Caw, you have excelled yourself once more with your awesome photography.
Buildings aren't always the most photogenic subjects but you somehow manage to overcome this.
I think you should enter the #3 shot, the one with the wheel, urbis, royal exchange spire and beetham. It's brilliant.

I've just blessed this Almighty Building with its own Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beetham_Tower%2C_Manchester). Uber-thanks to David Jones for uploading a photo for the entry.

That would be me then.. :)

Would be good if more skyscraper information was put onto Wikipedia, for the world to know. And photos..

KITR - I dont think Aidan allows external linking of his images any more. Sneaky but understandable. Here's an extract from his blog about his taking of those pictures.

Photo walk up the Beetham Hilton Tower - Recovering after London trip

23rd January

Today's photo walk was an ascent of the Beetham Hilton Tower. I was invited to take more photos, this time from the very top of the building. The gigantic crane fixed to the south face of the tower is being jacked up even higher to allow the final rooftop sections to be installed. I hope to return tomorrow to take more photos.

My visit to the top of the tower was breathtaking - in every sense of the word, as we had to walk up the final 22 flights of steps. The exterior service lift currently only goes as far as the 35th floor.

I stood on the very topmost section. The views are stupendous, and it would be great to live up here, but I have already experienced high level living. During 1985 I was a resident at 1904 Thorn Court in Pendlebury, Salford, the red brick council-owned block at the end of Cross Lane, next to the Flemish Weaver pub.

In Abu Dhabi, from 1993 to 1996, I lived on the very top floor of the 'new' Airport Road building, the one next to the Adnoc petrol station. The view was great but then, as now, I'd prefer a view over Manchester.

The rest of the day was spent recovering after the London trip, and two very late nights.

Weather on the top of the Beetham Tower: probably around freezing due to altitude and wind chill. Misty with hazy sunshine.

Look how small the GN tower looks from that viewpoint. (Incidentally both towers looked incredible as seen from Albert Square today). Also look how small the tram is, if you can spot it.

No, I think you are right - it's the blade being fitted to the top. I'm pretty sure the penthouse is part of the main structure.

edit- on second thoughts, it could be the penthouse. in that case, this tower is still not at its tallest!

I got told this story today, you know when the cladding stopped for a few weeks before Christmas, well apprently a crane was lifting some up,and it snapped dropping 2 panes on the site below, so work had to stop.

I thought there was another 2 floors to go,cos the core is higher than the finished floors, im not complaining it looks stunning now :)

rolybling
January 26th, 2006, 12:01 AM
nah, the BLADE starts from the second floor from the top and will rise quite a bit above the top of that concrete we can see,

that bit sticking out at the top, the concrete bit, will be surrounded in glass, ..I'm sure what your on about is just the framework for the glass to be added, it looks fixed to me and the blade is on the south side..I may be wrong of course

kebabmonster

Eastgate and Crown, which will be about 300metres away from each other at a rough guess, are about a mile away from Beetham, tops.

Salford's border with Manchester isn't far from Beetham, but as for an accurate distance, it depends on where you want to reference Salford as.

Manchester Planner

Salford's border is exactly half a mile from Beetham.

Albany Tower is 2/3 of a mile from Beetham and Eastgate is a mile away.

You can walk opposite the Beetham tower down Liverpool st do a left and your on Regent rd Salford, do a right and you will come to trinity way in Salford, both a 10 minute walk from Beetham approx 1/2 mile, as for eastgate and albany id say about the same sort of distance to albany add another 200m for eastgate. Why do you ask by the way??

I really can't tell if these are permanent or not. They look like they've been used before, but today when I went past the steel frame had advanced further and seemed to be partly supported by these struts.

They are definately temporary props. Either supporting formwork for a concrete slab or they are there to support steel work during erection all very intriging.

Beetham best tower by far! Manchester looks fantastic and improving very quickly. The industrial heritage and the new architecture blend very well!

