View Full Version : EURO 2012: Poland and Ukraine preparations
ufonut November 30th, 2007, 08:36 PM Cause it's true. Poland is waaay behing Germany in terms of infrastructure. It's a fact.
It has nothing to do with empathy.
Ukraine better start doing something about its infrastructure or in 6 years it will 100 years behind Poland.
Adiks November 30th, 2007, 08:51 PM Cause it's true. Poland is waaay behing Germany in terms of infrastructure. It's a fact.
It has nothing to do with empathy.
Ukraine better start doing something about its infrastructure or in 6 years it will 100 years behind Poland.
That was an example. What I ment was that the fact of being less wealthy shouldn't be so directly pointed out.
lukay December 1st, 2007, 12:22 AM I think that the point delfin was trying to make is that Poland is ahead of Ukraine in just about everything besides building stadiums, I'm refering here to the Euro games of course. Some posts before everybody was saying how Ukraine is way ahead of Poland because few stadiums are getting build. The truth is, that stadiums are only part of the story. Thers roads, railroads, airports, hotels etc that are as important.
VelesHomais December 1st, 2007, 01:11 AM Why does everyone focus on ukrainian stadiums and not infrastructure plans and projects that are already underway such as airport terminals, subways, hotels, roads etc. of which we informed you guys? Just because we're building stadiums instead of thinking about them doesn't mean nothing else is being done.
By the way, one of the reasons why Ukraine doesn't buy foreign buses, trolleys, trams, subways and trains is because we make all of that ourselves, they're not of the most remarkable design but it supports our economy and we have too many protectionist laws.
Ukrainian tram, made in Dnipro (yes I know those EU made trams look a lot cooler)

Ukrainian bus, made in Lviv

Ukrainian metro train, made in Poltava region
http://www.kvsz.com/images/m-10.jpg
Our "leaders" decided to apply protectionism over the last decade, it slowed down growth and liberalization of the economy, but our companies survived and their products are now finally gaining in quality and will soon be able to compete with western vehicles.
Delfin, that's great that your town is getting 2 tram and 6 trolleybus lines in one year. Poland is reforming itself quite rapidly. I'm happy for Poland to which I owe some percentage of my blood ;)
Singidunum December 1st, 2007, 01:20 AM Ukraine: where insanity comes alive
 Well Ukraine and the rest of Eastern Europe. That render is hopefully just a bad taste joke
Bandera December 1st, 2007, 01:21 AM Why do polish people start this stupid argument? If you have better infrastructure then its good for you! Dont worry about us and dont tell us what to do we know what we have to build and modernize we will do fine. I just hope you guys do as well as we!
lukay December 1st, 2007, 02:37 AM ^It's not that we start the stupid argument, we just respond to people getting worried that Poland is behind Ukraine just because we are a little behind in our stadium constructions. People seem to ignore that theres more to organizing euro than stadiums.
VelesHomais December 1st, 2007, 02:50 AM Not really, you're just trying to make it look like Ukraine is so stupid that it's ONLY building stadiums and ignores everything else.
lukay December 1st, 2007, 09:15 AM All I'm saying is that Ukrainian forumers seem way too optimistic about progress in their country and way too concerned about development in Poland.
VelesHomais December 1st, 2007, 12:07 PM Optimistic? It's the Poles that keep on saying that nothing happens in Poland and then another half of Poles criticizing them. While Ukrainian forumers are discussing whether Euro will be taken away from us (just not here, where we pretend that everything is fine) or not.
Blok December 1st, 2007, 01:19 PM It's the Poles that keep on saying that nothing happens in Poland
why don't you do the same(about Ukraine) ?:ohno:

Blok December 1st, 2007, 11:22 PM Actually I do understand cyrillic and ukrainian is much easyer to understand then russian metbe it's just more simmilar to polish but I think you should be more pessimistic also in english so everyone can understand... it's not propaganda thread isn't it:dunno:
Pavlo December 2nd, 2007, 02:22 AM I do. He doesn't have to. What's you point
My point is that we're not over the top happy about how preparation is going for Euro 2012. He doesn't seem to understand that.

