tanzirian May 8th, 2007, 09:45 PM Those blue decorative accents around the outside and the track around the field are both new to me. Although I would have preferred that this stadium be kept for cricket in view of the upcoming World Cup, nonetheless I have to compliment the improvements.
gohorns May 8th, 2007, 09:51 PM ^^ Yes, moving cricket to mirpur was a poor decision in my opinion.
Anyway, I've been reading a lot about some drastic improvements to the mirpur stadium..are these improvements actually visible from the outside and from the stands or are they just the dressing rooms, the press areas, and improved field drainage? it would be nice to see some pictures of the "improved" mirpur stadium.

mirzazeehan May 8th, 2007, 11:14 PM Amazing pics Tmac!
Taking cricket away from this stadium was one of the worst decisions ever by the National sports council....I wish they could bring it back.Mirpur stadium might be good ,but I hate the location and its so far away from the city center.Bangabandhu National Stadium was perfect!
tanzirian May 8th, 2007, 11:27 PM Mirza, if you ever have the time, I would love to see what the surroundings of Mirpur Stadium are like today as well as what highrises are in that area (in one of the pics above there is something going up next to Grameen Bank).
Zaki May 8th, 2007, 11:44 PM Great pics. They should really improve the exterior of the the Bangabandhu stadium. The interior is fine but the exterior looks horrible, even though its better than before. They should make it look more modern, might help.
As for cricket moving to mirpur, it may seem like a bad decision at the moment but if they can (and i doubt it) follow the plans and improve the entire area and signinficantly modernize it, then at the end of the day, i think it will be a good decision. The area around Bangabandhu is extremely crowded and only going to get worse and cricket drawing such huge crowds, i think its better to put it somewhere where there is more room for change in the long run. They just have to execute the idea properly.
tareq79 May 9th, 2007, 08:36 AM I am sorry too,not to see cricket in BNS. I enjoyed some international and domestic matches there back in late 90s.
Actually its not like BCB just decided to leave BNS and go to Mirpur...rather they fought to be there, they shared it for a few years with football (BFF).But there was a real fuss about overlapping with seasons and eventually they lost it by some beurocratic debates...BFF has a lot of big gigs you know.
But to avoid crowd, moving to Mirpur is not the solution, as Mirpur is very crowded now, not a bare place like 10 year ago it was. But I was happy to see Mirpur stadium last night on TV. It looks nice and festive after all the beautification done.
You know the inauguration of next CWC will be held in BD, and to host it BNS is selected primarily. BCB will borrow it from BFF, but it is still 4 years away...a lot may happen by 2011. I would love to see the inauguration with Motijheel skyline above.
meghnarmajhi May 9th, 2007, 10:06 AM Bongobondhu National Stadium was originally constructed for cricket. Since football had always been the most favorite sport of Bangladeshis. So after independence, the stadium was used for soccer and cricket used to be played in outer stadium. When cricket gained popularity, we felt the need for another stadium. Why Mirpur?
1) No space in the city.
2) Worst traffic jams when there was a good game.
3) Hooliganism of indisciplined supporters of defeated teams.
tareq79 May 9th, 2007, 10:16 AM Ya, it was.
And BNS is the only stadium to host the first tests of two countries:in 1955 for Pakistan and in 1999 for Bangladesh. India were the guest on both occassions.
Tmac May 9th, 2007, 09:33 PM Not a stadium but a sporting venue nonetheless..BMA Bhatiary Golf & Country Club in chittagong.

tareq79 May 10th, 2007, 10:28 AM Is the India - Bangladesh match today being played in Mirpur? I thought reconstruction of the stadium was still ongoing? Or have they finished?
Yap.
According to TV news last night, BCB has a swanky plan to make this a very modern venue with a lot more improvements to come within next 6 months. In that sense, 50% of the job is finished by now. But the facilities available now fairly satisfies ICC requirements. So they kicked off there again today...

