Of course I can believe that something like this has been built in Poland. What I meant by that is that we really, really have come a long way as a country. Growing up in communist Poland I would never dare to imagine that a day would come where I would witness this kind of progress take place and see the country flourish the way it has in the past decade. This stadium wonderfully symbolizes all that we have achieved in the past 20 years.

.
Hi Eno, most probably I wouldn't be able to name that kind of feeling any better than you have had:). You're my hero:)

Dude, do us and yourself a favour and instead of spending time on this forum engaging in fatuous arguments with the Ukrainians sign up for some more English grammar lessons. Please.

Eno - buddy - don't even try to make any sense of some of those kids,( I reckon) - it's just waste of time, regards

Well guys we are all happy about the infrastructure development ( I am talking about both countries here), but don't forgety that just 7 years ago Greece hosted Olympics, and Portugal-Euro.

Just a thought.

Well, by the same token one could also say that Germany hosted the World Cup just five years ago and Canada the Winter Olympics last year.

The building was a neglected, dilapidated disaster prior to this renovation. I'm sure it'll be in fine shape in a few months. It definitely could have used a much, much bigger renovation but at least now it's presentable.

Yes, there will be intermediate stops between Warsaw Frederic Chopin airport and Warszawa Centralna (the train will definitely stop at Warszawa Zachodnia and a few other stops). The travel time will be around 20 mins if I am not mistaken, between the airport and the city center.:)

What was the final cost of Lviv stadium? I'm really suprised in a positive way. I was visiting that building site around July 2009 and at that time there was one big hole in the ground with few trucks around, what is more there were some rumours that there was no money or contractor claimed that there was too little to finish it. At that time I was almost sure that there will be some huge delays and Lviv will have problem to hold Euro in the city, which I would regret very much, as Lviv deserved it. But it hopefully turned out very nicely. Congrats!

200 mln euro.
By the way, that is more or less how much Alpina wanted for building it on the first place. The first contractor ( the one who scrued things up) was supposed to build it for 100-120 mln euro.

Nope. The Gdańsk Stadium costs were at the same level, maybe a bit higher (~860mln PLN, ~215mln EUR).

Of course not. Let's simply enjoy the fact that there are 8 excellent stadiums worthy of world cup. And 10+ very decent airports, and many more stuff that would not be here without Euro.

Poland and Ukraine lose momentum with issues over shirts and injuries

Kit controversies and player availability aside, the co-hosts at Euro 2012 both hope to make an impact

A nation's preparations for a major tournament can be derailed by many things: player unrest, poor results, political upheaval, to name the most likely. But as Poland moves ever closer to its defining moment of modern times – co-hosting Euro 2012 with Ukraine – its people appear to have stumbled on a new way to throw plans off-track.

With seven months to go before their homeland becomes the centre of Europe's sporting universe Poland supporters are raging at the decision of their football association, the PZPN, to remove the white eagle – the country's oldest national symbol – from the team's kit in favour of its own logo, a less than inspiring red and yellow squiggle.

"Where's the eagle?" chanted the 30,000-plus crowd who gathered at the newly built Municipal Stadium in Wroclaw on Friday to see Poland, wearing their new kit for the first time, lose 2-0 in a friendly with Italy. "Screw the FA!" was another of their cat-calls. Indeed, the atmosphere became so toxic that the Poland captain, Jakub Blaszczykowski, later claimed it had affected the team's display against the 2006 World Cup winners. "We had nothing to do with the decision [to change the badge]," he said. "We're here to play and, if we're not supported, it's a problem for us."

The issue has even reached parliament, with the country's president, Bronislaw Komorowski, adding his weight on Friday, which just happened to be Poland's independence day, to the view that the eagle should never have been removed from the national kit. "This is a symbol that unites us," he said. "It's important for the people. I expect that somebody will explain why this happened."The timing of this PR gaffe – which the PZPN admit originated for purely commercial reasons – is particularly unfortunate, given Poland's form. Prior to Friday they had lost twice in 15 games and, in that period, beaten Argentina 2-1 and drawn 2-2 with Germany. They had scored eight goals in five games prior to the blank against Italy, when they would have scored again had Blaszczykowski converted an 85th‑minute penalty. They next face Hungary, in Poznan, on Tuesday.

The progress is not coincidental. Under Franciszek Smuda, the former defender who took over from Leo Beenhakker in October 2009 after Poland's failure to qualify for last year's World Cup, the team has steadily evolved into an effective counterattacking unit built around a young and stable spine. Arsenal's Wojciech Szczesny is now the established No1 and the Borussia Dortmund trio of Lukasz Piszczek, Błaszczykowski and Robert Lewandowski fill the key positions in defence, midfield and attack.

