It's a world class stadium, no doubt there, that would be a great stadium in Germany or France, I guess the issue is the infrastructure around it though, hence the talk that despite having this amazing stadium Donetsk might not end up being a host city. What's the deal, does Donetsk need a new airport or rail or road? There is so little updates from the Ukraine that it's really hard to tell what the situation is or if UEFA's concerns are being addressed.

It's interesting that it's a private stadium, are any of the Polish one's private or all govt owned? Hard to imagine a team like Gdansk needing Baltic Arena lol, they are very lucky chaps to get the stadium they are getting:P

Can't disagree with the fact that if there's no suitable and convenient infrastructure then having such gigantic and pretty stadium doesn't make any sense! No idea what are they thinking now in Ukraine! I believe for UA it's like now or never! If they won't begin some serious improvements in all fields all over the country in the nearest time (maybe there's a lot already going on there but we don't see this, guys, please, share the progress with us!) that would mean an epic fail in the eyes of whole Europe for this, truly to say, magnificent country! The only hope that could rest in the worst case is private investitions but unfortunately everyone knows the current situation as in the world as well as in Ukraine, so that's quite impossible because this just won't revise all country's state and I doubt UA economy will benefit from that! :ohno:

You are not wrong, it's now or never for the Ukraine and I wonder if they realise it? Doesn't seem like it.

The Shaktar Donetsk stadium is a private project for a private domestic team no? So it's really independent of Euro 2012, it's not built for the tournament and it would have been built anyway.

Certainly Shaktar just build their stadium, not the infrastructure around it and leading to it, that's not their responsibility nor should it. As the table below shows that Donetsk is still looking precarious.

So the real question is not what is going on with the stadium, because none are looking particularly risky, but are the other criteria being met? Roads, airports, hotels, public transport, that's the tricky stuff.

Platini gives his report in later September to EUFA, and we are in mid/late July, so that's August and then September, with a decision in November, it's not much time. Yushchenko called the Ukrainian preparation 'shoddy' the other day, and instead of being focused on 2012 the focus is on political infighting and corruption.

Anyway, you can see why Krakow feel hard done by, and why IMO Krakow and Chorzow will end up as host cities, It's going to be an interesting few months.

Actually, it's not that true as it looks on the table in both countries! In Poland and Ukraine situation is way better than it is shown here! But again we need some updates from UA to prove that things are moving there to the better side! Anyway, after seeing such fast progress being done on Warsaw stadium it's really hard to believe that the city has risk level 4 about stadium!

The planned one's in white are interesting, the one that dissects the top of the country deserves to be a freeway though. Still, it's shaping up as a pretty good road network. Keep it up guys! Great to watch!

You gotta give credit to Euro 2012, it was the impetus to finally get a lot of stuff done!

Polish regional railways finally managed to get through all the staff changes / politicall fuzz and plan to spend some 300m euro on new trains. Sounds fine, maybe the new PESA product? -

http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/4411/pesaelfpesa.jpg

Pre-agreement on the new trains for Przewozy Regionalne

Przewozy Regionalne (PR), Poland's national regional rail services operator, signed a pre-agreement on the purchase of passenger rolling stock for inter-regional services.

The tender for the fast inter-regional trains will be opened soon.

The pre-agreement was signed by PR with the Centre for EU Transport Projects (CEUTP).

Pararelly the tender for a feasibility study for the project was won by a Polish-Spanish consortium, with TOR Transport Consultants a leading member.

PR is going to buy approx. 70 four- or five-sectioned EMUs for up to
160 km/h, capable of carrying up to 200 passengers.

The deliveries are to end in 2014.

PR is willing to spend 1.321 billion PLN (EUR 311m), half of which is to be provided by the EU.

The purchase is supported by JASPERS initiative.

Luhankteplovoz against Ukrzaliznytsia's plans to buy trains from Hyundai

Luhanskteplovoz, a Ukrainian monopolist in the production of cargo diesel locomotives, do not like the idea of Ukrzaliznytsia of buying 10 interregional electric and 4 diesel trains from Korean Hyundai.