Tmac May 14th, 2007, 05:48 PM An article about Chittagong Stadium in Hindustan Times.
Chittagong stadium is ecologists' delight
The unique setting of the Bir Shrestha Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium where the third India-Bangladesh One-day International will be played on Tuesday will please environmentalists immensely as a thick green cover surrounds the venue.
As international cricket returns to this port city after five months, first-time visitors to Chittagong were welcomed by large green fields and tall trees next to the stadium. It reminds one of the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in central Sri Lanka that is surrounded by a thick green jungle.
There is sparse habitation around the stadium, and the people who live nearby are fishermen.
The stadium is the second international venue in the city. The old venue, MA Aziz Stadium, hosted eight Test matches and 10 ODIs before being discarded.
The venue for Tuesday's ODI is not as big as the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. Nor does it have as many facilities as in Dhaka. But there are a few aspects that stand. The foremost is the green settings, with large fields and tall trees adding to the stadium's scenic beauty.
The stands of this stadium give the impression of being old, but it is not. It was built specifically for cricket and opened when Bangladesh hosted the under-19 World Cup in 2004. It is one of the cricket-specific stadiums built in each of the six divisions of the country when the World Cup was held.
A highlight of these six stadiums is that each one has an indoor practice facility. The Bir Shrestha Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium has three artificial indoor pitches.
There are just a few concrete buildings around the stadium. Inside, the stands are not tall; the maximum height is 13 steps. There is a 100-metre stretch on one side of the field that has no stands at all, just fencing to keep spectators away from the field.
The tallest building in the stadium is the pavilion, which houses the two dressing rooms. The umpires and the match referee also sit there besides the dignitaries.
The media box is on the opposite side of the pavilion. Behind it, one can only see vast fields and nothing else.

tareq79 May 15th, 2007, 11:15 AM Situated about half-an-hour outside the city centre, the Chittagong Divisional Stadium was one of the five purpose-built cricket grounds established in the run-up to the 2004 Under-19 World Cup. It was finally granted full international status in January 2006, ahead of Sri Lanka's visit to the country.

tareq79 June 24th, 2007, 10:55 AM Great find, Tmac. The giant screens in Mirpur and Ctg were installed just days before the BD-Ind match.
But I am a bid sad to learn that the inauguration of the next cricket world cup (2011) is finalized to be held here in Mirpur discarding previous decision about BNS. I'd like to see it under Motizheel skyline.
All the 6 matches will be played here as well. All these were finalized by the world cup committee (by all 4 countries) in Pakistan a couple of days ago.
Zaki June 25th, 2007, 04:54 PM Mirpur stadium is starting to look great. How is the work on the exterior going though because the last time i saw it, the exterior still looked pretty bad.
khalek August 8th, 2007, 02:48 AM On 11 April 2005, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan announced agreement about the allocation of games, though no decision on the location of semi-finals and final has been made[8]. Three months later, PCB director Abbas Zaidi confirmed that India had been chosen to host the final, while Pakistan and Sri Lanka would host the semi-finals.[9] This will be the first time Sri Lanka will host a World Cup semi-final, after hosting two group games during the 1996 World Cup. The opening ceremony will take place in Bangladesh.[10]
India: 22 games (including the final)
Venues[4]: Eden Gardens (Kolkata), Feroz Shah Kotla (Delhi), M. Chinnaswamy Stadium (Bangalore), M. A. Chidambaram Stadium (Chennai), Punjab C.A. Stadium (Mohali), Sardar Patel Stadium (Ahmedabad), Vidarbha C.A. Ground (Nagpur), Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai).
The final in Mumbai.
Pakistan: 14 games (including one semi-final)
Venues: Arbab Niaz Stadium (Peshawar), Gaddafi Stadium (Lahore), Iqbal Stadium (Faisalabad), Multan Cricket Stadium (Multan), National Stadium (Karachi), Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium (Rawalpindi)
One semi-final at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Sri Lanka: 9 games (including one semi-final)
Venues: R. Premadasa Stadium (Colombo), Sinhalese S.C. (Colombo)
One semi-final at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Bangladesh: 6 games (including the opening ceremony and opening match)
Venue (one from three will be picked): Bangabandhu National Stadium (Dhaka; the stadium was officially handed over to the football federation in March 2005), Narayanganj Osmani Stadium (Fatullah), Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium (Mirpur

