Thats cause unlike the other teams, the leafs are and always will be the sens greatest rival. Even if our team might suck right now. Funny thing though is, even if all those cities support you, Toronto and its surrounding areas still have a bigger population hence bigger fan base

Anyways I am going wayyy offtopic now so i will stop, lol my bad for going so off topic.

I was born in Dhaka at its older part (So am I more Dhakaiya than our Dhakaiya?:D )...studied in various schools then Notre Dame College then BUET. I am with movies, music, cricket, news, documentaries mostly...and pretend to be a good electronic engineer in my spare times:D! Ya I am a movie-addicted person.

Chemistry and Accounting....those were probably my two fav subjects back in high school. I don't know if you have organic chemistry but when I started studying for the GCSE/O'level, I started with organic even though it was in the later part of the course...and it helped me grasp things better....even the electro-chemistry part...which I totally hated..

As for accounting....try to visualize the events in your mind. I don't remember it getting too complicated back then so try to remember some simple rules. Try to remember what transactions go on which side of the T for the important accounts. It always helped me to actually understand what's going on as opposed to just remember or memorizing stuff (I have terrible short-term memory...lol).

Good luck with the exams :)

Ok now let me introduce myself, I am joy, born and bought up in Chittagong, my lovely city. I am not a young guy nor is an old guy, actually this definition differ from person to person. Anyways tareq i am in chemical engineering so pretty much all i do all day is chemisty.

Welcome Banglapride! One of the reasons we wanted a subforum was to attract and retain more Bangladeshi forumers, and certainly this seems to have been the case. Will look forward to your contributions. Do you live in Chittagong now? If so, you must be our local bureau chief and give us lots of photos!

PS It's OK if no photos (don't want to scare you away :) )!

Sorry dude, I am far from Chittagong. I live in Canada. When I was in back home, I used to use dial up connection and those line was even slow for email checking, most of us didn’t have the luxury to visit these kind of websites. Currently some people enjoying high speed internet in Dhaka, however there is no decent hi speed internet provider in Chittagong. Some provider offers hi speed internet in Chittagong, unfortunately speed is really sucks, and even there is a limitation for download and upload. If the situation improves, I believe we would see lots of friends from Dhaka (we already have few friends from Dhaka), Chittagong and other parts of Bangladesh. I am not sure whether you guys noticed this or not, if you go to different chat room you will see lots of people from Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet or even from Rajshahi and Khulna. These guys obviously gonna visit different forums like this if they have decent internet speed.

Congrats on the newly married life!

Unfortunately my own job means that even when I get to go to Bangladesh, it is for nine or ten days max...which is why I don't get to go out of Dhaka much. But if I ever get to go for more than a few weeks I will definitely try to get out of the city and visit Baliati and some of the other nice old buildings dotting the countryside. Until then I'll look forward to your photos!

I-95 through SC, where I live, is a pretty boring stretch. Most of what there is to see here is on the coast or upstate. I have driven to DC from Columbia, SC via 95 and also through the mountains to the west. The latter route takes 9.5 hr vs 8 hr by 95 but is a much nicer drive, if you have the time. Mostly I have used 95 to get to Orlando but there is always construction on the road slowing things down and making the trip less pleasant.

Let's see what you mentioned :D

Main attraction of north of Bangladesh are historical sites. Rajshahi town itself is probably not the most attractive place but you can hang out by the Ganges (what we call Padma). The main tourist attractions in terms of historical sites are the Hindu temples at Puthia (very close to Rajshahi) and Buddhist monastery at Paharpur.

If you have more time then Gaur is probably the most overlooked site. This was the main city of medieval Bengal. Today the monuments are split between India and Bangladesh but still a nice place to visit.

Some isolated monuments include Kantajir Mandir, Kusumba Masjid, and Bagha Masjid. There are also several other archaeological sites besides Paharpur, most important being Mahasthangahr, and there are several places with grand old colonial mansions, most notably Natore and Pabna.

Hmm.. I didn't know that there are Buddhist monastries in BD-- anyway are those masjids still exist in its original form ?

