View Full Version : Barcelona - Spain
Mr.OW June 26th, 2003, 12:33 PM Capital of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain. Barcelona stretches along the shores of the Mediterranean between the hills of Monjuic. Vallvidrera and Tibidabo.
One of its principal attractions is the rich architectural heritage.

zulu69 October 10th, 2003, 04:33 PM Barcelona.. WOW what a city! Architecturally the city is hard to beat (IMO it isnt beaten by many). Gaudi's a genius! The skyline is great and has a landmark (the Sagrada Familia which btw isnt completed yet). As a EUROPEAN skyline its pretty much perfect. But i will have to give it a 8.5 .Unbelievable city- culture and art amazing! The only city IMO that you can just walk the streets the entire day and be ALWAYS entertained.

I love Barcelona, absolutely brilliant.
There is so much to do, it's hard to see everything you want within a traditional 1 week holiday.
I visited Barcelona, during "la Merce," which I was told by locals is a celebration of a Spanish patron saint. There was a truly carnival atmosphere. As part of the festival, there was a spectacular fireworks display on the beach, near Barcelonata and Port Colon.
The funicular is a great method by which to reach montjuic where the olympic stadium is situated on a hill- providing spectacular views of the city. The pedestrianised areas around the olympic stadium are also very nice and clean, and would be heaven for people into skateboarding or rollerblading.
Also, nearby is that stunning museum and those famous fountains, which produce a spectacular display every evening. The area around the olympic village is stunning. Visitind the picasso museum is also a must. There is a good chronological display of a lot of his work, which towrards the latter stages of his life started to be abstract, in comparison to his earlier work, the most interesting of which was the "blue phase," which if I can remember correctly was done during the time he spent in Paris, during the early 20th century.
La Ramblas is excellent with all those pet shops and street entertainers. That 1 street alone, can provide days of entertainment. Sagrada Familia was started in 1882 I believe, and the tour guides inside estimate that it will take around 40 years to complete, as they've still to construct the 2 main towers/ spires, the tallest of which I believe will be around 175m in height.
Going up Sagrada Familia is great, and at intervals, there are observation places, which provide stunning views of the city.
I can't wait to return there........................

JDRS February 26th, 2005, 09:11 PM Well I agree Barcelona is a great city, but the skyline has plenty of room for improvement. I love that giant cathedral (sorry I don't know the name) and hope they don't build any skyscrapers near it because it is spectacular on the skyline. Also the Torre Agbar (dildo looking building) reminds me very much of the Swiss re in London. It's good to see plenty of new projects. BTW does Barcelona have a skyscraper cluster/area, or are they scattered about the city? For skyline 7/10

Barcelona is a flat city and the skyline will probably remain as it is, the architectural configuration of the districts that form the city doesn't allow for too many experiments with clusters of tall buildings.. the gothic and modernist legacies are untouchable: the gothic one is spread all over the Old City including the Cathedral (it doesn't have a popular name, just La Catedral), while the Modernist buildings are almost everywhere, from the old pier to the uptown neighborhoods at the mountain's foot, but mostly in the central grid...
the only thing resembling a cluster of tall buildings is the new Forum area (at the left in the panoramic views), and a street at the other side of the city, near the Montjuïc hill, that has three small skyscrapers as well (Carrer Tarragona)... the other tall buildings are isolated and spreaded around the city, though most are near or next the Diagonal avenue that cuts the city in two... with the exception of the two tallest buildings that are by the beach, the Hotel Arts and the Mapfre Tower (nicknamed The Twins cause despite the different facades and structural systems (and designed by different architects) they have the same heights (154 m / 513 ft) and play some kind of a game, framing the sea when seen from the city... and the future tower by Frank O. Ghery that will be placed at the north side of the city, alone in terms of heights but presiding over a huge urban operation for a new high-speed train (TGV) station...
these are the tallest towers, Hotel Arts (the one with a white exoskeleton) and Mapfre Tower (the stack of trays)...

this is the Diagonal Avenue that cuts the city in two (that high black tower at the right of the street was the first skyscraper built in Barcelona, Banc Sabadell (previously Banco Atlántico) in 1968).. at the left in the far background there's the Sagrada Familia:
http://i2.pbase.com/u43/jchambers/upload/27915091.101GVJZRF.jpg
going down the Diagonal avenue there's the Agbar Tower, which apparently is lost in Nowhere Land, but urbanistically it marks a new centrality, a major crossroads that was already in the original masterplan done by Ildefons Cerdà in 1859... this ring road has been a hole for most of the time but there's a new plan for making an underground road connection and turning the ring road into a big green rectangle, a park without traffic... the Agbar will be the tall icon that this place needs to regain some urban amability, and it will be accompanied by another tall building (though 40 m shorter), the Laminated Tower, a complex of cinemas by Zaha Hadid and a new Museum of Design by Oriol Bohigas...
the ring road with the Agbar, known as Plaça de les Glòries (Glories Square), looks like this:
http://ttd.cache.el-mundo.net/fotografia/2004/07/helicoptero/imagenes/foto8.jpg
http://www.elpais.es/elpaismedia/ultimahora/media/200501/21/cultura/20050121elpepucul_3_I_LCO.jpg
and this is the new masterplan:

http://www.bcn.es/urbanisme/barcelona_progres/transformacions/img/glories/placa_pers_r5_c1.jpg
this will be Agbar's partenaire, the Laminated Tower, just at the other side of the street...