Tmac January 7th, 2008, 08:06 PM DU to have 'high-class' cricket venue on its playground
Bangladesh Cricket Board to fund and supervise project
The authorities of Dhaka University (DU) are planning to develop a high-class cricket venue on its central playground.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that usually hosts cricket matches on different university playgrounds will fund and supervise the facelift project at DU.
Earlier in November, BCB signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect with DU.
http://www.thedailystar.net/photos/2008-01-07__city05.jpg
The central playground of DU, one of the most prominent grounds in the city, will be turned into a high-class cricket ground.
The five-year agreement gives BCB the responsibility to overhaul the central playground of DU and turn it into a quality cricket ground. Though the scheme is still at its early stage, DU officials believe that it would take a few months to spruce up the ground.
The vast span of caringly maintained green along with decent facilities of the DU central playground make it one of the most prominent grounds in the city. The playground encompasses for sections -- a swimming pool in the northwestern area, a football ground on the southern side, a gymnasium on the outer ring past the football ground and a cricket ground in the northeastern section.
To modernise the cricket ground located in the northeastern section, the BCB will set up a modern cricket pitch along with stands for spectators, dressing rooms, a media centre for press officials and toilets in the eastern side of the venue. Modern practice turfs will also be included.
"The BCB regularly hosts seasonal games, especially under-19 and under-16 games on this ground. Therefore, they want this ground to be a more apt cricket turf," said Abdur Rashid, a DU official working at the swimming pool stadium.
"Both players [participating in BCB-hosted games] and DU students will be benefited from this agreement," he said.
Shahrier Rashid, a student of Political Science Department at DU, said, "It would be great because we would be able to play on real cricket pitches and get the feeling of playing in real cricketing conditions."
General students were however concerned and doubtful over the students' access to the ground after the overhauling project is complete.
"It all sounds good, but the question remains -- whether we would be able to use the ground as freely as we do now," said Saumitra Saha, a student of International Relations Department at DU.
DU authorities assured that the students would have full access to the facility as they did before.
"BCB will use the ground only during their matches. The ground will be available for general use at any other time," said Prof Dr AFM Yusuf Haider, pro vice chancellor of DU.
"Our ultimate goal is to renovate the ground to a level where it can host international matches. On top of it all, we want the ground to be a place where any youngster would feel at home and enjoy a good sporting spirit," he said.
Mahmudur Rahman, chief executive officer of BCB, could not be reached despite several attempts. However, sources at BCB told this correspondent that they are still reviewing the plans and fund for the project is yet to be allocated.

nayeem007 April 30th, 2009, 06:49 AM Now that we have got 2 more matches for the 2011 cricket world cup, I think we should have couple matches in Chittagong. Opening ceremony at National Stadium in Mothijheel, quarter finals in Mirpur Cricket Stadium and maybe the league matches at Chittagong... this will boost tourism and at the end of the event, we will have three world class venues with all the facilities!

Three stadiums to get Tk 1.52b facelift before World Cup Cricket in 2011
FHM Humayan Kabir
The government will spend nearly Tk 1.52 billion on the renovation of country's three key stadiums before hosting the World Cup Cricket in 2011, officials said Monday.
The Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS), Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium in Mirpur and Fatullah Osmani Stadium in Narayanganj would get the facelift ahead of the grand cricket tournament, a youth and sports ministry official told the FE.
"We'll spend over Tk 1.52 billion on renovation of the three major stadiums to make those attractive to the cricket-lovers across the world. The renovated stadiums would also uphold the country's image globally," he said.
The official said they hoped Bangladesh would get huge return from the investments, as the new-look of the stadiums would attract more foreign tourists and cricket fans.
Bangladesh would co-host the World Cup Cricket (WCC) 2011 with India and Sri Lanka.
The inaugural ceremony of the WCC would be held at BNS in Dhaka on February 19 in 2011.
Bangladesh would be home to eight matches out of the 49 games of the world cup including the opening match and two quarterfinals, expected to take place at Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium and Fatullah Osmani Stadium.
The WCC matches will be spread out as India will host 29 games including one quarterfinal, one semifinal and the final, and Sri Lanka will be home to 12 games including one semi-final.
Director of the grounds and facilities department of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Shafiqur Rahman Munna said the galleries, press-boxes, score-boards and display screens, approach roads and other facilities of the stadiums would be made world-class.
UNB Adds: ECNEC has approved three stadium development projects worth Tk 1.52 billion (152 crore) to facilitate smooth holding of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 in Bangladesh.
The development of the stadiums are among five development projects worth Tk 5.84 (584 crore) which was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council at its meeting at the NEC Tuesday.
Briefing reporters, Planning Minister AK Khandker said Tk 2.93 billion (293 crore) of the total project costs would be met from national exchequer while the rest Tk 291 crore would be spent from foreign aid.
Prime Minister and ECNEC chairperson Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting, attended by senior cabinet ministers and senior officials concerned.
The projects are maintenance and development of Bangabandhu National Stadium at a cost of Tk 310 million (31 crore) to prepare the venue for the World Cup inaugural session, maintenance and development of Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur at a cost of Tk 640 million (64 crore) to convert it as an ICC standard stadium and maintenance and development of Narayanganj Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium (Fatulla) at a cost of Tk 570 million (57 crore) to prepare it as an alternative venue of the World Cup Cricket.