Second City December 3rd, 2007, 07:49 PM Ukraine coach concerned about Kiev stadium for Euro 2012
KIEV, Dec 3 (Reuters) - A dispute surrounding a construction site next to Kiev's main stadium could lead to Ukraine losing the chance to host the final of the 2012 European championship, national coach Oleg Blokhin warned on Monday.
Ukraine are co-hosting the tournament with Poland but both FIFA and UEFA have said the construction of a shopping and leisure centre by Kiev's 84,000-seat Soviet-era Olympic stadium would break safety rules by blocking some emergency exits.

Yeah, you are building many +40.000 stadiums although you just need +30.000.
Maybe therefore Turkey will built for EURO 2016 or EURO 2020 more +40.000 stadiums :D
Genç December 10th, 2007, 02:01 PM I think it's much better to build 40k+ though - it's more impressive, brings in more money and leaves behind much better stadia for after the competition.
IMO, building ~30k stadiums [for Euro competitions] are a waste.
sampras December 10th, 2007, 03:26 PM ^^ I'm not sure if you're right, as in many countries even 30k stadiums will be empty during no-EURO games probably. And as we all know it is all about the money. If on 40k stadium there will be 8-12k of spectators on league games no club will be able to pay the bills...
....but on the other hand 30k is not enough for EURO games
VelesHomais December 10th, 2007, 05:34 PM The thread is over 500 posts, shouldn't it be closed and a new one opened?

Some controversy around it, since LAZ (Lviv Auto Zavod) is coming out with their trams in a few months. In any case, by 2012 Kyivan transportation system will completely replace metro's and trams.

sampras December 22nd, 2007, 12:04 PM According to Ministry of Sport, the government will not give money for Poznan, Gdańsk, Wroclał EURO arenas (previous government decided to support cities with approx 30% founding) They will only give money for Warsaw stadium. As they said "previous agreements were made with former government not with current one"
So Communist idea "only capitol that matters" is still in use in Poland :ohno:
fu#$%'n bustards...
It means that 3 cities will have to take huge loans :-/
wisza90 December 23rd, 2007, 11:40 PM But sport ministry said that money will be given in next year. In my opinion it is good decidion. Until we havent got projects and finished paperwork monet is not nessecary.
sampras December 24th, 2007, 02:52 PM I must disagree.
I know that 2 stadiums are 100% virtual only,
but Wroclaw stadium is pushing forward...
In Poznan it is all about money - if there will be no gov. support
the stadium will be much smaller (we have 2 projects: 'small' and 'big' capacity)
And because we have construction underway all the changes cause stadium look
more and more crap...

Poland needs about 300 000 workers.Due to EU and Schengen laws, we have very stricted law for employing non EU citizens. We suffer because lack of construction workers, Ukrainians were bless for us but since we joined Schengen it is very difficult and expensive to enter Poland for them, there are strikes in front of Polish embassies because of that and demonstrations by Polish - Ukranian borders. Foreigners were given working visa for 3 months, Polish goverment is about to change it and give so called blue card for much longer time.

CANIBALY February 2nd, 2008, 01:35 PM Euro 2012 hosts get Uefa warning
Poland and Ukraine have been warned by governing body Uefa to speed up their preparations for Euro 2012.
There have been concerns that political change in both countries has affected projects such as stadiums and roads.
“The next four to six months will be crucial to avoid any critical slippage in infrastructure projects,” said Uefa president Michel Platini.
Uefa general secretary David Taylor added: “There has been progress, but it needs to be accelerated.”
Platini made the statement after a two-day meeting of Uefa’s executive committee in Zagreb which reviewed a report on the progress the two countries have made.
Poland and Ukraine, who were awarded the competition in April last year, have admitted that preparations had fallen behind because of political instability in both countries.
However, with new governments elected at the end of last year, Platini hopes that preparations can continue without hinderence.
“There is a need for creating government mobilisation by making the national authorities aware of the crucial need to set up a governance and management structure to lead all the projects related to Euro 2012,” he added.
“Uefa is totally committed to do everything possible, in the next few months, to assist and support the two associations, at both the advisory and administrative level and political level in order to guarantee the success of the project.”
The hosts have pledged that there is no danger of them failing to stage the event.
“The situation is very clear now and we have new authorities which are determined to fulfil all obligations,” said Polish Football Association president Michal Listkiewicz.
“Uefa is aware, as we are, that it will not be possible to complete some of the stadiums by the mid-2010 deadline as planned but there is no reason to panic and we have asked the soccer body to extend the deadline by six to eight months.
“The situation has improved in the last few months and there is no danger of not meeting all the requirements on time.”
Listkiewicz’s Ukrainian counterpart Grigoriy Surkis added: “Political stability is crucial and it’s now showing in both countries, which gives us a great opportunity to catch up.”
Taylor pledged Uefa’s full support to the hosts and said there were no plans to move the tournament to another country.
“We are not thinking about that at all at the moment,” he said. “There were some difficulties but these difficulties are now behind us.
“The two governments are committed to making this work.
“We certainly are not in the position of approaching and discussing alternative locations with any country at this stage at all. We categorically deny that.”

