I think our pavillion looks great! I'm very proud of it! It's very creative and it is very in tune with the theme. It's really disappointing that it takes a person from another country (Singapore) to recognize the beauty, creativity and ingenuity of our pavillion.

It's ok to give constructive criticism but most of the guys do here is MAGREKLAMO AT MAMINTAS.

IT'S LIKE THIS: IF YOU THINK YOU CAN DO BETTER, IF YOU THINK YOU ARE MORE CREATIVE, PROVE IT. OTHERWISE, IF YOU HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY, JUST SHUT YOUR MOUTH.

Hey i get the theme. I think we have a very decent and wonderful pavilion. Just like that of the past expos, our pavillion reaches out to its visitors and interacts with them.

The theme of Shanghai Expo is Better City, Better Life

What makes a better city and a better life???

Performance! Our cities are full of performance artists. They dance and make music that make living in our cities better. They fill us with a vibrancy that enhances our lives. This is what Filipinos are becoming known for all over the world. Our dancers and singers... Such a small country with a rich pool of talented performance artists. The performances that happen around our country's major cities everyday make our CITIES BETTER, and our LIVES BETTER. It's what Shanghai expo is all about.

Parang simbahan yong sa VN...kung "better city - better life" ang theme, mas apt ang Phils.

"Better city, better life" doesn't necessarily mean an ultra-modern city. If society in Vietnam sees a better city resulting to a better life as something which is more spiritually enhanced or abundant, then that might explain why their pavilion looks like a church or a temple.

I like both RP's and VN's interiors though. The two interior's might seem disparate but if you take a look at their respective societies, you might know the reason why.

For my 3rd and last visit to our Phil Pav..I would rather say...It's unique and the best pavillion..not so extravagant but "The Better Life..Better City" theme simply fits in....And is just an extension venue for other Filipino performers who showcase their talents on most of Shanghai's Bar and restaurant...:)...God Bless to all Filipinos in Shanghai..

A for the effort on the analysis but really, performances make our cities great? Philippine cities? made better by performances? by performance artists?

^^I think they applied the theme of the expo both in literal and figurative sense. It's not just the performance of artists that you could see inside, it also includes the contribution of various Philippine cities in urban development. I guess the performance of the artists are highlighted more than the other parts of the pavilion.

Of course, why not? Does the CCP make Manila a better place? Does the CCP and it's production of CATS with Lea Salonga enhance the city's quality of living? I think so. Think of New York and broadway or Chicago and Jazz music. The arts makes our cities better, and that includes performance arts like music and dance. I'm sorry you don't understand the connection im trying to make.

But if the people resort to sing and dance to forget that their stomachs are aching or to fill such, that does not mean a better city nor a better life. "Performance" in its sense that you've used can be a manifestation of better life and city, though, it can't make a city better. Something bigger has to be made or done in order to attain it.

New York has a share of dark streets too, while Chicago is famous for its gangs.

For me a better life can be achieved if the following exist:
Peace, stable source of income, healthy and satisfied life, opportunities, clean environment, available resources, medical help, answer to basic needs, savings, family and friends, freedom, unity, place of worship.
If my city can provide these things, then, I think it's a better city.

I like the RP Pavillion, BTW.

The 5 most amazing Pavilions of Shanghai World Expo

According to this blogger from Singapore
http://www.angryangmo.com/2010/05/24/5-amazing-pavilions-shanghai-world-expo/

at least philippine pavilion is included.

Philippines Pavilion

If you think that diamonds are forever, this is the pavilion to visit, though of course you are not going to see original diamonds. But the transparent material, which is used to make up the exterior surface of this pavilion, is cut into diamond shapes. These shapes keep swinging in the wind, and keep changing, too. So, you can spend half and are standing there, just looking at the different shapes and visual effects. The outer walls have a number of collages. Go into the pavilion and enjoy art performances, folk music, local music, ensemble, and rock music on special stages, which are going to change, according to the performance. And then make sure that you enjoy the hydrotherapy treatment in the pavilion and come out all refreshed and silky smooth!