Was that the one taken from Chandos Hall (Student accom). It's an excellent shot. Whoever took it should take the same shot once the tower is fully glazed and includes the the glazed blade. Victorian/Edwardian Manchester with the 21st century tower looming in the distance does it for me.

The two other great shots are Albert Square with Beetham and GN (plus Raddison and soon to be joined by 17 Windmill Street) looming over the square and the one in the Castlefield basin with Beetham reflected in the water.

Hi Manc guys. I went up to Manchester for the first time a couple of weeks back.

Anyway, you couldn't miss this tower, it is absolutely gigantic and looks spectacular in the sunlight. I was very impressed.

Also, it looks, far, far better than the Beetham Tower in Brum as I drove past that on the M40 motorway and had a good glimpse of that one too.

Manchester is on course to have a very very impressive skyline by 2010.

If we look at developments in Manchester from a conservative viewpoint these towers should be all complete/renovated by the end of the decade:

1. Inacity Tower (616 ft)
2. Beetham Tower (515 ft)
3. Crown Tower (@48 stories - 470 ft)
4. CIS Tower (387 ft)
5. City Tower (351 ft)

I imagine that that alone would lend Manchester the position of having one of the top modern skylines in Europe.

What do other people on this forum think will get built in Manc by the end of the noughties?

Agreed JRB, the positioning and style of Beetham is something else. Someone there did not olnly do his homework but had a vision, a plan and maybe good fortune to realise this one. English Heritage take note, designers and forward thinkers of today are also worthy and deserve opportunity. Let's hope the visions of 5 yrs after Beetham are given their chance!

You're right JRB, as you get past Old Trafford/Sir Matt Busby Way it totally dominates everything in sight, it does look very very large from there, only really noticed it myself the other week from there when I drove out of PC World and down Chester Rd, I couldn't believe how massive it looked.

City tower hit by 'base-jump' prank
John Scheerhout

DROP: Beetham Tower.
DROP: Beetham Tower.
FOUR daredevils risked their lives to parachute off Manchester's tallest building almost unnoticed.

They bypassed security to reach the top of the 47-storey, 561ft Beetham Tower being built in the city.

They jumped off the top, opened their parachutes and landed safely on Gartside Street, well away from the foot of the building, at 1am.

One amazed passer-by who saw the stunt reported it to police.

It is thought to be the first time so-called "base jumpers" - adrenaline junkies who leap from buildings, cliffs and other objects instead of from planes - have struck in Manchester.

Canopies

They use small, special canopies and don't carry a back-up parachute as there is not enough time to deploy one in the event of a main chute failure.

Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers are looking into this. It looks like four people have parachuted down the side of the building."

The activity is not illegal, although some base jumpers have been prosecuted for criminal damage or trespass.

Last week, two men jumped from the roof of a 28-storey Hilton hotel in London's Park Lane.

Neither the owners of the £150m building, nor Carillion, who are building it, would comment on the stunt.

Re Northbeach. In Osaka I taught English for a couple of years.

I left a year ago. Sob. I just haven't changed my profile as I've just come back from travelling. I also worked in Tokyo for a bit :)

I'd recommend visiting Japan to anyone on this forum. I will do some massive 'best of' Japan photo postings in the next few weeks.

Interestingly, Osaka was once known as 'Manchester of the East' as its where the formidable Sumitomo keiretsu was founded and where the country first industrialised.

Back on topic...

With the Beetham Tower it has such a slim profile it makes it really soar. For example... the Roppongi Hills Tower in Tokyo is tall (around 800feet) but doesn't soar because aesthetically it resembles a sumo wrestler. However, a tower like Centrepoint looks very tall from the side as its so slim. Beetham is definitely in the Centrepoint mould!

I only looked at Beetham from the ASDA car park near Moss Side but it really looked like a gem. The glass look top quality... far better than the rubbish in the Bank Street Canary Wharf towers. The quality of construction appeared more on a par with Plantation Place (in the City) and Swiss Re.

