Seattle: Research by Skyscrapers.com's editors has stripped Seattle's famous Smith Tower of one of its records, and some of its height.

Ever since Smith Tower was conceived in 1910, it has always been labeled a 42-story tower. It also laid claim to be the tallest skyscraper in the world outside of New York City. Neither is correct. Our research shows that the tower's actual height is only 465 feet (not 500 as claimed), and only has 35 floors (38 counting the steeple vents).

When the tower opened on July 4, 1914 it was the tallest building in the United States west of Ohio - but not the tallest outside of New York. Cincinnati's completed PNC Tower and the completed City Hall were both taller.

this building looks really special. i mean, the large amount of windows in this building really make this one look like a cross between neo-classical and international style. and it's the tallest in the west for 49 years!!! (even though l.a., dallas, houston, and san fran got more ppl than seattle).

I just started working at Smith Tower at their observation deck. The building has more than 35 floors (that's the floor of the observation deck) because there's a 4 story pyramid penthouse on top. Their elevators have elevator operators because they still use the old elevators (They taught me how to manually run them). Smith Tower is a pretty cool building.

The windows are far to wide and the crown isnt very decorative, which is surprising, but that said it is still a pretty tower. 7

This was a nice building coming from that time. Its not as beautiful as others but a great hight for 1914

Strongest 10!!!!! One of my 5 favorite skyscrapers in the Universe, and my definite #1 favorite in Seattle.

In the top photo here, look at the juxtaposition of Smith Tower on the left and BofA tower on the right. Perfect example of older classic architecture vs. the glass box :tiasd:

Everyone has their own favorites----- and I can't say enough good things about the Smith Tower:)

when i was younger i played a computer game named 'simcity', in that game you could build a city. In that city you could also build monuments from all over the world, one of them was the smith tower which was always the first building in my new town. :)
