Is it true that, according to the article, water is provided for limited periods of time ? If yes - is this a common problem or just a local, temporary exception ?

sorry for OT
It depends of region and the city.
Lviv is a small city?

Lviv has no limits in cold water providing, but some parts of the city have scheduled hot water providing(e.g. no hot water from 24.00 to 6.00). Nevertheless there are boilers in many buildings so if you want you can have hot water round-the-clock.
Such situation is in some other small cities in the West region.

This problem is only in Lviv... but... no such problem in hotels.

Yeah, this article is totally unobjective. But can you provide us links to other opinions from Ukrainian's newspapers (it may be in russian or ukrainian language)? THX

If to take into account that two years ago there was only a half of the population of Ukraine who espoused the idea of Conduction of Europeen continental championship finals in Ukraine, so today there is already 89% of people who are friendly to this idea. This data was organised on order of Geramn organisation of international сollaboration GIZ and was presented by Company of marketing and social research GfkUkraine.

For example, whereas in 2007 84% of Swiss population estimated the conduct of the Euro-2008 positively, in 2008 the figure increased to 91%, Mathias Brandt says. On the eve of the World Championship 2006, 85% of Germans considered positively the tournament holding, which is by 4% lower than Ukrainian’s approval of the Euro-2012

By asking if Lviv is a small city i was answering the post above me which said that only small cities have problems with water. I know Lviv is not a small city, therefore the poster above me was wrong.

The problem isnt only in Lviv. The tourists comming to Lviv shouldnt have a problem with it, because as someone mentioned Hotels are good to go.

I doubt 46.65% of Ukrainians in Donetsk are illiterate, so what are they thinking? They just don't care? I would understand double language signage, but keeping Russian only is rather rude.

Russian speaking and ethnically Russian is not the same. Most people in Kyiv can switch between two languages affordlessly. .

In fact, this is one of those not-issues that are mostly exploited by politicians before elections.

They dont. Just like you dont know that those peope are actually ethnic Ukrainians. Irish people who speak English in Ireland are still Irish. And those russophone regions become more and more ukrainian-speaking with each year(unlike Ireland).

And... a lot of Americans, sometimes even Europeans dont even know that Ukraine(or Poland) even exists :)

They are not ethnic Ukrainians. Nearly 20 percent of your population is ethnic Russian.

"Russians in Ukraine form the largest ethnic minority in the country, and the community forms the largest single Russian diaspora in the world. In the 2001 Ukrainian census, 8,334,100 identified themselves as ethnic Russians (17.3% of the total population)"

And yes, you are partially correct as in addition to this 8 334 100 Ethnic Russians, there is a huge group of Russian-speaking Ukrainians. I understand that Western Ukraine (where you are from) is very nationalistic and anti-Russian as well as anti-Polish but the reality is that Ukraine is home to a huge non-Ukrainian population. The official census of 2001 also indicates that there are 150 000 Poles in present-day Ukraine while realistic figures are much higher than this.

It looks like Krakow will now need an upgrade to match other polish airports.

Very true, it is actually the only major airport in Poland that is not or has not built a new passenger terminal recently. Other investment projects were carried out such as a multistory parking facility or apron extension however, construction of a new passenger terminal, train station and a hotel will, or should start next year.

Annual capacity of the terminal will be 8 million pax.

Krakow airport is not bad, but agree- it needs upgrade, specially when you look at the pax numbers :

Is this the official opening ceremony? why so few people? is there any video?

As always it is a conclusion of many factors, including:
- frost, the lowest temperature this winter.
- program, there were only polish musicians. All of them play usually gigs in Warsaw. I'm sure concert wasn't main purpose to come here for people.
- media hype about unprepering of stadium to ceremony. Opening concert was confirmed only a few days before. To be honest, stadium is still in construction and majority of Poles know about it.

Next deadline is 11 February - SuperCup of Poland (match between champion of T-Mobile Ekstraklasa (Wisla Krakow) and winner od Polish Cup (Legia Warsaw)). But this is next event with "feet of clay" because field is said to be installed 10 February.

It was more like just another day when anyone could come and see the stadium. There were already two such days, if I'm not wrong. Everyone knew the opening ceremony would be rather symbolical with a shity concert so only people that haven't been at the stadium yet and were not afraid of cold came.

