View Full Version : Older Photos of African Cities from 1900´s - 1980´s
Matthias Offodile May 4th, 2007, 05:46 PM Popa1980, that´s for you, you asked for it! But let´s extend it beyond the colonial period, simply showing older photos from African cities from 1900´s to 1980´s! The thread is not intended to glorify anything but just to show early urban development of African cities and that´s all! So no colonial debates, please!
I will start with the urban development of the Former Belgian Congo (Zaire)[/SIZE]
All these are cities showing the Former Belgian Congo (Zaire)
Almost all cities were built from scratch......

kulani May 5th, 2007, 06:45 PM When were those Cape Town pics taken?
The pictures were taken in 1982 when the last of Cape Town's high-rises were built. Most of Cape Town's high-rises were constructed in the 60's and 70's. Like Johannesburg no significant construction activity occurred in Cape Town until the current construction boom which started in 1999 till today.

Matthias Offodile May 5th, 2007, 09:45 PM Thanks for the photos Matt. Old Maputo looked good, then again I could say the same thing about the current Maputo.
Yes, you are right! Maputo is still in pretty good shape although the city looked much cleaner and more efficient somehow in the past! I know now why Bob Dylan once sang a song about Maputo. But I am optimistic about Mozambique as a whole.
The opposite is Congo. Most cities I have seen (and I skimmed through so many albums, I didn´t know that so many people keep them) once looked really nice even Kinshasa was appealing and modern if you consider the time (50´s till early 70´s), however, most of the cities have almost all been reduced to shambles or are entirely neglected! I don´t know how to restore a sense of "normality" to them, I ´ve been scratching my head for a while....time will hopefully lead to adequate solutions.

StormShadow May 5th, 2007, 10:42 PM I agree, Maputo did look cleaner and orderly, it look smaller and less populated also. I'm sure the populated must of increased to a higher percent from the time those photos were taken.
I agree with what you said about the cities of the Congo too, and even other cities in SSA. It looked very modern for it's time. I would even dare say it had most cities from around the world beat with it's modernities during it's time. I had some old family encyclopedias that I acquired and most African cities, the major one's looked quite impressive for it's time, in color photos, maybe I'll scan them one day. That really got my attention. Mind you these books were produced around the 1960's. Keeping out northern Africa and South Africa, Luanda, Maputo, Kinshasa, Brazzaville, Harare from the encyclopedia collection really got my attention for those times.

Nixoderm May 7th, 2007, 03:05 PM I think this thread is sad and an insult. We are dwelling in the past by looking at these pictures. All they put is a tear to ones eyes as their govts have f**ked up all of these cities and countries and turned it into a laughing stock!!

Yes, that's Mogadishu back in the day.
The Italian colonial influence on the design of the city's architecture was strong. It truly was a gem before we destroyed it by ourselves. The vast majority of the buildings in the pictures have been destroyed, including the cathedral and the arch :(

Matthias Offodile May 7th, 2007, 10:35 PM Rotten77, very nice indeed! Sorry, but it is a shame what happened to Mogadishu...I never knew that it was so nice! A city with a good foundation to build upon...
Xusein May 7th, 2007, 11:09 PM As far as I know (as an non-native to the area), there is a giant movement to renovate and rehabiliate hundreds of the buildings after the instability ends.
Mogadishu has been relatively quiet for the last few days, after MAJOR fighting (1,600 dead) and an exodus of 350,000 people, who have mostly came back. With all the potential exploding through the roof for the city (and the country), it is a guaranteed boom when we can consider this BS over.

