wow, never seen that one before. it says it maybe taller then 602ft Aussie sq to become Australias tallest. and this was back in 1970..looks 200m?
the 602ft or 183m was Aussie sq "RL" height. but it ended up being Australia;s tallest anyway in 1991 with its 264m antenna."officially".
thanks

This tower looked ok..and at the high location of Cnr.Bourke and William sts. would have been a landmark tower for sure....but even though the present AMP is not quite up to date it is still a good representative of the late 60's so we should keep some.....! http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9263/m050mediumpz9.jpg (http://imageshack.us) http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/6806/m047mediumuj0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/743/m040mediumqp8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I would like the St James and AMP buildings to stay as well. :)

Grollo
May 11th, 2007, 03:07 PM
The first version was 302m high (to top of glass, 275m to top floor) with 72 levels above ground.

It was approved with 62 levels and a height of 274m to the top of the glass. The glass box on the roof shown in that rendering was just a building envelope. If it had of gone ahead they were going to have a design competition to build a glass sculptural element at the top of the tower within the envelope.

I wish it had of got built on the Grand Central site across the road.

First of all I pretty much only joined this community to share this with you.
I have foud many old family slides and got the projector up and running again which means I am now looking at thousands of family photos from 15 - 40 years ago. Many are family members in younger times and many are the cities we live and breath in today. I can only look at them at night, and am only getting through 40 a day but I have seen some pretty cool images. PLease note I would love to get a slide to digital picture converter but for the time being Im taking pictures, of a picture, that is of the projection on my wall - well white sheet actually.
Heres a few pics.

Amazing image looking over melbourne entertainment venues, to be. I would guess date it at around 1980. Melbourne park was completed in 1988.

Rialto still show wrong heights for there display board.
i informed them 10 years ago. if they want to show sea level heights they should say it. i suppose its just what Eureka does also to it stats. must be a grollo thing.lol

I agree that it's misleading claiming height from sea level yet in both Rialto and Eureka's cases they have more to lose than gain...in that both are at very low datum points to begin with....if you use same principal for 120 Collins St for example they lose out. One positive using sea level for all buildings......as long as the city is coastal....is overall height difference can be seen as actual not presumed....eg. Rialto compared to 120 Collins St....purely on building height Rialto would be higher than 120 Collins but ground level is very different.

CULWULLA
December 10th, 2007, 01:37 AM
^yes both rialto/eureka are 2.3m (8ft) above sea level. but that is irrelevant. should have correct stats.

@ 153m, the weather antenna above 303 collins st was once the highest structure in melb .
1m higher then BHp completed 1 year earlier in 72. the com bank of 75 equaled the height of 303s antenna.

Maybe I've never really loved the chisel.....It always looked a bit squat to me and the twin spires seem to conflict with the crystal chisel shape......This proposed tower would have been around the same height as the ESB and would still be the Landmark Tower of Melbourne. I agree certain Architecture typecasts buildings to a particular decade, but if the Building is good that's not a bad thing.....Guess we prefer different styles?

And the council seriously considered such a vague proposal - I might build a hotel, or maybe some apartments, or offices, no maybe shops, and it could be anything from 4 to 12 stories.

My grandson is nearly 6..so I was a grandparent at 49 but my daughter was 27 when she had him so I could have been a Grandfather in my early 40's......my parents are not 80 yet so they are Great GP's...so all you (straight) young people get out there and have kids..OK...People these days seem to hang about then want work and materialistic stuff then one day when the female is 40 they think ..hey better have kids...then they are old and cranky bringing up crazy teenagers...Now I can enjoy my grandchildren (3)....and teach him to love Melbourne and skyscrapers and encourage him to become an Architect...what I started to do back in the 70's before getting sidetracked. Wonder if impressions made at a young age influence direction of life later?.....All this a bit deep and meaningful ..sorry!...PS...I guess I could have scanned myself for this thread ?...hmmm maybe not!

Hahaha, thats awesome.
It definitely does make a difference to show them when they are young. My mum was a tourism lecturer at RMIT and i used to go up to her office and stare at the view. She wants me to become an architect and she's the one that got me interested in cities. She has heaps of old brochures on crown and docklands and rialto and stuff so i used to be bombarded with them! WOW

You must have had kids young Redbaron.

I am 23 years old and would not even consider having a serious relationship let alone children. Everyone is different I suppose.

My parents got married at the age of 28 (dad) and 26 (mum). Both went overseas more than 3 times, both had settled careers and both enjoyed their single youthful life. They always say to me that being young makes up only a short part of you life and therefore you shouldnt wish to rush into too many heavy responsiblities because afterall your life as an adult is much longer than your life as a child, teenager and young adult. If you life an average life expectancy you have a shitload of time so why not enjoy your 20s.

Each to their own I suppose. There are pros and cons of both. I am 23 years old and only have one of my grandparent still alive so in that sense its shit, but thats life.

This thread is heading in strange direction..except for the old bit?....One point I would like to make though....I got married at 21....had my first child when I was 24, second at 26...during all that time still lived a normal life..along with going to work....at that time a civil/survey draughtsman.....We went out to Movies, dances, used to drive interstate on weekends to all the touring car and manufacturers champ. races...went out with mates to pubs every now and then.Took kids to NZ and we used to go to Fiji most every year during early 80's...OK had parents who loved looking after the kids sometimes but we didn't just dump them all the time....Never understood the thing about life or fun grinding to a halt when you have kids ?......was married for 20 years. When I spent alot of time interstate during the 80's on business, wife ran off with (former) best mate. So at 40 started new life...still young enough to enjoy and kids old enough to understand....Now all OK...and I have the best time with my eldest ( in particular) grandson...and being a Personal Trainer forming him to enjoy eating vegetables..haa and regular exercise...drinking water instead of soft drink!!! (poison)....so all good really!...That's the last I will say about it....I just hope it makes a few of you young people think what's lifes all about in the long run!......and that comes along way quicker than you could ever imagine............