Well, the things I really want to see in BD are the... people, food , and culture. Ofcourse it will be nice to make city tour and natural sightseeing but... I'm quite interested in people. Especially on how Islamic life looks like in BD :)

Anyway Tanzir, why don't you go to BD this December ? We can meet up !

Any forumers in Dhaka at present ? Dhakaiya ? :D

Bengal was the last major center of Buddhism in the Indian subcontinent under the Pal dynasty (700s - 1100s AD)...a golden age in our history. Somapura Vihara in Paharpur is the main surviving relic of that time (check out the thread in the heritage section if you like). The Pals had an active trading relationship with Southeast Asia and had a strong influence on the monastic architecture in your part of the world. Paharpur is not an active monastery but Bangladesh is about 1% or so Buddhist and you can find active ones especially in the southeast. Paharpur is a UNESCO World Heritage site and definitely worth checking out if you have the time.

The masjids I mentioned all exist in original form (minus the tilework and gilding that used to cover some of their surfaces). You can find pictures in the "Colorful and Historic Mosques" or "Bangladesh Tourism" threads in the Heritage section of the forum. The largest concentration of historic Muslim monuments in Rajshahi division is at Gaur (Chhotta Shona Masjid, Darasbari Masjid, Khania Dighi Masjid, Masjid and Hammam of Shah Nimatullah, and the ruins of a Madrassah). Gaur was the capital of Bengal for most of the time between the 1300s and 1500s...another golden age in our history. The border between India and Bangladesh runs right through Gaur, splitting the historic buildings between the two countries. Kusumba and Bagha Masjids are also not far from Gaur, but keep in mind that the roads to all these places are probably not great, so they may take some time getting to even if they are not far as the crow flies. If you are interested in traditional Bangladeshi Islamic architecture outside of Dhaka then Gaur is the place I would recommend (also Bagerhat, another World Heritage Site, which is in Khulna division). If you plan to visit Gaur or some other place like that I can give you some more info on the masjids there. Of course Dhaka itself has many little places you can check out.

You are right though that the culture is the main attraction BD has to offer and having a local friend will help you a enjoy that a lot more than the average tourist.

As for me I think the expense will make it impractical for me to go again this year (I went in January)...also I generally go back together with my parents and they will probably not be going. So next year maybe.

If I recall correctly ENU invited you to his house a long time ago :D...so maybe you can get in touch with him :). Dhakaiya has been busy with his studies so unfortunately has not been around the forum much lately.

Thanks brother for a very detailed guide of Bangladesh, I will print it and bring it with me there.

Actually my friend Mr Faruk in Dhaka also plan to take me to Gaur near the Indian border. But similar to what you mentioned, he said transportation can be a problem and that we must change into many buses to reach there.

Also I would love to see the Sundarban and Barisal region. It is said that Barisal is the most "original" place of Bangladesh.

Eid Mubarak to all of you :)

Hi all... Salam .. Adab!

My name is Shafi Khan... have afew titles to my name HND; B.A. Hons; M.A. for those who take interest in a persons educational background! I studied Business and Management at University..

I am from London .. 25 years old.. father of 1... my son is nearly a year old.. I am originally from Biswanath, Sylhet.. grew up there and came to the UK as a 6 year old in 1988.. been here ever sience.. and looking foward to going back to where I came from.. YES I'd like to go back to Bangladesh and set up business there (a mad decision according to my friends :s) - I love bangladesh been there afew times .. once in 1994 for 4 weeks.. than again in 2001 for 3 weeks.. than again to get married in 2005 for 3 months... I love it there and I think I will be able to provide a better quality of life for my son and inshallah other children when I have them... and Ill also be able to look after my dad who wants to spend his retiretment in Bangladesh .. He has about 100 acres of land there (mostly argricultural) and wants one of us to look after it when his not around... We are five brothers.. but no one else wants to go to BAngladesh!

I aint got a clue about how to do business in Bangladesh - need to learn! lol... my priortiy right now is to build myself a comfortable place to live in Bangladesh.. than will invest in afew businessess or someting... I am completely unprepared and mad I know! .. but I give myself a target of 4 years till I send a cargo of my things to Bangladesh to start a new life there... I dont think I can stay away from London too long though.. all my family will be here.. so Ill come here once every 2 years on holiday to see my family ... Ill come one year.. they will go BD the next.. this way Ill see them every year inshAllah... I made a deal with them!

