About architecture only, I don't really like the mosque, the minaret doesn't fit the gothic church I think.

I share the same view with Exarchus. A several minarets might look better but only one minaret looks disturbing...

I think the minaret should have been built in the western gothic style rather.

This isn't a good mix of style I think. I also don't think the gothic style goes well with islam, I don't know why, but that's how I feel it.

I agree with you. A Professor from Austria said " when we deffen Vienna agaist Ottomans, we did good. But we lost the chance to see the influence of gothic art at Islam".

From http://www.cypnet.co.uk/

The cathedral of St. Nicholas / Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque is the largest medieval building in Famagusta/Gazimağusa and was commenced in 1300 AD. It must be noted that the great cathedrals of the Middle Ages often took more than 100 years to complete, so was St. Nicholas was completed about 1400.

The Gothic style of architecture closely resembles closely the great cathedral of Rheims in Paris, France. Similarly, St. Sophia in Nicosia (now Selimiye Mosque) and Bellapais Abbey all seem to be the work of French architect, and this is understandable when one realises that the Kings of Cyprus from 1190 to 1489 were all of the French Lusignan dynasty who, at least in their churches, "Frenchified" Cyprus.

The main facade of the building is the west front and this is shown in the picture. There are three large gabled and canopied doorways as can be seen in the picture, the vast amount of carved stone work being very impressive.

Above the main central door is a large wheel window set in decorative tracery, a common feature of French cathedrals and known asa rose window. There is a similar rose window in the refectory hall at the Bellapais Abbey. The upper parts of the two towers suffered damage during the Ottoman bombardment of 1571 and when the Ottoman Turks captured the town from the Venetians, the cathedral was converted into a Mosque and a minaret was added.

The full name of the cathedral is the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque. In accordance with Muslim religion all images of the human form in stone, fresco, or in stained glass windows were removed or plastered over. However, all aspects of the Gothic tracery have been preserved. the canopied doorways of the west front are typical of French cathedrals. No doubt the niches on either side of the porch contained stone statues of Biblical saints as in Notre Dame, Paris. This style of ecclesiastical architecture is known as the "Decorative Period".

The interior is of course a Muslim prayer hall, the floor being covered with carpets, and all visitors must go round with the Imam. The main hall in a church is known as the nave, and here the Lusignans were crowned as kings of Cyprus.

Tradition claims that they also received the crown of Jerusalem, as by about 1350 the Crusaders had failed to take Palestine and so these French knights came to Cyprus to set up a Jerusalem monarchy in exile!

The lancet windows were probably decorated with stained glass but it was unsafe to have wide windows as Cyprus suffers from severe earthquakes. Also because of this, the nave had to be strengthened with flying buttresses.

In 1571, altars and tombs were swept away and all frescoes were plastered over but the guide will show visitors a few medieval tombs that have survived, in the north aisle.

I guess this is the only gothic mosque in the Islamic world, I agree with you about the minaret...and in the future they may turn it to a museum like Hagia Sophia..(no offense, this is my personal idea)
Northern Cyprus is so beautiful, it is so sad that no other country except Turkey recognizes it as a country...beautiful people, beautiful climate, beautiful settings...etc..

The gothic mosque is incredible.

personally i like the minaret addition - it is just so damn unusual. as someone earlier said, it is perhaps the only gothic 'mosque' in the world - and hence, an architectural treasure.

Really, it's one of the most unusual buildings I've ever seen.

Here is where architecture begins to reveal the history of a place -

the stone itself tells a story . . .

wonderful.

a very beautiful island too.

Its pathetic to see that all the Mosques have Turkish or Turkish Cypriot flags. I thought God is universal... I really dont like nationalistic symbols combined with religion - that is not a logical statement. Also, I did not see those symbols attached to mosques in Turkey so why in Turkish Cyprus? Is god misused in order to justify separation and wars? Religion should be only about the relation between an individual and god - the state should not intervene or use it for its purposes.

It seems that the nationalistic propaganda in both Greek as well as Turkish Cyprus prevents people to really use their rational mind in order to make reunification and reconciliation happen. History happened, people now should look into the future and I believe that the UN plan was the best thing that could have happened to Cyprus - but it did not work out because of the nationalistic propaganda in Greek Cyprus. Too bad.

Otherwise, thanks for the beautiful pictures. It is a very nice place indeed.

Actually mate, i agree with your sentiment, but i think you'll find many turkish flags flying within the mosque grounds of Istanbul.

You are right that Greeks and Turks should stop with those flags on mosques and churches, it is also strange that there are plenty of falgs of Greece and Turkey on the island, whereas I would expect only the flags of North and South Cyprus. Did you know that the flag of Southern Cyprus was designed by a Turk, it is quite ironic:)

Göçtur Turizm 3 otel yapacak

Göçtur Turizm, yurtiçi ve yurtdışında başlattığı 3 otel inşaatını 2008 yılında tamamlayıp hizmete açmayı planlıyor. Göçtur Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı Mustafa Göçen, 2008 yılında tamamlanacak otel projelerinin ardından halka açılacaklarını ve buradan gelecek yeni gelirlerle yeni yatırımlar yapacaklarını söyledi.