Beetham is a tower that Manchester can be rightfully proud of. I think in many ways it symbolises the change that has occurred between the IRA 1996 bomb (the catalyst) and the Commonwealth Games.

Hey Dom, I went to the Roppongi District last year. I was quite interested, cause the developers that did that, had PP for the suface car park between Whitworth St West, Canal St and Sackville St, next to New Samsi, for a 27 storey tower.

I liked what they had done in Tokyo. High quality. Loved the public art and spaces too and there was an awesome looking Louis Vuitton shop that looked as though it was crafted from diamonds!

Not heard a thing about that project since, but the way Picc Place is going who knows. It would be nice to have that, Beetham, Albany and Eastgate, all in a (squigely) line!

My local Asda that - almost every nationality under one slapped arse roof. What brought you up to Manc for a trip?

Gshutty - the developers must be Conran & partners? I think the tower may have been knocked on the head given the surrounds (I had the tower as further up Canal Street mind).

I like the way the sunlight catches the fins while the facade of the tower is shaded apart from the top. I was worried about those fins looking tacky but this is another feature of the tower which has surprised me ...I love it,I love it,I love it, I love it.......right calm down Ian!

Starting to take on a "finished" as the cladding reaches further up the tower and those fins look great reflecting the sun, a nice detail. Looking forward to seeing the fin go up as it looks a bit stumpy at the moment due to the overhang, the fin should balance it out nicely.

Impressed with the way this one is turning out, more so than the Birmingham tower.

Looks like there'll be 2 hinged arms, one on t'other side, that'll stretch up to 171m. I'd imagine the blade will end up being a fat double glazed effort, as if the cladding on the south side were to just continue above the roof. If you get me.

dgnr8
February 13th, 2006, 12:46 PM
I thought that, but if you look at the first pic, where the arm's placed, there's a concrete base for it that stretchs the height of the penthouse (or plant floor, whatever). There's one for where the other arm should go too. I think these are the supports for the blade.

Can't see it being for window cleaning with a boom that length.

Talking about cleaning the windows on this sucker, I wonder if Simpson figured out how the cleaners platform will be able to negotiate round the jut (or off-set) when the platform descends down to the hotel windows below the skybar?

I can envision a system of pulleys to keep it hugging the building, but is it possible our Ian could have forgotten about this minor detail?...

Nah, I don't think so, that's why he's paid the big bucks..... :)

I love the transparency of Simpson's trademark lines on the back cladding above the skybar. Works beautifully from a distance. The little white lines at the bottom of the panes works awesomely, leaving the main space clear but giving that lovely liney thingybob that goes on all around the tower. This really is sex. I only wish the cooling vents on the podium could've been concealed on top instead of where they are. If the glass was put in as like the other 2 or 3 levels, it'd be bob on.

February 14th, 2006, 12:22 AM
The colour and cladding just really reminds me of the Eureka building in Oz (too inebriated to remember where exactly, Melbourne?). Although obviously nothing like eachother, I love how the colourful cladding just sets it apart and allows you to watch it blend into the sky. You have to be a wee drunken tramp living inside my head to really understand where I'm coming from, but this tower is just going to be beautiful for Manc. It'll look moody in grey skies yet super mega funky happy in clear blue or cloud laden sky.

Where those dark panels are on the front though. I reckon that'll be signage, if not ventilation, but I think they should construct some massive blue glass tits to set her off.

Still think it is mounted too close to the edge for a window cleaners crane, first saw it from Robinsons Timber just off Eccles New Road which is almost side on to Beetham and it looked to be right on the edge. I don't think you can clean windows from a cradle suspended from a single cable, as a simple gust of wind could send you spinning out of control against the glass side of the building.
As an aside I would like to thank all the people who bought wireless routers from PC world and just plugged them in, from taking the pictures to having them on SSC took no more than 20 minutes. When the words Belkin 54G flash up on the PowerBook you know you have bandwidth.

Its design may not be unusual but that doesn't mean its not breathtaking to look at. Also the overhang is a nice, interesting feature which I don't think is appreciated enough.
