the blue running track goes nicely with the rest of the interior

That reflecing glass doesn't look good IMO. A bit corny. And I don't like interior colours. Basically it's too colourful. Should've looked more gravy.

^^ besides seats, which are high quality, everything is bad in this stadium but... better than before. The main problem is that the stadium already today looks old, till 2012 where in the meantime the world will see the fantastic stadiums in South Africa, this will be look like from a previous era.

If you think carefully, this will be one of the best stadiums in Ukraine (Not the best, just one of the best). One day when Ukraine will get more huge modern stadiums, the Donbass-Arena will not be as popular anymore.

i think olimpysky, the lviv and donbass stadiums will be the best looking stadiums. kharkiv stadium will also be modern as the other ones, but its not the best looking. but its not ugly like other people said.

This stadium is not finished yet. So let's talk if it is ugly or not after December 5. And as it was noticed it is "Metalist" stadium, so it is logical that there are lots of metal constructions. Even though I can't say that it is ugly, what I can say is that it definitely differs from other stadiums, especially exterior.

Also, you can see here (http://ukraine2012guide.com/index.php?option=com_joomgallery&func=viewcategory&catid=50&Itemid=63&lang=en) that at night lights can improve the situation.

And one more thing. All seats at the Metalist stadium will be installed by 12 September 2009 (http://ukraine2012guide.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=135%3Aall-seats-at-the-metalist-stadium-will-be-installed-by-12-september-2009&lang=en)

plasticterminator
September 12th, 2009, 07:48 PM
I like this project for what it is accepting the funding was not there to construct a shakhtar type arena or even dnipro. At the time of first redevelopment kharkiv was only reserve for 2012. It follows similar principals and style to that of classic stadiums that have retained there shape after renovation such as brussels national, berlin olympic and ferynoord. They just need the plasticterminator to sort out that woeful pitch and it should be a good venue. I have visited kharkiv twice and it will be a good city for a host venue although not sure about accommodation but the centre has a good feel with plenty of huge squares and open areas for football villages etc and pre post match events as is the uefa bandwagon nowadays plus good transport links especially to kiev which is probably why it was chosen above other cities with potentially better stadia.

I think the gloomy weather made it look worse :)

The area is going to be quite nice, there's a construction of a new, large entertainment complex (mall) in front of the stadium and there were many other projects for the immediate vicinity. As to the housings (commieblocks) they are standard for the former soviet block, neither best nor worst.

mihai_alex
November 14th, 2009, 12:22 PM
It seems that some people(konrad and rakim) don't get the fact that the whole surroundings of the stadium is suffering reshaping, redecorating and rehabilitating. That's why there's so much mud,and looks so "poor".Though the buildings look clean and decent, not poor.

I don't think they intended to build all of them, it's just a concept view how the area will gradually be developed. The financial crisis became a big obstacle to most of these projects.

So the Netherlands will play their 3 matches in this stadium... If i may be honest i think this is the worst Euro 2012 stadium by far. It has a athletics track and the stadium itself is not brand new but renovated.

Would have been much better for the Orange fans to play in Gdansk instead because that is a lot better to travel to by car, now a lot of fans need to go there by plane which is much more costly.

Anyhow, we have to do with it, we will have to beat Portugal, Germany and Denmark in this stadium the same way we defeated France, Italy and Romania in Bern! :)

I agree.
Even the stadium in Odessa would have been a better choice. Plus let's not forget that Poland has built 2 faaaaaaaar better stadiums for football, in Warsaw (Pepsi Arena) and Krakow. And these stadiums will NOT be used for the Euro. :ohno:
It's a big shame. First of all to leave out a great city like Krakow, and second because we shouldn't have stadiums with athletic tracks at a football final tournament!!! Unfortunately Ukraine came with two such venues, instead of building 2 bigger capacity football-only stadiums and transforming them later, after the tournament, by reducing the capacity and adding those tracks. :bash: Would have been much better for the Orange fans to play in Gdansk instead because that is a lot better to travel to by car, now a lot of fans need to go there by plane which is much more costly.
Don't be silly.:) If it would be after everybody's wishes, than except Russia and maybe the Czech Rep., every national team would have liked to play in Gdansk, Poznan or Wroclaw, because it's closer to their countries...

Reconstructed Kyiv Olympic Stadium is amazing! Even better than Berlin Olympic Stadium, which held the WC 2006 Final!

As for Metalist Stadium, its reconstruction cost only $ 80 million. I agree, it's not the best choice for this EURO, but not worse than some stadiums that were in EURO 2008 ;)

Yes i agree with your first point, there are indeed better stadiums in Poland then in Ukraine, but it had to be a fifty-fifty between the 8 stadiums: 4 great stadiums in Poland, 3 great stadiums in Ukraine and 1 lesser stadium ( i like the stadium in Kyiv although it has athletics track )

About the 2nd point:

Although track poses inconvenience, it is rather up to owners discretion whether to include it or not. Also, there does not seem to be any qualitative or regulatory issue with reconstructed stadium. Anyhow, it didn't hurt hosting capabilities of such stadiums like King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels (Euro 2000) - rennovated + track, Busan Asiad Stadium/Incheon Munhak Stadium/Daegu Stadium/Gwangju World Cup Stadium/Nissan Stadium/Shizuoka Stadium/ Nagai Stadium/ Miyagi Stadium/ Ōita Stadium/ Niigata Stadium (WC 2002) - all have tracks, Olympiastadion Berling / Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion Stuttgart/ Frankenstadion in Nuremberg (WC 2006)- all rennovated +track, Ernst-Happel-Stadion Vienna, Letzigrund Zurich (Euro 2008) - all rennovated +track, Royal Bafokeng Stadium (WC 2010) - track.