"Lewandowski is the star of the team," said Maciej Iwanski, a sports commentator for TVP, Poland's largest TV channel. "He has scored many times for Poland since making his debut [13 in 38 appearances] and the nation expects him to score at the Euros. There are worries defensively, mainly at set-pieces but Szczesny is proving to be a reliable keeper. He, too, could be important next year."

The outrage at the new kit aside, excitement is growing among Poles for Euro 2012. Poland's form, allied to home advantage – the team will have played at each of their four host-venue stadiums prior to June – has fuelled belief that they can qualify for the knockout stages of a European Championship for the first time.

That is also the hope inside Ukraine, who, unlike Poland, have never previously taken part at a European championship. For their manager, Oleg Blokhin, however, who took over in April, the concerns right now are purely onfield.

Ukraine's form over the past year has been poor, with the team winning only three of their past 12 games and in that time losing 4-1 and 4-0 to France and Czech Republic, respectively – results that laid bare their defensive frailties. Those were on show again on Friday when Ukraine led 3-1 against Germany at the Olympic stadium in Kiev – where the final of Euro 2012 will be held – before drawing 3-3.

Injuries have been the problem for Blokhin – he was denied 10 players for Friday's friendly – and the 59-year-old will hope that once everyone is fit, his team, who face Austria on Tuesdayon Tuesday, will become sturdier at the back while maintaining a high-pressing approach in attack.

Blokhin's other worry centres around Andriy Shevchenko. The once talismanic striker has been beset by chronic back problems and poor form – the 35-year-old has scored only four times for Dynamo Kyiv this season and once in his last three international matches – and, though he is assured a place in Ukraine's Euro 2012 squad, the former Chelsea forward cannot be relied on to worry opposition defences.

"Blokhin recognises Shevchenko is no longer a cornerstone of the team," said the Ukrainian journalist Oleksandr Sereda. "He is still a leader but there are young players ready to take their place." That includes 22-year-old Andriy Yarmolenko, also of Dynamo Kyiv, who scored twice against Germany. "He is the most talented young player in Ukraine right now," Sereda said. "He can make the difference."

Young hope defines both Poland and Ukraine and, kit controversies aside, they are both looking to make an impact as the first former eastern bloc nations to host a major tournament since 1976. "This is the biggest thing to happen to our country, and maybe Ukraine, too, since independence," said Iwanski. "It's now for the teams to deliver."

Amazing videos, stadium, and most importantly, atmosphere!

Could you tell me how much tickets were for that game? I'm just trying to compare because for today's Poland match vs Hungary tickets were 40, 80, or 120 zl and thus was part of the reason of small attendance today in Poznan...that and besides many other things PZPN has done, they tried explaining low attendance due to 'bad weather' ....lol look at the packed stadium in Lviv with the snow, or how about champions league games, weather is not the real reason here.

lack of arms of Poland on t-shirts (last scandal) and bad game with Italians could be the reason in my opinion. I Also think that you shouldn't compare those stadiums becouse Lviv arena has its first match. It always collects big number of visitors.

The real problem is FIFA/UEFA. They are corrupt to their core, and powerfuil enough to give protection to any national association. Any criminal probe or/and government intervention into any national Football association will immediately result in punishment from UEFA/FIFA. Talk about world government...

Government to impose eagle on Polish sports strips
16.11.2011 08:30
The government wants to force, by law, national sports teams to wear the traditional Polish eagle on their shirts following the unveiling of Poland's eagle-less Euro 2012 strip.

New
New emblem: photo - PAP/ Bartlomiej Zborowski

An amendment to the Sport Act will be put before parliament on Thursday by the ruling Civic Platform.

"Article 13 of the Sports Act says that Polish representatives have the right to use the national emblem on their shirts. We want a small change - instead of giving 'the right' to use the emblem, Polish representatives will be obligated to use the national emblem on the strips,” Civic Platform MP Andrzej Biernat said at a press conference yesterday.

The unveiling last week of Poland's strip for the Euro 2012 football championships caused outrage among traditionalists when the eagle, with crown, was left off the shirts, replaced by the new symbol of the Polish football association (PZPN) which has a vague and highly stylized eagle on it.

Former football player and captain of the national side Roman Kosecki, who is now a Civic Platform MP, says that having the eagle on the shirt is essential for the players to feel pride in playing for Poland.

“We want the eagle on our breasts because playing for the national side is an exceptional honour that everyone remembers for life,” he said.

“Polish kids dream of playing with an eagle on their chests,” he added.