the Diagonal ends at the Forum area, next to the sea... this is the Forum area some time ago (now it's almost finished..):

lancetop December 12th, 2005, 01:31 AM Barcelona doesn't need a huge impressive skyline to be a great city. It's architecture is among the best in the world, albeit not by standards in the States and the Middle East and the Pacific Rim.
I bet it's a lot more impressive in person:)

Yeah, I agree with you. As you mentioned the city is great, having examples of incredible architecture all over the city.
I guess Barcelona, is one of those (few) cities that doesn't need an impressive skyline of tall buildings to be well-known and admired all over the world.

I believe the Sagrada Familia is nowhere near the area this picture was taken. By the way that pic is just awesome.

Peshu March 27th, 2006, 07:52 AM Its skyline is great. Not many skyscrapers, but that will surely change in the future. The only other European city that can compare in its awesome layout is Paris.Barcelona is a true candidate for Europes most awesome city.
They should do something about some of those awfull, rundown suburbs though.Apart from that an almost perfect city.10/10.
Bitxofo March 30th, 2006, 02:36 AM ^^Thanks a lot!!
;)
But remember that Paris suburbs are uglier and more problematic than elsewhere...
:runaway:
Peshu March 30th, 2006, 09:23 AM No problemo.Barcelona is just awesome.I just took a browse at the 200 top cities according to the publisher lonely planet.Barcelona is ranked 4th.Just behind Paris,New York and Sydney. It's amazing how other Spaniards under-rate Barcelona so much.Yet in the vast world outside of Spain it is vastly admired and considered to be Spains premiere city by faaaaar.
You won't read a travel mag where Barcelona is not drooled upon.
Mr. Maciek March 30th, 2006, 09:37 AM lol Sydney, what a hole in the ground, if any city is over rated it has to be Sydney... Unless you're gay and enjoy their mardigra's and fruity culture.. Never the less still a great city but definatly not top 3 material
Peshu March 30th, 2006, 09:48 AM Yes and no.Sydney has a harbour and clean blue waters which Melbourne doesn't have. From an aerial view Sydney is amazing.Having said that.Melbourne is a far more elegant and well planned city. And with docklands really starting to take shape.I genuinely believe that Melbourne is going to leave Sydney way behind.Besides those Bondi style beaches are only a short drive from Melbourne i.e Ocean grove,Lorne etc....I've actually just found out that the Melbourne Markets in Footscray which is closing down is going to be converted into a kuxurious residential area. With everything that's going on in Melbourne it will probably end up becoming the almost perfect city.
Justme March 30th, 2006, 10:09 AM ^ In a recent BBC Travel show, the top 20 city destinations outside the UK were listed and Barcelona also came no.1.
Not surprised really, it is such an amazing city.
Mr. Maciek March 30th, 2006, 11:27 AM I must agree with you pesh, when you look past Sydney's 'Glamour' if you could call it that, on topic i'd say barcelona would be a much more desirable place to visit because of its rich historical presence and not to mention its night life

Actually, you don't need skyscrapers to have a skyline. The skyline is effectively any meeting of the sky and earth on the apparent horizon. So all cities, even those without skyscrapers can have a skyline.
And you don't need skyscrapers to have an impressive skyline. The lofty spires of Oxford, or the ancient towers of Rome can provide some of the most breathtaking skylines silhouetted against a sunset ;O)

How is it dated?? I did notice someone said that about the Honolulu skyline in the Honolulu thread. If you have ever been to Barcelona you will see many new highrises along the seafront, and lots of construction going on in the city. BTW, the seafront has a lot of new convention centres and shops.

Stefan88 October 4th, 2007, 02:00 AM I love Barcelona. It's my favourite European city after Paris. I last visited about 7 years ago but I'd love to go back. I had a great time when I was there seeing all the different types of Architecture even though I got food poisoning half way through the trip. Good times though. :)

 Ah, what a silly uneducated comment. Barcelona is one of the most famous cities in the world right now for modern cutting edge architecture. The fact that it has such incredible history as well is just an added benifit.
It also has better nightlife than anything you could ever experience in your country. Barcelona Dated... that is one of the dumbest things you could say.
SFC October 6th, 2007, 09:32 PM Barcelona have very interesting buildings, but in my opinion those building aren´t near. Barcelona need some skyscrapers over 200 meters, but I understand this obssesion of don´t construct over Sagrada Familia Top. Anyway.. 8/10