Among the featured pavilions, the Philippine pavilion is the only one that is not as huge as the others.

one of the masterpieces of Imelda Marcos' love and promotion of the culture and the arts

the plenary hall was also the venue of the 1994 Miss Universe

@ Watcher,

I concur with your suggestions of what makes a city better and more liveable. I suggested that the arts makes a city better, but i did not state that is it the only thing that makes a city better. Of course there are many factors that make a city better, a lot more pertinant issues like proper housing, health care, etc... Im merely defending that our delegates at the shanghai expo chose the arts as a subject that makes a better city. The delegates could have chosen Gawad Kalinga to showcase how a city can be made better, but i think they chose the arts for the purpose of getting people's attention considering our building in the expo is not as eye catching as others.

Though we both won in 2005 & 2008, hindi talaga sikat pavilion natin esp among pinoys. 2005 bland, 2008 madilim. puro negative ang feedback ng mga pinoys. kesyo mas maganda pavilion ni thailand, mas makulay ang malaysia, etc. but the way we interpret the theme, yon ang nagpapanalo sa ating pavilion. maraming pavilions na magara, hi-tech, malaki budget pero di nanalo. in 2005 simple lang pavilion natin even the facade hindi attractive, boring daw. sa loob puro coconut products even the food. our theme was "usbong: the tree of life" na very much related to overall expo theme na "natures wisdom". simple but our pavilion was the most relaxing dahil sa massage. matapos ang mga lakaran, maraming nagpupunta sa pavilion natin para magpamasahe. in 2008 maraming comment na madilim, di klaro ang mga display, sobrang liit, blue lang daw ang ilaw, halata daw ang mesh wire, etc. but still we won. overall theme was water and our pavilion represents archipelago na may mga bubbles. even during construction period naintriga kapitbahay nating malaysia bat maraming nakasabit na kung anu-ano sa pavilion natin. later sumikat pavilion natin sa massage and music by gruppo tribale na napasayaw mga espanyol.

this time around, our pavilion mukhang walang kwenta. but if we dig deeper, this year's theme is better city better life... again simple pa rin pagkapresenta ng pavilion natin. performing cities ang sa atin. at sino ang gumagawa ng ciudad, mga kamay po. everyday may nkalineup na perfomers like cecil licad the pianist, phil philharmonic orchestra, ballet philippines, etc. i believe na nakafocus sa mga tao ang pavilion natin ngaun. and interactive daw. tingnan na lang natin sa darating na mga araw.

I agree a lot from this... the message is more important in an Expo..

Last June 9, 2010, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Department of Tourism staged a world-class performance at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. With the guiding theme “Performing Cities,” the Philippine Delegation to the World Expo presented two shows featuring the best Filipino performing artists on the Philippine-China Friendship Day.

CCP sent the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Philippine Madrigal Singers, Philippine Folk Dance Ensemble, Ballet Philippines, pianists Cecile Licad and Rudolf Golez, violinist Joseph Esmilla, guitarist Butch Roxas, Kulintang virtuoso Kanapia Kalanduyan, composer-conductor Josefino “Chino” Toledo, sopranos Joanna Go and Rachelle Gerodias to Shanghai wherein they performed in productions such as Gilas!, a Cultural Presentation for the Protocular Ceremonies, and Two Rivers, Two Hearts, the Gala Show for the Philippine-China Friendship Day, both on June 9, 2010. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo herself attended the said performances.

Aside from the performances on that day, daily performances, including jazz and classical duets, were held in the Philippine Pavillion, located at Zone B at the Shanghai Expo. The Pavillion also offered free ten-minute hilot, or traditional Filipino massages.

The Shanghai World Expo is one of the biggest, grandest World Expositions ever to be hosted. Held at the Nanpu Bridge-Lupu Bridge region in the center of Shanghai along both sides of the Huangpu River with an area of 5.28 sq. km, it is also the largest World Expo, expecting over 70 million visitors from around the globe. The Philippines is among the 190 countries participating in the six-month Expo, which runs from May to October 2010.

The Philippine pavilion captivates the visitors with its bright and stimulating billboard-like façade that projects the country's theme for the World Expo 2010, "Performing Cities."

