Mosi-oa-Tunya May 2nd, 2007, 11:16 PM This city is a depressing cesspool! Quite a contrast to the quaint and lively Maputo, which is a boomtown. Beira on the other hand will likely remain rundown as it is linked to Zimbabwe, which has collapsed economically under Mugabe and there are no real tourists coming to it like there is to Maputo, which is 120 km from the SA border. I'm afraid we'll have to wait for the political situation to change in Zimbabwe before the Beira corridor can be revived.
Also Beira is the only city in Mozambique not governed by the ruling Frelimo party, but is run by Renamo, the former rebel movement that waged a 16-year war against the Frelimo government that used to be Marxist.
In Beira there is only one decent hotel, the Tivoli (3-stars) and the rundown Embaixador (one-star), while the other four are closed and in ruins.
The infamous Hotel Grande that closed down when the independence war began in 1964, which was once the luxury hotel with casino, but now has the goats and squatters on the front porch to greet you. There are lots of pics of it.
The Dom Carlos and Estoril, located in a once posh seaside district of the city, are derelict despite failed attempts to reopen them, the latest by Echo Delta, owned by a corrupt and disreputable British businessman, which bought the properties for an undisclosed sum but nothing has happened to them.
The Hotel Mozambique was once the tallest hotel in Mozambique at 14 Floors but was closed down and it became a derelict slum for the poor residents of the city.
Interesting you should do a thread on this war-ravaged city. I think if you want to look at the cities of Mozambique to the north of Maputo, better look at Xai Xai, Vilankulo (formerly Vilanculos), Inhambane and Pemba. These cities are charming and are appealing. Even Quelimane is much better than Beira although it is a dump too, while Nampula is a rundown nothing place.
Bond James Bond May 2nd, 2007, 11:22 PM This place looks like it desperately needs some help.

Btw, someone is singing a song about the beauty of Beira when you watch the video.

Matthias Offodile April 10th, 2008, 11:46 AM Do you think that you can find a few more classics (inner city)?
The train station seems to be out of service! Look at their shedules, nothing is written there any more.
The city is in a very dismal state considering that peace in Mocambique started in 1992, ten years before Angola!
GregPz April 10th, 2008, 01:19 PM Sad to see all those abandoned hotels. Other areas in Moz such as Pemba, Vilanculos and even Maputo are becoming popular tourist destinations. My dad has got old videos from around 1950 when he went there on holiday as a kid and the place looks beautiful. Unfortunately it's now just too run down to have tourist appeal. Hopefully something will be done as it looks like some of the basic infrastructure is still in place.
Barragon June 17th, 2008, 09:20 PM ^^ It's a shame to have those beautiful buildings in that condition :ohno:

I agree.
I hope Beira getting better soon.
CroissantLBV July 9th, 2008, 01:13 PM unbelievable, 15 years after peace agreement was signed and the city still looks like 1992? Ohhhh Africa.:ohno:

kemet1984 July 11th, 2008, 08:49 PM Beira looks like a hollow shell. But I don't think it's irredeemable. The form for a lively city is definitely there.
angcammoc July 12th, 2008, 12:37 AM Barragon I'm from angola
kemet1984, I don't know why the city is been ignored, it is obvious that they haven't built a single building since the portuguese left.
well except for super markets which are so many in beira
Barragon July 12th, 2008, 01:53 AM Então falas Portugues? :)
Bem vindo welcome :okay:
Beira was the seaport for Rodesia, and had a busy railroad  after the war.. it stopped :ohno:
angcammoc July 12th, 2008, 02:31 AM Thanks and I UNDERSTAND PORTUGUESE very clearly but my writing is not very good. I have been educated in the english system, but i have no problem with understanding
Barragon July 12th, 2008, 01:04 PM :okay: just ask if you have any doubt about a portuguese word.

I am afraid that won't happen in our lifetime, sir.
IMHO, it should be demolished and in its place a new, similar hotel should be built. :)

LOL It is sad but I think we would be lucky to even see it demolished, let alone a new one built , first of all they would have to find new homes for the 2500 squatters living there. Although arn't they tearing down another famous hotel in Beira and replacing it with a new really big one, I can't remember what it's called but I remember reading it somewhere not that long ago.:)
alama July 4th, 2012, 12:00 AM Beira needs a strong mayor and it better be a member of the Frelimo party, otherwise it will continue to be a dreary, boring, poor city where things never happen. Both things will very likely NEVER happen.

Thanks for your honesty about Mozambican "democracy"! Unfortunately, you might even be right!

Kangaroo MZ February 15th, 2013, 05:41 PM Beira|Manga-Mungassa Special Economic Zone
The Manga-Mungassa Special Economic Zone, located at the City of Beira, will be under the management of Dingsheng International Investment, Ltd, a Chinese private company which intends to invest an approximate amount of USD 500 million in the area.
The establishment process for this Special Economic Zone will comprise three phases. The first phase, which is called the phase for “logistical arrangements” will comprise the construction of warehouses to store commodities and is now at a final stage. The second phase, which is known as the “operational phase”, will comprise the construction of a three-star-hotel, a village, an exhibition centre, recreation areas and artificial lakes. The last phase will be the “Establishment of the Free Industrial Area Phase”, in which high technology units will be set in place.
It should be noted that this area will be open for domestic investors who are interested in benefiting from business opportunities. For this purpose, interested bidding companies should request the operator for this or through the Special Economic Zones Office (GAZEDA).
The manga-Mungassa Special Economic Zone, with a surface area of 217 hectares, is the second Special Economic Zone to be established by the Government in order to stimulate the country’s economic and social development. It is expected that the establishment of the area will maximize the Beira Corridor potentialities.

donizete March 15th, 2013, 04:56 PM This city is a depressing cesspool!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would question why this looks terrible this city. Not needed, you answered satisfactorily.

popa1980 March 31st, 2013, 11:45 AM I agree. It looks very run down. Mozambique looks to be going down the UK and other African nations like Ghana's route, with a huge gap between the rest of the country and the capital.
Kangaroo MZ March 31st, 2013, 12:00 PM There's politics involved here as well.
You see, many of the cities run by the main party - Frelimo are actually having mini booms of their own (Tete, Nacala, pemba, etc).
