Actually, as long as those roads on the maps are concerned - you can't say this. Most of them are either finished or will be ready next year. Unfortunately, neither of them is a real new construction, and only a small fraction are true motorways.
What is the funniest (saddest?) part of this picture- are the price tags for the stadiums. The actual numbers are by factor of 5 grater.
J@nek April 25th, 2011, 09:25 AM Ukraine is not going to look good in the eyes of those who choose to travel by car. Fortunately, the airports will be ok.

lpftv April 26th, 2011, 12:03 PM Тернопіль продовжує європідготовку (Ternopil)

Ulyssis April 26th, 2011, 07:31 PM Now, it's becoming interesting.
I've posted some info about rail link to Boryspil Airport in Kyiv. For some time, it looked like the project has been postponed till after 2012. At least ,the "Euro2012-Tzar" Mr. Kolesnikov said so. However with Ukraine beeing Ukraine, we should not be surprized that there are two (or more) Hetmans in one government. Prime Minister (Azarov) was pushing for this prohect for a while. He secured funding from China (naturally, the contract will be awarded to Chinese), and according to the latest reports, they are planing to build the rail link in 14 month- just by the time of Euro.
By the way, the project is outrangeusly expensive - almost 400 mln $ - comparable to another stadium, or a big airport terminal.

The problem is the plans were going much further than this. Especially Ukraine will really mess up with roads. I can't imagine the shock the western visitors will have when they will cross the border with Ukraine by car, especially coming from Poland. I really hope they will try to recover in good shape at least these main roads, cause it's difficult to trust the ukrainian government after they promised new tracks for EURO 2012.
Poland will also have trouble. Not all motorway stretches will be ready for the tournament and our national railway company PKP is nowhere close to realize any of their plans and that makes me sad.

Actually, I'd rather say that the way things shape up considerebly exceed my own expectations. The original plans were extremely naive.
I would nort even worry about ukrainian roads. Yes, it's pitty that Krakowets-Lviv motorway has been posponed, but the at least existing roads will be in much better shape.
I'am very glad that Poland managed to byild a substantial fraction of motorway network. In the case of Ukraine, resourses were allocated to boost
components that were most vital for the Euro ( stadium, airports, railways, city infrastructure/transport + hotels).
As to motorways, afler the current road reconstructions, getting to Lviv or to Kyiv by car will not be problematic. Going by car to Donetsk or Kharkiv would not be an attractive option, even if there were excellent motorways all the way. The distance from Polish/Ukrainian border to Donetsk is is the same as to Cologne.
There is a considerable momentum now for infrustructure development in Ukraine, and with airport/railway significantly improved by 2012, there is a good chance that motorways will become the prime focus after that.

Yes, rail is the best option by far. At peresent, express trains from Kyiv to Kharkiv and Lviv take about 6 hours, from Kyiv to Donetsk you have to travel by night train ( about 11 hours). Currently, there is a massive rail upgrade going on. The times from Kyiv to these 3 cities will be between 4 and 6 hours in 2012.
As to the roads, the pictures ^^ are not entirely representative. If you have to travel betwenen these 4 cities, 2/3 of the roads are 2x2 expressways (not real motorways, they have U-turns), and they are currently being upgraded. Outside the main roads- the situation is far worth.
What almost everyone here refers to are 3 roads that connect Lviv to Polish border, which are in really bad shape. They are being reconstructed.

I'm imagining KSW holding a event there.
m-m May 2nd, 2011, 01:23 AM I don't like stadium in Gdańsk. Ok, outside it looks quite interesting but inside it looks horrible. These yellow plastic with metal pipes remindes me roofs of vegetables' market halls or some bus stops built in "socialism era" (before 1989) in Poland. Looks so cheap. But it's only my private opinion :)
mr.cool May 2nd, 2011, 11:56 AM Will there be tv screens installed in Wroclaw and Gdansk stadiums? Very hard to tell atm as they're all not finished but Warsaw is looking the best followed by Wroclaw and Gdansk.

Manier666 May 23rd, 2011, 05:27 PM Hi guys!
I'm a student of University of Warsaw and I'm writing an essay about preparations to Euro2012.
I live in Poland, so I have enough sources to write about Polish part of preparations.
But unfortunately I have almost nothing about the Ukrainian part.. I read some pages in this thread, but found almost only stadiums' photos etc.
Almost nothing about infrastructure, hotels, airports, railway stations - and these are things that are very important for me.
So guys, can you help me and maybe share some links, or even write something about anything connected with Euro except stadiums?
For example, how are infrastructure preparations in Ukraine going, compared to Poland? And so on...
Thank you guys, i hope you'll help me
regards!

