i_am_hydrogen May 2nd, 2007, 04:44 PM I keep forgetting about this one. I know it's been under construction, but for some reason it always slips to the back of my mind. Anyway, thanks for opening a thread on it, Retro, and great photos of the site--nice perspective.

FastFerrari May 5th, 2007, 11:37 PM whoa this is indeed a change of pace for Chi-Town.....seems like one of those old school 1920's buildings where u would see gangster get shot up by a butt load of tommy rounds...lol....however this nice...kinda thin but tall, and anything against the grain is alright with me.

cbotnyse June 14th, 2007, 11:05 PM This is also a great addition to Chicago. And a realy great palce to live. Perfect location and anemities.
Boogie June 15th, 2007, 01:00 AM it is elegant, but it looks old very European style.
we will see how it's going to be.
European style? Rather American style from 20.-30. years last century. Russians copied Your (I mean Amercians) architecture from 20.-30. years, but they did it in 50. years last century. For example Warsaw's Palace of Culture and Science or Moscow's Lomonosow University, both from 50. years last century are copies Your architecture.

Well tennis dude from houston...you know the old saying...opinions are like a-hole's everyone has one. This building is beautifully designed. It's a throwback to a different more elegant time. It adds a wonderful dimension to an increasing modern skyline.
Nout July 31st, 2007, 04:44 PM I like this one. Shape is matching with height, good for Chicago!

What?
Pronaos August 1st, 2007, 09:28 PM I'm a fan of this building. Classical architecture is both beautiful and takes skill to master. Anyone can design a modern "blob" building, but it takes traditional thinking to create something Classical.
Rizzato August 1st, 2007, 11:22 PM everyone likes throwback sports jerseys... why not throwback scrapers?
PresidentBjork August 3rd, 2007, 12:30 AM Come on, this building is NOT classical. So what, it's got a mansard roof and some fancy cornices, look at the top half! - there's as much glass there as on any 'modern building.' This just looks like another condo building with loads of balconies. Still.... could be worse.
SeViNiYo August 3rd, 2007, 01:04 AM nice building

For all you lovers out there, don't get your hopes up; Lucien Lagrange's postmodern buildings are hollow imitations of their inspirations. The materials always look cheap and the windows and balconies never fit quite right with the era they're meant to evoke. I have nothing against a meticulously detailed throwback, but this won't be it. Instead, think a McMansion in the sky. And if I'm proven wrong, so much the better.
As a side note, this is not a Chicago School building in any way, except for maybe height.
onZikisAyas August 5th, 2007, 07:35 AM amazing tower. I thought these designs were obselete :D

erbse September 2nd, 2007, 12:27 AM Fantastic tower! It's sleek and slim, kinda modern and retro at the same time. That's how a good classical highrise/scraper should look like. I wish they'd build somethin like this up here in Germany :|

Less-hideous balconies? I'm all for it.
Beautiful or not, a building like this has excellent sense of scale, especially at street level. I abhor sculptural buildings surrounded by bleak plazas that have no respect for street life.

Chicago Chef Charlie Trotter to Open New Restaurant
By ASHLEY M. HEHER
AP Business Writer
Published November 29, 2006, 11:55 AM CST
CHICAGO -- Charlie Trotter, an iconic chef whose name is synonymous with Chicago's gourmet cuisine, wants to dish out a second helping of his five-star meals.
Trotter, a Chicago native whose self-titled restaurant draws gourmands and members of the expense-account set, announced Wednesday he plans to open a second Chicago eatery in a new 60-story luxury hotel and condominium project.
"We're excited to deliver not just a stamped-out, high-end experience, but something that is really personal and something that has a genuineness about it," Trotter said in an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press. "I can't wait."
Trotter, the author of a dozen books and host a PBS cooking show, has been a fixture in Chicago's culinary world for nearly two decades. While his dishes are known for their use of vegetables, Asian influences and French techniques, Trotter is infamous for his food-as-art presentation and serious philosophy on cuisine. (An introduction to one book quotes Goethe and Dostoyevsky.)

Actually, the "stone" is precast concrete panelling - not going to age/weather as real limestone would.