Btw, Nairobi is one of the few African city that has nicely grown over the years. if you compare those pics to today´s pictures, you will see the difference. Nairobi seems to have build well on the foundations it has inherited!:) In general, reasonable town planning is not a foreign word in today´s Nairobi!
Mwafrika May 8th, 2007, 03:07 PM Thanks Matthias, those two are my favourite pix as well. Nairobi has done well over the years, only problem is when you move away from the CBD and into Greater Nairobi... infrastructure has been left to decay although from a recent visit to Nairobi, this has improved quite a lot and the future looks bright:cheers: .

skipperBill February 9th, 2008, 07:22 PM wow nice thread. Its always nice to see pieces of African history.
Axelferis February 9th, 2008, 07:38 PM I think that Abidjan is still the best well constructed African city!!
No one can compare with the lagune skyline!! I hope projects will resatart to design the Abidjan of 21 st century!!
Matthias Offodile February 10th, 2008, 12:27 AM The Time Magazine featured in an article called "The Sages of Abidjan" the following interesting piece of news
(...)The project is a $2 billion "African Riviera" development intended to make Abidjan the tourist capital of the continent. By 1980, the development is scheduled to have 15 hotels, four shopping centers, a 27-hole golf course, housing for 60,000 people of all income levels, and a zoo that will no doubt feature flotillas of crocodiles.
...during the heady 1970´s , the sky was just the limit for Côte d´ivoire...
The Mega-project of building an African Riviera:cheers:
bad quality pic but maybe you get a vague idea of the project´s heroic dimension
http://www.abjmail.com/phpwebgallery/galleries/SOIREES_ABIDJANAISE/HOTEL/HOTEL_IVOIRE/PHOTO_BATIMENT/00031.jpg
PS: Imagine investing $2 billion into a real estate project in the 1970´s (!!), not even Dubai made this in the 70´s or any Asian country duriing that time!!!!
Matthias Offodile February 10th, 2008, 12:37 AM If you strain your eyes and read what it written on the board, it says that the lagoon project was destined for 120 000 (!!) people and not just 60 000 what the TIME magazine said....., just imagine it, Abidjan in the early/mid 70´s when the project was first annouced had just something around 600 000 inhabitants.
Abidjan, la perle de la lagune!

Thats when things started unravelling for IC. It got a bit ahead of itself and rather than showing some financial prudence it continued to borrow loans for such prestige projects. Because it was pro-Western it always got the funding. When commodities started to plummet in the mid 70s it wasnt prepared and they hadnt saved money during the boom era. Disaster.

True, so so true....but most of the cities were sparsely populated in former times, you have to bear this in mind.:)

Ambassador hotel is the only 'skyscraper' in the pic if you can call it that. The park at the bottom of the pic has largely disappeared under tower blocks that make up loita street today eg. barclays plaza.

Looks completely different today (apart from westminster/standard charter building to the left, I cant recognise most buildings. Even the street design looks different). I think I also see lord Delamere's statue in the middle of the street.
Thanx Mwafrika.

Matthias Offodile March 27th, 2009, 09:11 PM This video will show you the pre-war city of Huambo (ex-Nova Lisboa)...in central Angola....it is good when you understand Portuguese for the video as all information given is in Portuguese..if not you can listen to the music....but again you will see a lot of agriculture and cityscapes....you will also the exhibition where numerous international brands like BMW were present...and also made in Angola products..bear in mind these were the early 1970´s, so design was not what you are used to today but it is still very nice..you will also see Huambo international motorrace..you will also see the active industrial sector of Huambo in the video..so watch the video till the end..very informative

Lydon March 29th, 2009, 01:12 PM I really cannot wait to see Johannesburg reformed to its former glory, just this time for all people of all races and cultures to enjoy it equally! I despise the Apartheid regime, but one can't deny that the Apartheid government knew how to run a city. It's exciting seeing delapitated buildings being bought, refurbished and resold. Once that is complete, new skyscrapers can start to take shape amidst the old.

but it is pitiful that African cities seem even more dirty and less developed than those african citie in old pictures.
African cities were more advance than Chinese and most Asian cities up to 1980.
Africa lost a whole decade of development and regressed a lot in the 80's and early 90's
domtoren July 30th, 2009, 04:56 PM Hola, VERY surprising that African cities were then everything but underdeveloped... Lourenço Marques and Nova Lisboa look here more developed than Lisboa in Portugal which I visited in 1984/85, big parts of Lisbon were old and regularly buildings had to be evacuated or tumbled down due to lack of maintenance.
A puty wars and regression destroyed all this in Africa... WHY did Africans start stupid wars instead of developing their countries, the continent does have more natural resources than we have in Europe!!!