- This intention triggers nothing but bewilderment, as Luhanskteplovoz has recently put forth a proposal concerning the creation of new models of interregional diesel and electric trains with prospects for their launch before the [Euro 2012] European Football Championship, and we will in every way prove our advantages - the company's press service said cited by Kyiv Post.

According to Luhanskteplovoz's statement, the company is able to manufacture such trains in keeping with the technical requirements of Ukrzaliznytsia. This concerns high-speed trains capable of speeds of 200 km per hour and higher.

- Why not place the order in Ukraine and thus involve about 100 companies engaged in the manufacture of electric trains? As Ukraine has its own [locomotive] industry, buying products from outside shows a lack pf foresight and is not economically justified - the company's press service said.

I think if the idea of "Luhanskteplovoz" will not be approved by the government of Ukraine, than it will show how indeed stupid they are!! How can they make an order to expensive Korean company if they have their own, national manufacturer that can produce, as it was mentioned, similar trains?! They just all went nuts it seems, just want to plunder as much as it's possible! :ohno:

NO

Why no? The possibility is very high. Let's suggest that in december UEFA will declare that only Kiev is ready in Ukraine (and all is going for this decision). And then what??
4 cities in Poland + 1 in Ukraine - this will create many problems. We will have 5 stadiums insted of 8. Matches should be played more often, hotels and airoports will be full of fans, etc.
Such scenario will make UEFA to find hosts in Germany, because cities there are ready after WC 2006 and don't need big preparations in such little period.
This is objective reality.

Exactly!!! Even if Ukraine couldnt make it, there we still have Krakow and Chorzow - in 2012 they will be ready for sure! Because despite decission of UEFA that at this moment we're organising E2012 only in 4 cities, whole preparations in Krakow and Chorzow are completly still in move! They are reserve cities, so its normal that in case of Ukraine's troubles, Krakow and Chorzow are better solution than Euro with Germany <-- nobody in Poland will accept that, and i think our goverment knows about it. To sum up; if no Ukraine, whole Euro in PL.
But of course decissions are in Uefas hand. ;)

When asked yesterday in Poznan this is what he said

Discussion on this issue is still ongoing. You all know the situation and the problems of the Ukraine. At the beginning of the journey, both partners were in identical situations. However as a result of the recent economic crisis, the current situation is no longer so clear. Poland has made a big effort. Ukraine continues to make these efforts. You know very well, however, that the amount of financial resources at the disposal of the two countries are very different. In December, any further decisions will be made. All of our previous decisions you know very well.

Well if it's like 4 or 6 cities in Poland and 1 or 2 in Ukraine then it's a bit silly that the final would be in the Ukraine. Eufa have for a long while wanted 6 cities in Poland, but have held back from doing it to give Ukraine a chance to get up to speed, this 6 months extension was a last minute reprieve. Maybe Ukraine will manage it, maybe not, time will tell I guess.

UEFA delegation visits Polish host cities, stadiums
Monday 27 July 2009 EUFA.com

A delegation led by UEFA President Michel Platini visited the UEFA EURO 2012™ host cities and stadiums of Gdansk, Poznan and Wroclaw on 26/27 July and met with representatives of the Polish Football Association, government, cities and stadiums.

UEFA support
Michel Platini was satisfied with the current level of preparations in Poland and assured the Polish organisers that UEFA will continue to support them in the realisation of this major sporting project.

End of November
The UEFA President also took the opportunity at a press briefing to remind the media of the situation in Ukraine, with Kiev the only city currently in a position to host matches – not including the final – and that the other candidate cities have until the end of November to provide all the necessary guarantees concerning the development of the infrastructure needed to host matches at the tournament, as decided by the UEFA Executive Committee last May.

December decision
The UEFA Executive Committee will take a final decision on the host cities for the 2012 UEFA European Championship on the occasion of its 10/11 December meeting in Madeira, Portugal.

Uefa already said that so let's stop speculating, there is no possibility for Poland to have 6 cities hosting Euro 2012.

