View Full Version : EURO 2012: Poland and Ukraine Stadia and Infrastructure
Ulyssis June 8th, 2011, 06:06 AM A little biased there. In my opinion, the only thing that Donbass Arena has over PGE Arena is the exterior lighting. Other than that PGE is nicer.
Don't see much bias there. In fact, I don't understand why almost everyone seems to be saying that Gdansk is the best arena in Poland. I feel it's hard to beat Warsaw. To me, Baltic arena still has too much of a plastic feel. With enough sunshine, (and probably, right lighting in night), from large distance it looks absolutely stunnig. But only under those conditions.

maxarch June 8th, 2011, 09:09 AM well.. i visited gdansk and it was really stunning and clean but it's also true that for a city with 450K inhabitants (1M in the metro area) there's not much to see apart the long road and long market... i would say that the old town of gdansk can be compared to a 50-100k inhabitants touristic city, there is much talk of the destruction of warsaw, but ww2 has left its mark in gdansk tooit's hard to agree with you. if "the old town of gdansk can be compared to a 50-100k inhabitants touristic city" that means you've seen like 1/4 of the old town. ofc some areas 'behind the old town' doens't look too good, but it's just a matter of time when it will change (problems: polish law, heritage conservator), also it's just like 1% or even less of the whole city. have you seen historical wrzeszcz? you didn't. have you seen oliwa? you didn't...and so on.

That has actually been my feeling too... I was kind of surprised to see so many people so much in love with the stadium. The design is nice, and I think the interior has a very fresh feel (don't know how well this will hold up through time), but the exterior facade, imo, would have been much nicer if it were to have more of a glassy look to it.
It's a beautifully designed stadium to be sure, but for me, it just has too much of a plasticy feel to put it higher on my list. But I guess my preferred aesthetic runs more toward the metal and glass anyway.

Well, i have same feeling with Donbass stadium - it isn't look so perfect for me.. but it just depend of your preferences. In fact Donbass can be located everywhere, when Baltic Arena is designed just for Gdansk, i don't imagine it in any other place.

Ok, but you should know how much Gdańsk was damaged durign II World War! It's not fair to compare it. Learn some history first :)

Of course Gdansk is far from perfect, but the whole Tricity agglomeration is one of the nicest cities in our part of Europe :cheers:

Smoking is prohibited in restaurants etc. (it's approved only if seperated closed & ventilated room is designated), universities, hospitals, schools, bus stops, cinemas and some other public places.

So why everyone is drinking on the streets, parks and buses? And the police pays no attention to them? BTW, the same thing I observed in Moscow, but on smaller scale.

I don't that much like exterior lighting of Donbass Arena and I mean that blue color in particular:) The original turquoise would fit better. And if we talk about interior I will probably say something that one can consider sacrilegious, sorry for that, but I like Gdansk interior the least among all polish stadiums (except for Poznan when small stand is within eyeshot) And here are the reasons.
-I don't like that yellowish light being produced by the roof in Gdansk. Someone hit the bull's eye when said it produced light and feeling of materials which had been used to cover the old soviet bazaars. I have always felt annoyed by that kind of light.
-And the second disadvantage of interior view is that roof suppresses stands which aren't that large and well-shaped by themselves.
But the exterior view in sunny weather is absolutely gorgeous:okay:

@wrocmax, dokładnie to ołówkiem. Zakupiłem całą skrzynkę, pożyczyłem od Madziarów sprzęt alpinistyczny i tak sobie malowałem.
Ostatnio zdjęcia długo się ładują gdyż postawiłem na jakość :) i maja po ok 500 KB. zamiast 100KB jak było do niedawna.

PS Not that this has anything to do with the EURO, but on June 24th the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner will land in Warsaw for the first time. LOT Polish Airlines has ordered 8 such aircraft, first will be delivered in April 2012. LOT is the launch European carrier of the Dreamliner ;)

Very true, first Dreamliner in LOT's livery will arrive in April 2012. Following 4 aircraft will be delivered before the end of 2012.:cheers:
The Dreamliners will strengthen LOT's B767 long haul fleet and will allow the airline to expand its route network to the far east (Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing etc.)
In total the carrier ordered 8 Dreamliners plus 6 Options (which may be converted into 787-900s) and 5 Rights.