Warsaw stadium is really amazing. But there're 3 things that I don't like:

- fasade (at night it looks just spectacular, but during the day it's quite average, but ofc it's just my personal opinion)
- this "thing" where they put the roof while it's open
- and prolly the most annoying thing, is that you can't close the roof when there's under 0*C. and it's even more weird that they knew about it, before the construction even started...i just can't understand such decision.

But without any doubt, one of the best stadium in europe/world atm.

WRONG, you cannot operate the mechanism when it is under 0*Celsius....doesn't mean that the roof cannot be closed or opened....simply the temperature need only be considered at time of operating the opening or closing of the roof.

The rest is pretty good!Blame english, they wanted to stay in Kraków :) . But since two other countries already confirmed Kraków as their training bases (33k and 15k stadiums), english had to pick Hutnik's stadium (which is actually under thorough modernization since december 2011). Kraków isn't London where you have god knows how many stadiums.

Let me make a guess:

Now that Modlin-Warsaw Airport is almost ready to be inaugurated, now that companies confirm their interest in this platform, it might be time for a competent skyscrapercity user to opens a nice section devoted to this airport with plenty of information and pics in the
"World forums"
> "Infrastructure and Mobility"
> "Airports".

So all users could get acquainted with this new infrastructure.

If I was competent I would done it, but I don't understand polish what can be a serious handicap for research documentation.

Thanks to consider my request.

WARSAW — An overwhelming 13 of the 16 teams qualified for Euro 2012 have opted for base-camps in Poland, tournament organisers said Monday, leaving fellow-host Ukraine virtually out in the cold.

"It's a fact that 13 teams have chosen Poland as their base for the duration for the European Championships," Adam Olkowicz, boss of the country's organising committee, said at a ceremony after a deadline expired for picking training locations.

Despite the fact that eight teams will play their group-stage matches in each host country, only three will set up shop in Ukraine -- the Ukrainians themselves, plus France and Sweden.

In contrast, Germany have picked the northern Polish city of Gdansk as their base-camp, even though that means shuttling back and forth to the Ukrainian cities of Lviv and Kharkiv, which lie a respective 750 kilometres and 1,600 kilometres away.

Holland, who will play their games in the same locations, have meanwhile picked Krakow in southern Poland for their camp.

The choice of Krakow has been echoed by England, who will be playing in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, 870 kilometres away, and the eastern city of Donetsk, almost 1,600 kilometres from their camp.

The other teams playing in Ukraine but based in Poland are Denmark and Portugal.

Those both playing and staying in Poland are the Poles, plus Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Russia, and reining champions Spain.

Euro 2012 is the first-ever edition of the quadrennial championships behind the former Iron Curtain, in a region where infrastructure challenges outweigh anything in previous Western European host nations.

The issue of accommodation for teams, officials and fans alike has been a hot topic, with Ukraine in the spotlight due concerns over skyrocketing prices and a scarcity of rooms for supporters.

While scooping the lion's share of training camps is a clear thumbs up for Poland, organisers here have been anxious not to play up the subject at the expense of their Ukrainian neighbours.

"The issue was what are the best sites for the teams, the places their football associations were happy with," said Tomasz Szulc, head of the Polish organising committee's base-camp division.

"It didn't depend if these were in Poland or Ukraine. What mattered was providing the best conditions possible," he added.

European football's governing body UEFA has also sought to minimise the issue, previously underlining that while it presented a list of accredited potential base-camp locations in both countries, teams were free to go where they liked.

Euro 2012 kicks off on June 8 in Warsaw, and ends on July 1 with the final in Kiev.

I don't understand why there is no bus transfers to Lviv, given the location. When I was considering flying Ryan to/from Rzezhow the transportation was a major issue.

As to Wizz expansion in Ukraine- it's doubtful given their ongoing fight with Ryan for Hungarian market (Polish, too).

Ryan repeatedly denied any intension of entering Ukraine, but there are indeed all kind or rumors of them coming.

Allegedly, Ryan representatives came to Kyiv for some talks with the ministry of infrastructure. The minister afterwards was very positive about their possible etnrance, but Ryan denied any certainty (until they choose to officially announce it)

^^That's the point. This stadium is simply versatile. For football fans it's disadvantage, but generally it gives more possibilities how to use this stadium after EURO 2012. EURO it's just few games during one month, the stadium will exist for next tens of years. Kiev is a huge city, and such universality of the stadium is very practical.

