View Full Version : Dhaka at Night
tanzirian August 11th, 2008, 03:09 AM Thanks for the info Manbil bhai...for now I only have a point and shoot camera...Sony DSC-W100...which seems to do rather poorly in low light situations....even when I use the "low light" setting. I will have sit down the manual some day...if I can find where I put it :)

Here's a nice writeup (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_w100-review/) for your SONY -- according to which, you can set manual exposure of max. 30 seconds in your camera.
I'd set the ISO at 80, aperture at f5.6 from the menu then experiment with exposure times of 20, 25 and 30 seconds. Those should do the trick. If not -- bump up the ISO to 100 and even 160 (no more) which should increase the brightness in the exposure compared to ISO 80.
The reason your 'low light' mode shots are turning out bad is because that mode chooses a high ISO of 1250, which is so grainy (full of noise) that the shots are useless.
You can just read the review, no need for finding the manual. Very lucidly explained.

Anytime Mirza and same to you -- TAN :)
manbil777 August 13th, 2008, 06:45 AM OK Guys -- just for tutorial's sake, here're some night-time shots I took this last weekend while walking around Laguna Beach next to our favorite dinner-place -- while the rest of the 'famille' was having coffee and dessert (which I don't dig much anyway).
Used a small tripod i carry in the trunk. You can see that trial-and-error (at least two, preferably five shots) is the norm. For the shoreline shot I used 30, 60, 120 seconds (dark to light), for the moonlit shot I used 60 and 120 seconds (the lighter shot is 120 seconds).
APS-C format sensor (Pentax), used f5.6, ISO 200 (lowest available) and Bulb mode. No remote- - used shutter release very softly. Most small point-n-shoot cameras can do this as well -- but you *have* to use a Tripod (no matter how cheap) and possibly weigh it down so the wind does not move it. Otherwise the blur/shake will ruin every shot.
Which shot is the best? I'd probably go with one that is better composed and has lots of shadow detail. You can also layer these shots (identical except exposure) and come up with more of an ideal shot.

City of Laguna Beach (http://www.beachcalifornia.com/laguna.html) -- about sixty miles south of LA, on Pacific Coast Highway (Calif. State Highway 1).
This is on top of a bluff (cliff) about a hundred feet above the beach.
khalek August 16th, 2008, 08:02 AM Wow Dhaka city is starting to shape up very well, its looking very modern now :)

with all these experts in our forum, shouldn't we have some banners from night shots?
Also - can we have pictures of other Bangladeshi cities?

manbil777 May 22nd, 2009, 09:09 AM ^^ Great shot and very evocative of a late spring evening in Dhaka.
I can almost imagine the car-horns faintly in the distance. A hint of foggy chill still hanging in the air.
And the heady scent of 'gandharaj (Gardenia jasminoides) (http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/IslandJim_1145722640_222.jpg)' and 'Hasnahena (Cestrum_nocturnum) (http://www.ranger146.com/N_Leighton_Drive/pics/Cestrum_nocturnum.jpg)' flowers behind me blooming on the roof garden.
Visions of late evenings from a time far far away...
meghnarmajhi May 22nd, 2009, 09:24 AM yeah... i'm getting a bit poetic too.

Majhi Bhai -- Gandharaj laganor time ekhoni. I planted a couple on the backyard two weeks ago. All nurseries in LA have them now. About fifteen bucks each.
