lGOWkKxxgls/s800/1.jpg
-Go to Google Earth and import the snapshot to a new file with terrain turned on:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_wKC3SG8UOXo/S35sAJ-ifSI/AAAAAAAAAP4/vdGBu12VlLE/s640/2.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_wKC3SG8UOXo/S35tQnnYDZI/AAAAAAAAAQc/nNPQYj5wh-o/s800/3.jpg
-Insert the model to your new file and place correctly:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_wKC3SG8UOXo/S35sG2YA7jI/AAAAAAAAAP8/AvMBTP5UuCQ/s800/4.jpg
-Export model to Google Earth:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_wKC3SG8UOXo/S35sVeFr-pI/AAAAAAAAAQY/HAvV8D7KkIk/5.jpg
& there you have it ! Upload & u're done !
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 11:01 AM I have noticed that you posted 2 replicate models of the same buildings in the 3d warehouse. I realize that one has been fixed from z-fighting but it is preferable that you delete the other to avoid any confusion by the Google employees because they might not notice the difference and reject them both. So please delete one of the models from the 3d warehouse.
Also when you upload the new model I just told you how to fix, delete the others also.
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 12:06 PM You should try to model AUB and IC :)
I uploaded a a version of 1 building of the Hostler center in AUB:

its still under review :)
melkart February 19th, 2010, 02:33 PM Thanks I think I finally got the hang of this now!
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 02:59 PM ^^ Anytime ;)
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 03:35 PM Hi agian, anyone know the name and any info on this building ??

lebnani February 19th, 2010, 03:50 PM I love this building, my grandparents have a picture infront of it in the late 50's. If they ever demolish this building I'll probably ugly cry!
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 05:36 PM Woah, is it really from the 50's ?! well it explains all the weird colors ?? Does anyone know if the back is Identical to the front ?? Thankyou ! :):)
Beiruti February 19th, 2010, 05:44 PM I love this building, my grandparents have a picture infront of it in the late 50's. If they ever demolish this building I'll probably ugly cry!
Come on, I understand its historical significance for Beirut, but it's hideous!
Beiruti February 19th, 2010, 05:44 PM Woah, is it really from the 50's ?! well it explains all the weird colors ?? Does anyone know if the back is Identical to the front ?? Thankyou ! :):)
I'm pretty certain the back is different, just regular balconies.
LeB.Fr February 19th, 2010, 06:30 PM Hideous? Not at all! I personally like it a lot. It's an icon of that area. And its height is perfect.
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 07:07 PM I'm pretty certain the back is different, just regular balconies.
Thanks man ! I just gotta ask! Any photos of the back ?! :)
And I agree, it is one of the most iconic structures in Beirut - I mean when I think about Beirut, this building just pops up in my head. However, it could be better without all the weird colors, but I think thats what makes it a trademark of Beirut ! Maybe a Unicolor like Beige or Marble will fix it. I want to model it for Google Earth you know :)
melkart February 19th, 2010, 07:35 PM Beiruti you are not an architect major are you? That building is unique, and what is considered to be an example of modern architectureof the 50's-60's era. Buildings like this and the carlton hotel should be preserved.
Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 07:40 PM ^^Well too bad the Carlton Hotel is long gone :( - Carlton Residences will replace :)
melkart February 19th, 2010, 08:59 PM yes I am aware :ohno:

Young-Modeler2.0 February 19th, 2010, 11:18 PM So we're getting off subject here I really need the name of the building were all talking about !!!
Young-Modeler2.0 February 20th, 2010, 01:35 AM Mais LOOOOL quoi!! Awesome! But I don't think they finished rebuilding the broken parts :P
LOL, I just cant put it all banged up on Google Earth, will really kill our reputaion !