I actually think that it's fine that Krakow isn't one of the host cities. It's about time that other cities in Poland (especially Wroclaw and Gdansk) got some love and as we can see Krakow might benefit from the Euro even more than some host cities. Three teams picking it as their home base certainly will give the city a considerable boost.

If someone can, please post the photos on here.

Absoutely it's a better outcome, because Krakow already had a stadium, this way, but having matches in Gdansk you get an extra stadium and a stack of extra infrastructure.

Eurolot in deal to buy Bombardier aircraft

The eight aircraft will cost a total of zł.400 million - report

On Monday, Poland's Treasury approved a request by the board of state-owned airliner Eurolot to purchase eight Bombardier Q-400 planes, reported Puls Biznesu. The cost of the transaction will be zł.400 million.

Five of the planes, each of which has room for 82 passengers, could join Eurolot’s fleet before the start of the Euro 2012 soccer championship.

State-controlled Lot Polish Airlines and the Treasury are shareholders in Eurolot.

Bombardier Q-400 airplanes are manufactured by Canadian aerospace company Bombardier.

http://www.wbj.pl/article-58245-eurolot-in-deal-to-buy-bombardier-aircraft.html?typ=wbj

It is still unclear whether Eurolot will purchase 8 or 14 Q 400s. Tomorrow a press conference will be held.

Soccer: Abramovich secures Poland-Russia presidential box for €1.2 mln

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich paid €1.2 million to secure the presidential box for the Poland-Russia match at the upcoming Euro 2012 soccer championships, reported Puls Biznesu, which cites unnamed sources.

This means that neither President Bronisław Komorowski nor Prime Minister Donald Tusk will occupy the box during the game, which takes place at Warsaw's National Stadium on June 12.

Mr Abramovich, who has an estimated fortune of $13.4 billion, was ranked 53rd in Forbes' 2011 list of the richest people in the world. He is the owner of the Chelsea soccer club.

Robert Korzeniowski, marketing advisor to UEFA and former race-walk champion, told Puls Biznesu that business packages for Euro 2012 games are proving popular.

“In Poland, over 400 customers have purchased ticket packages so far and that number is growing fast,” he said.

Mr Korzeniowski added that business packages are still available for each match.

The price paid by Mr Abramovich however is in no way indicative of the prices of most match-day VIP packages. The average price for one package is €1,700, with those for the final costing an average of around €6,900.

:bash:

Please stop this nonsense. Our past is difficult enough. We are creating something together, so for god sake, for just few moths forget about what divides us...
And wikipedia is not good source (in fact anyone can edit it), english edition is the best - still not perfect. Source of topic in ukrainian wikipedia is only one, very old ukrainian book. In polish wikipedia there is more but still - only polish sources. But hey - it really matters what happened 100 years ago?

Have to say I'm a bit jealous of the Swedish team playing in Ukraine.

The only hope for us would be, if Sweden won Group D and then won quarter-final in Kiev, they'd play semi-final in Warsaw... :)

England's Euro 2012 hideaway in Poland is suddenly a magnet for fans

• Organisers tell English, Dutch, Italian fans to go to Krakow
• Krakow to be Poland's 'fifth host city' with fan fest planned

Any hopes the Football Association had that England's players would enjoy a relatively peaceful stay in Krakow during Euro 2012 have been shattered by Polish competition organisers trumpeting it as the main destination for fans to stay.

England, Holland and Italy have chosen to base themselves in the picturesque Polish city, partly on the basis that no matches are being played there. But Wojciech Folejewski, the chief operating officer of the Poland 2012 organising committee, said that it would promote Krakow as the country's "fifth host city" and stage a fan fest for 30,000 people in a central park.

England's base of Hotel Stary was chosen to provide a middle ground between the tabloid frenzy of Baden-Baden in Germany in 2006 and the austerity of Fabio Capello's remote Rustenburg base in South Africa in 2010.