These are the scenarias(confirmed by Uefa in may) from best to worst:
A. 4 cities for each country
B. 4 for Poland and 3 for Ukraine
C. 4 for Poland and 2 for Ukraine(Kiev plus the best of the rest), only 1 quarterfinal for Ukraine.

So it's gonna be between 6 and 8 cities total, no less and no more than that.

The final for now is for Warsaw's, Kiev has 4 months to get it back, but for now it's behind Warsaw.

This is the REAL situation, all other speculations are pure utiopia.

Except Platini has said they will look at other cities if need be.

If Ukraine doesn't make it on time, or only Kiev makes it, then all bets are off and it's makes no sense to talk in absolutes.

Maybe they will make it and it will be 4-4, but if it's not then don't rule anything out, that's what I'm saying. No one expected a 6 month extension for Ukraine, so quite frankly no one can really say with certainty what will happen in the future. Good luck to them, but it all remains to be seen.

AFP article from today:

Ukraine running out of time to convince Euro doubters
Tue, Jul 28th - AFP

PARIS, July 28, 2009 (AFP) - Ukraine has just weeks to prove the country can fulfil the promises it made when it won the right jointly with Poland to host the Euro 2012 championships.

UEFA, concerned about delays in the preparations, has already scaled back the programme, dropping two cities, Dnipopetrovsk and Odessa, from the list of venues and casting doubt on Kiev as the scene for the final.

Joint hosts Poland, however, has received a clean bill of health from UEFA for its share of the 2012 arrangements which include venues at Warsaw, Wroclaw, Poznan and Gdansk.

UEFA president Michel Platini, visiting the Ukrainian capital last month, set a deadline of November 30 for the Ukrainians to make good their promises but the decisions that count will be made in the next few weeks.

Last week, a delegation of UEFA technical experts visited each of the four remaining Ukrainian sites - in Kiev, in Donetsk, Lviv and Kharkov - to judge whether stadium building as well as investments in airports, roads and hotels could meet the deadline.

Their conclusions will be presented to Platini at a meeting scheduled for September 25 in Bordeaux, France.

Things are not looking good for the Ukrainians, who have suffered extremely badly in this year's financial crash.

According to Kiev's 'Korrespondent' magazine, the 50 super-rich families comprising Ukraine's elite saw their fortunes drop by 75 percent and private sector capital for investment in the tournament is just not there.

Until Platini's visit in June, construction of the Olympic Stadium in Kiev had been stalled for more than a year due to a legal battle involving rival landowners.

Last week, lawmaker Rawil Safiullin, who heads a parliamentary committee overseeing the works, said a large part of the 16 million dollars allocated to the stadium project had disappeared.

"It spread somewhere on its way," he told Ukrainian newspaper Today.

At soccer-crazy Donetsk, whose local team Shakhtar won the UEFA Cup last season, a magnificent new 50,000-seater stadium is scheduled to open next month.

But it may never be used for the Euro tournament because adequate airports, hotels and highways are lacking.

The existing airport, modernized in the 1970s on the site of a former Soviet airforce training field, is too small to cope with the flow of fans and the road into town is regularly clogged with commuter traffic.

A planned five-star hotel in the city close to the Russian border is just a drawing board concept, due to the lack of private sector capital needed to trigger investment from European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The transport issue is a serious headache for UEFA planners in Poland and Ukraine - two vast countries with decrepit and slow trains, few motorways, and with burgeoning moneyed classes who go everywhere by car.

The feuding between Ukraine's political leaders is the unhelpful background to this story of delays and inadequate planning, and seems set to get even more vicious in the months up to presidential elections, expected in January next year.

The transport minister Yosip Vinsky resigned last month, warning the disagreements could prove fatal for the tournament.

"The prime minister (Yulia Tymoshenko) is blocking the deployment of sufficient resources for the construction of infrastructure for Euro 2012," he complained.

Sports minister Yury Pavlenko remains confident although conceding much remains to be done: "We are placing the accent on those areas which according to UEFA have a high level of risk," he said.