My point is that such stadiums have always been used in competitions of this level, and there are good utilization reasons to do so. This one is aethetically bland - yep, but there is nothing operationally wrong with it. And compared to Odesa or Dnipropetrovsk, you get ~+7K fans.

Something gives me a feeling if a tournament would be hosted in any developed EU country, nobody would question the stadium. But we are in Eastern Europe, evil and incapable by default, so someting wrong about it has to be found (at least that's how some critical argumentation looks to me)

We can argue about this all day long, but there is one fact: a few thousand people sitting behind the two goals will need binoculars to see something from the action. Especially those sitting in the first 10-15 rows. You know how many thousands of Euros o foreigner will have to spend to be able to watch a game live from those seats? (included travel, hotel, ticket and other expenses) And he will see what?...some small points running around the field? This is a matter of comfort on a football stadium in the 21st century. Especially at a final tournament. So there is not much we can argue about here, is it?
Plus other small details such as the difference in atmosphere when playing football in a stadium with the stands near the pitch, or in a stadium where the stands are 15-20 meters away.

You don't have to search the history books and remind us of all those stadiums with tracks from the past. We all remember them. I also remember that football used to be played with a leather ball, and spectators used to sit on wooden benches. But we are talking about progress here, aren't we? It doesn't matter if it's Eastern or Western Europe. Of course stadiums like Olympiastadion in Berlin are great venues, but ask ANYBODY in Germany where he prefers to watch a football game: In Dortmund or in Berlin?

In recent years, the Chairman of FC Metalist Kharkiv, Oleksandr Yaroslavsky, had a modernisation programme for the sports infrastructure in Kharkiv. The investments went to six projects:

I don't get why a lot of people complain about the metalist stadium. It decent, proper football stadium. Even-tough is has a track surrounding the field, it still looks classy because its blue.

^^ Erm, a proper football stadium doesn't have an athletics track.

WorldCupWatcher

Yes, i know. but because of the fact that the stands are relatively close to the track, and it's blue color, makes it more a football stadium than, for example, the old delle alpi stadium. still not a textbook football stadium, but i hope you know what i mean

For an athletics its quite OK for football, been there at an Euroleague game. But I think in future they will build a pure football stadium.

the problem its not that its a bad stadium, but the fact that three of the best games fo euro will be played there instead of Kiev or Warsaw...

I would say two, but of group stage, not of whole euro.

Netherlands-Denmark Metalist Stadium, Kharkiv

Netherlands-Germany Metalist Stadium, Kharkiv

Portugal-Netherlands Metalist Stadium, Kharkiv

They messed up because Ukraine wanted to play 1 game in Kiev and one in Donetsk, they should've linked Donetsk to Harkow and Kiev to Lviv with Ukraine playing in Kiev 3 group stage games and let group B with Holland 3x in Donetsk and the other 3 games in Harkow, so the Pot 1 team would enjoy important games in one place and the other make shorter trips.
Also Germany needs to play in Lviv-Kharkiv-Lviv, Group D also has Kiev and Donetsk, so one gets 70k and 50k, the other 30k+30k? Greedy................

If they really wanted to offer Kharkiv and Lviv a good game, they should've handed at least one of them a Quarter Final slot, leaving Donetsk with the Semi and Kiev with the final...

I bet that the Polish organizers are very upset at the draw. All the big spender tourists were allocated to Ukraine: Germans, Dutch, English, French. In the meantime, Poland got several PIIGS countries (Spain, Italy, Ireland), Russia, and Central/South-Eastern European countries (Czech Rep., Croatia and... Greece, the cheapest people of all Europeans :P ).

It's true though that many of the big spenders will be based in Poland and cross the border only for the games, but still...

As much as I heard, only a handful or England supporters will make the trip, so it's not such a big win.
Don't know about the rest.

I think this is absolutely true.I think it was a very poor draw as far as supporters are concerned for Poland. That said,i think either Holland or Germany will be in Poland for the quaters finals .
By the way,the long range weather forecasts available(the best one) is going for some really warm weather in Poland and Ukraine for june.
Thought id mention it.

OTOH it was really good draw considering chances of polish team to prgress from group (out of 5 teams that Poland could realistically hope to win againt) 3 fell to polish group (Czechia, Russia, Greece). Ukrainians may enjoy seeing bettter teams in their country, but they also have little chance of progressing in their group (England, France, Sweden).

The average Greek still has far higher income compared i.e. to the average Romanian. You should be convinced the Greek supporters traveling to Poland (and there will be quite a few of them believe me) will be anything but "cheap".

Not sure why it wouldn't be a great game. There will be many great games in the Poland-hosted group, and in fact I think that group A could turn very entertaining because the teams are quite even in quality.

Even in quality but what quality? :sleepy:

They can be happy with the fac they have chances in Qualifying to the Quarters, but Group A si probably the worst I've seen at a Euro ever.

The ability of the players in international football tournaments has very little bearing on how good the games will be.

The idea that one group's games will be better than another because the teams in it are a bit better in quality is just flawed.

The only thing that can make those games entertaining is if the Czech Republic and Greece will qualify, so a bit of a surprise for the "group of life".