As in performing cities, the pavilion's façade announces an urban spirit that is welcoming, exuberant, and always in performance. The façade is a complete wrap-around photographic montage projecting the Filipino hands performing dynamically. These Filipino hands summarize the many skilled and performances that make the Philippine cities unusually delightful.

The Philippine pavilion generates a daily average of 40,000 visitors. If you have not yet visited the Philippines at the EXPO, here are the top 10 reasons why you should not miss it:

1. Daily live performances
From traditional to classical and contemporary music and dance forms, the Filipino performers will get you to sing or groove to the music, with daylong heartwarming and exciting shows at the pavilion!

2. Halo-Halo dessert at the Travel Café Philippines
After a hearty meal or snack of authentic and appetizing Filipino cuisine at the Travel Cafe, cap it with a "halo-halo," a favorite local mouthwatering dessert that is a mixture of shaved ice and milk to which are added various boiled sweet beans and fruits, and served in a tall glass or bowl… made perfect for this summer season!

For those who just opt for thirst-quenching drink, go for natural coconut juice which comes handy with the Café's take-out service or outdoor dining area!

As an added treat, diners at the Travel café need not line up to enter the pavilion or even for EXPO passport stamping

3. Shell products, trinkets and other fashion accessories ("Sulyap" Boutique)
The Philippines as a tropical archipelago composed of more than 7,000 islands, is naturally endowed with marine-based products such as shell jewelry, accessories, decors and other byproducts. Find out what suits you and other souvenir items at the pavilion's boutique.

4. Traditional "hilot" massage
For those patient and determined enough to wait in line, you will be rewarded with a complimentary "hilot" massage, a unique sensory experience and healing touch treatment from specially flown-in therapists from the Philippines .

5. Business opportunity at the Trade Zone (for Trade Buyers)
Trade buyers may look at the feature products at the Trade Zone and consider doing business with suppliers from the "sunrise" industries of the Philippines. A particular sector will be featured each month: mining for July; food industry for August; furniture for September; and urban planning and industrial goods for October.

6. PAL raffle promo
Dine and buy at the Philippine pavilion, and get a chance to win free trip to the Philippines via Philippine Airlines (www.philippineairlines.com.ph)! For a minimum purchase worth RMB50 of any item from the Philippine pavilion, you will get a raffle coupon for a chance to win any of the 5 free tickets for trip to the Philippines, raffled off monthly at the pavilion.

7. Display of musical instruments
Appreciate the full selection of musical instruments from the most traditional to the contemporary that are used for street celebrations. You may try to play some of the instruments, or simply have your photo taken beside the imposing 10-foot drum.

8. San Miguel Beer (Happy Hour promo)
Find out why this Philippine beer is ranked as one of the world's best. Enjoy a bottle or two…best on happy hour promo to avail of discount, and with local appetizer at the Travel Café Philippines.

9. Tour Info Desk
The pavilion features various tourist destination panels and travel videos to give the visitors a glimpse of what to see when they travel to the Philippines. For professional travel advice, just approach the Tour Info Desk (check out any discounted tour package offer).

10. Best of all, experience the warm hospitality and friendliest smile of our amiable pavilion guides and staff that the Filipinos are known for the world over.

Of course, all these attractions at the Philippine pavilion are simply not enough to give you a real experience of the Philippines . Visit the Philippines soon, and have a wonderful and unforgettable trip of a lifetime!

The Philippines was "Party Central" last 29 July 2010 when it threw a hugely successful rave party at the Philippine Pavilion. The festivity dubbed "Philippines' Fiesta Night" was held to celebrate and enhance friendly relations among pavilion guides and student volunteers at the same time take advantage of the top caliber DJs performing daily at the pavilion with strong support from the talented Filipino musical artists at hand.

Other country pavilions also hold their own fun gatherings but according to regular party revelers, the Philippines' Fiesta Night is the best by far. Photo coverage of the outstanding bash may be view at www.exponights.com.

At about 10:30 pm, festivities were already in full swing as the international crowd started pouring in after closing down their respective pavilions. San Miguel Beer, the iconic Filipino beverage, was a proud sponsor and exclusive potion of the evening that kicked off the series of awesome parties at the Philippine Pavilion. Oishi snacks were served for free to the young and energetic crowd (sponsored by Liwayway Co.), to go with the cocktail food (assorted Philippine-style canapés) prepared delightfully by Travel Café Philippines at most affordable prices.