Best source in English is the official euro2012 website (there is Polish, too).
http://ukraine2012.gov.ua/en/
You can get overview of airports /stadia there. Most news are fresh, but the content regarding airports/infrastructure may be outdated.
The best overview of airport projects (outside SSC theads) is here (it's in russian, use google translator): http://www.avianews.com/airlines/airport/euro2012_donetsk.htm
As to railways, you'll have to dig up news. In a nutshell, tracks L'viv->Kyiv->Poltava->Donetsk and Poltava-Kharkiv are beeing upgraded to 160, and new trainsets are ordered from Hyundai/Rotem. A new railways station is being constructed in Donetsk (you can follow the story at SSC )
Hotels/urban transport/roads - again- just post your question at the corresponding section of SSC in English.

salto_angel May 25th, 2011, 08:28 PM ^^ some problems with the cascade-stairs. The delay may (but this is NOT confirmed) be up to several months due to the need to rebuild the stairs. Anyway, no danger for the Euro games :)
Ulyssis May 26th, 2011, 02:07 AM Thank's clear. Let's hope, the game with Germany won't be moved. It's important to test the pitch on each stadium this year.

salto_angel May 29th, 2011, 01:50 PM ^^ Nope. Some problems with the groundwater under the terminal building. There's going to be some delay (2-3months), but no danger for the Euro games. It was supposed to be opened in September, now, possibly in November.

J@nek June 6th, 2011, 11:26 AM I understand that the Pendolinos will be delivered after the soccer championships, however I still believe that this is a significant railway infrastructure investment for Poland; one that will revolutionize railway in Poland. Therefore, I decided to post the following article, hope you guys don't mind ;-)
PKP Intercity signs Pendolino contract
31 May 2011
Impression of Alstom New Pendolino train for PKP Intercity.
POLAND: PKP Intercity and Alstom Transport signed a €665m contract on May 30 for the supply and maintenance of 20 New Pendolino trainsets.
They are to be delivered from Alstom's Savigliano plant in Italy from 2014, and along with ongoing infrastructure upgrades will cut the fastest Warszawa - Gdansk journeys to 2½ h from more than 4 h. Warszawa to Krakow and Katowice will be reduced from around 2¾ h to 'slightly more than 2 h'.
Part of Alstom's 'service proven' Pendolino family, of which more than 400 trainsets have been sold since the 1970s, the seven-car trains for PKP Intercity will be designed for a maximum speed of 250 km/h, but will not be equipped to tilt. Each train will be able to carry 402 passengers.
They will be fitted with ERTMS as well as Polish, Austrian, Czech and German signalling systems, and will be able to run under 3 kV DC, 15 kV 16·7 Hz and 25 kV 50 Hz electrification. They will be equipped for regenerative braking, and will meet the latest European standards for noise emissions.
Alstom will maintain the trains for 17 years at a 12 000 m2 depot to be built in Warszawa, which will have around 100 staff.
Half of the cost of the contract is being met from the EU's Operational Programme Infrastructure & Environment. The rest is to be covered by a government-guaranteed EIB loan. This is subject to European Commission approval of the 15-year monopoly operating contract signed by the government and PKP Intercity on February 25.

Sad news is about Warszawa stadium. Our stadium every day grows up... and there's still time... result will see in October.
I think that its just jealousy of polish journalist. Everywhere there are bad people. And realy I dont want to chat here about national neighbour-relations of 2 host countries. We must be friends and help eachother.
And what about Donbass Arena and Baltic Arena ... hmm... In Gdansk you may see not only stadium like it is in Donetsk. Oh and Lenin monument ... 2 and the only "sights/attractions" of Donetsk.
And in yesterdays match Ukraine - France Donetsk proved his nationality city status.
There were "amazing" support of Ukrainian national team, like nowhere else. Besides UA national team never won in Danetsk.
Ulv June 7th, 2011, 01:10 PM I think that its just jealousy of polish journalist.
But i wonder... why polish journalist should be jealous? Well, no one wish bad things for Lviv and Donetsk. It's just about progress.
Sad news is about Warszawa stadium.
Yes it is true, Warsaw has some problems with stairs, but nobody says that's because of "jealous ukrainian journalists" Just don't be so touchy.

We must be friends and help eachother.
Of course we must.

bla-bla-bla-bla
dp_feeZf@ker June 7th, 2011, 04:46 PM To my mind all the stadiums both in Ukraine and Poland are very modern, impressive with uniqe architekture and nice design. Baltic Arena is amazing, recently had chance to see it and I was really impressed!