The worst case secenario could be for only Kiev to win UEFA's approval among the Ukrainian venues, leaving the matches scheduled for the three other sites to go elsewhere.

Asked by French sports daily L'Equipe if Berlin and Leipzig, in nearby Germany, could be considered, Platini admitted this was indeed an option.

Leaders of Kyiv, Donetsk, Lviv, Kharkiv still sweating Euro 2012 deadline

24 July, 20:53 | Interfax-Ukraine

Heads of the local government agencies in the four Ukrainian cities that seek to host the Euro 2012 European Football Championship finals have announced a joint statement and urged all the political forces "to declare a taboo any unconsidered statements on hosting the Euro 2012 in Ukraine."

"We call on all political forces and movements, public organizations and their leaders to declare a taboo any unconsidered statements on holding the Euro 2012 matches in Ukraine and hope for discreet behavior and objective comments only," reads the statement signed by the mayors of Donetsk, Lviv, Kharkiv and the first vice mayor of Kyiv in Kharkiv on Friday.

According to the statement, "the guarantees provided to UEFA as for the development of sports and social infrastructure in the hosing cities in the context of the terms and requirements set by UEFA, as well as for the comfort and security of all the participants and visitors during the event have been fully confirmed today by practical action - the construction of stadiums, airports, runways, hotels, highways in the cities and intercity railways, the arrangement of medical servicing and cultural activities."

The authors of the statement claim that the government's concrete action and "their determination" will make it possible to realize all the undertaken commitments in 2010 and 2012 and finalize the preparation of the hosting cities for the Euro 2012.

They also point out that the recent decisions taken in parliament enable the government to start more active financing of the Euro 2012 preparations.

The statement was passed at the first regional working meeting on preparing and holding the Euro 2012 in Kharkiv on July 24. The meeting was chaired by Vice Premier Ivan Vasiunyk and attended by Football Federation of Ukraine head Hryhoriy Surkis.

As was reported earlier, the UEFA Executive Committee at a meeting in Bucharest on May 13, 2009, confirmed Kyiv and four cities in Poland - Warsaw, Wroclaw, Poznan and Gdansk - as host cities for Euro 2012 events.

Kyiv was confirmed as a host city for group matches, quarterfinals and a semifinal. At the same time, the final match of Euro 2012 will be held in Kyiv only if specific conditions with regard to the stadium, airport infrastructure, regional transport and accommodation are met by November 30, 2009.

Three other venues in Ukraine - Donetsk, Lviv and Kharkiv - will host group matches if they meet the same conditions by this deadline.

The UEFA Executive Committee decided not to host Euro 2012 matches in Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa.

A final decision with regard to the Ukrainian cities will be taken by November 30, 2009.

Since 1995 KYIV is the English name suggested by Ukrainian authorities and used by them in all official English documents. There is no traditional English name for the city (like Warsaw for Warszawa for example), so English speaking nations used Russian name as for a city in USSR.
However, many names have been changed in last 20 years, like - there is no Kishinev in English anymore, but Chisinau, and no Belorussia, but Belarus.

Same, Kyiv instead of Kiev.

You can see an example in the post above.

Ukraine's Euro 2012 organisation in doubt

Published: Thursday 30 July 2009

Due to the ongoing economic crisis, Ukraine is having difficulty financing the infrastructure needed to co-host Euro 2012 with Poland. According to UEFA's alternative plan, some matches may take place in the German cities of Berlin and Leipzig instead.

Only Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, might maintain the right to host Euro 2012 matches, with approval for three other Ukrainian cities - Donetsk, Lviv and Kharkiv - dependent on the progress they make over the next four months.

UEFA's executive committee will take the final decision regarding host cities in December and expects Ukraine to offer concrete guarantees that the country will be able to fulfil its promises by then.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko accused the government of breaking promises made regarding financing the tournament. Just days before, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko had said preparations to co-host the event with Poland were proceeding normally despite the effects of the global financial crisis.

