I stumbled on it while doing a "Bing" search for Middle Eastern/Mediterranean eateries in Dhaka. My real name is Shakil Maruf, 38 years old, married and a father of two. I'm a software engineer working for Trane Inc. Before this I had a 4 year stint at Motorola. I've been living in Minnesota, USA for the last 18 years and before that spent most of my childhood and adolescent years in Kuwait. My connection with Bangladesh, especially rural areas of Feni, Noakhali and Comilla, is especially strong due to numerous trips made as a child and also for the presence of extended family members. My hobbies include travel, photography, aviation, mobile computing and being bit of a food connoisseur. Hope to have lots of fun interacting with other Deshi members and also become knowledgeable about the urban scene in Dhaka. tanzirian June 9th, 2009, 06:34 PM ^^ Welcome, samaruf. I'm Systems Engineer, live in London but I try to go back home every couple of years, not as frequent as I'd like to…(but went twice last year not sure how I managed that :) ). I am from Electronics background but switched to IT after college. Always had keen interest on gadgetries, I like technologies. Been interested in solar energy for some time but never got the time or money to experiment with…. I would like to import solar energy equipment from China, hope someone can point me in the right direction on how the shipping process works in Chittagong. Yes, a lot of Hawaii feels like what Bangladesh (especially the hill tracts) would look like if it were a more developed country. There are some Bangladeshis in Honolulu, most of them associated with U of H. You can drive all the way to the summit of Mauna Kea (14k feet) if you have a 4x4 and are not afraid of mountain driving! To tour the facilities you'll have to go with a group. Or let me know next time you're on the Big Island and I'll give you a private one (U of H astronomers have access to most of the Mauna Kea telescopes, though not all). tanzirian August 28th, 2009, 12:30 AM Hi Tan, I lived in Durham during my college days in NC. The Big Island is my favorite. Yeah, I would much rather go to some of the other islands if I can, and perhaps I shall. The reason for going to Oahu is a free ticket that I will get. I am a bit of a waterfall fan and Kuai, Molokai, Maui, and the Big Island are very rich in these, including many of the world's tallest. But I am sure I shall enjoy Honolulu, plus I want to check out Lanikai Beach. fallstuf November 23rd, 2009, 03:37 AM I must be the old f*** here ! Been in the US for about 19 yrs. Our younger members, as you noticed, make this forum one of the most vibrant Bangladesh related sites on the net. Enjoy and contribute. fallstuf November 23rd, 2009, 08:32 AM Welcome to the forum fallstuf. You along with a few of us reaching the 40's are a definite minority here but it's all good. Our younger members, as you noticed, make this forum one of the most vibrant Bangladesh related sites on the net. Enjoy and contribute. Thanks samaruf. After I came here , I had little connection with Dhaka other than my family. International calls were very expensive. I actually wrote letters ( no email, no VoIP), but over time the letter writing stopped and eventually lost connections with my friends. When I went back to Dhaka in 2000, I was kinda joking with a relative, "I left you a nice clean city , what did you do it." There were smoke and construction everywhere. The city looked like a disaster zone ! Gulshan, Banani, Dhanmondi changed completly. Traffic was horrendous. The nice and quiet Gulshan I knew was gone. But at the end, it is home sweet home. It was good to be back. I tried to find some old friends that didn't go abroad. Couldn't find any one. I used to have a friend that lived on RD 15 in Dhanmondi, when I went there, well the house was gone, and in its place is a multi-storied building. My in-law took me to drive to Jamuna Bridge, it was nice. We went over the bridge, and stopped on the other side and walked around for a little time enjoying the afternoon . A little boy was selling some snacks there, I politely refused his snacks but gave him Tk 50, and told him to keep it. Didn't want to get the worst case of diarrhea, after spending the first four days with an infectious soar throat. The last I went back was in 2003. Spent more time with family. The kids in the family ( cousins, neice and nephews) all grown up, and a few I didn't see before. Bought a bunch of stuff from Arong. I do remember having Kabab at the penthouse restaurant in Banani on Kamal Ataturk. The food was great. After a few days of my arrival we went for a drive to Comilla. The entire drive I saw Brick-fields on both side of the road. The memorable part was watching the Bus drivers playing chicken on the road !! At one point our car had to get off the road and on the shoulder because there were three buses next to each other, heading towards us blowing their horns. We had to chicken out :D! Had lunch at a restaurant at a Bus station in Comilla. I still remember the taste of Dal. It was awsome.... . My sister was furious about the trip, and boy she was tripping. She thought I was being too cavalier and could get robbed, I told her "I don't think so, I