Why are you talking about UA supporters or city attractions/sights? We talk about stadiums! And both of DA and BA are great!!! By the way, Gdansk' attractions is the only one (but beautiful) street and market place. And that's all! The rest of ancient city looks like ruins! So what are you proud of???

Well, i invite you to Gdańsk, because this is totally untruth ;-) Anyway, Gdańsk is one of the most important harbor in Europe, not a ruins.

Welcome to Gdańsk! :)
V_etas June 7th, 2011, 06:06 PM Gdańsk:okay:
and Donetsk is not only Donbass Arena and Lenin's monumet.
jumping_jack June 7th, 2011, 06:25 PM well.. i visited gdansk and it was really stunning and clean but it's also true that for a city with 450K inhabitants (1M in the metro area) there's not much to see apart the long road and long market... i would say that the old town of gdansk can be compared to a 50-100k inhabitants touristic city, there is much talk of the destruction of warsaw, but ww2 has left its mark in gdansk too
Ulv June 7th, 2011, 06:36 PM there is much talk of the destruction of warsaw, but ww2 has left its mark in gdansk too
Yes i agree, but currently Gdańsk has a really huge development (if we compare to last 50 years) The city changes every year, and it's going to be a very beautiful place to life.
dp_feeZf@ker June 7th, 2011, 06:38 PM I've been to Gdans'k less then a year ago. And I was really surprised about small historical center and its ugly, partially destroyed environment. I have foto-prove!!!
jumping_jack June 7th, 2011, 06:38 PM it's going to be a very beautiful city
i'm sure it is :okay:
Ulyssis June 7th, 2011, 06:41 PM In my heart it will be always the Baltic Arena ^^
And sad news about progress in Lviv:

I frankly don't see what this dude's problem is. 5 months is definitely more than enough to finish the interior & facade work on Lviv Arena. Pitch preparation and chairs are matter of one month. No one really said that the area around stadium will be all ready by October/November.

Well, if you were there only to find a bad things, i'm sure you've found. But also you can go to Florence, and see some ugly houses with mushrooms on the walls. So will it be the only thing in this city to watch? Don't be a moron, because i'm sure in your locality we could find much more ugly places than in Gdańsk.
jumping_jack June 7th, 2011, 06:52 PM :nono: beware he haz a foto-prove!!!

He did npt mean to offend you. It's just about the dissonance between expectation and reality. And yes, out of all places Italy os a classic example of that. Many people got shocked seeing real Florence or Rome after glossy postcards. But it's also easy to love each of those places the way they are.
Indyk June 7th, 2011, 07:39 PM well.. i visited gdansk and it was really stunning and clean but it's also true that for a city with 450K inhabitants (1M in the metro area) there's not much to see apart the long road and long market... i would say that the old town of gdansk can be compared to a 50-100k inhabitants touristic city, there is much talk of the destruction of warsaw, but ww2 has left its mark in gdansk too
The city was heavily damaged in WW2 but honestly it's very impressive. If I was to compare, it's not less impressive than for example Antwerp which is similar sized harbour touristic city. There are of course huge holes to fill with buildings and some not very nice modern buildings close to the train station.
P.S. I aslo like their arena more than the Donbas one. It looks more modern and interesting.
uunxx June 7th, 2011, 07:53 PM He did npt mean to offend you.
Well, he said "The rest of ancient city looks like ruins! So what are you proud of???", I find it quite offensive. While Gdańsk old city center isn't very big it's certainly of highest quality. Sure there are places waiting for redevelopment but the city was almost completely destroyed during war, yet great part has been rebuilt to it's previous glory. It was not always a case in many post-communistic countries (Kaliningrad/Konigsberg, Dresden was mostly pile of rocks until late 80's/90's, etc.), I think it's something to be proud of.
Skysteel June 7th, 2011, 08:04 PM guys, enough flame. All cities and stadiums are beautiful.

of course, i said it is a stunning place, no doubt about it, my post was only about the size that is a bit under the expectation in a city with similar population, thats all, once the granary island and the shipyard will be revitalized the things will change positively...
end OT or i will show dp_feeZf@ker playing with himself in the shower... i have foto-prove!!!1

I would agree Gdansk looks more stunning, but three conditions should apply:
-exterior view
-ground-level observation spot
-sunny weather.
In every other aspect Donbass Arena is better or on the same level of fascination

A little biased there. In my opinion, the only thing that Donbass Arena has over PGE Arena is the exterior lighting. Other than that PGE is nicer.