ISTARI April 23rd, 2008, 10:32 PM Didn't like the render very much, but on seeing it in the flesh as it were and in the context of its surrounding ie the history of Chicago and the birth of the skyscraper, I am coming round to this very much. The cladding actually looks really good and I think will probably look like its been there since the 1930's when finished. A good thing when well executed which this appears to be.
Dallasbrink April 23rd, 2008, 10:41 PM 2nd favorite in Chicago after Trump
Woodstock88 April 24th, 2008, 06:49 PM Finally I found that Chicago is build 1930's style building!~!This might look very cool when it will be finished. It looks that 30s building comeing back to fashion.Toronto have build 1 tower and other is u/c and ny have build one too and now Chicago.
erbse April 27th, 2008, 02:20 PM There should be way more skyscraper developments looking like this, amending all the beautiful classic towers.
Just some data regarding the apartments, taken from the homepage (http://www.elysianhotels.com):
Residences
- 51 private residences
- at most two homes per floor
- homes range from 3,400 to 6,400 sq feet
- world-class staff ready to assist residents in any possible way
> Upper-floor private residences start at $3.0 million; guest suites start at $600,000
I think I'll move from Neubrandenburg to Chicago ;)

storms991 May 19th, 2008, 03:17 AM There should be way more skyscraper developments looking like this, amending all the beautiful classic towers.
I think I'll move from Neubrandenburg to Chicago ;)
Your so right, they should make it a priority to build such towers in all cities.
Excellent updates, its great seeing this one rise.

spyguy June 6th, 2008, 02:03 AM for which tower is the construction site just in front of the Elysian?
There's the Elysian. Then to the south is Ten East Delaware. Across the street, next to the cathedral, is Walton on the Park, where one of the two towers is under construction.
ZZ-II June 6th, 2008, 04:51 PM thx, seems a lots of construction activity is going on there

EszettRocks June 21st, 2008, 12:08 AM The render looked so good but the newest facade pictures are disappointing. There's something McMansion in them. And the side building is way too low, it gives an absurd feeling.

Dimension August 21st, 2008, 07:37 PM I have been waiting to see a tower like this forever.

Kevlargeist August 21st, 2008, 08:05 PM The lower part of the building looks ridiculous. Why so low, tiny and puny? The ensemble is crooked. The lower part looks a bit out of place.
chjbolton August 21st, 2008, 08:14 PM Tacky. Not even worth Las Vegas. Dubai maybe?

Marco Polo August 22nd, 2008, 06:39 AM It has this rich-cheap look I am afraid....

isaidso August 22nd, 2008, 06:51 AM Reproductions are a tricky style to pull off right. I've seen Chicago do a great job of it with a town house development I saw. This one, I'm not sure. I'll wait till it's done. Much will depend on the finishes. It could look great, or it could end up just a tacky reproduction.
Toronto had great success with the recently built 1 St. Thomas. It's gorgeous. Another called the Uptown, may not be as successful. The Elysian is a nice departure from the sterility of many glass condos being built, but this might miss the mark. Best to wait and see.
finn August 22nd, 2008, 11:44 AM Why are architects still designing post-modernist buildings? It looks so late 80's (and cheaply built at that). But thank you EndlessWaltz for the photo updates!

Liwwadden October 29th, 2008, 04:29 PM I really like the classical design! To bad you don't see much of these kind of skyscrapers being build lately (That's why I'm not a fan of Dubai :D). Great addition to the Chicago skyline.
phillybud October 31st, 2008, 08:45 AM I usually don't like historicism in skyscrapers, but this one I love. We have one here in Philly called the Symphony House that is cheap and ugly looking by comparison. I usually prefer sleek soaring highrises, but certain buildings are elegant if the traditional elements are done well. The Woolworth Building in NYC is another example.

Actually it's not an example... 100+ years ago the Woolworth was architecturally fit for that era. This building, however isn't. But I actually like it. And it ages more "gracefully" than glass towers...
vancouverite/to'er November 1st, 2008, 04:03 AM It's excellent to see this beauty rise especially considering how much this part of the city lacks pre-1950 skyscrapers and is mostly modernism, comparatively to across the river where 1920's-40's dominates. Good to see balance added.
Beware November 1st, 2008, 04:37 AM :) It's a, new, classic!