According to UEFA, Kiev could host some matches but not even the capital is in a position to host the final. Serious infrastructure problems must still be resolved regarding airport infrastructure, transport networks and accommodation if the country is to be able to welcome a huge influx of football fans and ensure the smooth running of the championships.

Ukraine and Poland were chosen as co-hosts of the event in 2007.

On an inspection visit in Poland earlier this week, UEFA President Michel Platini said he was satisfied with the "current level of preparations" in the country. All four of the country's Euro 2012 host cities - Gdańsk, Wrocław, Poznań and Warsaw - have already received initial approval to stage matches.

While officials insist that the right to host the tournament will not be withdrawn from Ukraine or Poland, UEFA is anxious about delays in preparing for the competition. The body has put together a reserve plan, according to which the distribution of cities hosting matches could be altered and some of the matches might take place in the German cities of Berlin and Leipzig.

About 10-12 mln people.
Terminals are made for 20 million pax. Inappropriate runaway and ban for night flights makes airport capable of serving only 12 million... Further development of the airport isn't probable due to the protest of the inhabitants of the neighboring districts. For about 5 years there are plans for a new hub, only plans so far...

I think they just need to build a big ass airport somewhere, like a major major one, Spanish, German, Dutch cities etc, they all have one, and as they say with demand, build it and they will come.

But for now F. Chopin is very nice as a medium size airport.

2012ua.net is non-official web-site. There is no official promo site about preparations in Ukraine. If you want to read news in English check Ukraine 2012 Guide (http://ukraine2012guide.com). It is updated every day.

As for me, don't pay attention to those "German" variants. Anyway Ukraine already has 1 city (Kyiv) approved, though without final game, but still...
The problem is that Europeans mostly receive info from non-Ukrainian medias, which usually don't cover all aspects and provide mostly negative info, because people will read such news more. Also, they are not here and they don't see real changes.

Yes, but how many of us is on this forum, and how many Ukrainians who live in Ukraine (not in emigration).

Another issue is, that Poland is in best way to deal with the crisis (growth 1,9% year to year in 1Q - the best in Europe) and Ukraine is completely on another pole (-20%). I am not surprised that some things can not be done in this situation.

This is related to the recent decision regrading the International Broadcasting Center being located in Warsaw and not in Kiev, as originally speculated. According to Kommiersant-Ukraina, the IBC is always located where the final match will take place.

The disparaging Polish media and her faithful following have left Poland well alone and now need to direct their vehement toxicity towards a fresh wound. Do forgive their transgressions and please baptize us victimless souls of their sins. :hi:

Err, it's the German media (well obviously given Berlin/Liepzig possibility), and the French media who break these stories.

But you know, that's what media do, they look for stories and stories are generated by conflict and issues.

The thunder and deluge were initially cast upon us by the Polish media frantically informing us how and when we would fail to realize our aspirations and ambitions to host the tournament.

Has amnesia now overwhelmed the Polish psyche that those days of not so distant past are now concealed in a new predisposition of a once inferior complex now turned to pseudo-superiority?

Maybe I am blind to the truth, though I find it hard to let local media from Poland or Ukraine sway my mind when such cynicism is prevalent and the final verdict is built upon a foundation of journalistic pessimism.

Kiev has 3 ***** hotels 3 **** hotels 2 *** hotels

Warsaw has 7 ***** hotels 7 **** hotels 10 *** hotels

Berlin (last WC final) has 22 ***** hotels 89 **** hotels 93 *** hotels

Vienna (last EC final) has 15 ***** hotels 77 **** hotels 59 *** hotels

I know it's no longer a reserve venue but is the redev of Chorzow stadium still going ahead?

Btw, Bono and U2 has approved the Euro 2012 prep;) whilst at the Chorzow Stadium last week, direct quote after playing 'New Years Days' (which is about Poland):

'Something going on here. There's something going on in this country. You can feel it the last time we were here now it's here even stronger, this country is going somewhere very special, a special spirit. What is it? Is the Irish-Polish connection? is it stubborness? is it faith? Faith in the future, that the future can be better than the past and for many, not for the few. Europe needs more countries like Poland.'