runtings October 1st, 2009, 02:21 PM Due to public and polticial pressure, World Cup matches will now take place at Chittagong Divisional stadium instead of Fatullah Osmani Stadium, which will now be a reserve stadium.
Personally I think Chittagong Divisional stadium is not large enough, in its present state, to accommodate the size of crowds expected at World Cup games. Last I remember, one quarter of the ground didn't have a stand and was just an open field (see Google Earth pic above). Even with a stand there, still not big enough. They need to put another tier of stand ontop of the present stands. I would of gone for the MA Aziz stadium in Chittagong which has a bigger capacity and has permanent floodlights so some day/night matches can happen during the tournament in Chittagon.
The major renovation that all our stadiums should get are roofs. This is protect the fans from the sun and eliminate the rubbish temporary bambo stick roofs that we put up which will look so poor for a World Cup. The original plans of Mirpur when converting to a cricket stadium included some sort of roof.

Having cricket matches in Chittagong is a good decision. It will help develop infrastructure (not just stadium but practise grounds, hotels, connecting roads, transporation etc) over there. Moreover it will be a big boost for tourism as Cox's Bazar and Hilltracts are 2 of the most scenic areas in Bangladesh...
I agree that the stadiums need to get renovated, but BCB should have enough money due to TV contracts to do that..

Yes, but I understand some ceremonies (opening? closing?) are going to be held there.
While I don't know the politics behind it, I don't see why cricket could not be played at this stadium as well as football (soccer)? Doesn't this stadium have the largest capacity? Aren't there equal amount of cricket followers/fans as football, if not more?

Cricket needs a dedicated pitch, in fact several of them on the field with constant look-after. Thats the reason why soccer & cricket can't be played @ the same stadium unless you have a long span of time between two different games and willing to spend money to construct the pitch every time it gets destroyed from a football match.

Thats the reason why soccer & cricket can't be played @ the same stadium unless you have a long span of time between two different games and willing to spend money to construct the pitch every time it gets destroyed from a football match.
Well, they play both cricket and soccer in Eden Gardens, Kolkata, don't they?
Subho February 2nd, 2011, 06:04 PM no, cricket and soccer are not played in the same stadium in Kolkata......
King Nothing February 2nd, 2011, 06:29 PM Yes exactly the 2 sports are very different. Football boot studs can completely destroy a cricket pitch. So its a good thing they decided to build a more modern stadium for cricket in Mirpur and separated stadiums for cricket and football. And yes the 2 sports are equally popular in BD.

If I'm not mistaken Eden Gardens used to be used for both cricket and football. Since I haven't kept myself updated on Kolkata, there are many more stadiums in Kolkata, each dedicated to a particular sport.

Yes, but which one has greater capacity? If it is the old one, seems to me that the cricket folks lost out to the footballers. :)
nayeem007 February 2nd, 2011, 09:15 PM ^^
I think the capacity at BNS and Mirpur is pretty much the same. After the recent renovation (where individual seats have been made compulsary by ICC advisory board), BNS and Mirpur can only accomodate around 25-30,000 spectators. Details available in the following Worldcup thread:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1312453
Also, BNS is used for athletics/ Track & field outside of football.

It was once a dry, hard as rock outfield, complementing the bouncy matting wicket fitted on its grassless face. Cuts and bruises to the players were a very common incident. The so-called dressing rooms were long stools beneath the media box of the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Commonly known as the Mirpur Outer Stadium, it was the figurative death-valley for cricketers, who played in the lower leagues (second, third and qualifying round).
When the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium became the home of cricket, matches stopped in this field and in time, it became even more deserted.
But after more than two years when the Tigers began their World Cup training on that same meadow yesterday, it looked like a green heaven amidst a concrete jungle.
And for those used to seeing the dusty area, it was a huge surprise and certainly it caught everyone's eyes.
So what actually happened here?
It has been transformed into an excellent practice ground for the GP-BCB National Cricket Academy with headquarters next door. The ground was developed in the last six months.
Once you enter, the green carpet speaks for itself. The grassy outfield is as good as any international ground. Anyone who will see this ground for the first time, would not even know what this ground was only two years ago.
A total of eleven wickets have been developed, four on two corners of the ground, with three in the centre. There are houses on two sides but the dwellers need not worry of a cricket ball hitting them as the fences surrounding the ground are high enough.
Till now the Academy, Under-15, the women's national cricket team and some Premier League clubs have used the ground. With the World Cup coming up, the Bangladesh cricket team practiced for the first time at that ground with a lot of satisfaction.
The only blemish was the height (or the lack of it) of the net structure that however can easily be solved.
“I came here earlier for some club practice. They can improve the environment around the ground. I think this is the best practice facility in Bangladesh, in terms of ground and wicket," said Tigers skipper Shakib Al Hasan yesterday.
It is practically the best practice ground in Dhaka, and any player would love to train there. With a heavy cricket schedule ahead, many feel that BCB should plan diligently so that the ground is not overused.