2 yıl önce Sait Halim Paşa Yalısı'nı 49 yıllığına kiralayarak faaliyet alanlarını genişlettiklerini anlatan Göçen, yeni yapacakları 3 proje hakkında şunları söyledi:

"Projelerimizden ilki 40 milyon Euro yatırımla oluşturulan Kıbrıs'taki konsept otelimiz. İnşaatının yüzde 80'i tamamlandı.

NORTH CYPRUS has a great potential for TOURISM.I think more than the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Here in Germany many travel agencies are offering now trips to North Cyprus.I think in a few years North Cyprus could be a great destination for west european travelers. And it could be also a new Las Vegas, because of the many casinos there :).I hope we will get ARAB INVESTMENT there.

Turkish Cypriots prefer two separate states

Turkish Cypriots with first-hand experience of the war-divided island’s violent past and anxious present believe the best way to maintain peace is by living in two separate states.

While U.N.-mediated talks for a settlement for the island of Cyprus proceed, Turkish Cypriots with first-hand experience of the war-divided island’s violent past and anxious present believe the best way to maintain peace is by living in two separate states.

They quote concerns for physical safety and lack of trust as the reasons for preferring a federal solution. The talks will continue Aug. 6 between Greek Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat aiming to establish a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality.

Before clarifying his views on the future of Cyprus, Kamil Meriç, 61, from Atlılar village shows a picture of his family – his wife Fatma and five children between the ages of 1.5 and 6 years. The photo is hanging on the wall of a museum commemorating the killing of Turkish Cypriot civilians by Greek Cypriot forces at Muratağa, Sandallar and Atlılar villages in August 1974.

“I don’t want anyone to go through the same experiences as I did,” Meriç started, pointing at the picture. “If we try to wipe away the events of the past and live together like before 1974, in the future someone else will experience what I did,” he told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review.

Meriç is guiding visitors in the old primary school near the mass grave. The building is dedicated to the memory of the 89 civilian victims of the three villages who were killed two weeks after a military junta in Greece declared “Enosis,” union with Cyprus, prompting Turkey’s intervention. Enosis was based on the ideal of purely Greek Cyprus, which would have left few, if any rights for the island’s Turkish minority. After Meriç was taken as a prisoner along with 50 other men, his family was shot, burned and buried near the village.

He said he hoped the world would recognize the Turkish Cypriot state. “We hope to stay where we are today, with guarantees from Turkey. There has now been peace for 35 years. Greek Cypriots and the world should recognize us. Let us all live in peace and never suffer again.”

Seeking free movement:

Yaşar, a 59-year-old taxi driver from Nicosia, said that the future Cyprus should be formed of two separate states with a clearly defined, yet an open border. “If there is a solution then it should be a federation of two states, which are separately managed, but represent one country to the outside world,” said Yaşar, who only gave his first name.

A clear border is needed because that would make Turkish Cypriots feel safe, Yaşar said. “Before the Turkish operation in 1974, Turkish Cypriots experienced so many things. The 1960s and early 1970s were terrible. I used to drive to my family’s village in Paphos and be stopped by the Greek police seven times each way, be questioned and beaten up,” he said. “There should be free movement. We should be able to cross to the other side like today. Turkish forces came here to protect us. We now feel safe. I don’t want them to leave,” he said.

Yaşar is also keen to tell about a touching reunion with his Greek Cypriot friends in 2003 after the border opened. Nowadays he visits the Greek side frequently. “After so many years I saw them again, we used to work together. The meeting was very emotional, I can’t describe it. I had thought of them so many times, missed them so much,” he said.

Mehmet Dolmacı, a 40-year-old tourism professional, noted his opinion on the solution is based on historical events and on the present day embargo. Dolmacı was born in a Turkish Cypriot enclave in Nicosia where he lived until 1974. Today he is the president of the Northern Cyprus Hoteliers’ Association.

“There should be two independent states, which for the outside world is one Cyprus. Now there is peace on the island but no solution, so we want one,” Dolmacı said.

He said he would prefer no solution over a solution that would require him to live together with Greek Cypriots. “Greek Cypriots say we can live together, but I can’t trust them. After all, it was their community that started the division in 1963,” he said.

The Greek Cypriot government’s efforts to maintain the isolation of Turkish Cyprus is an indication that the Greek Cypriot side is reluctant to share power, Dolmacı said. “Greek Cypriot embassies abroad have called our cooperation partners in Italy and Romania not to send tourists here. They are trying to cut off our connection to the outside world and prevent us from having an income. I cannot trust a state that is negotiating for a solution but then doing its utmost to keep us isolated.”

Lobby a problem:

Dervişe Çerkez Güryel is an advocate who calls for a more constructive and sincere approach to the peace talks by the Greek Cypriots on the island and abroad. She would like to see Turkish Cyprus recognized as an independent state. “The reason why I do not want to live together with Greek Cypriots is the history from the 1950s to the 1960s, and that the 1974 peace operation has gone down in history as an invasion rather than intervention as it was.”

Güryel said the opening of the border in 2003 revealed also some uncomfortable realities. “We discovered there was still extreme hostility against Turkish Cypriots. Turkish Cypriots were blamed for traffic accidents when they obviously were not guilty and a lot of beatings have gone on,” she said.

Güryel, who grew up in the United Kingdom, said the Greek Cypriot lobby overseas is eroding the credibility of the peace talks. “The Greek side needs to be retrained to be able to accept some sort of negotiation. I don’t find the peace talks very sincere.”