Agnieszka Olejkowska, spokeswoman for the Polish FA says, however, that the eagle won't be coming back on the shirts any time soon.

“The process of designing the strip lasted 18 months and they will be in use as intended, for two years,” she said.

Poland took to the field for the first time in history without eagles on their shorts when they played Italy last Friday in Wroclaw: the side lost 0 – 2. (pg)

wtf so PZPN won't put the eagle back on in spite of popular anger and a law demanding it be present? granted the latter is retroactive and I'm not sure how the Polish legal system would interpret retroactive post facto changes to the legal code.

That's false, a train link will be available between Warsaw's City Center and the Modlin train station (located a couple of kms away from the passenger terminal). Regular, free bus service will be initially available between the passenger terminal and Modlin train station. With time (after the Euro) the tracks will be extended all the way to the passenger terminal and a train station will be built at the airport.

The official uefa ball for euro 2012 will be probably called Tango 12. It will be similar to the ball from 1978 WC in Argentina. Idk what it as in common with Poland and Ukraine... Looks like earlier leaks were correct - http://i.wp.pl/a/f/jpeg/27994/pilka_euro2012_design_648.jpeg

Tango is a 'family' of official balls and the name has been used couple of times in wc an ec. So after all this might be a good choice, as at least it follows historical legacy.

Ukraine and Poland – UEFA European Football Championship hosts
The Ukrainian economy has been gradually recovering from the last global market crisis. This can be seen in the 2011 increase in per capita purchasing power to €1,761. Among the countries under review, only the Ukraine can boast a two-digit growth rate (based on the revised figures). However, this ranking must be put into context: The Ukraine remains second-to-last in the country rankings in terms of per capita purchasing power. Ukrainians have on average twice as much per capita purchasing power as inhabitants of Moldova, but only 30 percent of the average purchasing power available to the inhabitants of Poland.

Polish households are also profiting from a dynamic economic situation: The country's per capita purchasing power has grown more than that of any of the EU 27 countries. Even so, with a per capita purchasing power of €6,050, Poles have less than 60 percent of the average purchasing power available to inhabitants of Portugal.

The opening match of the UEFA European Championship will take place in the Polish capital of Warsaw, whose per capita purchasing power of €10,266 makes it by far the wealthiest urban district in the country. Inhabitants of Warsaw have almost 70 percent more money at their disposal than the national average. This equates to almost three times as much as the average amount available to inhabitants of the capital of the Ukraine.

Along with the Ukrainian capital, which is to host the final match of the 2011 UEFA European Football Championship, three additional Ukrainian cities will host the upcoming games: Charkiw, Donezk and Lemberg. All of these cities have a comparable level of purchasing power - around 40 percent below the average available to inhabitants of Kiev. Donezk, the most industrialized area of the country, has a per capita purchasing power that is 35 percent higher than the national average. Charkiw, the fourth largest district in the country, has an above-average level of per capita purchasing power, but even so, it is the "poorest" of the other cities that will be hosting the UEFA European Football Championship matches.

The three other Polish locations hosting matches are among the country's ten wealthiest and largest districts and have a purchasing power level around 80 percent of that available in the capital. Posen, the Polish district with the least amount of purchasing power that will be hosting matches, has a per capita purchasing power of just under €8,000, which is around 60 percent of the European average.

Definitely not before or at time of the Euro, that is simply too early. I think it would be a good idea in the near future however; in Zhulyany the main low cost operator will be Wizz Air whereas in Modlin, Ryanair plans to base up to 20 Boeing 737s in the next few years. Wizz Air will most certainly not 'feed' Ryanair flights.

The only possibility that exists is for Wizz Air to open the route ONLY and if only Wizz Air moves from Frederic Chopin to Modlin, where it will gradually increase the number of destinations/flights and build a strong operating base. In such case, it would make sense for Ukrainian passengers to travel through Warsaw Modlin onwards, similarly as in the case with Katowice.

Wizz typically goes wherever Ryan does. So it's an easy guess that they will be moving to Modlin. Just recall how they got pissed off with closing of the Etiuda terminal.

I see you are well informed Ulyssis :) For now Wizz Air is happy at Frederic Chopin, but you are right, they will indeed most likely move to Modlin as a number of advantages exist for a LCC in operating out of Modlin as opposed to Frederic Chopin

-lower airport/nav fees
-ability to operate 24/7 without restrictions

C'mon are you from this planet?

PIGS = Portugal, Ireleand(Italy) , Greece , Spain.

The good news, Russians will definitely outspend Germans, French and English combined. I would start stocking up wodka right away.

Yea, I know what 'PIGS' countries are, but out of all of them, we only have one - greece in our group. That's why I asked.