The raffle draw of 2 Shanghai-Manila onto a Philippine travel destination return tickets courtesy of Philippine Airlines was highly anticipated. Philip Hagen of Germany and Australia Pavilion's James Blythmar won the opportunity to see spectacular Philippine sites such as Boracay, Cebu, Bohol, Palawan and Davao.

Livening matters even further were the games offering door prizes made of Philippine indigenous materials or with Filipino design or flair. The revelry raged on past the 2 am schedule, dancing to the captivating rhythm, drinking excellent beer and hanging out with good friends. All good things come to an end however and most can't wait for the next one. See you there!

Senate scouts for new building; Film Center is first choice

by Fel V. Maragay
Manila Standard
August 20, 2010

SENATORS are reviving a proposal to transfer the Senate to the Film Center to save P200 million a year in rentals to the pension fund Government Service Insurance System.

The Senate has been renting space at the GSIS Building inside the Cultural Center complex since the late 1990s, but now some senators want to move to the Film Center provided it is still structurally sound.

“If you compute the amount of rent that we pay, the Senate can acquire its own property in just three years,” Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said, adding the Film Center was the best place for the Senate.

At his and Senator Edgardo Angara’s suggestion, the Senate has formed an ad hoc committee, led by Senator Frank Drilon, to look for a new home and make its recommendations in 18 months. Many feel that the Film Center should be it.

“We will look at the safety of the building—whether it is already condemned or if it is still suitable for use,” Zubiri said.

He said the senators preferred to move to an already completed building rather than have a new one built to minimize expenses. He likes the Film Center because it is near the Senate building.

“The Film Center is a beautiful edifice. It looks like the Lincoln Memorial [in Washington D.C.],” Zubiri said.

The building’s amphitheater could be converted into a session hall, he said.

The Film Center was abandoned in the 1990s after an earthquake caused serious structural damage, but in 2001 it was rehabilitated at a cost of P300 million.

The superstitious once believed that the Film Center was haunted because dozens of workers died there during its construction in 1981, when they were entombed in quick-drying cement. They had been rushing the building’s construction for the First Lady Imelda Marcos’ Metro Manila Film Festival project.

Very nice. Has the Philippines hosted something like this? Like a World Expo?

The Philippines "nearly" hosted the World Expo in 2002, in fact they won the bid to host it, narrowly edging out Brisbane, Australia. While the Exposition bid for 2002 was won by the Philippines, the Philippine Government later withdrew it's application, citing internal financial concerns. Thus, Expo 2002 never happened, it got canceled!

BACOLOD: SM proposes P2.5B dev’t on Capitol land to build Hotel and Convention Center (http://www.bacolodcityguide.com/sm-proposes-p2-5b-devt-on-capitol-land-to-build-hotel-and-convention-center/)

Bacolod City — SM Prime Holdings Inc. is offering to buy or lease a 6.5-hectare property owned by the Negros Occidental provincial government on Gatuslao Street where it plans to build a convention center and hotel.

Hans Sy, SM Prime Holdings Inc. president, said his company also planned to expand its present SM City Mall and build commercial buildings on the property.

“We submitted an unsolicited proposal to build a hotel and convention center on property owned by the provincial government behind the Capitol. The initial estimate of investment is P2.5 billion,” Sy told reporters after a meeting with Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd district) at the provincial Capitol in Bacolod City to discuss SM’s proposal.

“Whether the property will be purchased or leased is subject to final negotiations, following the provincial government’s review of our proposal,” Sy added.

The proposed convention center would have a seating capacity of 3,500, while a 200-room hotel will be built along with it. Another 200-room building will be constructed later.

Sy said he brought his team of architects, financial and legal advisers and contractors during the meeting with Marañon and Benitez to “show our seriousness regarding the project.”

Sy said construction could begin within six months of the signing of an agreement.

Sy said the hotel in Bacolod would be part of the SM chain of hotels in the country, including hotels in Cebu, Tagaytay and Davao.

Marañon said the 6.5-hectare property could be put up for bidding to all interested parties by August.

