Those are amazing shots you provided Tmac!

My guess is that the building all the way to the right is the 27 storey Doorin tower at Gulshan-2.And you are probably aware that the other two U/C buildings in the pic are Nafi Tower and Jabbar Tower

Ofcourse I am enjoying all the pictures of this thread... but the pictures with red Krishnachura (Delonix regia) flowers are so beautiful. Those pictures were taken in or around the Bengali month of Phalgun (Mid February to Mid March). Right?

Everybody here in the bangladesh subforum have done a splendid job in posting images of developing dhaka. But I would like to ask u guys a favor if I could borrow some of your posted images and post them on wikipedia because many people are starting to look at wikipedia articles a lot and I think it would be could if we posted some images there. With your permission I want to update some of the bangladeshi articles and add pictures if it is alright with u guys. obviously ill attrubute the image ownership to you guys

The framework for the first five floors of the Lotus Kamal Tower is already up,but I fear that progress might be slow as the owner of the company is still under arrest.It would be a great addition to the gulshan-1 skyline once its built...you can tell from the rendering.

I don't think anyone will mind you posting their pics on Wikipedia. Even if the actual photographer found out and got mad about it (highly unlikely) all you would have to do is remove the pic, and that would be the end of the matter. Very few of the pics we post here are copywrighted.

No high rises are allowed in that New market area and nearby Dhanmondi(two of the very few areas that are no high rise zones)...Do you think we would have left it like that otherwise ; )

Kewl pano, Tmac. New market masjid is looking good. New Market has better atmosphere than the newer malls although it does lack modern facilities. The problem with the newer malls even Bashundhara is that they are a little grey and dreary inside.

There actually is a Square building in Mohakhali. It is located across the street from the BRAC University building and Aarong House. It's a very nice looking white-colored highrise. However, I'm not quite sure if the building you guys are talking about in this thread is really the Square building though. The Square building is further down the road in Mohakhali. This picture I believe was taken closer to the flyover side.

essentially there should be two towers if the current plan is still underway. the first few floors is common to both towers...

its still in the early phase of development. should take a while longer before u see the towers being constructed...

As our economy grows, I think the government should dedicate a part of its income to construction of housing units for the poor. Then it might be possible to relocate the residents of that big slum adjacent to Banani. As far to my knowledge, that land was supposed to be a park, and the northern suburbs don't have many dedicated green spaces.

If it was up to me, I'd take the military cantonnment and turn that into a big central park like in NYC, and move the military to some other location like Savar. But I suppose the current govt will be having none of that :) .

Agreed that multistoried housing facilities should be taken seriously by our government and there should be more parks. Many big cities of the world don't have a big and nice park like Dhaka Ramna park.

That is the Gulshan Lake Beautification Tmac..they are building walkways all around the lake and planting small plants beside them.I dont know what other plans exist for the beautification.

That's great news...will be a fine place for a stroll once complete. I hope they are able to do the same for Banani Lake some day...that would probably be the best place to see / take pictures of the Banani / Gulshan / Mohakhali cluster.

ya I am going to Bangladesh on the 14th of July. I will be there for only 3 weeks. I will try to take some photos. I will be attending a family wedding....so most likely I will be busy the whole time. I will do my best to take some pics. Is it safe to walk around the street taking photos with a digital camera? I hate taking pics from a moving vehicle. I would rather get out of the car and take pics.

Yeah, I am always a little self conscious walking around with a camera. The pics I took when I was there this January were from the rooftop of my extended family home, rooftop of Mehraba Plaza (which you have no problem getting to...I am sure there are more places like that), and from 29th floor of BD Bank, after asking for permission. But our own Mirza is undoubtedly the best person to ask about taking pics.

Also I know you are there a short time, but how about a side trip to Sylhet? Since your family is from there, maybe they could arrange it. I am sure there are some highrises going up there which we have not seen in the forum.

Tmac..I would say its perfectly safe to walk around the streets taking shots with your digi cam...except for a few areas..like Mirpur,Mohammedpur,Old Dhaka maybe..But in all other places,I dont think there should be any trouble..I do that alot,and Thanks to Allah,I never faced any problem.Most people got camera cell phones these days,so a Digicam is nothing that attracts special attention.

don't know what the two buildings are though...i just guessed they would have to be significantly tall and the shadows around the buildings suggest they are tall enough for the purpose...

Tmac, regarding that picture, you can see the front facade of Navana Tower, so it is definitely not taken from Banani. From the angle of the photo, I would say it was taken from a point southeast of Navana...most likely from the Baridhara side of Gulshan Lake.

Myabe i can give an insight into the debate about that night photo. I tend to agree with Tanzirian but I would say Baridhara is slightly north of the location from where the photo was taken. It may be in fact taken from the progoti swarani the long road running from Rampura bridge towards airport road from where there is a connecting road to Gulshan 1

^^ You are probably right. By "Baridhara" I was just referring to the eastern shore of Gulshan Lake. Since I never lived in that part of town, I am not that good on area boundaries...that's why I thought of the whole area east of the lake as "Baridhara."

Wide-angle lens - i.e. lens with short focal length. Focal lengths of 14 to 35 mm should be good. 14mm should give you close to 180 degree angle of vision.

Thank you. Yes, photography is/was one of my hobbies. I haven't done that in a while. Inspired by all your posts, I'm planning on reviving my passion for photography. As I am not planning to visit Bangladesh in next couple of years, I am trying to get my nephews and nieces to send me pictures or directly post in Bangladesh SSC forum.

About the picture in question – It has been distorted for special effect. Notice how the buildings look slanted (fish-lens would make the building look converging at the top). Special effect lenses are also widely used, but in this digi-age a lot of special effects are also done with computer software. Special effect lenses are used as an add-on to the primary lens.

Actually that is a really good idea. Whenever i go to Dhaka my parents keep telling me how much it has changed and how it was far less crowded in the 80s and far more beautiful even without the modern buildings and infrastructure. I happen to believe you start sugar coating your memories after a while but city pictures would definitely help me and several of the other young forumers here understand what they are talking about.

^^ Well Dhaka, and Bangladesh in general, was a lot cleaner and safer place back in the day. There were no real slums before the 1960s. The air quality was a lot better before the 1990s, although it still wasn't that great when I was kid. And crime was much lower when our parents were growing up. Life was less stressful in some respects. The problem was, the country was stagnant after 190 years of colonial rule and 24 years of de-facto colonial rule. The good thing about Dhaka today, is that it is on its way to become a proper world class metropolis, and as such is a much more dynamic place. Most world class amenities are available for those with the money to afford them, which in the past wasn't the case even if you were affluent. But the process of development for a poor nation is necessarily an untidy one, with all the problems I mentioned before.

^^ How long ago did you live in BD? Do you have any pics from back then? I was thinking of starting a thread some time down the line for nostalgic old photos of days gone by. This would include old photos of Dhaka, but not with educational ephasis like my "Historic Dhaka" thread, and also of people, other places, old family vacation photos, etc. But by myself, I don't know how much I would be able to contribute. I will try starting this in a few months, since I am preoccupied with other matters just right now.

:nuts: Information overload. There are dozens of ads in that picture alone. If this kind of overkill continues Dhaka might have to end up going in Sao Paolo's direction where they banned all billboard ads. I would see that as a loss to Dhaka cause ads make the place look more vibrant. There just needs to be some moderation.

^^ They also help sweep dirt under the rug...what I mean by that is, for example, billboards hide the jheel / shanty adjacent to Hotel Sonargaon, so that they are not visible from the main road.