VelesHomais February 3rd, 2008, 01:31 AM After months of debates about who will own, who will pay and other nonesense of the sort regarding the new Odesa football arena, the decision has been made and demolition of the old stadium is in full progress, as soon as it is over a new arena will begin construction in its space. Construction will take approximately 2.5 years and will be over by late 2010. Approximate cost of the new arena is estimated to be around 120 million euros, but as usually, it will rise during the construction.
Previously this design was presented a couple of months ago, but the final design is still unknown, planning contineus while the old arena is being demolished. The planned capacity is 50 000

CANIBALY February 6th, 2008, 03:12 PM National Stadium Ready to Roll
By W.Ż.
6 February 2008
The government Jan. 31 unveiled plans for a national stadium in Warsaw.
The stadium is to be the venue for the opening match of the Euro 2012 European soccer championships. European soccer's governing body, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), has sternly criticized Polish and Ukrainian delays in preparing for the tournament. Officials from the relevant government departments of both countries, however, are confident that they will be ready on time.
The project designers, JSK Architekci, presented plans and a model of the stadium, complete with a facade designed as a fluttering Polish flag. A company official gave assurances that the facility will meet all UEFA criteria. The new stadium will be built on the earthen embankment of the capital's Dziesięciolecia Stadium. The pitch will be about eight meters higher than the existing one with underground parking for 1,700 cars. Existing tunnels will provide access to the parking garage. The facade will be made of transparent materials to give spectators a view of the city while viewers can get around via two arcades encircling the complex. There will be a permanent roof over the stand while the pitch will have a light cover that will unfold from the inside out. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 55,000.
Construction is scheduled to commence in March 2009 and finish in the fall of 2011. Preliminary work to reinforce the grounds with 20,000 stakes should be under way by September. The German consortium, led by JSK Architekci, has designed many similar projects in Germany, Poland, China and South Africa. In Poland, the consortium designed the Legia Warszawa soccer stadium and has won the tender to design the Wrocław stadium.
The latest UEFA report on the Euro 2012 preparations is a rap over the knuckles for Poland. Polish authorities have been roundly criticized for insufficient progress in building stadiums, freeways and airports. Even worse is what the report says about the country's lack of organization and its level of political incompetence and interference. Poland had three sports ministers in the space of a year and UEFA claims the government has been unable to devise a workable cooperative arrangement with the Polish soccer association.
UEFA president Michel Platini warned that further delays over the next five to six months may result in Poland and Ukraine losing the right to host the tournament. Italy and Scotland are standing by.
The Minister for Sport and Tourism Mirosław Drzewiecki has been at pains to play down the report, pointing out that the UEFA officials visited Poland in November and that much has changed since then. Apart from the National Stadium, the Wrocław design is at an advanced stage and Gdańsk is soon to announce its stadium designer. "After two months, the findings of the UEFA report are out of date. There's every reason to be optimistic that Poland and Ukraine will be able to organize the championships," said Drzewiecki.
The minister also said that Prime Minister Donald Tusk was due to sign cooperative agreements with Ukraine over joint ventures and Euro 2012 on Feb. 26 during a visit to Kiev.

We don't know for sure yet. Hochtief is still developing the project.
What we do know is details of the complex around the stadium:
Fitness centre with pool, cafes, restaurants, stores, 12 story hotel complex, winter training complex, and multilevel parking for 5,000 cars. The roof is to be of clear polymer, new display and lighting will also be installed.