After the 2010 tournament there was an acknowledgement from FA executives that the England squad should be "good tourists" in Poland and the Ukraine, staying more centrally and engaging with fans and the host country. But Krakow was not expected to be chosen as a hub by the majority of England fans, given that no matches are taking place in the city.

However, Folejewski said that a major marketing campaign would try to convince English, Dutch and Italian fans to stay in the city and watch matches on big screens in a huge fan zone. "Krakow wanted to be a host city very much," said Folejewski, speaking at the Havas Global Sports Forum in Barcelona. "They were very sad the Uefa choice was different. But Krakow has a great chance because the English, Dutch and Italian teams will train there. For sure, many fans and especially journalists will come to Krakow.

"We try to call them the fifth host city. They are preparing a big fan zone ready for something like 30,000 people, with great tourist and cultural programmes. Don't worry about accommodation in Krakow because it's prepared very well, and bars and so on."

The Polish organisers have developed a website to offer English fans a personalised itinerary for their stay, including accommodation, cultural activities and entertainment – all within Poland.

"I might have to be diplomatic with my words because of our partners in Ukraine, but I would always say to England fans: do come to Poland," he said.

Folejewski said it was natural that businesses in Kiev would want to capitalise on the tournament. "Of course they are enthusiastic because it's great business and it's a great chance to promote. Everybody will decide whether to look at the matches on the screens or go to Ukraine. It's a private decision."

Folejewski conceded that the logistics of England fans finding accommodation in Ukraine could be an issue, and on Thursday David Taylor, the chief executive of Uefa's events arm, conceded that people were being overcharged by hotels demanding three times their normal rates. There are also concerns about the ease with which English fans staying in Poland will be able to reach Ukraine.

They will face journeys of 930 miles to Donetsk, where England play France and the Ukraine, and 540 miles to Kiev, where they take on Sweden. "There are connections with planes, trains and roads," Folejewski said. "It is not the same high quality as western countries so most of them will use the planes."

Meanwhile, the England and Tottenham Hotspur centre-half Michael Dawson has been ruled out for the rest of the season, and effectively the European Championship, after suffering ruptured ankle ligaments. Dawson, capped four times, landed awkwardly after leaping with Chris Beardsley in Spurs' FA Cup win over Stevenage on Wednesday night.

Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, admitted afterwards that it would be "a miracle" if the defender returned before the end of the domestic campaign and his assessment has proved accurate, with scans suggesting the 28-year-old will be out for 10 to 12 weeks.

Poland, Ukraine ready for Euro 2012 - Tusk and Azarov

http://www.warsawvoice.pl/WVpage/images/news/20287_big.jpg

Poland and Ukraine have completed all of their work to host the Euro 2012 European Football Championship and both countries are finally ready to co-host the event, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Mykola Azarov in Warsaw on Thursday.

Tusk and Azarov earlier attended the meeting of a Polish-Ukrainian committee on preparations for the tournament, which will be held in both countries from June 8 to July 1.

"The exceptional determination of the two countries, the Ukrainian and Polish governments, the sporting and business sectors, the financial effort - all that has led to this moment and we're ready to host Euro 2012," Tusk said.

Tusk said that the two countries have responsibly fulfilled their duties although not all the ambitious plans have been realized as planned, especially the ones dealing the development of infrastructure, “but this should not have effect on the course of the championship."

Azarov said that despite all of the difficulties linked to the financial and economic crisis, Ukraine and Poland had managed to mobilize all of their potential and had prepared well for the championship.

While only 77 days remain for the beginning of the Euro 2012, the two countries are behind in the construction of roads and freeways, and the modernization of railways.

Yeah right....

Budomierz - one of the largest border crossings will not be used for Euro 2012. Poland spent 50 million dollars building these state of the art facilities (which Ukrainians are allowed to use for their border inspection as well since they didn't build any on their side) but Ukrainians failed to complete few kilometers of roads connecting their road network to the border. Worse yet they have not even started.

They know it’s co build by EU funds as everything else in Poland so they are playing a game called "pay me to or else" :)
By the way only 60% of the pre planed infrastructural investments has been realized in Poland and none of the planned highways will be operational between the Euro 2012 whatever they claim on TV so Poland it’s not perfect either
However let hope for a great EURO 2012 for both Poland and Ukraine and may both of the countries prosper specially after all of the international media coverage during the Euro
