Awesome pictures Mirza! I think you and Tmac have done a great job showing off dhaka at night. The reason why I like looking at Dhaka at night is because most metropolitan cities look very cool at night and Dhaka is definitely no exception. Hope to see more pics later on.

Can't contribute a whole lot to this thread, being 10,000 or so miles away, but here's a little offering:

My extended family owns three buildings in the Arambagh area adjacent to Motijheel. I took this pic around sunset in 1998 from the roof of one of those buildings; if you look closely you can see a cousin of mine standing on the roof of another. Such an unobstructed view is not possible today, due to buildings that have popped up since then.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r94/tanzirian/2000.jpg

I have a low-end scanner, which is why some of the non-digital photos I post are not as crisp as they might otherwise be. But better than no scanner :).

Aktel = 70% from TM +30% from AK Khan family from Chittagong (thats why its called AKTel)
Citycell= 49% Pacific Group (Pacific group owned by Mr.Morshed Khan, former Foreign Minister) + 51% Singtel
GrameenPhone= 65% Telenor+ 35% Grameen Telecom(owned by Dr. Yunus's Grameen)
The rest info are absolutely right ...

but the shares change sometimes...this is as far as i am aware of...but not much differs anyway

Very nice shots of Mirpur there.Mirpur is among the worst and poorest areas of Dhaka, but it isn't looking so much like that in the pics.

Indeed, historically people with the lowest income bracket live in Mirpur. There are tens and thousands of 1.75 Katha (Yes, not even 2 katha) plots created on, before and after the liberation by the govt to accommodate low income people there.

But things have changed, Right now there are big commercial buildings being located on both sides of the road that runs from Mirpur #10 circle to #12. Quite a change from 10-15 years ago. Mirpur #1 is changing too.

Another night pic of Nagar Bhaban (City Hall)...this time with decorations...photo by iamshaon (in background I think that is the Secretariat also lighted up):

Is this because of some special occasion. I thought the govt. banned any lighting for liberation day celebration.

Yeah -- great job Amar.

I'll have to tackle this night-shot thing next time I go back home -- looks like a fun hobby while everybody else is asleep :)

Not to be picky -- but would the multi-second exposures turn out a little better if we didn't have the light sources in the frames themselves?

Just curious if anyone has tried nightshots this way?

Like long exposures, layered-multi exposures, small apertures like f16, f22?

Another technique to really light up a building facade is to keep the shutter open and do multiple flash exposures with manual flash trigger (you will need a large flash --even a large torchlight or car headlights will do if aimed properly).
Basically you're painting your building with your light source by running around.

When done -- simply close the shutter.

True -- colors are oversaturated (one might say unrealisitic) but these days everyone's taste is subjective.

But what is reality anyhow? It is dependent on one's interpretation...maybe that's how they visualized it.

Excellent well-composed shot!

Probably used a tripod which improved the shot greatly.

A few more seconds of exposure and would've been even better (building details would've shown up).

The addition of clouds on a moonlight night adds greatly to the night-shots (Jochhona Rat). As can be seen in the last few above.

Here's a Portuguese guy with pretty good skills in doing some of this (and a Canon 20d). One beach scene 'Praia do Carvoeiro' was lit entirely with flashes (looks like a >5 minute shot).

While it is nice to observe a well lit city, I think it is incumbent upon the business and commerce folks to dim their lights, perhaps turn them off completely, past a certain hour, save for the street lights. The city dwellers could get some badly needed relief and turn on their fans at night. Of course, they may return to their glory once electricity is plentiful.

You guessed it right..its time for Uttara and Nikunjo to get the towers, even though they are popping up all over the city, even in relatively older parts like Baitul Muk. Area and Bijoynagar

Great night-time panos! Very calm in the evening.

If I had to pick nits -- I'd want to get rid of the power-line wires with the clone-tool (few minutes work).

I also wish he would do the same pano at the Parliament Building with the reflecting pool there (and added HDR).

Then it could become a great banner for us too.

It's nice that it was taken before Nafi started rising...although the new tower adds density, the clear outlines of the older towers might not be possible if the pic was taken today. Then again, I might be wrong on that :)

Actually Nafi Tower is the one in the middle:),and you cant see Navana Tower cause the view has been blocked by Silver Tower on the left..and Jabbar Tower is not visible in the pic either as it lies futher left. You can expect Lotus Kamal Tower 2 to rise just beside Uday Tower in a year or so.

I stand corrected...I thought the one in the middle was the back of Navana. There's more space between Nafi and Uday than I thought.

Hi Enu, great to hear from you again. With all the Hatirjheel imporvements your backyard should be one of the nicest in Dhaka when all is done :) With regard to your question....Tmac hasn't been here for a while. He wanted to step down as mod, though none of us really know why...he may have other things he needs to deal with, I don't know. Thanks Amar...and thanks to Mr. Kid :) ...I loved those Kawran cluster shots. Some day I've got to learn how to take pictures at night.

I'll post a tutorial for you guys if I find some time... meanwhile, here are some quick read-ups.

Sean McHugh (http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/techniques.htm)

Bruce Clendenning (http://www.brokentripod.com/MOONLIGHT2/LOTMoon2.html)

I usually set my aperture to f5.6, set ISO to 100 (200 is lowest for some digital SLR's, then set f6.3 or f7.1) and then experiment with exposures of about 1 minute to 4 minutes.

If you have auto- exposure and matrix metering then set metering with darker parts of the screen and don't meter with bright points of light (sodium vapor lights on the street). I don't meter with DSLR because exposures in that dark of an environment is inaccurate. Manual trial-and-error is best method to find ideal exposure.

Ideally -- moonlit nights produce better results for me. Consult your local Hujur for when full-moon nights will occur!