Here is the thread:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=405125
Lebanese Cedar February 20th, 2010, 08:06 AM That's a great model of the Mdeirej bridge, but why is there an incline on each end? In real life, the bridge connects to each end of the valley without any incline whatsoever. It's an expressway at this point.
Young-Modeler2.0 February 20th, 2010, 01:18 PM ^^ I needed to maintain its trademark height of 75 meters, the only way to do this is using those inclinations, the terrain on Google Earth is just not high enough :)
Beiruti February 20th, 2010, 02:52 PM ^^ I'm surprised they approved it like that.
Young-Modeler2.0 February 20th, 2010, 07:10 PM ^^ Believe me it had its share of rejections. I cannot stress enough on its height, If I just make it shorter to intersect with the Google Earth terrain the difference would be somewhere to 20 meters. I have tried building up the Terrain of the two hills, but the model was rejected for "Terrain was too built up" review. So the only way around that to preserve the height ( which makes it the highest bridge in the ME) was to do those inclinations. However, the textures do not display correctly on the inclinations for some unknown reason, re-upload would fix it :S .
melkart February 20th, 2010, 07:28 PM Yeah I submitted My model for Le Gray again. It got rejected first round! I am currently working on my second model the AUB College Hall building. It's almost done!
Abdallah K. February 20th, 2010, 07:55 PM Ive never had any models rejected except for 1, and it wasnt even too good. I am %95 done with a Building on Nejmeh Square, and then I am going to do a model in Tripoli.
Does anyone know what the building is?
http://i50.************/2py4228.jpg
I know its some kind of Insurance Company I think but Im not sure of the name
LeB.Fr February 20th, 2010, 08:00 PM Isn't this the Italian Embassy or something?
Nadini February 20th, 2010, 08:51 PM ^^ no that's a popular italian insurance company called Assicurazioni Generali
melkart February 20th, 2010, 09:04 PM Not 100 percent sure but isn't this the former banca di roma. Building
Young-Modeler2.0 February 20th, 2010, 09:27 PM Yeah I submitted My model for Le Gray again. It got rejected first round! I am currently working on my second model the AUB College Hall building. It's almost done!
What was the reason of rejection ? Was it "incomplete texturing" because I noticed that you did not use photo-textures for the top - u need to use the GE snapshot (with colors) for the roof.
Also, I have noticed that it is smaller than the actual size of the building. It is significantly smaller (10 meters or so) than the Google Earth imagery of it.
Just ideas...
melkart February 20th, 2010, 11:37 PM You should work for google, cause that's the same reasons they gave
Young-Modeler2.0 February 21st, 2010, 12:35 AM LOL thanks I guess ! But thats experience you get after handling this stuff for a long time & on a large scale. Thanks ;) :D

Young-Modeler2.0 February 21st, 2010, 11:22 PM ^^ Awesome Modeling man, nice to have you on board ! Anything new regarding the Le Gray model ??
Young-Modeler2.0 February 21st, 2010, 11:28 PM ^^ Also, did you remember to use photo-textures for the roof ?
Young-Modeler2.0 February 21st, 2010, 11:30 PM I took it, I have around 5 photos of the port
Do any of them show the surrounding storage facilities ? if so, you should upload models of them as I did in the port of Beirut

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3821/rendercopy.jpg (http://img4.imageshack.us/i/rendercopy.jpg/)
Oh man ! I just downloaded the model, although it is great modeling - It is sunken around 20 meters below the terrain. Believe me, It will not get accepted this way. May look good on Google Earth , but the employee making the review will see that it is sunken too much. Did you remember to turn on terrain in GE before importing snapshot to Sketchup as I explained earlier ?
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_wKC3SG8UOXo/S4G1q3_rufI/AAAAAAAAATY/WTIkNvRYROw/add.jpg
melkart February 22nd, 2010, 12:50 AM I already fixed the sunken terrain issue, finally figured out how to do this properly. The one you are looking at is outdated. but I do have to re-upload this model.
melkart February 22nd, 2010, 12:51 AM ^^ You too doing these models , Melkart?
Yes you should join as well! :)
melkart February 22nd, 2010, 02:35 AM AUB - Main Gate

Young-Modeler2.0 February 22nd, 2010, 01:33 PM ^^ Very nice model - It's nice to have someone of your quality helping out ;). BTW, what is your goal model count ? Mine is 110 models by May 2010
melkart February 22nd, 2010, 02:55 PM LOL I am shocked that I have gone this far! Unfortunatly I don't have the kind of time in order to model these type of buildings. However it is a stress relieve for me, so I don't know how many more I will do. :)
but one thing for sure I like stately buildings, with lots of details!
Rabih February 22nd, 2010, 03:09 PM The AUB Main Gate model looks like a Medieval Fort Castle :sly:
Young-Modeler2.0 February 22nd, 2010, 05:11 PM it was built in the 1800's ^^
melkart February 22nd, 2010, 07:13 PM That's what it looks like in the real world lol!
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1185/926616422_f4ca275f5a.jpg
Young-Modeler2.0 February 22nd, 2010, 08:00 PM yup & that too ^^ LOL
Beiruti February 22nd, 2010, 08:06 PM Is it possible to make the trees 3D too? Would look a lot cooler and realistic...
Young-Modeler2.0 February 22nd, 2010, 09:07 PM ^^You could do the 3d trees with ease, but if you know the type of the tree you can download any knid of tree from the "3d warehouse" website that Google created to host millions of models, and use those trees in your model. But when modeling for Google Earth, you should always look out for the complexity of the model, since models that are too complex will not get accepted and fail proccesing. So, the most preferable trees to use are "2d trees" also in the 3d warehouse which are essentially cut out photos of trees that turn to face the camera as you rotate your view around the model.
I have actually used 3d trees in the Beirut Municipal Stadium model. They really weighed down the model and gave me a lot of hastle when uploading and during the review:
