This thread is inspired by the upcoming year-long program titled ‘Beautiful Bangladesh’ which will be held in 2009 with a target of earning at least US$ 500 million from tourism industry during one year period.

This will be a continuation of the "Bangladesh - Tourism" thread. We already have a separate thread for Paharpur, Palaces and Zamindars mansions. Post any beautiful photo of Bangladesh here. This should be an excellent thread.

Tk 700m projects for development of Kuakata tourist spot

The government has taken up projects involving Tk 700 million (70 crore) for development of the Kuakata tourist spot.

A two-year project involving Taka 100 million (10 crore) for infrastructural development includes renovation of two Buddhist temples, development of a youth tourist centre, construction of a motel and purchase of modern transports.

Another project costing Taka 600 million includes construction of three bridges, and a motel at Barisal is under consideration, sources said.
The infrastructural development project proposal has already been completed. The Public Works Department will renovate the two Buddhist temples.

The rest of the work includes construction of a 10-bed motel, a 200-bed youth tourist centre and purchase of two air conditioned luxury tourist buses by the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation.

Kaptai lake maybe the most beautiful place in Bangladesh. I don't know why it isn't that famous.

^^ Well, it's certainly beautiful, but not unique as far as the natural aspect is concerned...there are many beautiful lakes in the world after all. Even here in South Carolina, there is a reservoir lake called Lake Jocassee which is very similar, being surrounded by hills and with waterfalls dumping into it. On the other hand, if Kaptai is promoted both for its beauty and for the indigenous tribal culture, that would go a long way to distinguish it from other similar water bodies. I don't know if any of you are familiar with the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii. If something similar was set up in Rangamati showcasing the tribal tradiitons of the Hill Tracts, that combined with the attractive natural setting, could be a potential draw for foreign tourists. That, plus improving existing lodging, infrastructure, and public safety.

^^ I hope some day when all South Asian countries are developed we can have more of an open border system like USA / Canada does today (no, I am not expecting that any time soon). Meghalaya has a great collection of waterfalls right next door to us. When you think about it, with infrastructure of a developed country, even the Himalayas are only a couple of hours drive from our border.

I belive that one day South Asia will be connected together since a lot of Bengalis are residing in Indian states like Assam, Bangalore, West Bengal, and Tripura causing more highways to connect Bangladesh with them.

Nice pics Masud (Tmac too!). Our forum has been particularly lively in the past few days! Those last pics remind me of the cover of "Bangladesh: a Mosaic in Green" published by the govt in early 1990s. Do any of you guys have that book? That book was a huge leap forward in the quality of photo books released by the govt. Before that there used to be the "Meet Bangladesh" series, which, while it had a few great photos, overall were not nearly as professionally done.

Foy's Lake is a man-made lake in Chittagong, Bangladesh. It was dug in 1924 and was named after the Railway engineer Foy. An amusement park, managed by the Concord group, is located here.
I was there for a couple of hours on the last day of Bangla year (13th April)...all the pics were taken by me with a sony cybershot. Hope you 'll enjoy.

Thanks for the many pics Tareq. When you speak of the enclosed area of Foy's Lake, who owns that? The government or some private party? The third and fourth pic in post 108 look like they are building some condos there.

I think it would be reasonable to say, through everyone's efforts, that this forum is now the best collection of pictures of Bangladesh buildings and places anywhere on the web. There are other places that provide more on culture / daily life but our place has an unparalleled collection of architecture / places of interest.

If you have a collection of photographs of our wildlife, start a thread just for those. Or maybe one thread for all sorts of animals found in Bangladesh – wild or domestic.

I have said this before, but it's such a shame those Brits didn't draw the border a few miles to the north. Meghalaya, which you can see in Tmac's last few pics, has some of the best waterfalls in the world...you can see a couple or more in these pics. Hardly any Indians visit there...but if this was part of Bangladesh they would be major attractions. Hopefully some day South Asia will progress to the point where crossing borders is not a big hastle...then Bangladeshis will still be able to enjoy close up.

Yeah, this is really very frustrating. I 've been to this place near Jaintapur border in Sylhet. While I was having an overwhelmed feeling standing near the foot of that highland kissing sky, I got an unfriendly whistle from the BDR people, warning me not to make any more step ahead otherwise BSF might shoot. A few days later, I found in some newspapers, BSF shot some poor people dead on the very same spot; which turned into a fight between BDR and BSF eventually.
I aint sure though, I read somewhere, sort of election took place in these places during partition whether the people wanna go with India or Bangladesh. Sylhet choosed BD while Meghalaya, Assam choosed India. And borders around these area werent finalized on 14th or 15th of August, rather a few days later...has anybody a clear idea on that?

meghnarmajhi
July 3rd, 2007, 05:47 PM
There was an "election" in many parts of the subcontinent. Based upon what the majority of the locals opted for - they became parts of India and Pakistan. There had been reports of irregularities in the implementation. Karimganj should have been a part of Sylhet. Look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karimganj - even today the majority of the population of Karimganj are Muslims.

