2x Cup Winner:

2x Supercup:
1995, 2010

The capacity of this stadium is 45000!!! It looks far far bigger. Must have sumo size seats!!

'The high-tech state-of-the-art 45,000 seat Toyota stadium was built as a venue for the 2002 World Cup but was overlooked when Korea became co-hosts and due to political in-fighting between the owners Toyota and the government. The stadium has a retractable roof designed to resemble the traditional curves of a temple roof, large video screen and excellent views for the spectators. The stadium is located in Toyota city and can be reached in about 50 minutes from Nagoya on the Tsurumai subway/Meitetsu Toyota Line. J. League side Nagoya Grampus eight play some of their home games at Toyota stadium.
The stadium was designed by Kisho Kurokawa Architect and Associates who also designed Oita Stadium. Opened July 2001'

Wow.... I LOVE THIS STADIUM! What a great example of how every 45,000 seater should look! I think the size is an illusion created by extremely steep upper decks. It puts fans right on top of the field! Absolutely PERFECT!

I guess the small blocks of seats are what make it look alot larger than 45k.

February 4th, 2006, 03:03 PM
also its a fragmented bowl, hence they lose the opportunity for thousands of seats in the corners...makes the place look very impressive though :)

It kind of reminds me of Arrowhead in KC and Commonwealth in Edmonton...

All bacause Japanese have different standards :) there are surely twice as many passages between sections of seats as in Europe. That IMO gives the result.
Stadium designed by Kisho Kurokawa, the same great architect that did this:

I love the steep pitch of the seats, too bad most modern stadiums are built too shallow

I do love this stadium, its probably my second favorite in Asia (behind the Niigata stadium) and the best laid out for football. Inside and out its very imposiing, the bowl is downright intimidating an yet its very attractive throughout. This the only one I have seen so far where a retractable adds to the visual appeal. I feel that the very steep pitch (that would be illegal in a number of countries) gaps in the corners and what seems like way to many sections contribute to it looking like a 60,000 seater. I would love to see and hear a capacity crowd in there, looks like it would be among the best in the world for atmosphere. I think Pompey could take some cues from this plan, they could do it way cheaper than the Herzog & DeMeuron proposal, it would IMO look much better, and that would definately be real homefield advantage.

Thats beautiful. I wish stadiums in the US were like this. I love the curvature of the building and the steepness of the seats.

from worldstadiums.com
Toyota Stadium was developed by Kisho Kurokawa Architect & Associates and represents a compact space created using a set of slightly inclined, reinforced concrete septa which are heightened from the flat ground. The outside is characterized by four large steel and pointed pennons that offer an endearing feeling to the complex which also compliment the continuous waved profile of the upper tiers that rise towards the main tribunes.
http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_menu/architecture/stadium_design/pictures/toyota_stadium/toyota_stadium1.jpg

The shape of the metallic roof is accentuated by the subtle waves above the tiers which resemble the traditional shape of Japanese roofs. The roof contains an accordion-like moving element that is operated by a system of air-pillows that enables the stadium to completely close itself.

http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_menu/architecture/stadium_design/pictures/toyota_stadium/toyota_stadium2.jpg

The inside of the stadium is defined by the elegant fixed roof made of numerous metallic elements which are supported by tie-beams on the four large pennons. The pennons emerge through holes in the roof and gradually thin until reaching a height of 93 meters.

The mobile roof glides on rails put on the supporting beams on the fixed roof - it opens and closes like an accordion and functions on a system of air-pillows that lightens the weight.

http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_menu/architecture/stadium_design/pictures/toyota_stadium/toyota_stadium4.jpg

The unique mobile roof functions on technology chosen by Ove Arup & Partners and allows the roof to completely close in less than one hour. However, the construction phase required detailed attention and precision because strong gusts of wind could have blown away the entire structure. Time management was of crucial importance and therefore the mobile roof was constructed in less than six days.

Your wish is my command! :)

Not sure if that complies with Sercan's vision of this thread, but here you have a bunch of some 5000-8000 Urawa supporters at the stadium in goooood voice. I think the effect is amazing, but it's both class of the stadiums and class of these Japanese fanatcis :) The home crowd of Nagoya Grampus Eight isn't surely top of the loudest supporter list

Love it!

Can't believe how low the capacity is - from some angles it looks as big as the new Wembley!

The only thing I'm not too keen on is the way that the end seats are a lighter shade than the side stands for some reason. And it would be even more awesome without the gaps between the side and end stands. I'm sure it's done that way for a reason (light, air circulation, etc) but a complete bowl with that roof would be amazing.

On the down side the back row (rows) up on the sides are WAY up there. Kind of like the experience of watching it on TV. Also if the first eight rows extended around the end lines as well that would add a couple thousand seats, in if you got rid of half of the aisles and alcoves/ breaks theres a couple thousand more. So if it were done by European standards for Asle numbers and field proximity I think you ave got a 50,000 seater, if there were seats in the corners of the upper level it would probably in the 55,000 seat range. So I guess its not quite as deceptive as initially thought. I still love it though, and should I ever find myself around Tokyo (I doubt I will, but) I will definately try to catch a game there.

Only minus is the difference in seating colours and that there is no real connextion between the stands behind the goals and the side lines. This would make the stadium even better my opinion, because the beautifull shape would jump out more.
I like it so much though!

Very beautiful stadium. Looks bigger than 45 000 because there are a lot of access stairs very close each one to the other. Besides, tribunes are like more than 45º inclination which gives the design this optical illusion. Sometimes, this feature is fully utilizised to obtain such a result so the local team is favoured during a match with the help of supporters on tribunes.

Great stadium. I think the reason they have so many exits in stadiums in Japan is because of earthquakes. If there was a quake during a game and some damage occurred the fans could use an alternate exit in case the one closest to them is damaged.

Question..does anyone know the average attendance for soccer games in Japan? Thank you.
