Yaounde (approx. 1.4 million inhabitants)

Yaoundé, (IPA: [ja.un.deɪ]), is the capital city of Cameroon and second largest city in the country after Douala. It lies in the centre of the nation at about 750 metres above sea level.

Economy

Major industries in Yaounde include cigarettes, dairy products, breweries, clay, glass goods, and lumber. Yaoundé is a regional distribution center for coffee, cacao, copra, sugar cane, and rubber.

Major Features and Attractions

The city centre houses government offices, some large (and expensive) hotels, and the central market. The exclusive Bastos neighbourhood is home to foreign embassies, a large expatriate European community and luxury houses belonging to wealthy Cameroonians. The presidential palace and compound is in the Etoudi neighborhood.

Also found in Yaounde are the Cameroon Art Museum (located in a former Benedictine monastery), the Cameroon National Museum (located in the former presidential palace), and the Afhemi Museum. There is a small zoo in the Mvog-Betsi neighbourhood.

Yaounde has an assortment of nightclubs and restaurants. The city also boasts some unusual and surprisingly modern architecture, particularly with regards to many of the government ministries.

Wow that means Cameroon has two major cities. The cost must be high to maintain two major cities at the same time. Which is the main gateway to Cameroon-- Younde or Douala ? Anyway, nice pics ! The hills surrounding Younde are very spectacular !

And being a nature lover, i would say those hills looks very beautiful.

@skyprince...the quote in the first post makes it clear that Yaounde is the second largest city after Douala...and hence in my opinion Douala should be the gateway to Cameroon.

This building is named the Immeuble Ministriet No. 1. This 18-story government highrise has sat topped out but unfinished for many years. What can be done to this increasingly decrepit building? If I had a plan for it, I'd implode this building.

WOW ..Yaounde look like a very disorganized city. I thought that being in the west, and being a fairly prosperous country..I Expected more. ....I know Accra looks a lot better.....as a matter of fact...so do many other capitals in the West....

Thanks for the pics, Matt. I especially enjoyed the pano images. I must agree with "Boris89" though, it seems like both major Cameroonian cities (Douala) are in a similar position and even quite similar fashioned. However, Yaounde city center seems interestingly unique with it's brownish architecture.

I will seriously like you guys to stop posting pictures o Cameroon. I am cameroonian and I hate seeing my country's conditions meanwhile other aricans cities are going up but we are just going down, down, down. I sometimes am ashamed to say I am cameroonian. The whole country looks like one big village. All the goverment does is eat maney instead o investing in our cities. I Ahidjo was still in power, Cameroon would have been veryu much advanced today. Douala and Yaounde are the worst cities in Africa. What a shame

Thanks and I also wanna that most cameroonians don't go to germany. Most cameroonians either go to France or the US or Uk. There are very few cameroonians in germany. It is the Namibians who go to Germany. I mentioned this because you wrongly mentioned something about us mostly going to germany.

If yes, there are no large Namibian communities in Germany, there once were "larger" communities but most have returned to Namibia... I have never met any Namibian in my whole life!!! Maybe in other regions than where I live but I have talked to quite a few Cameroonians here (friendly people!!) ...although their community is smaller than in France (a country that I knwo well) or maybe USA (which I cannot tell), you are right.

But where is the problem with it? Nigerian community in UK and US is also bigger than in Germany. Some friend sof mine have lfet Germany to settle in the UK for this particular reason.

yes I was talking to you and by no means was I being insulting or rude. There are very few cameroonians in Germany. Many of us are in the US, France and U.K. I you eel I was rude I apologize but please no cameroonian in the diaspora would wanna see any of those pics. Except there is development going on. sfb, great pictures but it would seriously help if the peole in yaounde can at least sweep their streets and sweep the dust on the roads...The roads look so brown...and are those transportation buses??? (the blue buses)...i tried telling smeone to stop posting pictures of Yaounde and douaLA because they kept posting the worst places of these two cities...so how is the construction project going for yaounde, i dont see any projects

I can tell you that yaoundé is more cleaner than few years ago.

The executive mayor does many many efforts to make yaoundé good looking
and i think he has successful
of course you can't see that in my pictures
Road Cleaning Company work until 1.00 or 2.00 am
there are many public park in the city spécially in town centre.
he also created new cars park in town centre (paying cars park of course)

he removed many scalpers who were based on the edge of roads.

I think if he stays along at his post, he'll do a great job
Even though yaoundé is not about to look like in short term to ABUJA or Morocco, but it's better.

That place looks a hot mess, and it looks as if they aren't doing anything to upgrade it. I see no cranes, road construction or anything going on like in the other west and central African cities. This is truly disappointing, especially since Cameroon is an oil nation; I wonder what the heck in going on with their government.