Well this introduction is chaning to a short biography... lol.. sorry if I bored u!

Take care!

Allah hafiz!

Hi Mirza,

Thanks for the welcome! There is a lot of money to be made in Bangladesh as its a developing country..

I am from Biswanath in SYLHET district.. and would like to build my house next to our old one in the village.... Having lived in the city all my life I love the village life... the serenity of the village is second to none for me..

My brothers and I have been thinking about the real estate business in Bangladesh - with a rising population there is always demand for housing.. .. hmmm lets see how it goes!

Rod cement business is also good I understand? do enlighten me as to what is a viable sector to enter in BD.. I will take around 3crore with me and am planning to sell some of my dads land .. maybe to the value of 2crore... so Ill have a 5crore fund to start on... I'll probably take 2crore of that by starting the real estate in Sylhet.. have a small plot of land there my brothers recon we can build 15 flats there with 2crore and get a rental income of 1.5lac a month.. enough for me to live on in BD comfortably without needing to call the UK for financial help to pay the bills .. LOL! .. so I guess ill have around 3 crore to invest in other fields IA..

Guys let me know of any viaible ideas... I like to plan things.. makes me feel well prepared.

Having met people from so many countries, I must admit that I've yet to find a friendlier race than Bangladeshis. Among all foreigners I've met, Bangladeshi people in general, are the most friendly, kind, and the most approachable. ( even before going to BD ) . Of course BD has natural wonders such as SUndarban and Cox Bazaar Beach, but in my opinion the No.1 attraction of Bangladesh is the people.

Welcome animelover, Kamustak. Man I will never think twice once I got a job offer or any opprotunity to live in Bangladesh. The reason is easy-- great people. As mentioned earlier, I have never met a friendlier race other than Bangladeshis ( it's not a praise , guys, but it's a fact ).

Here are what I found unique about Bangladeshi people:

1) I noticed that BD ppl in general, don't like to stress much about their own selves, but they tend to encourage other persons to talk . I mean.. they are more happy to listen to what others say instead of emphasizing their own opinions. Is that right, guys ? :D

2) Despite economic situation and low wages , the ppl in general never give up in life and extremely hardworking-- they do things from start until finish. They always try their best to stay happy. I salute these ppl very highly. I really hope Bangladesh can prosper rapidly and bring the economic wealth to everybody , the people of BD really deserve it .

3) From my vast experience with so many foreigners, I've met hundreds of very friendly people from some countries too , but most of them tend to stick only among their own race and nationality . Try send e-mails to them and you will never get replies. I mean.. they are just too nationalistic .. can't really talk and discuss personal issues with them, just because you don't belong to their race ..... However, BD people ( in general ) , are totally different-- it's very very easy to get along with them as they are very sincere and very enthusiastic to know about you . Their circle is always open to everybody from any nationalities. Everybody is super friendly .

4) ( being a Muslim ), Bangladeshi Muslims are very practising, at least among all my BD friends. I haven't met a Bangladeshi Hindu yet, hopefully in the near future.

So these are enough to attract me back to Bangladesh :D

Is the number of forumers good enough now to start a "SSC Bangladesh roll-call"!

Is the number of forumers good enough now to start a "SSC Bangladesh roll-call"!

I thought this thread fulfilled that purpose? Or would the roll-call be something different?

Anyway we have a had very pleasant increase in our numbers in recent months. Also I am glad to see that while we have had some passionate discussion in recent weeks, they have mostly been very civil. Hopefully we can continue to have debate that is cordial even when we disagree strongly with each other's viewpoint. We can be united in our desire to promote the good of BD no matter our particular stance on different issues may be.

Welcome mash.

What does BFC use these days as a primary trainer (aircraft)? Although it's been a while but I read somewhere that Bangladesh Flying Club as the sole (private) aviation academy was in dire straits. How are things now?

I went to Georgia State University, '07 Graduate. I have few friends at Emory University it's a very expensive school that's why I avoided going there.