I think president would agree with you, the following is a report from Reuters:
KIEV, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Ukraine will invite UEFA chief Michel Platini to tour a new stadium to see for himself the ex-Soviet state's progress in preparing to co-host the Euro 2012 finals, President Viktor Yushchenko said on Tuesday.
"In a few weeks, I will invite Mr Platini to Dnipropetrovsk," local news agencies quoted Yushchenko as saying after a visit to a stadium nearing completion in the central city to be used in the 2012 tournament.
"I would like it known that Dnipropetrovsk is showing a high level of readiness of its sports facilities for Euro 2012."
A UEFA delegation is visiting Ukraine this week to inspect building sites and other facilities.
Platini last month expressed alarm that Ukraine and their co-hosts Poland were behind schedule in their preparations and the coming months would prove "decisive".
Authorities have since taken a decision to allow Kiev's main stadium to be used by dismantling parts of an adjacent shopping centre which threatened to disqualify it on safety grounds.

wholagun March 4th, 2008, 04:33 AM Gdansk could lose Euro 2012 to Krakow
03.03.2008 15:50
UEFA representatives have given Krakow the OK to host the Euro 2012 football championships to be co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine.
Five UEFA experts, who inspected Krakow’s progress in the Euro 2012 preparation on Friday, may include the city in the list of official event hosts at the expense of Gdansk, reports TVN24 news channel.
One of the Polish officials who accompanied the UEFA delegation in Krakow has revealed that the experts were mainly impressed by the city’s infrastructure, including good access from the stadium to five star hotels and the railway station.
The roads linking Krakow with the Czech Republic and Slovakia scored the lowest in UEFA’s opinion.
Unofficially, the UEFA delegates were frustrated by the overall progress of the preparation for Euro 2012 in Chorzow, south Poland, Warsaw and Gdansk, an anonymous official from the Krakow Town Hall told the Gazeta Krakowska daily. (mj)
http://www.polskieradio.pl/thenews/sport/?id=77180
can anyone from Gdansk shed more light on this - is there any truth in what UEFA is saying about the inadequate infrastructure in Gdansk compared to Krakow? I'd be a shame to lose the chance to showcase the stadium design to the rest of Europe.

(updates with UEFA reaction)
By Sabina Zawadzki
KIEV, March 28 (Reuters) - The prime ministers of Poland and Ukraine sought on Friday to alleviate UEFA fears over the progress of their preparations to host Euro 2012.
Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and her counterpart Donald Tusk also signed an agreement to set up a body to co-operate on the vast amount of work both countries need to complete, such as modernising transport and building stadiums.
Michel Platini, head of European football's ruling body UEFA, expressed alarm in January that the two former Communist countries were falling behind schedule.
"We expected and can continue to expect critical warnings from UEFA. It is the responsibility of UEFA and Mr Platini to show every single day what is not yet satisfactory," Tusk told a news conference.
"We both are, both governments, working as fast as we can, and I am convinced 100 percent that we will manage it."
Tymoshenko said she believed work had considerably improved since the two new prime ministers were sworn in, he last November, she a month later.
"I think that our meeting, the signing of the appropriate documents and also the recent introduction in our countries of a number of necessary measures will change the position and view of Mr Platini as to the quality of preparations," she said. Since Platini's remarks, Ukraine solved a construction dispute surrounding its main Kiev stadium that threatened to prevent it from hosting the final, while the western city of Lviv found a contractor to start building its stadium. Later on Friday, Platini cautiously welcomed the recent progress and said UEFA would do "everything necessary" to ensure the tournament went ahead in Poland and Ukraine.
"When we expressed our concerns in January it was because we found the organisers had been sleeping a little," Platini told reporters following a UEFA executive committee meeting in Liechtenstein.
"Now they have woken up and we have woken up so there has been some headway. But we will still have to wait a few months to see if things are really improving."