I was refering to the teams playing in Poland on group stage (A+C)

Interesting observations:

1) Czech will play all their games in Wroclaw. And for them, it's very close to home.
Not sure how many fans will be able to get tickets, though.
For Wroclaw it's not too good: Russian and Greek fans will probably stay in Warsaw, and only make one day trips to Wroclaw. Poles ans Czechs will be simply coming from home for the game.

2) Sweden plays all group games in Kyiv, Netherland- in Kharkiv, Italy in Pozan. So these cyties will probably be bases for their fans.

Now is the good time to return to the issue of the team camps. We know that England was planning to stay in Krakow regardless of the draw. In a funny way, it sorta make sense: with the sequense Donetsk-Kyiv-Donetsk, they would have to move back and forth anyway. But there is a BIG advantage for England to stay in Poland. They will have an excellent excuse for loosing yet another Euro (too much travel, big distances etc). And England are world champions in excuses.

Strange draw. Generally people in Poland are not satisfied as better teams will play their games in Ukraine.

Polish football fans, especially our hools are dissapointed too as they expect opportunity to stand in front of German, English or Irish :).

The best of today for me is that Italy has cofirmed that they will stay in Cracow during tournament. That means that Cracow will host three national team: Netherland ( they will train on Wisła Kraków stadium ), England ( Hutnik Kraków Stadium ) and Italy ( Cracovia Kraków stadium ).

Despite of not so lucky draw for Ukraine, I hope that your team will reach further stage of EURO. Good luck.

According to polish group: everybody happy :-). But:
With Russia/USSR at home:
3:1, 1:1, 1:1, 0:0, 1:0, 2:1
With Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia at home after 1950:
2:1, 2:0, 2:1, 1:0, 3:0, 2:1, 1:1
And with Greece:
2:0, 1:0, 3:0, 2:1, 3:1, 5:2, 2:0, 4:0

So not so bad .

Anyway, good luck for both teams.

Dude, it's few hours after the draw, how come you already know that "Generally people in Poland are not satisfied" ?? I am happy, my friends are happy, my family is happy, people that I met on my way home were hapy, some celebrations around my home, just some malcontents keep positing sh*t about less money from fans. Leave internet once for a while and watch real life.

sweden does stay in Kyiv. The areticle also mentions that French will be based in Ukraine, but I haveno heard first hand confirmation

Germany and England will stay in Poland.

Now, with Netherland it's kinda funny. I have a feeling three cities (Krakow, Gdansk and Kharkiv ) all believe that Dutch stay there. Anyone has a relyable info?

They have a deadline in a week. So we'll know very soon. Coaches of Germany, England and Sweden alredy confirmed their bases right after the draw (Krakow, Gdansk, Kyiv)

Poland and Ukraine we know. I guess, within couple of days we'll hear more.

For those who are planning to go I'd suggest buying air tickets right away. They are surprisingly cheap at the moment , won't stay that way for long.

Hotels are different issue.

I guess they are all block-booked and will become available later.
At the moment, 4000 Euro/night Intercontinental Kyiv, anyone?
On the other hand (at least in Ukraine) the best value for fans are apartments, not hotels. And those are actually availabe.

At least Krakow gets it's redemption for being left out.

I still don't get England, though. Any team of group B can well stay in Poland, even Holland. After all, if they qualify, the quater/semi finals will be in Gdansk/Warsaw. And all but Holland will play 2 games in Lviv, one in Kharkiv.

But England- that I simply don't get. They face a prospect of playing all their games between Kyiv and Donetsk (no one really believes they will advance all the way to final, and yet...).

Maybe they should just go for vacation to Krakow? ;)
In any case, that's a good news for anyone else in group D.

Recent experiences mean that any England team base becomes a strategic minefield. The 2006 World Cup in Germany provided the grande bouffe of Baden-Baden, with its peak-era Wag-culture excesses and daily whispers of papal-scale extravagance in the shopping malls. If Baden-Baden was too noisy, the gilded isolation of the South African hilltop camp in rural Rustenburg four years later was apparently too quiet: players complained of debilitating boredom levels in a regime that was described by Wayne Rooney as "breakfast, train, lunch, bed, dinner, bed".

With Krakow, the Football Association will hope to have reached a happy middle ground between no-frills Rustenburg and all-frills Baden-Baden. "I want to see them in training focused and working hard, but after always they will be free," Fabio Capello said yesterday. The suggestion from the England manager was that his players will be allowed to come and go outside of team duties during a campaign that could – depending on whether the team can improve on a miserable European Championship finals record – be as short as eight days or as long as 22.