How do you develope a country with very few educated people? But now there are no excuses what so ever.
and your country ( Portugal) Built Angola for themselves not for Angolan people.
you expect the country to build itself after you forcefully made them slaves for 100s of years and left the country to massive illitaeretes and you helped destroy what you left.
Your conclusion is nothing but hypocrisy.

however, I indeed think that African should rethink twice why such a pitiful regress happened after Afican themself came into power and European left them so many modern cities and infrastructures.
one ethnic who doesn't rethink their past can not win the future.

buddy,
European are not genius .
Nobody taught european how to build such modern infrastructure ,but eurpean still managed to build so many modern infrastructures and cities in africa with they hard study and work.
European didn't taught Japan and China how to build modern civilizaiton, when west countries opened the door of Japan and CHina with gunboats, but Japan and CHina still learned how to build modern civilizatin with their hard work.
why can't African learn how to maitain them with their hard study?
BTW,
how to run a country can not be "taught" by others.
Matthias Offodile August 1st, 2009, 03:09 PM Badguy2000, very well said!
if you look into old news archives and see how positive news Africa got in the 60´s and 70´s (post-colonial period), you wouldn´t believe it it the same continent. But we simply screwed it and we just got ourselves to blame for it!

Its all our fault, independence should have been delayed for a few years....some countries did but to no avail, the pressure from the Africans was to much so they were handed independence,Kenyatta delayed independence from 1960-63,sending hundreds of Kenyans to western univesities to gain expertise but the local population and some in his inner core couldnt wait any more...:ohno:
indistad August 1st, 2009, 03:38 PM But there are some African countries that got their independence early and still prospered like Botswana, while others like Zimbabwe got theirs late (and inheriting a pretty good industrial economy with good infrastructure) and still mess things up.
I don't want to sound racist, but I wonder if culture plays an important role in this? Africans seem to always fall to these big men dictatorship that is ruthless and very corrupt and the whole political system doesn't see the nation-state as a project, instead as an object of plunder. This happens in a lot of other third world countries, but why was it almost uniformly the case in the whole continent?
With the exception of Botswana and South Africa (we can't conclude now, Mugabe was pretty decent in the 1980s), it seems that its a recurrent pattern that is hard to break. Which countries in Africa today is a working liberal democracy?

mwanamwiwa that´s what I am saying, Africa would have been better off if the countries became indpendent by 1990´s, especially after the Cold War era. it would have then been like in Macau or Hong Kong!
Anyway, let´s just keep it a picture thread and keep it free from endless political debate!:) it took quite a while to look for the pics
MBA-Congo August 1st, 2009, 04:14 PM All of those pics are of Zaire in the 70's and early 80's, Black Africans were building their country but were not partaking in the global economy when that crashed most were ill prepared and thus started to fall apart. Commodity prices paid for most infrastructural development. It has nothing to do with culture, culture evolves to the gradual change around it. Only a fool will not read the manual that came with the car.
Matthias Offodile August 1st, 2009, 04:14 PM Yupes, are these pics from 1970´s? They look quite 70´s style..very nice to look at them!

DID YOU JUST SAY DELAY?????:bash::bash::bash::bash:
May be for your country , but Congo we shoulf have kicked them out a long time ago.
No Mwana, I'm glad we kicked out those Racist scums( Belgians Colonists) . At the time of independence in 1960. Congo had only 12 college educated people only. and everything was run by whites. blacks did only slave labor.
In British and French colonies you guys had education , Not in Belgian colonies.
All Congolese Doctors, Engineers, Professors, Electricians, Archictects were trained by Congolese themselves. That's afrter independence, and we had some of the best ones in the 70s
The wars are our fault, i'm not blaming anyone. But they Euros helped destroy countries as well.
When you support my enemy, you are my enemy.