I was at BNS(Bangabandhu National Stadium) area few weeks back and the entire outer stadium was transformed under army supervision. They have removed hawkers and completely rebuilt all the entrances, expanded the sidewalks, made grassed medians and planted flower plants on both side. Also, there is a new parking lot right outside of the stadium.. Moreover, the whole area is going through extensive road carpeting.

That's good to hear..... inside the stadium, to me SBNS looks fine but just too small for a city like Dhaka. Also the grass looks a little shabby.
But hey, are they setting up stage and decoration yet? (for the opening ceremony)

ajprobashi February 9th, 2011, 04:08 PM please dont say things like that. Alhumdulillah us Bangladeshis are better off without being part of Pakistan. Muslim League was created in Dhaka in 1906 which eventually lead to the creation of Pakistan but today Pakistanis don't appreciate that. Pakistanis think
We have enough Pakistanis living in Bangladesh and enjoying the security (which is not the best but yet better) in Bangladesh which they don't have in Pakistan.
I'm not an AL or BNP supporter as a matter of fact I hate both parties especially AL so I'm NOT pro-Indian either.

Hey guyz, i think its alright. That guy has spoken his heart but like most of the pakistani he is unaware of the reason and history of Liberation war.We will see this kind of feelings more & more where the pakistanis will repent for losing Bangladesh because the way Bangladesh is progressing keeping the freedom of speech and democracy and the way our judiciary system kicking the "Butt" of sharia law and dismissing all kinds of amendments that gave Bangladesh a fundamentalist status for a while, the way our general muslims perform the softer & more moderate version of Islam, it is only becoming a dream for the pakistanis with everyday passing by. We are proud of Bangladesh & we are glad we came out of the grip of pakistan. But we also have to stand firm againts radicalism and teh moududi version of Islam, otherwise, one day we may also have to repent like him. But for now, no need to abuse him.:) ^^

Very unfortunate to see that in stead of approving my original post, moderators approved the post which is collected from my original post in BC! Moreover, it was my first post in skyscraper.. sad..

I think there might be standard forum restriction regarding posting images (i.e certain minimum number of posts are required),but a moderator can explain better. As for the stadium pics I did refer to Banglacricket as the source.. Excellent snaps!

Welcome to the forum, ridzz.
I'm not sure what you're talking about, I didn't approve or disapprove anything. You should be aware of the fact that you cannot upload/post pictures (photos) directly to the forum. You provide a link to a repository. In case you have not done so.

Towhid bhai, are you watching any of the world cup cricket? I thought ESPNSTAR.COM would enable me to watch online, but unfortunately the site says it's not for us in the states :(

Alas, I got the same message " ..... not for your region". :bleep:
I thought about subscribing to BTV for a month, but I'm not sure who carries it. So, unless some other (new) portal comes along we are, as they say, SOL.

I found these guys touting live stream upto 2Mbps for around $36. Their price is cheaper than the $130 that willow.tv is charging.

tanzirian February 18th, 2011, 06:52 AM Thanks for all the pics, guys! These stadia have never looked better.
I don't think I'll get to see any matches this time around, but I'll follow in print.
studdmanster February 18th, 2011, 10:17 AM Aeriel Cricket Match?
yes, a six ball match played on a vertical pitch, i.e. a screen was placed on the tallest building near Bangabandhu Stadium, where around five or people were hung on by cranes and positioned themselves at different point!...the ball was depicted by a green spotlight!
it was just unique...i guess you can also check on youtube, i think ESS (ESPN Starsports) will upload the opening ceremony videos!!

Thanks for the explanation. Quite imaginative. I do hope some will post the open ceremony on youtube or somewhere. Thus far, I haven't found them.

Stadium has been ear marked as a venue for the 2014 T20 World Cup. About a quarter of the ground still needs to be completed to complete the bowl, which is not shown on the photos.

Yes the stadium is getting flood lights based one of the newspaper article I read earlier.. Not just BPL, it is one of the primary venues for next year's T-20World cup.

Yea I know, that's why I said its a 'probable' venue for BPL, since it hasn't been officially declared by BCB yet.