But he added he would not put on sale the property around the Capitol Lagoon Park or the site of the Negros Occidental Provincial Jail, also on Gatuslao Street.

The development of the property behind the Capitol will be good for Bacolod and Negros Occidental's economy, he added.

Benitez, a friend of Sy, said the project SM was proposing to undertake would be good for the local economy. /INQUIRER

/INQUIRER

PIA Press Release

SM eyes largest convention facility in Davao

DAVAO CITY, Sept 27 -- Despite being a highly-urbanized city, Davao currently lacks a large convention center which can accommodate 3,000 to 5,000 people.

However that problem will be a thing of the past as SM is set to open SMX in Davao City in its mall development located in Lanang district this 2012.

The SMX Davao Convention Center is expected to accommodate 5,000 plus people and can be divided into three halls that can accommodate 700 to 1,800 people. It has a leasable area of about 5,400 square meters.

According to SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation Vice President for sales and marketing Lourdes Macalindong, the facility aims to boost local tourism as it can attract large conventions and exhibitions.

The City has been unable to snatch the hosting of premiere conventions and other large events like the much-coveted Ad Congress because of the lack of a sufficient convention facility in the City.

Jason Magnaye, chief of the Davao City and investment Promotions Center and the City Tourism Operations Office says that they will be promoting these convention facilities as the city sets to woo the Meetings Incentives Conventions and Exhibit (MICE) market.

He bared that another development, the Davao International Exhibition and Convention Center is also being constructed also in Lanang. The facility can accommodate 3,000 to 4,000 people.

Magnaye said that the two convention centers will be open by the time the City hosts MICE convention in March 2013.

The SMX is touted to become a one-stop convention complex with a nearby hotel being put up in the area. The 204-room Park Inn Hotel under the Raddisson brand aims to complement the SMX and will be connected by a series of foot bridges. The P800-million hotel the first of its brand in Southeast Asia is expected to open by 2013. (PIA/RG Alama)

Lomography Manila to present photography exhibit

MANILA, Philippines – Whilst We Wait , inspired by Jeff Nachtigall’s The Art of Waiting, is a local analogue photography project which centers on the concept of waiting.

It began last April of 2010 wherein each month for a year, its contributors took a film photograph or two. Nothing was developed until after a year. During the waiting period, the contributors expressed what they hoped to have captured on film through handwritten letters.

Whilst We Wait was founded and is curated by Erin Emocling, editor-in-chief at Lomography’s International Online Magazine. The project also includes the following film photographers: Denver Garza, Francis Ybanez, Geli Balcruz, Gerhard Bandiola, Ivanka Hicban, Jam Licupa, Jenny Bautista, Jimmy Hilario, Joy Asto, Kara Hizon, Lakan Bunyi, Lauren Villarama, Louie Nucup, Rene Nob, Shabby Pablo, and Virna Odiver.

In cooperation with Lomography’s headquarter in Manila, Whilst We Wait will be having its much-awaited public exhibition on December 10 at 55 Paseo de Roxas, Makati, from 4 p.m. onwards. Lomographers in the metro and analogue photography enthusiasts are most especially invited to join the event.

There will be acoustic sets by local indie bands and a mini bazaar.

Every week, there is always a concert, a literary workshop or poetry reading, a play, a dance, an exhibit, a film showing, or some other cultural activity taking place in a number of exhibition halls and performance spaces, such as the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium and Gallery, the Woodward Little Theater, the Guy Hall Music Sala, the Silliman Hall Gallery, the Amphitheater, the Main Library, the Gymnasium, the Audio-Visual Theater, the End House Gallery, the Silliman Church Catacombs, and others. Before the Luce Auditorium's completion in 1975, Shakespearean plays were regularly presented in the Amphitheater, and prestigious performing companies such as Le Grand Ballet Classique de France and such musical luminaries as pianist Susan Starr have performed in the Gymnasium.