I don't mean to nitpick or seem too academic, but the Woolworth Bldg. will be 95 years old next year; even when it was built it was considered "historicist" ... compare it with two earlier "skyscrapers" :
the Home Insurance Building in Chicago (1885) or Sullivan's famous Wainwright Building in St. Louis (1891) which even today look more modern than the neo-Gothic ornate Woolworth.
Not that I have anything against historical revival buildings. They add architectural interest to the streetscape and can even serve has a history lesson for future generations.
SebaFun November 2nd, 2008, 05:24 AM Beautiful skyline and beautiful buildings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
gusgazman November 6th, 2008, 03:58 AM A french chateau 80 stories high? What would french architects think about this monstruous interpretation of their beautiful architecture...???
This is an enormous example of bad taste!!!

This is an enormous example of bad taste!!!
so is your avatar. who cares what the French think.
gusgazman November 6th, 2008, 04:40 AM So is yours... You better go to Paris to see what Architecture means... Remember that your so called culture comes from Europe...
Arist November 6th, 2008, 04:46 AM ill go to Chicago or New york if i want to study Architecture. How does Americas Culture come from Europe? Answer that.
Cardpooch November 6th, 2008, 04:48 AM Ummmm....Isn't the architect of this building from France?
Arist November 6th, 2008, 04:49 AM Ummmm....Isn't the architect of this building from France?
its inspired by french architecture. But the french are afraid to go this tall.
gusgazman November 6th, 2008, 05:04 AM Arist,
If you don't know how Europeans colonized your country go back to the School...
If you want to see tall buildings, go to Dubai... You have daily flights from Chicago to Dubai by Emirates...
Arist November 6th, 2008, 05:08 AM If you don't know how Europeans colonized your country go back to the School...
So, since Europe colonized America, we have to take all architectural queues from you and cant come up with our own? The middle east colonized europe, why dont your countries take queues from them?
If you want to see tall buildings, go to Dubai... You have daily flights from Chicago to Dubai by Emirates...
Why go to Dubai when chicago, New York, LA, Miami, Dallas, San Francisco, etc etc have tall building here in the States?
your bunk.
gusgazman November 6th, 2008, 05:25 AM Don't get mad!
I just remembered you where your culture started... It is a fact, OR NOT?
If not, check the major part of the last names you can find in the telephone book of any city on the US...
I am just telling that The Elysian is a FREAK, a bad interpretation of classic architecture, that many good american architects have never imaginated to erect...
During the 80s they played with some classical forms and the results was called Post Modernism, but this is totally different...
Bad taste on his most pure form...
I love Chicago, I love SOM, Phillip Johnson and many other american architects but this building is unlovable...
gusgazman November 6th, 2008, 05:28 AM By the way. I do live in Montevideo, Uruguay, South America...
I was living in LAX from 1973 to 1975 studying at the UCLA...
Greetings from sunny Montevideo!

gusgazman November 6th, 2008, 05:48 AM In order to make a classic building you need to follow some specific rules and proportions, if not you can get everyting but a classic... Sometimes you can get acceptable results... Sometimes you get THE ELYSIAN...
gusgazman November 6th, 2008, 05:50 AM Don't you love a little criticism?
As far as I know you live in the country of FREE SPEACH...
In my country that conecpt works very well too...!
spire1000 November 6th, 2008, 05:51 AM who cares if its not classic.every building doesnt have to be classic.look, we get the point that you think this building is not classic. Now will you please stop repeating the same thing over and over again and get over it.

pokistic November 24th, 2008, 07:45 PM Wow great shots! Looks like is going to have a sweet roof.
WorldCity November 25th, 2008, 11:13 PM very very nice pics, and a great project!! I like buildings with a skinn of glass, but this is also really nice!
wy the crane have a lot of connections with the building? I thought it was normal to have connections with 60 or 70 meters between?
its ok like this, he will stand very strong now!!

Dan Hochhaus December 17th, 2008, 01:14 AM The Elysian is a great addition to the northern Chicago skyline, following the style of 900 North Michigan, Park Tower, the Fordham and the Pinnacle.
Btw. why is it put here among the "Highrises"? I'd say that the 686ft = 209m of the thread title are correct, compared with the neighboring towers... so The Elysian could be promoted to the "Skyscrapers" category :)
erbse December 23rd, 2008, 12:52 AM Indeed :sly:
However, time for some fresh image delivery (SSP (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=97328&page=60) of course):