was born and raised in Dhaka." :D Pardon my nostalgia ! Its great to see a country that was absolutely devastated by war, almost zero capital and equipment, and $34 ( yes, it was thirty four dollars !) in foreign reserve, now has more than $10 billion in reserve, and still going strong in spite of the global recession. Dhakaiya November 23rd, 2009, 12:12 PM I must be the old f*** here ! Been in the US for about 19 yrs. Bachelor in MIS from Florida Atlanic Uni. Masters in Network Security fro MD. I own businesses and also do IT consulting. You guys are all so young ! I like the directness of the younger population here on the Blog. We were not like this ! We were taught to be polite and always be composed, in other words don't go around making an a** out of yourself. I also like the positive energy around this kids. Had the opportunity to meet couple of guys from BD few months ago at a school. I was pleasantly surprised to see the kids fresh from BD, and very different than me and my buddies were about 20yrs ago. I can't exactly say what it is different, but when I talked to those guys they seemed like more versed, cultured, and rrrrrrready tooo rrrrumble. Thanks for sharing some of your nostalgic moments. I actually have a photo or two in here of buses playing chicken on the Meghna bridge while going to Feni. That's why we definitely need the Dhaka-Chittagong highway expanded to at least 4-lanes if not more. I'll be going home this Dec 12th and as a special trip will try to visit the Jamuna bridge area as I have not seen it before. One of our members here, Mirza, dutifully posts photos of different structures going up in Dhaka. Can't wait to see all the changes since my last trip in 2007. tanzirian November 23rd, 2009, 04:24 PM Welcome fallstuf, good to have you here. I am Tunir (I know, it's an odd name) Khan. But I go by Akash. I am in my mid-thirties and just moved to Minnesota, USA from Zion, IL (a small town), due to a job transfer. I am in the re-insurance field and am a middle manager of sort:-) I have been with the same company for about thirteen years now.......... Still single:-) Iam trying to find deshi/Indian people here in Minnesota! I have met a few people so far and everyone seems to be friendly and as such. I particularly liked two of them so far - one guy who is trying to do a renewalble energy project for Bangladesh and another one(an Indian) who owns a LARGE IT outsourcing firm in Minneapolis, MN ( one of the larger cities here). I have been in US for almost twenty years and I lived in PA, NJ and VA before IL. I have been home a few times only due to the job demand:-( ........I grew up in Dhaka (Kachukhet/ cantonment area). I like reading, travelling, technologies etc. I have been to about thirty countries so far (mostly job related, as I work for a company that has offices in over 100 countires). BTW, I found this post while I was doing some research on Dhaka. I wanted to join immediately but I had to wait about six days before the "validation" e-mail arrived in my inbox!! If you subscribe to the MNBDS@yahoogroups.com forum, you will be in touch with most Bangladeshis in Minnesota. Just yesterday we had our Eid gathering in Hopkins with almost 200 people in attendance. If you need any assistance, just send me a PM(private message). cnfk3 November 30th, 2009, 09:07 PM Thanks Manazir and Maruf. I will try to subscribe to that group. How many Bangladeshis are in MN/Twin Cities? And I am sorry but I am not sure how to do a PM here:-( Not that techno savvy:-( I will figure it out, when I get some more time later on. Thanks again. I will try to read more post and add my thoughts as much as I can. -A tanzirian November 30th, 2009, 10:16 PM Welcome to the forums, Tunir. Hope you get hooked up with your local deshi community - I know this helps in smaller places that are less diverse, like the ones I lived in for most of my time in the US. samaruf December 1st, 2009, 12:06 AM Thanks Manazir and Maruf. On the left side you will see a column which has a section called Private Message 3. You click "Send New Message" and type in the recipient's name(skyscraper name), subject and a message just like a normal e-mail. Whenever someone responds to your PM, you will get a notification in the upper right corner in the "Welcome, member name" box. As for the number of Bangladeshis in Minnesota, it's a matter of debate but a conservative number is around 2000. Also, if you crave Bangladeshi products, Patel groceries in Bloomington and Ramadan Halal Meat in Burnsville have almost every BD export food items (fish, pickles, snacks, Aladdin sweets, spices etc.) What part of town do you live in? ::.::RAMJAN::.:: March 12th, 2010, 02:44 PM Hey there all, My name is Ramjan, I'm currently residing in Panthpath area of Dhaka city Occupation : Gsm Mobile Software, Unlocking Specilist:cheers: if anyone need help can knock me:bash: My Shop at Bashundhara city shopping mall : TRUST GSM™ Regards tanzirian March 12th, 2010, 09:20 PM ^^ Welcome, Rajman. Not all threads are dead. Some like the Aviation, Dhaka City Projects, etc., are very much alive. It all depends on whatever the current newsworthy topic that people want to discuss and a thread that's had no movement in months will