Also, the fates of many of the places were decided based upon what their rajas or the nawabs or the likes wanted to do about them. My careful analysis of the history of the time is that the Brits were biased towards India. A lot of disputes and chaos we are facing today were created intentionally.

I usually avoid getting into controversial topics about other countries in this forum. But hey - we can't stop discussing history.

====================================================
My favorite Bengali writer, Syed Muztaba Ali, was born in Karimganj.

Tmac, I don't see why we should stifle all discussion. We were talking about history, not current politics, and the discussion was about the pictures you posted. Those hills in your photos, after all, are not a part of Bangladesh, and there is a reason for that. I don't think anyone here has said anything disrespectful or untrue.

Meghalaya DID choose to be a part of India, and I am fine with that...but the borders of Meghalaya were not drawn along ethnic lines. The British decided (arbitrarily) that the eastern boundaries of Bengal should end where the hills began. That is why Sylhet was not a part of Bengal (it was a district of Assam). A "plebiscite" election held in Sylhet allowed it to join East Pakistan, otherwise it would not be a part of Bangladesh today. Sylhet is very fortunate in that respect...not all areas were allowed to choose their own fate. Had the plebiscite not taken place, Sylhet would have been a forgotten hill town in eastern India. Instead today it is on course to become a major metropolis. Meanwhile, on the western side of Bengal, three Muslim majority districts were left in West Bengal, while one Hindu majority district (Khulna) was included in East Pakistan. In the south, CTG Hill Tracts were also given to East Pakistan...the natives of those areas, of course, were never consulted as their wishes. Another issue related to tourism, since that is the main topic here, is that the border was drawn right through the most important medieval site in Bengal - Gaur. The sad consequence is that while the monuments on the Bangladesh side are well preserved, the majority, which remain on the other side, are not as well cared for and may well disappear some day. This is not surprising, since India has many beautiful monuments, and Gaur is not important in the big scheme. However Gaur is the most important historic city in Bengal and would probably be a UNESCO "World Heritage" site today if it wasn't for this reason...certainly it deserves the designation more than a place like Bagerhat. I think Bangladesh and West Bengal should take joint initiative to create an international peace park like has been done in other nations with a shared site of interest. Realistically, that probably won't happen, but it would certainly be a boon to both parties both for tourism and for preservation of shared heritage. On another note, some day...still very much in the future...I hope to go to Meghalaya (a US passport should help) and take pictures of the falls there...which I will share with you guys if we are all still here ten or twenty years from now :)

I always encourage discussions. I have created a Bangladesh politics thread. The fact of the matter is no one uses it including you. I come to this thread to look at beautiful photos of Bangladesh. If you want to turn this into a photo and discussion thread then you can go ahead. I was voicing my opinion. If you don't like it then so be it. Every single discussions inevitably turn into either bashing India or Pakistan or the British. Can you gurantee this will not be the same? Anyways do whatever you want Tan.

I know this discussion is over but indeed the borders of bangladesh weren't drawn ethnically but by geographical factors. The entire division of Khulna had a 52% Hindu majority which was indeed given to Bangladesh instead of India. Just think, if the British had made ethnicity a way to separate South Asia, we would lose a lot of territory. Khulna is 1/6th of Bangladesh.

Zaiyaf, as you can see from above, we have agreed not to continue this discussion on this thread. So please, leave it at that. This would be an interesting discussion though, perhaps we can have a "Spontaneous Discussions" thread, or something like that, as an umbrella for topics which do not fit into other specific threads.

More than likely a quarry. People have been taking the stone from there for a long time. Bad for natural beauty...good for economy.

Thanks...due to lack of stone, brick was usually used for important buildings...over time the quality of brickwork and terracotta decoration was evolved to a very high level...this is particularly the case in Ancient and Sultanate period buildings but can also be seen in some later structures like Kantajir Mandir.

Around Madhabkunda Falls - photos by Benji Holzman:

I am intrigued by the 4th photo here...it looks like some falls other than Madhabkunda. If I ever go to Madhabkunda I would like to find out if there is some other falls and if so maybe find a way to its base (of course, there is the possiblity that this waterfall is located within India and the picture taken from Bangladesh)...when hiking to a falls I like some tranquility and solitude...Madhabkunda though very beautiful, has become quite crowded these days. The other possibility is that the 4th pic is just Madhabkunda Falls from a different angle, but it does look like a different waterfall, doesn't it?

^^ On one hand I would think that the shot is just a distant view of Madhabkunda...because if there was a second fall close by, why wouldn't be a tourist draw as well? But on the other hand it seems to cascade over a semi-circular ledge, while Madhabkunda falls over straight ledge.

My scanner does OK with photographs but isn't that good with scans from books etc. Since you asked one time previously Majhi Bhai...that's me seated at left in the last pic.