Kampflamm March 31st, 2008, 12:49 AM Oh boy...who might step in to host it in 2012?
Pavlo March 31st, 2008, 01:32 AM Moldova and Albania.
paku March 31st, 2008, 10:11 AM Michel Platini, head of European football's ruling body UEFA, expressed alarm in January that the two former Communist countries were falling behind schedule.
Just wondering... Was Germany in 1965 still called a former nazi country?
sampras March 31st, 2008, 11:35 AM no, but It seems it should be called this way till now even :D
Kampflamm March 31st, 2008, 02:09 PM You've got to look at the context. When the NPD did well in the 60s, people were referring back to the Weimar and Nazi eras as well.
no, but It seems it should be called this way till now even
Please elaborate.
Triceratops March 31st, 2008, 02:56 PM At least the good thing is that the championship wouldn't be canceled and finally some progress going ahead in Kyiv and Lviv.
VelesHomais March 31st, 2008, 04:35 PM The worst problem that may occur is that some westerners will have to endure some bad roads in Ukraine and their tiny cars will get some dents, not a big deal :D
They might also encounter some unusual driving skills
R8uBzWQZgWU
sampras March 31st, 2008, 05:01 PM Please elaborate.
Poland is a former Communist country in the same way as Germany is a former Nazi country.
this is wee bit O-T
but it is annoying when Poland and Ukraine are called in this way.
I could say instead of France "a former kingdom" but why ? what is the purpose?
VelesHomais March 31st, 2008, 05:32 PM Yeah, I understand why they would call us that way throughout the 90's, but in 2008? Is this the title we're stuck with forever "former communist country"?
Cracovia March 31st, 2008, 05:32 PM I think the whole former communist thing is too try and explain why westerners eyes our countries might need updating, while reminding them of our hard times under communism. I guess it also gives them some sense of superiority...
For example we have bad roads the "because we were a communist country"....ect
Burislav imagine the announcer at the summit speech welcomes the " the Prime ministers of the Former communist Republic of Poland and the Former communist Republic of Ukraine" lol
Kampflamm March 31st, 2008, 07:15 PM Exactly. EEurope still lags behind in many areas because of Communist rule. That's why it's mentioned all the time.

One of the highrises will be a hotel, another an office tower.
Odesa is no longer a reserve city, it will host a minimum of 2 games, but not at the expense of another city not hosting the event.
It will be a completely football stadium without the running tracks.
wholagun April 6th, 2008, 02:11 AM i like it - but I don't.
It's very elagant with the glass, but at the same time I wanted something more unique
Triceratops April 6th, 2008, 02:09 PM IMO these hotel and office twin towers totally don't fit there. Their design is so simple and they don't look well at all near the arena. They could have done at least something to improve their not good-looking appearance.
VelesHomais April 6th, 2008, 02:20 PM They are simple not to attract any attention away from the stadium, so it's perfect ;)

Z miast tzw. wysokiego ryzyka trafiły do grupy ryzyka średniego. Zdaniem prezesa PZPN, Michała Listkiewicza, to ogromny sukces.
UEFA ocenia stan przygotowań miast do organizacji EURO m.in. na podstawie postępów w budowie stadionów, źródeł finansowania inwestycji, infrastruktury i przeszkolenia ludzi. Kolejny raport UEFA już w maju.
briefly:
Wrocław, Poznań i Kraków - have moved from High Risk Group were moved to Medium Risk Group, (Listkiewicz - director of PZPN (polish football association) stated that it is huge improvement that did not happen before (to improve in such'a short time)
while Warsaw, Chorzów and Gdańsk are still fare behind (Gdańsk looks to improve though)

wholagun April 15th, 2008, 06:46 AM bastards!!!! Over all I'm more impressed with Ukrainian stadiums then Polish I must admit.
XAPAKTEPHИK April 15th, 2008, 09:45 AM ^^ LOL
I will say exactly the same about beautiful Polish roads/motorways - Viva la EU :D
Hotels wise although Poland was unquestionably much better in this regard - Ukraine is fast closing with numerous large projects and current construction - so we will be on par :)
In terms of smaller tourist-oriented comfort projects - at first I thought only Poland is doing that - but apparently there are A LOT of those all over Western Ukraine.
So all in all:
Stadiums: UA => PL
Transport: PL >> UA
Hotels: UA ~= PL
Small Comfort Stuff: UA ~= PL
In the end it's the hotels and small comfort stuff that'll be making most money :)
Well - and paid motorways, which Ukraine doesn't have, but might have one. Poland?
:)
So Far So Good :)
Cracovia April 15th, 2008, 01:09 PM They started the preparation of the terrain under the national stadium