They do fly their 767s to Hanoi, however in order to compete with giants such as Lufthansa, BA or AF, LOT would have to use technologically advanced, fuel efficient aircraft which will generate profit on these routes. Just because you fill up every seat on a 767 and fly it to Tokyo does not mean that you generate profit. The 767s are old and you simply can't compete with it. In addition, remember that airlines generate most revenue on business routes and business passengers who are time sensitive, and not cost sensitive. LOT's current business class is a joke on board the 767s.
Flying the Dreamliner to Asia is the right product and service offered to business passengers, which will allow you to generate a profit ;)
To sum it up, flying a 787 on a route between Warsaw - Tokyo is much more economically feasible and cost effective than flying a 767 on the same route. Why do you think DC 10s or A300 are predominantly used on cargo routes today? :)

Only giants like Lufthansa are able have Airbus and Boeings and many other types in their fleet - for LOT (since it has 737) Dreamliner was a natural choice.
But anyway - there no point in being too enthusiastic - in 2012 LOT probably will no longer exist - mark my words.

The A330 is nowhere nearly as technologically advanced as the 787, this is why Airbus is developing the A350, which will compete with the 787. In response to your comment about 'Poland making America happy' the 787s in LOT's fleet will be powered by Rolls Royce engines (European manufacturer) not GE (American).
Fleet commonality is an important aspect in keeping airline operating costs and maintenance as low as possible, as suggested by DocentX. Therefore, Airbus is out of the question, besides, why change to Airbus and wait God knows how long for them to be replaced with the new A350. That project will be delayed as well I'm sure.
The long term plan is to have a mix of 787/767 on long haul flights, Embraers and 737's on medium haul flights and either new ATRs or the Dash Q400 on short haul flights.
PS If the Dreamliners were too risky, there wouldn't have been over 800 a/c ordered worldwide and Boeing wouldn't be manufacturing airplanes ;)

But of course it is risky! It's been 4 years since the plane has been rolled ou,. Still no deliveries. No one really knows how the wings will behave in the long run.
Next, 737 that Lot has shopuld be retired ASAP. It is a bit strange they invested so much into dreamliners before taking care of the medium range fleet. Are 737NG expected any time soon?
Mixing new and advanced 787 with old outdated 767 does not seam like a better option, than complete replacement with 330.

787s (which will eventually replace ALL 767s), 737NG, Embraer 195s/175s/170s and ATR 72-600s OR Q400s - decision has not yet been made.

Poland is in EU and simultaneously is an emerging market.
I did not mean to diminish Poland success, in fact out of all EU's "periphery" (PIGS + east), it is the only country that mysteriously escaped burst of a bubble. What I am trying to say is, Poland traditionally is too Eurocentric which prevents it from capitalizing form its position.
We live in a new world now. What used to be a golden billion a decade ago look more like chubby old guys with lots of debt and little potential left.

Than, in one dramatic moment UEFA replaced Dnipro (who did have stadium, but not much more) with Kharkiv (who completed Stadium & Airport in a short period of time).
I am glad for Kharkiv who got this chance and doing quite well. But from the point of view of hotels, logistics and tourist infrastructure Odesa would be a far better choice. Not to mention the Black Sea. It's a bit bizzar that Odesa is not Euro 2012 city (same goes to Krakow). But it was probably good to give chance others.
Anyway, here comes Chornomorets Stadium in Odesa (to be completed this year). Probably, it will be used by one of the team, as a base.

J@nek June 15th, 2011, 09:23 AM Since Poland is getting 8 new Boeing Dreamliners, will they be used for flights to North America and Europe? I read that they willl be used as flights for Asia.
The first few Dreamliners (lets say the first 5 that are delivered) will definitely be utilized on Asian routes, as passengers flying to Asia are more demanding. The 767s will continue to service N.America. As the number of Dreamliners grows to 8 and hopefully 14 eventually, the 767s will be gradually phased out and replaced by the 787. The Dreamliners will not be used on European routes.

how many times you've been editing this post. first i was quoting first type of your post, then the second, and now i count third type. you know, for last month i've read a lot of polish articles about ukrainian preparations, in which cleve polish journalists go to the ukrainian cities on the construction sites and unfinished objects. an the only what I heard is "judging judging judging", so I think in thats way, when you have a problem in your own house, go to your neigbour and look what problems are there. So I make the conclusion about polish problems. mb my manner to speak English is not so casual, cause I have not a lot of practice in it, so my appologize to this.