In Detroit and also Buffalo, many people were leaving the region, so many structures have been abandoned. Many years after they have been abandoned they started to become an eyesore to many people, so the local government started demolishing the structures for revitalization. That's why if you go to most residential communities in Detroit 1/3 of all lots will be empty.

The city is not extremely in bad shape, but they should fill one of the large empty lots ACROSS from that large roundabout in the center of the city with something. At least something should be there like a low-rise government building, a park, just anything. It kinda reminds me of Detroit where they had to demolish entire buildings to accommodate the decreasing population and empty spaces were left behind.

i was making pictures discreetly except in public park. you can take pictures freely.

but people change, they don't pay attention about that anymore.
many people have digital camera or camera cellphones, so it became normal to a this kind of devices.

Les travaux de parachèvement de l'immeuble ministériel N°1 débutent en juin prochain.

Placé sous l'autorité du Premier ministre, Philémon Yang, le comité de pilotage de parachèvement de l'immeuble ministériel N°1, rebaptisé immeuble de la mort, a rendu son verdict hier dans la salle des conférences du ministère des Finances. Selon le communiqué lu sur les ondes de la Crtv-radio, l'offre de la Caisse nationale de prévoyance sociale (Cnps) a été reçue favorablement par le gouvernement. La Cnps dispose ainsi de 24 mois pour réhabiliter cet édifice public pour une enveloppe d'un peu plus de 16 milliards Fcfa, comme nous l'indiquions déjà dans notre édition du 16 Avril 2010.

Sauf que, contrairement à l'annonce du ministère du Développement urbain et de l'Habitat, qui fixait le début des travaux en septembre, le démarrage du chantier est plutôt prévu au mois de juin prochain. La Cnps se chargera d'achever la construction de ce complexe immobilier et de jouir d'une partie, les trois tours annexes, pour ses services en cession perpétuelle. C'est en 1984 que débutent les travaux de construction de l'immeuble ministériel N°1 au même moment que ceux de l'immeuble ministériel N°2 qui abrite aujourd'hui le ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur et celui des Domaines et des Affaires foncières, avant d'être brutalement interrompu en 1987.

Convoitises

Un ex fonctionnaire du ministère de l'Equipement- l'ex pendant des Travaux publics- indique que les deux chantiers s'inscrivaient dans le cadre de l'équipement de l'Etat en services administratifs. Au moment de l'arrêt de ce chantier situé au cœur de la capitale, les travaux étaient réalisés à 85%. Bâti sur une superficie de 30.000m2, l'immeuble ministériel N°1 était prévu pour abriter plus de 1000 bureaux administratifs en quatre blocs: une tour de 18 étages, trois immeubles de trois, cinq et sept niveaux. Le 10 avril 2005, le Premier ministre d'alors Ephraïm Inoni, créée le comité de pilotage de parachèvement de l'immeuble ministériel N°1. Ce comité était chargé de la réfection des cages d'ascenseurs et d'escaliers, des parvis, bureaux et parkings, climatisation, carreaux, sanitaires, marbres, électrification, étanchéité, poutres, fenêtres, etc.

Sa composition avait été constatée par une décision du Minduh signée le 1er octobre 2008. L'action du comité de pilotage se réduira malheureusement à la seule construction de la clôture autour de l'édifice. Une source proche du comité de pilotage faisait observer que "l'éclatement des ministères en charge du dossier et les changements successifs à la tête de ces différents départements ministériels ne favorisent pas l'achèvement de l'immeuble. De plus certains ingénieurs de suivi et concepteurs de l'immeuble ne sont plus en vie". La même source indiquait à Mutations que les appétits des différents départements ministériels associés à ce projet n'étaient pas de nature à faciliter l'avancement des travaux. Le chantier étant finalement devenu un gouffre à sous, malgré les convoitises des investisseurs espagnols, marocains et américains, notamment de Transnational Parker industries.

This building is named the Immeuble Ministriet No. 1. This 18-story government highrise has sat topped out but unfinished for many years. What can be done to this increasingly decrepit building? If I had a plan for it, I'd implode this building.
It's actually called "building of death" lol that's because it's the refuge of gangsters, drug dealers, you name it.. it will be rehabilitated next year, $60m have been allocated for it...

Its a shame there arent pictures of residential areas of yaounde in this forum, there's a place there called "golf" pheeew 3 storeys home with private lift covered with $400/m2 marble..

It' s the building of the owner of the Djeuga Palace hotel, mr Feutheu. It ' s composed by offices and appartments. It's just behind the boulevard du 20 mai ...
Personnaly i don' t like it very much because it look' s like an old fashioned building.

C' est l' Hotel de ville!
La pelouse au 1er plan a été détruite, remplacéee pas d' horribles pavés, à l' occasion du cinquantenaire de l' indépendance.
En face, des boutiques ridicules ont été construites. Je me demande parfois ce qui se passe dans la tète du délégué du gouvernement (super mayor ) , mr Tsimi Evouna et les autre dirigeants du pays.