Don't forget that this is a renovation of an existing stadium. I believe that the main "cup" w/ seats will remain largely unchanged - basically the way it was. I think they originally designed it with that in mind - and minimized the distances etc. for the top levels.
Now we're only waiting for the news for the other stadium in Kyiv - specifically for football.
paku April 16th, 2008, 10:28 AM Truly beautiful! :applause:
XAPAKTEPHИK April 16th, 2008, 10:43 AM Exactly. EEurope still lags behind in many areas because of Communist rule. That's why it's mentioned all the time.

www.sercan.de April 16th, 2008, 10:51 AM Are you sure its just 85,000?
Current 2 tier bowl hold 82k as i know and they added a huge 3rd tier at the main stand!!!!
Or am i wrong and the current 2 tier stadium won't stay?
XAPAKTEPHИK April 16th, 2008, 10:57 AM I'm not so sure about the details.
But, i meat it is supposed to be a renovation. They might add stuff and replace stuff - but not build new from scratch.
I guess we just wait for the project details to appear on the Taiwanese site.

sampras April 16th, 2008, 12:18 PM Don't forget that this is a renovation of an existing stadium. I believe that the main "cup" w/ seats will remain largely unchanged - basically the way it was.
(...) they added a huge 3rd tier at the main stand!!!!
seems they will add 3rd level.
so why not to build upward instead going wide?
I know that in this way preparing foundations and the whole stand itself might be difficult, and could not look as good as proposed design, still IMHO stadiums should be designed for spectators. Design is also important but don't forget the main purpose of stadium ;)
Actual design is really great, I'm just concerned about viewers in the back row ;)
www.sercan.de April 16th, 2008, 01:56 PM measured it at skecthup

Pavlo April 22nd, 2008, 01:15 AM UEFA on June 27 will come to Ukraine to judge the progress made preparing for Euro 2012. UEFA officials are concerned that if authorities do not begin reconstructing airports by May-June, then Ukraine will officially lose its right to host the co-event with Poland.
Many people are quite pessimistic, and are leaning towards thinking that on this day Ukraine will be dropped from the joint-venture.
Thank you politicians.

Maurycy April 22nd, 2008, 07:38 PM ^^
we'll never give it away.
I don't understand why you are so pessimistic there in Ukraine?
You have 2 stadiums almost finished and others on their good way.
Recently here in Poland there's been a fuss that we won't be ready on time, yet now everything is going on quite well.
Warsaw's project will have been finished ahead of schedule, in Gdansk and Wroclaw the construction should start this soon, Poznan, Krakow, Chorzow still gradually modernize their areas.
Construction of many parts of highways (A1,A2,A4) will start this year as well.
Quite a significant stretch in north is to be ready til summer.
The promblem might crop up in terms of railway stations (modernizations or constructions) in Warsaw, but let's hope that our national railway will finally strat putting it's words into action.
So, as not that long time ago I became more&more pessimistic now I regained full trust in success.
Hope everything will be all right both in PL&UKR.
Triceratops April 22nd, 2008, 08:21 PM It's not the right time to give up! It doesn't seem as if Ukraine is getting on very slowly. Indeed, it's preparations are very visible. As well as Poland, it is building new roads, new hotels, some of the stadiums are u/c, all of the others are already approved and are just waiting for construction. So I don't find any reasons to be affraid of. The only thing which somehow can pause or harm the development is inflation.

well we recently got a positive result from UEFA, the truth is it is good uefa is scaring us with giving the euro to the Italians because it is making us do the work faster, also us Poles love to be pessimistic and complain so they are supplying us with some ammo for our favourite past time at least...
btw it seems as though things are really beggining to pick up here:nuts: though we probably wont get the railways uo to scratch in time
We will have to see which 8 of the 12 cities uefa decides will host a game, hopefully 8 will be ready and by no means do they have to chose 4 Polish and 4 Ukrainian ones. I just want them to have it in Krakow hopefully without jepordising any Polish host city