J@nek June 15th, 2011, 02:41 PM Im sorry to say it but Krakow's terminal looks like a shack in comparison to the new terminals in Wroclaw, Gdansk or Lwow. It is the second busiest airport in Poland and should have a passenger terminal with a capacity of 5 million passengers per year. It is the number one tourist destination in Poland, however, the passenger terminal is unacceptable. Like you said, hopefully construction of the new terminal extension starts soon and in a few years we can say that Krakow has a world class terminal. For now, terminals in Katowice, Wroclaw, Gdansk and soon even in Rzeszow will be better.

Excuse me? I really hate contributing into this pointless mutual mocking, but what is easier to judge: the exterior look when more than 50% of it is already done, or the seating & color scheme (which was an issue) when less than 1% of the chairs are attached?
As to Wroclaw exterior, my first impression was not too good. But if one considers that the stadium will be useed in night, with proper lighting it will be just wonderful.
In fact, this applies also to Gdansk and Warsaw- the exterior material might look a bit cheap up close during the day, but night view is the whole new story.
So please guys, let's wait to see the final result and stop this useless arguments.
Let's just enjoy the moment. I seriously doubt that we will see this scale of infrastructure development in each of the two counties after Euro (even though officials try to convince us otherwise).

J@nek June 17th, 2011, 01:01 AM This youtube video gives us an idea of just how long the southern, central and northern piers combined are at the Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport.
Combined the piers stretch 700 meters (similar to Munich's terminal). The central and southern piers will be open in July 2011. When this happens, the northern pier will predominantly be used for non-Schengen flights while the central and southern piers will be used for Schengen.:cheers:
Also visible in the video is the construction of the S2 highway (Warsaw's southern bypass).

Wroclaw's train station is being renovated completely, and it will be incredible when it's done. Anything planned for Gdansk? The exterior is great-looking, but the station itself needs some serious work......and security.

18 in Business Class (comparable to First Class standards)
21 in Premium Economy
213 in Economy
All classes will offer IFE systems, LOT will receive it's first Dreamliner in April 2012.

Poland 'LOT' ordered 8 787-800s with 6 options which may be converted into 787-900s in the long run. For now, the 800s are large enough for LOT. They are larger than the 767-300 but a bit smaller than the 777. :)

maxarch June 26th, 2011, 10:10 AM Maybe some fans from Europe..., but people from all over the world would like to come to London to see the 2012 Summer Olimpic Games (which be held the same time).You do realize that Euro 2012 - 12 or 16 european teams, London 2012 - 150? countries from all over the world...but still, according to uefa, number of tickets based on the number of requests from people outside Europe will be way way bigger, comparing to the previous european championships..

It's just sour grapes from someone who lost the original bid fueled by the Polish media's endless desire to undermine the Euro 2012 project every step of the way. Do you think it would have been cheaper had HOK been awarded the contract? Of course he is not going to say anything positive about this stadium. He's just another typical Polish whiner criticizing the country from abroad.

"michał" - Michał Karaś is a editor in chief stadiony.net - one of the largest stadiums websites all over the world. His knowledge about stadiums and supporting is so huge that he even acts as an expert in Polish TV. I'm sure that he knows more about National Stadium than mr Obiała.

That is exactly the point which - as we can all see now in Polish media - caused another wave of criticism without any justification as it is either a manipulation, or misinformation (maybe in some criteria it may be found the most expensive, but not in general), or simply a lie. Obiała either didn't realize what his words will create in Poland or simply didn't care. At the same time accusing PL.2012 of being the propagandists here...

Z uwagi na brak pozwolenia na użytkowanie stadionu PGE Arena Gdańsk, negatywną opinię Państwowej Straży Pożarnej w zakresie warunków bezpieczeństwa na obiekcie, a także brak odbiorów budowlanych, eksploatacja stadionu PGE Arena Gdańsk jest niemożliwa.
W związku z powyższym, termin rozpoczęcia dystrybucji karnetów na sezon 2011/2012 zostanie podany później. Za utrudnienia wszystkich sympatyków Biało-Zielonych przepraszamy!
Z powodu niewydania pozwolenia na użytkowanie stadionu PGE Arena Gdańsk przez nadzór budowlany, Klub nie może też potwierdzić daty meczu otwarcia z zagranicznym rywalem. Decyzja co do organizacji tego spotkania zostanie ogłoszona w późniejszym terminie.