;) Okay maybe he wasn't talking about Euro 2012, but it's still a nice quote!:)

but the road (car accident) situation in Poland is a joke and deserves criticizm. In Croatia there was a war 10yrs ago and they managed to build about 1500km motorways..... Poland is a flat country without dense population in the countryside and it should be really no problem to build 1000-2000km motorways in (the last) 20yrs.

You know, if something similar as on the map shown by markus1234 would someday be realized, then Poland will become a high-class European motorway country and since then won't be counted as an Eastern European (in sense of development) country!! That Poland will have a status of a progressive and perspective European republic!

Situation in other european countries was similar some years ago (kills per capita) Dont compare big country to small one (in european terms) it is way easier to manage small country than big one. Best to compare PL with Spain I guess.

I had such impression also cos it looks as if it will be located somewhere at the outskirts of city but it appears to be not that far from the city centre and is still in city's borders. Truly to say, I believe after the construction will be done, that area will become one of the most recognizable places in Wroclaw and probably a really perspective as well!

August 17th, 2009, 02:54 PM
These really are outskirts of the city, the quite large area on the left is a small town (Leśnica, annexed in 1928) and mainly woodland/fields. The city itself ends more or less where the stadium is getting build.

To my mind Donetsk`s stadium`s in outside is like glassy glow-worm, I don`t see there something special, many stadiums in Europe have more attractive facade, but of course due to own magnitude it makes really good impression and now it`s the best stadium in Eastern Europe. Also interior is for me totally unusual, in this respect one of the best in world.

Donetsk is a fantastic stadium, brand new and a lot of money has gone into it, they don't make em that good in France or Germany, very nice surrounds as well. I guess the problem for Donetsk is going to be the surrounding infrastructure, the hotel situation is apparently catastrophic according to Ukrainian news, only 10% are up to grade, so it's a bizarre imbalance, fantastic stadium without the great infrastructure, guess we'll see what happens.

Night lighting looks great btw.

Donetsk city Mayor recently said such:

...We have offered a project of placement, in which five-star hotels have deficit of 578 rooms, but it will be overlapped with the hotels of lower level (4 and 3 stars). Such proposals were prepared, and today will be discussed with the Director-General Euro-2012 Martin Kallen"- said the mayor.

"Previously, I met him in late May and asked for lower hotel requirements for Donetsk as it is the industrial center, not a tourist center. So that after Euro-2012 it would be possible to operate hotels and to use them for business",- added O. Lukyanchenko.

@ Singidunum: I hope they will take out the grass pitch for today's opening. Otherwise it will get ruined!

Plus one more stadium ready in Ukraine since today! Just two more left! Pity that the problem with all other infrastructure is not yet resolved, especially in the same Donetsk..! But let's hope that today's opening will be a big punch forwards for UA government to start total investitions in country's preparation works!

Anyway, as it was told before, currently Donetsk is the best stadium (in terms of appearance and innovations used) not only in Eastern, but also in Central Europe!!

lukaszek89

also the best of eastern, central, south , north europe in it's class. Donieck stadium is indeed beautifull and impressing but dude, we should change our own record:)

Congratulations, great stadium and I wish all the best for Donetsk and other Ukraininan cities. A city that is capable of building something like this is DEFINITELY capable of making everything else work!:)

By the way, I heard that Ukraine has some really nice train stations that look like museums. Is that true, how is Ukrainian train travel? I believe that Ukraine should look into the mode of transportation that it has best and focus all the improvement on that and then advertise to the fans about using gthis-safe mode of transportation.

As for which stadium will be the best, well Donetsk will definitely be the best Euro2012 stadium for at least another 1.5 years. After that we will see the result and judge. However, judgement is relative according to every individual's taste. Personally from visualisations to me the Baltic Arena looks best, but all the Euro 2012 stadiums look incredible!:)

Ismat Chan, you are just so right! I do agree with you! :D
But anyway in 2012 or even earlier when we'll see all the stadiums built, only then we might judge them, but not before because it's not the same in reality as it looks in some visualizations!