What about France? Are they going to stay in Poland (in Warka I suppose), or will they accomodate in Ukraine?

I have mixed feelings about the draw. Poland has almost the easiest, possible group and it will be shame, if we won't promote to the next stage. On the other hand , that opponents don't excite me like France or Portugal even Sweden would, so I regret that we didn't get someone hot from 3 or 4 basket. Russia satisfies me, as we didn't compete for a long time, many people in Poland have their own 'subjective' opinion about Russia and that match will electrify whole nation. Also I'm jealous about that more BIG matches will be in Ukraine. You guys may be sad about your group, but you can't be if it's about the whole draw, which was better for Ukraine(as a country) for sure. As a matter of fact the group of death (B) will be held on the two smallest stadiums, which is not the best thing for entertainment.

One more thing, which I realized yeasterday. I know that Mr.Surkis is an influencial guy and organising Euro was Ukrainian initiative, but it's surely unfair for Poland that almost every crucial event is/was held in Ukraine: Euro logo revelation - Kiev; Final draw - Kiev, Final match - Kiev. What Poland get?
Qualification draw, Play-off draw and Opening game. True equality, as without Poland there would be even a quarter of Euro in Ukraine.

By the way about the Group of Death:

The fact that both Kharkiv and Lviv are so close to the border will make it easy for Poles and Russians to visit those matches, too. The size of the stadiums is unfortunately insufficient....

On the other hand most of the really high profile games games, except Germany-Holland will be played onb bigger areanas in Gdansk, Donetsk, Warsaw and Kyiv (Spain-Italy, England-France, and knok-out phase. )

I agree with the second part though, I don't understand why the official Euro 2012 theme song could not have been composed by both a Polish and a Ukrainian artist (the one presented yesterday was just HORRIBLE).

You mean that Oceana song? In this case uefa/fifa is quite straightforward and always let some 'star' composing the official song, instead of giving it to some local musician. Euro 2008 song was composed by Shaggy (and it was great imo) last WC - Shakira and so on.

I actually don't mind that. If UEFA's decision (to grant the cup to PL & UA) indeed had been influenced mainly by Mr Surkis, I wouldn't be surprised for the Ukraine to have more important events held there.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm delighted that the cup is giving great boost to develop Poland's sport & transport infrastructure (which will serve the Poles for a long time in future), will be beneficial from tourism perspective, and will certainly work towards the country's promotion.

Guys I really don't understand thinking in this way. Under E12 flag we are one team. There isn't "Ours" and "Theirs". Friday ceremony for me was polish ceremony as well as ukrainian. Where it took part is unimportant.
On the other hand try to compare level of this ceremonies:

Final draw (Kiev) vs Qualification draw (Warsaw)
Logo revelation (Kiev) vs Play-off draw (Krakow)

Ukrainians better understand what means "TV show". Final draw was much better than Quali. Camera work, interval acts, nice stage. Play-off in claustrofobic room in Krakow was much much worse than logo event in Kiev.
Even polish compere Piotr Sobczynski looks like father of beautiful Olena.
Polish TV (TVP) can't feel what mean TV entertainment acts.

POLSKA GOLA

Its a great draw for the police i think
England will not play in poland unless they reach semifinal which they wont do so the chance of english hordes upsetting polish hools will not happen.
And of course german will maybe not play games in poland so i wonder if something fishy going on? Maybe.
Anyway, polands group is the best posible i know we have a weak team but czechs and greece are also mediocre.
Russia will win group A with others fighting for 2nd place.
i hope russian hools will stay away from warsaw that match could be not so nice if these guys visit.
i think they will stay at home though..

But not so important where the teams will be based, it's important where the teams will play, where the fans will come on match of their teams ;)

Lmao. Yeah, good luck with those, maybe the Kaliningrad once wont be so harsh on you since you two are neighbors. On the other hand, I bet they are already pissed for not playing in Ukraine instead but that makes me happy. Keeps some of those uneducated trashy hools away from Ukraine!

I could hardly see any Polish accents on this ceremony, except Poland in promo video and maybe Polish co-host, so for me it wasn't Polish ceremony at all.

If you find it equal... Both Polish imo are much less prestigious (Who cared about play-off draw, except teams taking part in? Qualificiation draw was also nothing much)

I may be wrong, but I suppose those ceremonies was organised by uefa and Ukrainian TV or TVP had nothing to it. Besides Piotr Sobczynski, who you mentioned, managed really well and made a decent job, which was damn tough, when all eyes has been aimed at beautiful Ukrainian.

.

who cares about the draw in general. I have never cared about where any kind of sports draw was located - only the draw/selection. I have never heard anyone complain about this type of supposed problem.