suddenly come alive. The age spectrum is wide but nothing to be scared there. SSC BD is well moderated and by and large juvenile comments ( a la YouTube, etc.) are not tolerated. The age difference allows for unique perspectives on a topic and that in my opinion is healthy. Your alias "Tabassum" suggests you are a female. Be aware that just like most technical/business forums online, SSC BD has a dearth of female members. tabassum.j August 30th, 2010, 12:18 AM Not all threads are dead. And why do I have to be aware of it ?Can you elaborate please? Doesn't need much of an elaboration other than the fact that you might not find much of your demographic in the discussions due to most topics being very male centric such as aviation, infrastructure, politics, etc. From prior experience, females generally gravitate away from these discussions, which is kinda sad. Those of us who are NRBs appreciate every one of our members based in Bangladesh. Hopefully just like them, you will enjoy SSC BD enough to contribute and enlighten us on the comings and goings in our motherland. tabassum.j August 30th, 2010, 12:57 AM Doesn't need much of an elaboration other than the fact that you might not find much of your demographic in the discussions due to most topics being very male centric such as aviation, infrastructure, politics, etc. From prior experience, females generally gravitate away from these discussions, which is kinda sad. Ma grandpa's home is there in Mymensingh. And be lated Happy birthday Aryan :-) Why have you chosen Biological science for higher study ? I apologize for the late reply and thanks a lot for wishing me. Back to your question. (Its a long long story). Since my childhood (grade 4), I was ambitious to become a physician (doctor) but last year since I did volunteering (required for students applying in Pre-Medecine at McGill University), I realized that medecine is not my field. I had a really bad experience. I did not feel comfortable with patients. It was just too hard for me to see people in such conditions....Therefore, I changed my mind and I said to myself why not getting into pharmacy. Only french universities offered this program in our province, and my parents were totally against me going back to a french institution despite the fact that I studied 11 years in french (I only did my college in english)....(a long story here)....Finally, I decided to do my bachelor in biological sciences (orientation-microbiology) since I was fond of biology and chemistry. godfather.bd September 25th, 2010, 03:04 PM hi this is godfather from dacca Manazir September 25th, 2010, 09:15 PM ^^ what godfather? o_O ..... shontrashi godfather? :P tabassum.j September 28th, 2010, 11:35 PM I apologize for the late reply and thanks a lot for wishing me. I was looking for a long for a BD forum where I can interact with BD people. Who am I? Except my last two generations, all the earlier generations lived in BD's Faridpur in a village. My grand-mother was from Pabna while my father in law was from Dhaka. Now destiny has put us in a different country but I always look for friendship and look for Bangladesh's growth and progress. Only the other day I was thrilled to know that BD's PM raised at UN the issue of making Balgla bhasa as one of UN's official language. It is heartening to learn that UN is celebrating the mother language day the day Bangladesh students rose for Bangla bhasa. I am now happily settled in the western part of India.I am not sure whether this forum has restriction for people from other countries from joining. For the forum's info - my mother tongue is also bengali. Happy Id and Happy Mahalaya samaruf October 7th, 2010, 10:42 PM :ohno: Hei all! There's no restriction on anyone from around the world in joining and contributing to this forum as long as you follow certain forum etiquettes. Since your forefathers were from present day Bangladesh are you able to understand/speak Bangla? Have you ever visited BD? Just curious. Bong-Connect October 8th, 2010, 05:32 PM thanks. I do spk Bengali frankly I am a bheto bangali fond of bhat ghhom on a holiday afternoon after a special non-veggie lunch. i am simple at times emotion take precedence to logic. My only dream is to reach the masses through writing and net. Yes, I have a sweet dream to stay for a day in the village my granddad's father stayed. But with the passage of time and of death of earlier generations we have lost the name of village. charlischarm March 6th, 2011, 04:45 PM It's nice to see you buddies. musiccity May 3rd, 2011, 04:54 AM Hello I'm musiccity, I'm an American forumer who travels around SSC visiting (or staying) in forums that catch my eye. I heard Muscat is really nice and scenic but I never got the chance to visit :( no problem ;) yes atm i am in muscat, and been here since last 8 years and got very bored, InshAllah moving to germany by september for studies :) Muscat is quite clean and peaceful, that's what I can say but there isn't really much to do here, a 2 week visit would be enough for any tourist in this city. dhakalist May 10th, 2011, 07:56 AM Hi All This is from www.dhakalist.com This website is all about our beautiful city Dhakalist team bosshp June 4th, 2011, 11:45 PM hi ! new mem !