In 1962, the Cultural Affairs Committee was formed under the able chairmanship of Prof. Miriam G. Palmore, who was the former director of the School of Music and Fine Arts (now the College of Performing Arts). Among the famous artists and performers in those early years of the Luce Auditorium included the Cultural Center of the Philippines Dance Company, Taipei Children's Choir, French concert pianist Nicole Delannoy, German violinist Denes Zsigmondy, American soprano Julia Finch, Swiss pianist Nicole Wickihalder, Filipina pianist Cecile Licad, American violinist Stanley Plummer, and popular local singers such as Pilita Corrales who was then a singing superstar in Australia. Silliman's own artists and performers also dominated the cultural landscape, including the Men's Glee Club under the baton of maestro Albert Faurot, the Silliman Young Singers and the Luce Choral Society under Mrs. Isabel Dimaya Vista, the Silliman Dance Troupe (now the Kahayag Dance Troupe) under Mrs. Lucy Jumawan, the Aldecoa Family Ensemble, and the Portal Players under Mr. Amiel Y. Leonardia.

^^Luce Auditorium is not primarily for conventions and exhibitions. Therefore it is NOT a convention center, but a concert/performance hall, much like Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo of the CCP. As a musician myself how degrading it is to put a concert hall in the ranks of a convention center!

I hope everyone is able to distinguish the difference between the two building occupancies.

Who says that Luce Auditorium is a convention center? I've watch shows on this theater, it wouldn't take a genius to realize that.

There was once a thread on this page featuring the performance halls. I am no stranger as I have posted on that thread about Luce Auditoriums a few times before. Now, with all the mergers, renaming, and transfers of threads I could no longer find the title of that thread on this page. Browsing few pages back there's the picture of CCP. Without the luxury of time to review the other pages, I opted to post it here with the thought that it is the same thread that I used to post before.

This is a inadvertent case of misplacing, nothing more, nothing less.

Apparently you did not notice my reply on that CCP post at the previous page.

This has been reminded for the nth time here in SSC: Read thoroughly before posting a reply. Not everything in a thread's discussion is relevant to the thread topic.

Do I need to restate why I was able to post here or are you just stating the obvious?

One more thing, the mere fact that I took effort in researching and compiling those pictures is a manifestation of how proud I am about this auditorium. Better improve yourself in analyzing and understanding the contents of the post, the way it was being presented, the tone and mood, and its general structure before jumping into conclusion if such post is degrading or not.

You obviously made a mistake and overreact in concluding that it is already a sign to degrade this iconic edifice of my Alma Mater by associating it with the other buildings of a different kind.

^^ Yes I did overreact and it was a mistake. Hence if you read my reply I did not comment further on your original post's content, but I simply reminded you of an unspoken rule. It's a natural reaction to remind of the rules if someone failed to follow it, for the benefit of everyone else. The issue of my reaction was effectively resolved when you explained yourself, so please stop misconstruing my posts as if its all just about degrading the Luce. That is a done deal; what I am arguing with you are the technicalities here. If you do not want to follow rules, suit yourself. I have said enough.

BTW, use this ^^ instead of quoting entirely if the post you're replying is the last one in the thread. That will save others the effort to scroll down.

SMX Davao

The opening of SMX Davao is an exciting development. According to my sources, it is probably opening a little later in the year, probably 3Q, closer to August 2012. A Park Inn by Radisson hotel will open in 2013 adjacent to the facility but will have no meeting or conference facilities of its own.

SMX grows hardware reach in the Philippines

PHILIPPINES' SMX Convention Specialist Corp is strengthening its position in the international business events market with hardware expansion in Manila and Davao.

The SMX Convention Centre, sited within the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City, Manila, will turn five this November and is looking at expansions totaling 10,000m2.

SMX Convention Center AVP for sales and marketing Marivic Marquez said the company’s first option was to construct the new facilities adjacent to the existing centre, but considerations were also made for the additional spaces to be included within a hotel next door. The hotel is targeted for a 2015 opening.

The company will raise another MICE centre in the capital city by early 2013. Part of a mixed-use residential and commercial complex in the Bonifacio Global Centre, near the Makati business district, the 2,000m2 Aura Pavilion will house three halls and nine meeting rooms.

Beyond Manila, SMX Convention Specialist Corp is set to open a convention centre in Davao in the third quarter of this year, offering some 5,400m2 of space that can be divided into three separate halls. It will be adjacent to a new mall and a future Park Inn by Radisson hotel that will open next year.
